Abstract:This tutorial introduces (and provides, via the document source) the Quantikz LaTeX package for typesetting quantum circuit diagrams. This takes advantage of tikz to give greater control over the circuit options. Those familiar with the excellent QCircuit package will recognise much of the notation, although it has evolved a bit (hopefully simplified!).

However, many might find learning all of the supplementary information that goes into quantum algorithms to be a daunting task, and become discouraged. This tutorial is a series of lessons, aimed to teach the basics of quantum algorithms to those who may have little to no background in quantum physics and/or minimal knowledge of coding in python. Each lesson covers select physics/coding topics needed for writing quantum algorithms, eventually building up a toolset for tackling more and more challenging quantum algorithms. This tutorial series is designed to provide readers from any background with two services: 1) A concise and thorough understanding of some of the most popular/academically important quantum algorithms. 2) A fluent understanding of how to write code for quantum algorithms, using IBM's publicly available Qiskit.

Abstract:We describe the development and in-class evaluation of a Quantum Interactive Learning Tutorial (QuILT) on quantum key distribution, a context which involves an exciting application of quantum mechanics. The protocol used in the QuILT described here uses single photons with non-orthogonal polarization states to generate a random shared key over a public channel for encrypting and decrypting information. The QuILT strives to help upper-level undergraduate students learn quantum mechanics using a simple two state system. It actively engages students in the learning process and helps them build links between the formalism and the conceptual aspects of quantum physics without compromising the technical content. The in-class evaluation suggests that the validated QuILT is helpful in improving students' understanding of relevant concepts.

Advancing Quantum Computing with Formal Methods

Abstract:This tutorial introduces quantum computing with a focus on the applicability of formal methods in this relatively new domain. We describe quantum circuits and convey an understanding of their inherent combinatorial nature and the exponential blow-up that makes them hard to analyze. Then, we show how weighted model counting (\#SAT) can be used to solve hard analysis tasks for quantum circuits. This tutorial is aimed at everyone in the formal methods community with an interest in quantum computing. Familiarity with quantum computing is not required, but basic linear algebra knowledge (particularly matrix multiplication and basis vectors) is a prerequisite. The goal of the tutorial is to inspire the community to advance the development of quantum computing with formal methods.

Abstract:We have developed and evaluated a Quantum Interactive Learning Tutorial (QuILT) on a Mach-Zehnder Interferometer with single photons to expose upper-level students in quantum mechanics courses to contemporary quantum optics applications. The QuILT strives to help students develop the ability to apply fundamental quantum principles to physical situations in quantum optics and explore the differences between classical and quantum ideas. The QuILT adapts visualization tools to help students build physical intuition about counter-intuitive quantum optics phenomena with single photons including a quantum eraser setup and focuses on helping them integrate qualitative and quantitative understanding. We discuss findings from in-class evaluations.

Abstract:QuTiP, the Quantum Toolbox in Python, has been at the forefront of open-source quantum software for the last ten years. It is used as a research, teaching, and industrial tool, and has been downloaded millions of times by users around the world. Here we introduce the latest developments in QuTiP v5, which are set to have a large impact on the future of QuTiP and enable it to be a modern, continuously developed and popular tool for another decade and more. We summarize the code design and fundamental data layer changes as well as efficiency improvements, new solvers, applications to quantum circuits with QuTiP-QIP, and new quantum control tools with QuTiP-QOC. Additional flexibility in the data layer underlying all "quantum objects" in QuTiP allows us to harness the power of state-of-the-art data formats and packages like JAX, CuPy, and more. We explain these new features with a series of both well-known and new examples. The code for these examples is available in a static form on GitHub and will be available also in a continuously updated and documented notebook form in the qutip-tutorials package.

QuFlow: Visualizing Parameter Flow in Quantum Circuits for Understanding Quantum Computation

Abstract:With the rapid progress of quantum computation recently, it attracts a substantial amount of people to learn quantum computation. Quantum computation differs a lot from classical computation. To help novices learn quantum computation, we conducted a interview with people who are learning quantum computation and found that novices feel confused about 1) how quantum gates contribute to the final results in a complicated quantum circuit and 2) how the final results generate steps along the quantum circuits. Thus, we present QuFlow, an interactive visualization tool for teaching the fundamentals of quantum computation. Users can use it to build a quantum circuit, then QuFlow will simulate the quantum circuit in a classical computer. After simulation, QuFlow will not only present the final output results of quantum circuits but also shows how the parameters change along the quantum circuits. A qualitative user study was carried out among target users, and the results suggested that QuFlow could be effective for learning quantum computation.

Abstract:Science is rich in abstract concepts that capture complex processes in astonishingly simple ways. A prominent example is the reduction of molecules to simple graphs. This work introduces a design principle for parametrized quantum circuits based on chemical graphs, providing a way forward in three major obstacles in quantum circuit design for molecular systems: Operator ordering, parameter initialization and initial state preparation. It allows physical interpretation of each individual component and provides an heuristic to qualitatively estimate the difficulty of preparing ground states for individual instances of molecules.

Abstract:English abstract: In the "Intuitive Quantum Physics" course, we use graphical interpretations of mathematical equations and qualitative reasoning to develop and teach a simplified model of quantum physics. Our course contains three units: Wave physics, Development of a conceptual toolbox, and quantum physics. It also contains three key themes: wave-particle duality, the Schroedinger equation, and tunneling of quantum particles. Students learn most new material in lab-tutorials in which students work in small groups (3 to 3 people) on specially designed worksheets. Lecture reinforces the lab-tutorial content and focuses more on issues about the nature of science. Data show that students are able to learn some of the most difficult concepts in the course, and also that students learn to believe that there is a conceptually accessible structure to the physics in the course. German abstract: Im Kurs "Intuitive Quantum Physics" werden graphische Interpretationen mathematischer Gleichungen und qualitatives Denken durch ein vereinfachtes Modell der Quantenphysik gelehrt. Unser Kurs besteht aus drei wichtigen Abschnitten: Wellenphysik, Aufbau eines Werkzeugkastens ("Toolbox") und Quantenphysik, sowie drei Schluesselthemen: Welle-Teilchen-Dualitaet, die Schroedinger-Gleichung und Tunneln von Quantenteilchen. Wir unterrichten vorwiegend mit Lab-Tutorials, in denen StudentInnen in kleinen Gruppen (3 bis 4 Personen) anwendungsspezifische Arbeitsblaetter durcharbeiten. In den Diskussionen werden auch Auseinandersetzungen ueber das "Bild der Physik", bei uns "Nature of Science" genannt, gefuehrt. Abstract:Quantum master equations are an invaluable tool to model the dynamics of a plethora of microscopic systems, ranging from quantum optics and quantum information processing, to energy and charge transport, electronic and nuclear spin resonance, photochemistry, and more. This tutorial offers a concise and pedagogical introduction to quantum master equations, accessible to a broad, cross-disciplinary audience. The reader is guided through the basics of quantum dynamics with hands-on examples that build up in complexity. The tutorial covers essential methods like the Lindblad master equation, Redfield relaxation, and Floquet theory, as well as techniques like Suzuki-Trotter expansion and numerical approaches for sparse solvers. These methods are illustrated with code snippets implemented in python and other languages, which can be used as a starting point for generalisation and more sophisticated implementations.

Abstract:We present an introduction to the Quantum Toolbox in Python (QuTiP) in the context of an undergraduate quantum mechanics class and potential senior research projects. QuTiP provides ready-to-use definitions of standard quantum states and operators as well as numerous dynamic solvers and tools for visualization. The quantum systems described here are typical for an undergraduate curriculum and range from two-state systems to optical interaction with multilevel atoms.

Abstract:Quantum computing is a rapidly evolving field that enables exponential speed-up over classical algorithms. At the heart of this revolutionary technology are quantum circuits, which serve as vital tools for implementing, analyzing, and optimizing quantum algorithms. Recent advancements in quantum computing and the increasing capability of quantum devices have led to the development of more complex quantum circuits. However, traditional quantum circuit diagrams suffer from scalability and readability issues, which limit the efficiency of analysis and optimization processes. In this research, we propose a novel visualization approach for large-scale quantum circuits by adopting semantic analysis to facilitate the comprehension of quantum circuits. We first exploit meta-data and semantic information extracted from the underlying code of quantum circuits to create component segmentations and pattern abstractions, allowing for easier wrangling of massive circuit diagrams. We then develop Quantivine, an interactive system for exploring and understanding quantum circuits. A series of novel circuit visualizations are designed to uncover contextual details such as qubit provenance, parallelism, and entanglement. The effectiveness of Quantivine is demonstrated through two usage scenarios of quantum circuits with up to 100 qubits and a formal user evaluation with quantum experts. Abstract:With quantum computers promising advantages even in the near-term NISQ era, there is a lively community that develops software and toolkits for the design of corresponding quantum circuits. Although the underlying problems are different, expertise from the design automation community, which developed sophisticated design solutions for the conventional realm in the past decades, can help here. In this respect, decision diagrams provide a promising foundation for tackling many design tasks such as simulation, synthesis, and verification of quantum circuits. However, users of the corresponding tools often do not have a proper background or an intuition about how these methods based on decision diagrams work and what their strengths and limits are. In this work, we first review the concepts of how decision diagrams can be employed, e.g., for the simulation and verification of quantum circuits. Afterwards, in an effort to make decision diagrams for quantum computing more accessible, we then present a visualization tool for quantum decision diagrams, which allows users to explore the behavior of decision diagrams in the design tasks mentioned above. Finally, we present decision diagram-based tools for simulation and verification of quantum circuits using the methods discussed above as part of the open-source JKQ quantum toolset---a set of tools for quantum computing developed at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz and released under the MIT license. Abstract:We describe Qiskit, a software development kit for quantum information science. We discuss the key design decisions that have shaped its development, and examine the software architecture and its core components. We demonstrate an end-to-end workflow for solving a problem in condensed matter physics on a quantum computer that serves to highlight some of Qiskit's capabilities, for example the representation and optimization of circuits at various abstraction levels, its scalability and retargetability to new gates, and the use of quantum-classical computations via dynamic circuits. Lastly, we discuss some of the ecosystem of tools and plugins that extend Qiskit for various tasks, and the future ahead.

The QuILT exposes students to contemporary topics in quantum mechanics and uses a guided approach to learning. It adapts existing visualization tools to help students build physical intuition about quantum phenomena and strives to help them develop the ability to apply quantum principles in physical situations. The quantum eraser apparatus in the gedanken (thought) experiments and simulations that students learn from in the QuILT uses a MachZehnder Interferometer with single photons. Abstract:We introduce CircuitQ, an open-source toolbox for the analysis of superconducting circuits implemented in Python. It features the automated construction of a symbolic Hamiltonian of the input circuit and a dynamic numerical representation of the Hamiltonian with a variable basis choice. Additional features include the estimation of the T1 lifetimes of the circuit states under various noise mechanisms. We review previously established circuit quantization methods and formulate them in a way that facilitates the software implementation. The toolbox is then showcased by applying it to practically relevant qubit circuits and comparing it to specialized circuit solvers. Our circuit quantization is applicable to circuit inputs from a large design space, and the software is open-sourced. We thereby add an important resource for the design of new quantum circuits for quantum information processing applications.

Abstract:Diagrammatic representations of quantum algorithms and circuits offer novel approaches to their design and analysis. In this work, we describe extensions of the ZX-calculus especially suitable for parameterized quantum circuits, in particular for computing observable expectation values as functions of or for fixed parameters, which are important algorithmic quantities in a variety of applications ranging from combinatorial optimization to quantum chemistry. We provide several new ZX-diagram rewrite rules and generalizations for this setting. In particular, we give formal rules for dealing with linear combinations of ZX-diagrams, where the relative complex-valued scale factors of each diagram must be kept track of, in contrast to most previously studied single-diagram realizations where these coefficients can be effectively ignored. This allows us to directly import a number useful relations from the operator analysis to ZX-calculus setting, including causal cone and quantum gate commutation rules. We demonstrate that the diagrammatic approach offers useful insights into algorithm structure and performance by considering several ansatze from the literature including realizations of hardware-efficient ansatze and QAOA. We find that by employing a diagrammatic representation, calculations across different ansatze can become more intuitive and potentially easier to approach systematically than by alternative means. Finally, we outline how diagrammatic approaches may aid in the design and study of new and more effective quantum circuit ansatze.

Abstract:Quantum information science and engineering (QISE) is a rapidly developing field that leverages the skills of experts from many disciplines to utilize the potential of quantum systems in a variety of applications. It requires talent from a wide variety of traditional fields, including physics, engineering, chemistry, and computer science, to name a few. To prepare students for such opportunities, it is important to give them a strong foundation in the basics of QISE, in which quantum computing plays a central role. In this study, we discuss the development, validation, and evaluation of a QuILT, or Quantum Interactive Learning Tutorial, on the basics and applications of quantum computing. These include an overview of key quantum mechanical concepts relevant for quantum computation (including ways a quantum computer is different from a classical computer), properties of single- and multi-qubit systems, and the basics of single-qubit quantum gates. The tutorial uses guided inquiry-based teaching-learning sequences. Its development and validation involved conducting cognitive task analysis from both expert and student perspectives and using common student difficulties as a guide. The inquiry-based learning sequences in the tutorial provide scaffolding support to help students develop a functional understanding. The final version of the validated tutorial was implemented in two distinct courses offered by the physics department with slightly different student populations and broader course goals. Students' understanding was evaluated after traditional lecture-based instruction on the requisite concepts, and again after engaging with the tutorial. We analyze and discuss their improvement in performance on concepts covered in the tutorial.
