Abstract:In this expository article, we present a brief introduction to the theory of Hilbert modular forms and Galois representations, and describe what it means to attach a compatible system of Galois representations to a Hilbert modular form.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:The present notes are the expanded and polished version of three lectures given in Stanford, concerning the analytic and arithmetic properties of weight one modular forms. The author tried to write them in a style accessible to non-analytically oriented number theoritists: in particular, some effort is made to be precise on statements involving uniformity in the parameters. On the other hand, another purpose was to provide an introduction, together with a set of references, consciously kept small, to the realm of Galois representations, for non-algebraists -- like the author. The proofs are sketched, at best, but we tried to motivate the results, and to relate them to interesting conjectures.

Abstract:We define Hilbert-Siegel modular forms and Hecke "operators" acting on them. As with Hilbert modular forms, these linear transformations are not linear operators until we consider a direct product of spaces of modular forms (with varying groups), modulo natural identifications we can make between certain spaces. With Hilbert-Siegel forms we identify several families of natural identifications between certain spaces of modular forms. We associate the Fourier coefficients of a form in our product space to even integral lattices, independent of a basis and choice of coefficient rings. We then determine the action of the Hecke operators on these Fourier coefficients, paralleling the result of Hafner and Walling for Siegel modular forms (where the number field is the field of rationals).

Abstract:Let $p$ be a prime number and $F$ a totally real number field. For each prime $\mathfrak{p}$ of $F$ above $p$ we construct a Hecke operator $T_{\mathfrak{p}}$ acting on $(\text{mod}\,p^{m})$ Katz Hilbert modular classes which agrees with the classical Hecke operator at $\mathfrak{p}$ for global sections that lift to characteristic zero. Using these operators and the techniques of patching complexes of Calegari and Geraghty we prove that the Galois representations arising from torsion Hilbert modular classes of parallel weight $\mathbf{1}$ are unramified at $p$ when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]=2$ . Some partial and some conjectural results are obtained when $[F:\mathbb{Q}]>2$ .

Abstract:We work out the exact relationship between algebraic modular forms for a two-by-two general unitary group over a definite quaternion algebra, and those arising from genera of positive-definite quinary lattices, relating stabilisers of local lattices with specific open compact subgroups, paramodular at split places, and with Atkin-Lehner operators. Combining this with the recent work of Rösner and Weissauer, proving conjectures of Ibukiyama on Jacquet-Langlands type correspondences (mildly generalised here), provides an effective tool for computing Hecke eigenvalues for Siegel modular forms of degree two and paramodular level. It also enables us to prove examples of congruences of Hecke eigenvalues connecting Siegel modular forms of degrees two and one. These include some of a type conjectured by Harder at level one, supported by computations of Fretwell at higher levels, and a subtly different congruence discovered experimentally by Buzzard and Golyshev.

Abstract:We use the theory of trianguline -modules over pseudorigid spaces to prove a modularity lifting theorem for certain Galois representations which are trianguline at p, including those with characteristic p coefficients. The use of pseudorigid spaces lets us construct integral models of the trianguline varieties of [BHS17], [Che13] after bounding the slope, and we carry out a Taylor–Wiles patching argument for families of overconvergent modular forms. This permits us to construct a patched quaternionic eigenvariety and deduce our modularity results.

Abstract:Let $F$ be an arbitrary totally real field. Under weak conditions we prove the existence of certain Eisenstein congruences between parallel weight $k \geq 3$ Hilbert eigenforms of level $\mathfrak{mp}$ and Hilbert Eisenstein series of level $\mathfrak{m}$, for arbitrary ideal $\mathfrak{m}$ and prime ideal $\mathfrak{p}\nmid \mathfrak{m}$ of $\mathcal{O}_F$. Such congruences have their moduli coming from special values of Hecke $L$-functions and their Euler factors, and our results allow for the eigenforms to have non-trivial Hecke character. After this, we consider the question of when such congruences can be satisfied by newforms, proving a general result about this.

The Explicit Hypergeometric-Modularity Method I

Abstract:The theories of hypergeometric functions and modular forms are highly intertwined. For example, particular values of truncated hypergeometric functions and hypergeometric character sums are often congruent or equal to Fourier coefficients of modular forms. In this series of papers, we develop and explore an explicit "Hypergeometric-Modularity" method for associating a modular form to a given hypergeometric datum. In particular, for certain length three and four hypergeometric data we give an explicit method for finding a modular form $f$ such that the corresponding hypergeometric Galois representation has a subrepresentation isomorphic to the Deligne representation of $f$. Our method utilizes Ramanujan's theory of elliptic functions to alternative bases, commutative formal group laws, and supercongruences. As a byproduct, we give a collection of eta quotients with multiplicative coefficients constructed from hypergeometric functions. In the second paper, we discuss a number of applications, including explicit connections between hypergeometric values and periods of these explicit eta quotients as well as evaluation formulae for certain special $L$-values.

Abstract:First, I will quickly recall some of the basic elements of the minimal model program. Then, I concentrate on the interactions between the minimal model program and some moduli problems. In particular, I explain the construction of moduli spaces of varieties of general type via the minimal model program. Abstract. The Hecke symmetry is a salient feature of Shimura varieties. In the more recent past these symmetries have led to the notion of leaves, a global structure on the reduction of modular varieties of PEL type defined by Oort, and conjecturally for all Shimura varieties with good reduction. The Hecke symmetry also led to the notion of canonical coordinates on leaves, generalizing the classical Serre-Tate coordinates. We will discuss some recent works related to the Hecke symmetry : (1) -adic and p-adic monodromy of leaves, and irreducibility of leaves (joint work with F. Oort). One of the methods for showing that the p-adic monodromy is big is inspired by H. Hida. (2) CM lifting modulo Hecke symmetry (joint work with B. Conrad and F. Oort). Abstract. In this lecture we explain how to attach a p-adic representation to a vector bundle with strongly semistable reduction of degree zero on a p-adic curve. We also discuss higher dimensional generalizations. This is a report on joint work with Annette Werner. Abstract. Since the proof of Iwasawa's main conjecture in the classical case (the- orem of Mazur and Wiles), automorphic forms on GL(2) have played an essential role to understand GL(1)-problems. After the breakthrough by A. Wiles ((1)), there has been a substantial progress in the class field theory for GL2. In this talk, open problems in classical Iwasawa theory are discussed from this perspective, based on Galois deformations.

Their aim is to explain and prove the modular symbols algorithm in as elementary and as explicit terms as possible, and to enable the devoted student to implement it over any ring (such that a sufficient linear algebra theory is available in the chosen computer algebra system). The chosen approach is based on group cohomology and along the way the needed tools from homological algebra are provided.

Abstract:We define a pro-$p$ Abelian sheaf on a modular curve of a fixed level $N \geq 5$ divisible by a prime number $p \neq 2$. Every $p$-adic representation of $\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ associated to an eigenform is obtained as a quotient of its étale cohomology. For any compact $\mathbb{Z}_p[[1 + N \mathbb{Z}_p]]$-algebra $\Lambda_1$ satisfying certain suitable conditions, we construct a representation of $\text{Gal}(\overline{\mathbb{Q}}/\mathbb{Q})$ over $\Lambda_1$ associated to a $\Lambda_1$-adic cuspidal eigenform of finite slope as a scalar extension of a quotient of the étale cohomology.

Abstract:The modularity of an elliptic curve $E/\mathbb Q$ can be expressed either as an analytic statement that the $L$-function is the Mellin transform of a modular form, or as a geometric statement that $E$ is a quotient of a modular curve $X_0(N)$. For elliptic curves over number fields these notions diverge; a conjecture of Hamahata asserts that for every elliptic curve $E$ over a totally real number field there is a correspondence between a Hilbert modular variety and the product of the conjugates of $E$. In this paper we prove the conjecture by explicit computation for many cases where $E$ is defined over a real quadratic field and the geometric genus of the Hilbert modular variety is $1$.

On modular representations of inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over a local non-archimedean field

Abstract:Let $\mathrm{F}$ be a local non-archimedean field of residue characteristic $p$ and $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ an algebraic closure of a finite field of characteristic $\ell \neq p$. We extend the results of Lapid and Mínguez concerning $\square$-irreducible representations of inner forms of $\mathrm{GL}_n(\mathrm{F})$ to representations over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$. As applications, we compute the Godement-Jacquet $L$-factor for any smooth irreducible representation over $\overline{\mathbb{F}}_\ell$ and show that the local factors of a representation agree with the ones of its $\mathrm{C}$-parameter defined by Kurinczuk and Matringe. Moreover, we reprove that the classification of irreducible representations via multisegments due to Vignéras and Mínguez-Sécherre is indeed exhaustive without using the classification of Ariki and Mathas of simple modules of Hecke algebras. Finally, we characterize the irreducible constituents of certain parabolically induced representations, as was already done by Zelevinsky over $\mathbb{C}$.
