Abstract:I will discuss results of three different types in geometry and topology. (1) General vanishing and rigidity theorems of elliptic genera proved by using modular forms, Kac-Moody algebras and vertex operator algebras. (2) The computations of intersection numbers of the moduli spaces of flat connections on a Riemann surface by using heat kernels. (3) The mirror principle about counting curves in Calabi-Yau and general projective manifolds by using hypergeometric series.

Abstract:In physics, we construct idealized mathematical models in order to explain various phenomena which we observe or create in our laboratories. In this article, I recall how sophisticated mathematical models evolved from the concept of a number created thousands of years ago, and I discuss some challenges and open questions in quantum foundations and in the Standard Model. We liberated nuclear energy, landed on the Moon and built 'quantum computers'. Encouraged by these successes, many believe that when we reconcile general relativity with quantum theory we will have the correct theory of everything. Perhaps we should be much humbler. Our perceptions of reality are biased by our senses and by our brain, bending them to meet our priors and expectations. Our abstract mathematical models describe only in an approximate way different layers of physical reality. To describe the motion of a meteorite, we can use a concept of a material point, but the point-like approximation breaks completely when the meteorite hits the Earth. Similarly, thermodynamic, chemical, molecular, atomic, nuclear and elementary particle layers of physical reality are described using specific abstract mathematical models and approximations. In my opinion, the theory of everything does not exist.

Symmetries as Isomorphisms

Abstract:Symmetries and isomorphisms play similar conceptual roles when we consider how models represent physical situations, but they are formally distinct, as two models related by symmetries are not typically isomorphic. I offer a rigorous categorical strategy that formulate symmetries as isomorphisms between models and apply it to classical electromagnetism, and evaluate its philosophical significance in relation to the recent debate between `sophistication' and `reduction'. In addition to traditional spacetime models, I also consider algebraic models, in which case we can use the method of natural operators to address the problem of ontological nonperspicuity faced by the categorical strategy. Finally, I briefly expound on the significance of symmetries as isomorphisms in the framework of Univalent Foundations, in which isomorphic structures are formally identified.

Abstract:In this paper we link the physics of topological nonlinear sigma models with that of Chern-Simons insulators. We show that corresponding to every 2n-dimensional Chern-Simons insulator there is a (n-1)-dimensional topological nonlinear sigma model with the Wess-Zumino-Witten term. Breaking internal symmetry in these nonlinear sigma models leads to nonlinear sigma models with the theta term. [This is analogous to the dimension reduction leading from 2n-dimensional Chern-Simons insulators to (2n-1) and (2n-2)-dimensional topological insulators protected by discrete symmetries.] The correspondence described in this paper allows one to derive the topological term in a theory involving fermions and order parameters (we shall referred to them as "fermion-sigma models") when the conventional gradient-expansion method fails. Abstract:The relationship between mathematics and physics has long been an area of interest and speculation. Subscribing to the recent definition by Tegmark, we present a mathematical structure involving the only division rings - the real, $\mathbb{R}$, the complex, $\mathbb{C}$, and the quaternion, $\mathbb{H}$ - known to meet the requirements of a mathematical description of our universe. The known forces and particle structure, in terms of families and color, can be associated with natural relationships within that structure. A "toy" scientific theory - based on the proposed mathematical structure - is presented to illustrate its applicability. It is shown how parity and time reversal invariance are broken. Two relevant predictions come from the formalism. First, there are no gravity waves and second, matter comes in three varieties, one of which is "dark" in the sense that it is oblivious to electromagnetic interactions.

Abstract:Parity violating superconductors can support a low-dimension local interaction that becomes, upon condensation, a purely spatial Chern-Simons term. Solutions to the resulting generalized London equations can be obtained from solutions of the ordinary London equations with a complex penetration depth, and suggest several remarkable physical phenomena. The problem of flux exclusion by a sphere brings in an anapole moment, the problem of current-carrying wires brings in an azimuthal magnetic field, and the problem of vortices brings in currents along the vortices. We demonstrate that interactions of this kind, together with a conceptually related dimensionally reduced Chern-Simons interaction, can arise from physically plausible microscopic interactions.

Abstract:We show that matrix models in Chern-Simons theory admit an interpretation as 1D exactly solvable models, paralleling the relationship between the Gaussian matrix model and the Calogero model. We compute the corresponding Hamiltonians, ground-state wavefunctions and ground-state energies and point out that the models can be interpreted as quasi-1D Coulomb plasmas. We also study the relationship between Chern-Simons theory on $S^3$ and a system of N one-dimensional fermions at finite temperature with harmonic confinement. In particular we show that the Chern-Simons partition function can be described by the density matrix of the free fermions in a very particular, crystalline, configuration. For this, we both use the Brownian motion and the matrix model description of Chern-Simons theory and find several common features with c=1 theory at finite temperature. Finally, using the exactly solvable model result, we show that the finite temperature effect can be described with a specific two-body interaction term in the Hamiltonian, with 1D Coulombic behavior at large separations.

Abstract:The canonical quantization to a Ginzburg–Landau-like theory is shown by considering the potentials of the electromagnetic field and the Chern–Simons field independently. The operator of matter fields which carries fractional spin and obeys the fractional statistics is constructed. The transportation of flux between those of the corresponding gauge field and Chern–Simons field is found. This leads to a striking conclusion that the electromagnetic field induced a topological term, which gives photon mass and leads to a Meissner effect different than happens in ordinary Ginzburg–Landau theory. The induction of a Chern–Simons term for the electromagnetic field is considered the origin of fractional statistics in general, through the transportation of flux is equivalent to the transportation of the long-distance interaction in the text. That the Chern–Simons field is hidden in the constructed matter field gives rise to a theoretical interpretation of the off-diagonal long-range order in the theory.

Abstract:Eugene Wigner famously argued for the "unreasonable effectiveness of mathematics" for describing physics and other natural sciences in his 1960 essay. That essay has now led to some 55 years of (sometimes anguished) soul searching --- responses range from "So what? Why do you think we developed mathematics in the first place?", through to extremely speculative ruminations on the existence of the universe (multiverse) as a purely mathematical entity --- the Mathematical Universe Hypothesis. In the current essay I will steer an utterly prosaic middle course: Much of the mathematics we develop is informed by physics questions we are tying to solve; and those physics questions for which the most utilitarian mathematics has successfully been developed are typically those where the best physics progress has been made.

$p$-Chords, Wee-Chords, and de Sitter Space

Abstract:One of us (L.S.) and H. Verlinde independently conjectured a holographic duality between the double-scaled SYK model at infinite temperature and dimensionally reduced $(2+1)$-dimensional de Sitter space [1]-[8]. Beyond the statement that such a duality exists there was deep disagreement between the two proposals [9]. In this note, we trace the origin of the disagreement to a superficial similarity between two q-deformed algebraic structures: the algebra of "chords" in DSSYK, and the algebra of line operators in the Chern-Simons formulation of 3D de Sitter gravity. Assuming that these two structures are the same requires an identification of parameters [7][10] which leads to a collapse of the separation of scales [9] -- the separation being required by the semiclassical limit [3][9]. Dropping that assumption restores the separation of scales but leaves unexplained the relation between chords and Chern-Simons line operators. In this note we point out the existence of a third q-deformed algebra that appears in DSSYK: the algebra of ``wee-chords." Identifying the Chern-Simons line operators with wee-chords removes the discrepancy and leads to a satisfying relation between the two sides of the duality.

Abstract:The problem of how mathematics and physics are related at a foundational level is of much interest. One approach is to work towards a coherent theory of physics and mathematics together. Here steps are taken in this direction by first examining the theory experiment connection. The role of an implied theory hierarchy and use of computers in comparing theory and experiment is described. The main idea of the paper is to tighten the theory experiment connection by bringing physical theories, as mathematical structures over C, the complex numbers, closer to what is actually done in experimental measurements and computations. The method replaces C by C_{n} which is the set of pairs, R_{n},I_{n}, of n figure rational numbers in some basis. The properties of these numbers are based on the type of numbers that represent measurement outcomes for continuous variables. A model of space and time based on R_{n} is discussed. The model is scale invariant with regions of constant step size interrupted by exponential jumps. A method of taking the limit n to infinity to obtain locally flat continuum based space and time is outlined. Possibly the most interesting result is that R_{n} based space is invariant under scale transformations which correspond to expansion and contraction of space relative to a flat background. Also the location of the origin, which is a space and time singularity, does not change under these transformations. Some properties of quantum mechanics based on C_{n} and on R_{n} space are briefly investigated.

Advances in Computational Mathematics

Abstract:We look at computational physics from an electrical engineering perspective and suggest that several concepts of mathematics, not so well-established in computational physics literature, present themselves as opportunities in the field. We discuss elliptic complexes and highlight the category theoretical background and its role as a unifying language between algebraic topology, differential geometry, and modelling software design. In particular, the ubiquitous concept of naturality is central. Natural differential operators have functorial analogues on the cochains of triangulated manifolds. In order to establish this correspondence, we derive formulas involving simplices and barycentric coordinates, defining discrete vector fields and a discrete Lie derivative as a result of a discrete analogue of Cartan's magic formula. This theorem is the main mathematical result of the paper.

Abstract:This paper presents a new perspective on integrability in theories of gravity. We show how the stationary, axisymmetric sector of General Relativity can be described by the boundary dynamics of a four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory. This approach shows promise for simplifying solution generating methods in both General Relativity and higher-dimensional supergravity theories. The four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory presented generalises those for flat space integrable models by introducing a space-time dependent branch cut in the spectral plane. We also make contact with twistor space approaches to integrability, showing how the branch cut defects of four-dimensional Chern-Simons theory arise from a discrete reduction of six-dimensional Chern-Simons theory.

Abstract:Our assumption that spacetime is a continuum leads to many challenges in mathematical physics. Singularities, divergent integrals and the like threaten many of our favorite theories, from Newtonian gravity to classical electrodynamics, quantum electrodynamics and the Standard Model. In general relativity, singularities are intimately connected to some of the theory's most dramatic successful predictions. We survey these problems and the large amount of work that has gone into dealing with them.

Abstract:In the present paper we study the relation between the Chern-Simons term and Berry's phase in the Hamiltonian formulation of the Wilson fermion. We show that, as a response of the Dirac sea to slowly changing external electromagnetic fields, the topological phase on the Wilson fermion vacuum functional gives rise to a Chern-Simons term. The results are coincident with those obtained in the Lagrangian formalism of the Wilson fermion.

Abstract:The Dyson-Schwinger (DS) equations for a quantum field theory in $D$-dimensional space-time are an infinite sequence of coupled integro-differential equations that are satisfied exactly by the Green's functions of the field theory. This sequence of equations is underdetermined because if the infinite sequence of DS equations is truncated to a finite sequence, there are always more Green's functions than equations. An approach to this problem is to close the finite system by setting the highest Green's function(s) to zero. One can examine the accuracy of this procedure in $D=0$ because in this special case the DS equations are just a sequence of coupled polynomial equations whose roots are the Green's functions. For the closed system one can calculate the roots and compare them with the exact values of the Green's functions. This procedure raises a general mathematical question: When do the roots of a sequence of polynomial approximants to a function converge to the exact roots of that function? Some roots of the polynomial approximants may (i) converge to the exact roots of the function, or (ii) approach the exact roots at first and then veer away, or (iii) converge to limiting values that are unequal to the exact roots. In this study five field-theory models in $D=0$ are examined, Hermitian $\phi^4$ and $\phi^6$ theories and non-Hermitian $i\phi^3$, $-\phi^4$, and $-i \phi^5$ theories. In all cases the sequences of roots converge to limits that differ by a few percent from the exact answers. Sophisticated asymptotic techniques are devised that increase the accuracy to one part in $10^7$. Part of this work appears in abbreviated form in Phys.~Rev.~Lett.~{\bf 130}, 101602 (2023).
