Abstract:The relationship between mathematics and physics has long been an area of interest and speculation. Subscribing to the recent definition by Tegmark, we present a mathematical structure involving the only division rings - the real, $\mathbb{R}$, the complex, $\mathbb{C}$, and the quaternion, $\mathbb{H}$ - known to meet the requirements of a mathematical description of our universe. The known forces and particle structure, in terms of families and color, can be associated with natural relationships within that structure. A "toy" scientific theory - based on the proposed mathematical structure - is presented to illustrate its applicability. It is shown how parity and time reversal invariance are broken. Two relevant predictions come from the formalism. First, there are no gravity waves and second, matter comes in three varieties, one of which is "dark" in the sense that it is oblivious to electromagnetic interactions.
What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The core problem that this paper attempts to solve is to explore the relationship between mathematics and physics, and propose a possible mathematical structure to describe our universe. Specifically, based on the Mathematical Universe Hypothesis (MUH) proposed by Tegmark, the author Lester C. Welch explored how to use the three unique division rings, namely real numbers (\(\mathbb{R}\)), complex numbers (\(\mathbb{C}\)) and quaternions (\(\mathbb{H}\)), to construct a mathematical structure that can describe known physical phenomena (such as force and particle structure).
### The main contributions of the paper include:
1. **Definition of mathematical structure**: A mathematical structure is defined in the paper, which consists of three sub - structures corresponding to real numbers, complex numbers and quaternions respectively. Each sub - structure describes a sub - universe, and these sub - universes interact through specific relationships to form the universe we observe.
2. **Explanation of physical phenomena**: The author attempts to explain some basic physical phenomena, such as gravity, electromagnetic force, strong interaction and the existence of particle families, through this mathematical structure.
3. **Symmetry breaking**: The paper shows how to naturally explain the breaking of parity and time - reversal symmetries in this mathematical structure.
4. **Predictions**: Based on this mathematical structure, the author makes two predictions: first, there are no gravitational waves; second, matter exists in three forms, one of which is "dark", that is, insensitive to electromagnetic interactions.
### Specific content:
- **Background**: The paper reviews the historical research on the relationship between mathematics and physics and cites the views of many famous scientists, such as Galilei, Hawking, Wheeler and Wigner, who all wondered why mathematics is so successful in describing the universe.
- **Construction of mathematical structure**: The author details how to construct a mathematical structure using real numbers, complex numbers and quaternions, and discusses how these mathematical structures correspond to physical phenomena.
- **"Toy" theory**: To illustrate the application of this mathematical structure, the author proposes a simplified "toy" theory, showing how to explain the mass spectrum of particles and the properties of fundamental forces through this structure.
### Conclusion:
By constructing a mathematical structure containing real numbers, complex numbers and quaternions, the paper provides a new perspective to understand physical phenomena. Although this "toy" theory is incomplete, some of its features are consistent with physical reality, indicating that this method may have the potential for further development.
