Abstract:Recently proposed Lorentz-PCT noninvariant modifications of electromagnetism are reviewed. Their experimental consequences are described, and it is argued that available data decisively rules out their occurrence in Nature.

Abstract:The electrodynamics with a Chern–Simons term pμAνF˜μν violates Lorentz and CPT symmetries with a non-vanishing pμ. For a fixed vector pμ, in this Letter we point out that the energy–momentum tensor of this theory coupled to the gravity minimally is symmetric but not divergence free, which consequently makes the gravitational field equation inconsistent. To preserve the consistency, we introduce a Chern–Simons term in the gravity sector with the coefficient determined by the Lorentz and CPT violating term in the electromagnetic field. Further we study the phenomenologies of the model on the cosmic microwave background radiation and the relic gravitational waves.

Abstract:This article contains a digest of the theory of electromagnetism and a review of the transformation between inertial frames, especially under low speed limits. The covariant nature of the Maxwell's equations is explained using the conventional language. We show that even under low speed limits, the relativistic effects should not be neglected to get a self-consistent theory of the electromagnetic fields, unless the intrinsic dynamics of these fields has been omitted completely. The quasi-static limits, where the relativistic effects can be partly neglected are also reviewed, to clarify some common misunderstandings and imprecise use of the theory in presence of moving media and other related situations. The discussions presented in this paper provide a clear view of why classical electromagnetic theory is relativistic in its essence.

Abstract:Out of conviction or expediency, some current research programs take for granted that "PCT violation implies violation of Lorentz invariance". We point out that this claim is still on somewhat shaky ground. In fact, for many years there has been no strengthening of the evidence in this direction. However, using causal perturbation theory, we prove here that when starting with a local PCT-invariant interaction, PCT symmetry can be maintained in the process of renormalization.

The asymptotic behavior of Lorentz-violating photon fields

Abstract:In this work, we discuss the Lorentz-violating modifications of the propagation properties of the massless photon in the null formalism. Starting with the Maxwell Lagrangian in the minimal standard model extension, we derive the Maxwell equations in the null formalism based on the fact that at leading order of optical approximation, the light cone structure for the CPT-violating (CPTV) $(k_{AF})^\mu$ term is unaltered. Assuming the order expansion as $\phi_0=\sum_{n=1}\phi^{n-1}_0/r^{n+2}$ and reserving only linear order corrections of the $(k_{AF})^\mu$ term, we find that the asymptotic behaviors of the three complex scalars deviate from $\phi_a^0\sim\mathcal{O}(r^{a-3})$, the behaviors of the LI counterparts, provided one of the spherically symmetric $k^2\neq0$. Our results also gives unnatural constraints: $k^2+4k^1=0$ and $\mathrm{Re}[\phi_1^0]=0$. We attribute this unnaturalness to the flaw of our perturbative treatment, in comparison with the formal dipole radiation solutions in Ref. [13]. In other words, it is highly plausible that the non-perturbative nature of the CPTV modified polarization structure may forbid a consistent perturbative treatment of Maxwell equations in the Newman-Penrose form. By the way, the exact formal results reveal that CPTV not only modifies the phase factor (dispersion relations) as a kinematic effect, it also modifies the amplitude and asymptotic behaviors of the radiation and Coulomb modes as dynamical effects. This dramatic changes of the peeling theorem may provide novel signals of the deviation from exact Lorentz symmetry.

Abstract:The quantum kinetic equation for the gauge-invariant Wigner function, constructed from spinor fields that obey the Dirac equation modified by CPT and Lorentz symmetry-violating terms, is presented. The equations for the components of the Wigner function in the Clifford algebra basis are accomplished. Focusing on the massless case, an extended semiclassical chiral kinetic theory in the presence of external electromagnetic fields is developed. We calculate the chiral currents and establish the anomalous magnetic and separation effects in a Lorentz-violating background. The chiral anomaly within the context of extended quantum electrodynamics is elucidated. Abstract:Lorentz and CPT violating QED with massless fermions at finite temperature is studied. We show that there is no ambiguity in the induced coefficient of the Chern-Simons-like term that defines the so-called Carroll-Field-Jackiw model at high temperature. We also show that this system constitutes an example where the breaking of CPT and Lorentz symmetries is more severe at high temperature than in the zero temperature case thus precluding any naive expectations of Lorentz symmetry restoration.

Abstract:In this work, we formulate the theory of Lorentz-violating scalar Quantum Chromodynamics with an arbitrary non-Abelian gauge group. This theory belongs to the class of models encompassed by the standard model extension framework. At the lowest order in the theory's Lorentz violation parameters, we calculate the divergent quantum corrections, including the renormalization group $\beta$-functions of the theory. The Lorentz-violating sector is shown to be scale invariant if there is a particular relation between the couplings.

Abstract:We present a model for a system involving a photon gauge field and a scalar field at quantum criticality in the frame of a Lifthitz-type non-relativistic Maxwell theory. We will show this model gives rise to Lorentz and CPT violation which leads to a frequency-dependent rotation of polarization plane of radiations, and so leaves potential signals on the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization anisotropies.

Abstract:In recent years, the breakdown of spacetime symmetries has been identified as a promising research field in the context of Planck-scale phenomenology. For example, various theoretical approaches to the quantum-gravity problem are known to accommodate minute violations of CPT invariance. This talk covers various topics within this research area. In particular, some mechanisms for spacetime-symmetry breaking as well as the Standard-Model Extension (SME) test framework will be reviewed; the connection between CPT and Lorentz invariance in quantum field theory will be exposed; and various experimental CPT tests with emphasis on matter--antimatter comparisons will be discussed.

Abstract:I review first some theoretical motivations for violation of Lorentz and/or CPT Invariance. Although the latter symmetries may be violated in a quantum gravity setting, nevertheless there are situations in which these violations are due to a given classical background geometry that may characterised early epochs of our Universe, and in fact be responsible for the observed dominance of matter over antimatter in the Universe. In this way I estimate some of the coefficients of the Standard Model Extension (SME), which is a framework for a field theoretic study of such a breakdown of fundamental symmetries. Then I describe briefly some tests of these symmetries, giving emphasis in low-energy antiproton physics and electric dipole moment measurements, of interest to this conference. I also mention the rôle of entangled states of neutral mesons in providing independent measurements of T(ime reversal) and CP Violation, thus providing independent tests of CPT symmetry, as well as novel (“smoking-gun” type) tests of decoherence-induced CPT violation, which may characterise some models of quantum gravity.

Abstract:The CPT theorem originally proven by Lüders and Pauli ensures the equality of masses, lifetimes, magnetic moments and cross sections of any particle and its antiparticle. We show that in a Lorentz invariant quantum field theory described by its Lagrangian, CPT-violating interaction alone does not split the masses of an elementary particle and its antiparticle but breaks only the equality of lifetimes, magnetic moments and cross sections. However, CPT violation in the mass term of a field in the Lagrangian, which can be attributed to be due to the size of the particle described by a form factor, breaks only the equality of masses. Also it is shown that the two separate effects of CPT violation in the interaction terms or in the mass term do not mix due to higher quantum corrections and remain distinguishable. Thus, we urge the experimentalists to search for such observable effects concerning differences in the masses, magnetic moments, lifetimes and cross sections between the elementary or bound state particles and their antiparticles. In the case of CPT violation only in the mass term, besides the difference in the masses of elementary bound state particles and their antiparticles, there will be also an extremely tiny difference in the lifetimes of bound states due to the difference in their phase spaces. From the details of calculations, it appears that the separate effects of the CPT violation described above are quite general, neither depending on how the nonlocality is achieved, nor depending on what this violation is due to: due to T violation, as considered in the present work, which can be attributed to a cosmological direction of time; to CP or to both T and CP violations. The latter two cases satisfy the Sakharov's conditions for explaining the baryon asymmetry in the Universe.

Abstract:It was recently suggested that possible small volations of Lorentz invariance could explain the existence of UHECR beyond the GZK cutoff and the observations of multi-TeV gamma-rays from Mkn 501. Our analysis of Lorentz-violating kinematics shows that in addition to the modified threshold conditions solving cosmic ray puzzles we should expect a strong suppression of electromagnetic processes like bremsstrahlung and pair creation. This leads to drastic effects in electron-photon cascade development in the atmosphere and in detectors.

Abstract:This paper investigates certain aspects of the CPT-odd photon sector of the minimal Standard Model Extension (SME) in the presence of a perfectly conducting plate (perfect mirror). The considered sector is described by Carroll–Field–Jackiw (CFJ) electrodynamics, where Lorentz violation is due to the presence of a single background vector denoted as , which we treat perturbatively up to second order. Specifically, we derive the modified propagator for the electromagnetic field due to the presence of the perfect mirror, and we study the corresponding interaction between the mirror and a stationary point-like charge. Our results reveal that when the charge is positioned near the mirror, a spontaneous torque emerges, which is a unique effect of Lorentz symmetry breaking. Additionally, we demonstrate that the image method for this theory is applicable when the background vector has only the component perpendicular to the mirror.

Abstract:In this paper, we present a revision of the discrete symmetries (C, P, T, CP, and CPT), within an approach that treats 2-component Weyl spinors as the fundamental building blocks. Then, we discuss some salient aspects of the discrete symmetries within quantum field theory (QFT). Besides the generic discussion, we also consider aspects arising within specific renormalizable theories (such as QED and YM). As a new application of the chiral formulation, we discuss the discrete symmetries for the Rarita-Schwinger (RS) spin-$\frac{3}{2}$ field. For the sake of completeness, the elements of linearized gravity (LG) and RS theories are discussed, as they are fundamental to Supergravity (SUGRA). We also discuss the advantages of using the 2-component spinors as the basic building blocks for the formulation of CPT-violating QFTs. Following this formalism, we establish an extension of the general RS theory with terms that violate the Lorentz symmetry and/or CPT symmetry, as well as the one already established in LG.

Abstract:Quantum photon effects in vacuum provide an interesting setting to test quantum electrodynamics, serving as a source for predictions about physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we investigate these effects by calculating the one-loop Euler-Heisenberg-like effective action within a Lorentz-violating scalar quantum electrodynamics framework. In both CPT-even and CPT-odd scenarios, we obtain the exact result in all orders of the stress tensor $F_{\mu\nu}$ and evaluate explicitly the lower orders of this effective action. We identify the quantum effects coming from Lorentz violation in an explicitly gauge invariant way. Nonlinear Lorentz-violating contributions that may affect photon-photon scattering are explicitly evaluated.

Abstract:In this work, we study a model in nonlinear electrodynamics in the presence of a CPT-even term that violates Lorentz symmetry. The Lorentz-breaking vector, in addition to the usual background magnetic field, produces interesting effects in the dispersion relations. The consequences on the vacuum refractive index and the group velocity are studied. Vacuum birefringence is discussed in the case the nonlinear electrodynamics is a Euler-Heisenberg model.

Abstract:Theory of Supersymmetric Quantum Electrodynamics is extended by interactions with external vector and tensor backgrounds, that are assumed to be generated by some Lorentz-violating (LV) dynamics at an ultraviolet scale perhaps related to the Planck scale. Exact supersymmetry requires that such interactions correspond to LV operators of dimension five or higher, providing a solution to the naturalness problem in the LV sector. We classify all dimension five and six LV operators, analyze their properties at the quantum level and describe observational consequences of LV in this theory. We show that LV operators do not induce destabilizing D-terms, gauge anomaly and the Chern-Simons term for photons. We calculate the renormalization group evolution of dimension five LV operators and their mixing with dimension three LV operators, controlled by the scale of the soft-breaking masses. Dimension five LV operators are constrained by the low-energy precision measurements at 10^{-10}-10^{-5} level in units of the inverse Planck scale, while the Planck-scale suppressed dimension six LV operators are allowed by observational data.
