Abstract: Roman Jackiw has made highly original and influential contributions to several areas of physics that have grown and blossomed, notably including the quantum physics of domain walls, magnetic monopoles, and fractional quantum numbers. Here I offer three small pieces that take off from those themes. I discuss the emergence of topological surface structure in materials, the emergence of a shape-space magnetic monopole in a simple mechanical system, and the emergence of fractional angular momentum in an even simpler quantum mechanical (molecular) system.

The Jahn-Teller Efect: A Permanent Presence in the Frontiers of Science

Abstract:In 1937 the Jahn-Teller (JT) effect addressed the instability (potential or actual) of non-linear symmetric molecules with degenerate orbital electronic states. In view of the large variety of JT activity that has taken place since then, we might broaden our perspective to look at works whose subjects fall under the more general heading of "Strong interactions between two dissimilar systems" (where one system is usually bosonic and the other fermionic). In these intervening years we find several highly important works in Physics and Chemistry that come under this heading and were either connected with, or arose from, JT systems, problems and approaches. Apart from high temperature superconductors, we mention Yang-Mills gauge-forces, symmetry breaking (in elementary particles), conical intersections in molecular potential surfaces, surface crossings between them in chemical reactions, entanglements in the quantum theory of measurements and Berry phases. We elaborate on the last two topics. We show first that the slow evolution of a Txe coupling from the weak to strong regime can model the quantum mechanical three-state measurement situation, when the positions of the nuclei acts as the measuring device. We then employ recently derived integral relations between component moduli and phases in a time dependent wave-function to demonstrate the equivalence between the state-reduction and the phase decoherence interpretations of the measurement process.

From Minimal Strings towards Jackiw-Teitelboim Gravity: On their Resurgence, Resonance, and Black Holes

Abstract:Two remarkable facts about JT two-dimensional dilaton-gravity have been recently uncovered: this theory is dual to an ensemble of quantum mechanical theories; and such ensemble is described by a random matrix model which itself may be regarded as a special (large matter-central-charge) limit of minimal string theory. This work addresses this limit, putting it in its broader matrix-model context; comparing results between multicritical models and minimal strings (i.e., changing in-between multicritical and conformal backgrounds); and in both cases making the limit of large matter-central-charge precise (as such limit can also be defined for the multicritical series). These analyses are first done via spectral geometry, at both perturbative and nonperturbative levels, addressing the resurgent large-order growth of perturbation theory, alongside a calculation of nonperturbative instanton-actions and corresponding Stokes data. This calculation requires an algorithm to reach large-order, which is valid for arbitrary two-dimensional topological gravity. String equations -- as derived from the GD construction of the resolvent -- are analyzed in both multicritical and minimal string theoretic contexts, and studied both perturbatively and nonperturbatively (always matching against the earlier spectral-geometry computations). The resulting solutions, as described by resurgent transseries, are shown to be resonant. The large matter-central-charge limit is addressed -- in the string-equation context -- and, in particular, the string equation for JT gravity is obtained to next derivative-orders, beyond the known genus-zero case (its possible exact-form is also discussed). Finally, a discussion of gravitational perturbations to Schwarzschild-like black hole solutions in these minimal-string models, regarded as deformations of JT gravity, is included - alongside a brief discussion of quasinormal modes.

Abstract:Joseph Polchinski (1954-2018), one of the the leading theoretical physicists of the past 50 years, was an exceptionally broad and deep thinker. He made fundamental contributions to quantum field theory, advancing the role of the renormalization group, and to cosmology, addressing the cosmological constant problem. Polchinski's work on D-branes revolutionized string theory and led to the discovery of a nonperturbative quantum theory of gravity. His recent, incisive reformulation of the black hole information paradox presents us with a profound challenge. Joe was deeply devoted to his family, a beloved colleague and advisor, an excellent writer, and an accomplished athlete.

Abstract:We study the expectation value of a nonplanar Wilson graph operator in SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$. In particular we analyze its asymptotic behaviour in the double-scaling limit in which both the representation labels and the Chern-Simons coupling are taken to be large, but with fixed ratio. When the Wilson graph operator has a specific form, motivated by loop quantum gravity, the critical point equations obtained in this double-scaling limit describe a very specific class of flat connection on the graph complement manifold. We find that flat connections in this class are in correspondence with the geometries of constant curvature 4-simplices. The result is fully non-perturbative from the perspective of the reconstructed geometry. We also show that the asymptotic behavior of the amplitude contains at the leading order an oscillatory part proportional to the Regge action for the single 4-simplex in the presence of a cosmological constant. In particular, the cosmological term contains the full-fledged curved volume of the 4-simplex. Interestingly, the volume term stems from the asymptotics of the Chern-Simons action. This can be understood as arising from the relation between Chern-Simons theory on the boundary of a region, and a theory defined by an $F^2$ action in the bulk. Another peculiarity of our approach is that the sign of the curvature of the reconstructed geometry, and hence of the cosmological constant in the Regge action, is not fixed a priori, but rather emerges semiclassically and dynamically from the solution of the equations of motion. In other words, this work suggests a relation between 4-dimensional loop quantum gravity with a cosmological constant and SL(2,C) Chern-Simons theory in 3-dimensions with knotted graph defects.

Abstract:Jackiw Teitelboim (JT) gravity has proven to be an excellent tool for investigating aspects of quantum gravity and black hole physics. In recent years, the study of JT gravity and its deformations has helped us learn about the different contributions of geometries in the gravitational path integral, the quantum gravity Hilbert space, the space-time factorization problem, the role of averaging in holography, the black hole information paradox, and the matrix models. All this motivates the exploration of the JT gravity in different setups, with and without matter. Here, we consider JT gravity conformally coupled to Liouville field theory and matter fields. This model admits to be interpreted as a non-critical string theory on a linear dilaton background with a tachyonic Liouville potential along a null direction. The constant curvature constraint of JT gravity results in a neutralization of the Liouville mode, which makes it possible to compute the four-point correlation function of the theory analytically. Here we give the explicit derivation of the four-point function and briefly comment on its properties, such as monodromy invariance, crossing symmetry, factorization, and limits.

Abstract:A bstract We specify bulk coordinates in Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) gravity using a boundary-intrinsic radar definition. This allows us to study and calculate exactly diff-invariant bulk correlation functions of matter-coupled JT gravity, which are found to satisfy microcausality. We observe that quantum gravity effects dominate near-horizon matter correlation functions. This shows that quantum matter in classical curved spacetime is not a sensible model for near-horizon matter-coupled JT gravity. This is how JT gravity, given our choice of bulk frame, evades an information paradox. This echoes into the quantum expectation value of the near-horizon metric, whose analysis is extended from the disk model to the recently proposed topological completion of JT gravity [1]. Due to quantum effects, at distances of order the Planck length to the horizon, a dramatic breakdown of Rindler geometry is observed.

A $C^\ast$-algebraic view on the interaction of real- and reciprocal space topology in skyrmion crystals

Abstract:Understanding the interaction of real- and reciprocal space topology in skyrmion crystals is an open problem. We approach it from the viewpoint of $C^\ast$-algebras and calculate all admissible Chern numbers of a strongly coupled tight-binding skyrmion system on a triangular lattice as a function of Fermi energy and texture parameters. Our analysis reveals the topological complexity of electronic states coupled to spin textures, and the failure of the adiabatic picture to account for it in terms of emergent electromagnetism. On the contrary, we explain the discontinuous jumps in the real-space winding number in terms of collective evolution in real-, reciprocal, and mixed space Chern numbers. Our work sets the stage for further research on topological dynamics in complex dynamic spin textures coupled to external fields.

Abstract:I outline experimental results on heavy ion collisions at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider for a non-technical audience. This includes: elliptic flow and nearly ideal hydrodynamics; the suppression of hard particles and the ratio R_AA; and electromagnetic signals, including dileptons and direct photons. Especially puzzling is why the behavior of heavy (charm) quarks appears to be so similar to that of light quarks.

Abstract:The first purpose of this short but striking paper is to revisit Elasticity (EL) and Electromagnetism (EM) by comparing the structure of these two theories and examining with details their well known couplings, in particular piezoelectricity and photoelasticity. Despite the strange Helmholtz and Mach-Lippmann analogies existing between them, no classical technique may provide a common setting. However, unexpected arguments discovered independently by the brothers E. and F. Cosserat in 1909 for EL and by H. Weyl in 1918 for EM are leading to construct a new differential sequence called Spencer sequence in the framework of the formal theory of Lie pseudogroups and to introduce it for the conformal group of space-time with 15 parameters. Then, all the previous explicit couplings can be deduced abstractly and one must just go to a laboratory in order to know about the coupling constants on which they are depending, like in the Hooke or Minkowski constitutive relations existing respectively in EL or EM separately. We finally provide a new combined experimental and theoretical proof of the fact that any 1-form with value in the second order jets (elations) of the conformal group of space-time can be uniquely decomposed into the direct sum of the Ricci tensor R and the electromagnetic field F. This result questions the mathematical foundations of both General Relativity (GR) and Gauge Theory (GT). In particular, the Einstein operator (6 terms) must be thus replaced by the formal adjoint of the Ricci operator (4 terms only) in the study of gravitational waves.

Abstract:Parity violating superconductors can support a low-dimension local interaction that becomes, upon condensation, a purely spatial Chern-Simons term. Solutions to the resulting generalized London equations can be obtained from solutions of the ordinary London equations with a complex penetration depth, and suggest several remarkable physical phenomena. The problem of flux exclusion by a sphere brings in an anapole moment, the problem of current-carrying wires brings in an azimuthal magnetic field, and the problem of vortices brings in currents along the vortices. We demonstrate that interactions of this kind, together with a conceptually related dimensionally reduced Chern-Simons interaction, can arise from physically plausible microscopic interactions.

Inverse Participation Ratios in the XX spin chain

Abstract:We continue the study of the Inverse Participation Ratios (IPRs) of the XXZ Heisenberg spin chain initiated by Misguich, Pasquier and Luck (2016) by focusing on the case of the XX Heisenberg Spin Chain. For the ground state, Misguich et al. note that calculating the IPR is equivalent to Dyson's constant term ex-conjecture. We express the IPRs of excited states as an apparently new "discrete" Hall inner product. We analyze this inner product using the theory of symmetric functions (Jack polynomials, Schur polynomials, the standard Hall inner product and $\omega_{q,t}$) to determine some exact expressions and asymptotics for IPRs. We show that IPRs can be indexed by partitions, and asymptotically the IPR of a partition is equal to that of the conjugate partition. We relate the IPRs to two other models from physics, namely, the circular symplectic ensemble of Dyson and the Dyson-Gaudin two-dimensional Coulomb lattice gas. Finally, we provide a description of the IPRs in terms of a signed count of diagonals of permutohedra.

Pseudo-Riemannian metric: a new perspective on the quantum realm

Abstract:As a fundamental concept in condensed matter physics, quantum geometry within the Riemannian metric elucidates various exotic phenomena, including the Hall effects driven by Berry curvature and quantum metric. In this work, we propose novel quantum geometries within a pseudo-Riemannian framework to explore unique characteristic of quantum matter. By defining distinct distances on pseudo-Riemannian manifolds and incorporating spin degree of freedom, we introduce the Pauli quantum geometric tensor. The imaginary part of this tensor corresponds to the Pauli Berry curvature, leading to the discovery a novel quantum phase: Pauli semimetal in PT-symmetric systems. This phase, characterized by the topological Pauli Chern number, manifests as a two-dimensional Pauli Chern insulator with helical edge states. These topological phases, uniquely revealed by the Pauli-Riemannian metric, go beyond the familiar Riemannian metric, where Berry curvature vanishes due to PT-symmetry. Pauli Chern number can classify helical topological insulator with or without time reversal symmetry. Pseudo-Riemannian metrics offer new insights into quantum materials and extend the scope of quantum geometry.
