Abstract:A theoretical framework extending QED in the context of the standard model is used to analyze a variety of Lorentz and CPT tests in atomic systems. Experimental signatures of possible Lorentz and CPT violation in these systems are investigated, and bounds are discussed.

Abstract:In recent years, the breakdown of spacetime symmetries has been identified as a promising research field in the context of Planck-scale phenomenology. For example, various theoretical approaches to the quantum-gravity problem are known to accommodate minute violations of CPT invariance. This talk covers various topics within this research area. In particular, some mechanisms for spacetime-symmetry breaking as well as the Standard-Model Extension (SME) test framework will be reviewed; the connection between CPT and Lorentz invariance in quantum field theory will be exposed; and various experimental CPT tests with emphasis on matter--antimatter comparisons will be discussed.

Abstract:Lorentz and CPT violation in hadronic physics must be tied to symmetry violations at the underlying quark and gluon level. Chiral perturbation theory provides a method for translating novel operators that may appear in the Lagrange density for color-charged parton fields into equivalent forms for effective theories at the meson and baryon levels. We extend the application of this technique to the study of Lorentz-violating and potentially CPT-violating operators from the minimal standard model extension. For dimension-4 operators, there are nontrivial relations between the coefficients of baryon-level operators related to underlying quark and gluon operators with the same Lorentz structures. Moreover, in the mapping of the dimension-3 operators from the quark and gluon level to the hadron level (considered here for the first time), many of the hadronic observables contain no new low-energy coupling constants at all, which makes it possible to make direct translations of bounds derived using experiments on one kind of hadron into bounds in a completely different corner of the hadronic sector. A notable consequence of this is bounds (at $10^{-15}$-$10^{-20}$ GeV levels) on differences $a^{\mu}_{B}-a^{\mu}_{B'}$ of Lorentz and CPT violation coefficients for $SU(3)_{f}$ octet baryons that differ in their structure by the replacement of a single valance $d$ quark by a $s$ quark. Never before has there been any proposal for how these kinds of differences could be constrained.

Hyperfine Interactions

Abstract:I review first some theoretical motivations for violation of Lorentz and/or CPT Invariance. Although the latter symmetries may be violated in a quantum gravity setting, nevertheless there are situations in which these violations are due to a given classical background geometry that may characterised early epochs of our Universe, and in fact be responsible for the observed dominance of matter over antimatter in the Universe. In this way I estimate some of the coefficients of the Standard Model Extension (SME), which is a framework for a field theoretic study of such a breakdown of fundamental symmetries. Then I describe briefly some tests of these symmetries, giving emphasis in low-energy antiproton physics and electric dipole moment measurements, of interest to this conference. I also mention the rôle of entangled states of neutral mesons in providing independent measurements of T(ime reversal) and CP Violation, thus providing independent tests of CPT symmetry, as well as novel (“smoking-gun” type) tests of decoherence-induced CPT violation, which may characterise some models of quantum gravity.

Abstract:It was recently suggested that possible small volations of Lorentz invariance could explain the existence of UHECR beyond the GZK cutoff and the observations of multi-TeV gamma-rays from Mkn 501. Our analysis of Lorentz-violating kinematics shows that in addition to the modified threshold conditions solving cosmic ray puzzles we should expect a strong suppression of electromagnetic processes like bremsstrahlung and pair creation. This leads to drastic effects in electron-photon cascade development in the atmosphere and in detectors.

Abstract:This work presents a model for testing Lorentz and CPT symmetry through sidereal-variation studies of the hyperfine-Zeeman deuterium ground-state transition frequencies. It represents an advancement over previous models by using a well-established deuteron wave-function parametrization to calculate contributions from nucleon Lorentz-violating operators toward the Lorentz-violating frequency shift. Furthermore, this work extends the analysis beyond the zeroth-boost order previously considered. This study centers on deuterium's potential for testing Lorentz-violating nonminimal terms. Specifically, it compares the prospects of an ongoing deuterium experiment with the current best limits on nonminimal coefficients. The conclusion drawn is that the deuterium experiment holds the potential to enhance and establish first-time limits on nonminimal proton, neutron, and electron SME coefficients, marking it as a valuable experiment in the current worldwide systematic search for Lorentz and CPT violation.

Abstract:Quantum photon effects in vacuum provide an interesting setting to test quantum electrodynamics, serving as a source for predictions about physics beyond the Standard Model. In this paper, we investigate these effects by calculating the one-loop Euler-Heisenberg-like effective action within a Lorentz-violating scalar quantum electrodynamics framework. In both CPT-even and CPT-odd scenarios, we obtain the exact result in all orders of the stress tensor $F_{\mu\nu}$ and evaluate explicitly the lower orders of this effective action. We identify the quantum effects coming from Lorentz violation in an explicitly gauge invariant way. Nonlinear Lorentz-violating contributions that may affect photon-photon scattering are explicitly evaluated.

Abstract:We present a model for a system involving a photon gauge field and a scalar field at quantum criticality in the frame of a Lifthitz-type non-relativistic Maxwell theory. We will show this model gives rise to Lorentz and CPT violation which leads to a frequency-dependent rotation of polarization plane of radiations, and so leaves potential signals on the cosmic microwave background temperature and polarization anisotropies.

Abstract:In this paper, we investigate the production process of a photon pair in a regime of Quantum Electrodynamics (QED), considering the presence of a constant four-vector that defines a privileged direction in spacetime, resulting in Lorentz symmetry violation and CPT violation. We explore Lorentz violation in the context of vectorial nonminimal coupling, where we analyze the modifications introduced by this coupling in the scattering amplitude at the vertex. Moreover, we delve into Lorentz violation with axial-like nonminimal coupling. Both analyses are conducted by examining the constant four-vector of both time-like and space-like types.

Abstract:In this work, we formulate the theory of Lorentz-violating scalar Quantum Chromodynamics with an arbitrary non-Abelian gauge group. This theory belongs to the class of models encompassed by the standard model extension framework. At the lowest order in the theory's Lorentz violation parameters, we calculate the divergent quantum corrections, including the renormalization group $\beta$-functions of the theory. The Lorentz-violating sector is shown to be scale invariant if there is a particular relation between the couplings.

Abstract:Lorentz Invariance (LI) is the founding postulate of Einstein's 1905 theory of relativity, and therefore at the heart of all accepted theories of physics. It characterizes the invariance of the laws of physics in inertial frames under changes of velocity or orientation. This central role, and indications from unification theories hinting toward a possible LI violation, have motivated tremendous experimental efforts to test LI. A comprehensive theoretical framework to describe violations of LI has been developed over the last decade: the Lorentz violating Standard Model Extension (SME). It allows a characterization of LI violations in all fields of present day physics using a large (but finite) set of parameters which are all zero when LI is satisfied. All classical tests (e.g. Michelson-Morley or Kennedy-Thorndike experiments) can be analyzed in the SME, but it also allows the conception of new types of experiments, not thought of previously. We have carried out such a conceptually new LI test, by comparing particular atomic transitions (particular orientations of the involved nuclear spins) in the $^{133}$Cs atom using a cold atomic fountain clock. This allows us to test LI in a previously largely unexplored region of the SME parameter space, corresponding to first measurements of four proton parameters and an improvement by 11 and 12 orders of magnitude on the determination of four others. In spite of the attained accuracies, and of having extended the search into a new region of the SME, we still find no indication of LI violation.

Lorentz- and CPT-violating effects in Penning traps at linear boost

Abstract:We present in this work an analysis of Lorentz- and CPT-violating signals at linear boost order in Penning-trap experiments. The theory of quantum electrodynamics with Penning traps is revisited and the dominant shifts in the cyclotron and anomaly frequencies of confined particles and antiparticles are reproduced. To study time variations of the experimental signals at linear boost order, we provide a general discussion on transformations of coefficients for Lorentz violation between different frames, and derive the expressions of the cyclotron and anomaly frequency shifts in the Sun-centered frame. Relating these frequency shifts to the charge-to-mass ratios, the $g$ factors, and their comparisons between particles and antiparticles, we extract numerous new or improved bounds on coefficients for Lorentz violation from existing Penning-trap measurements.

Abstract:We study the Lorentz and CPT violating effects on the branching ratio BR, the CPT violating asymmetry A_{CPT} and the ratio of the decay width, including only the Lorentz violating effects, to the one obtained in the standard model, for the flavor dependent part of the lepton flavor conserving Z\to l^+ l^- (l=e,\mu,\tau) decay. The inclusion of the Lorentz and CPT violating effects to the standard model contribution is too small to be detected, since the corresponding coefficients are highly suppressed at the low energy scale.

Abstract:The CPT theorem originally proven by Lüders and Pauli ensures the equality of masses, lifetimes, magnetic moments and cross sections of any particle and its antiparticle. We show that in a Lorentz invariant quantum field theory described by its Lagrangian, CPT-violating interaction alone does not split the masses of an elementary particle and its antiparticle but breaks only the equality of lifetimes, magnetic moments and cross sections. However, CPT violation in the mass term of a field in the Lagrangian, which can be attributed to be due to the size of the particle described by a form factor, breaks only the equality of masses. Also it is shown that the two separate effects of CPT violation in the interaction terms or in the mass term do not mix due to higher quantum corrections and remain distinguishable. Thus, we urge the experimentalists to search for such observable effects concerning differences in the masses, magnetic moments, lifetimes and cross sections between the elementary or bound state particles and their antiparticles. In the case of CPT violation only in the mass term, besides the difference in the masses of elementary bound state particles and their antiparticles, there will be also an extremely tiny difference in the lifetimes of bound states due to the difference in their phase spaces. From the details of calculations, it appears that the separate effects of the CPT violation described above are quite general, neither depending on how the nonlocality is achieved, nor depending on what this violation is due to: due to T violation, as considered in the present work, which can be attributed to a cosmological direction of time; to CP or to both T and CP violations. The latter two cases satisfy the Sakharov's conditions for explaining the baryon asymmetry in the Universe.

Abstract:I present a brief review on the motivation for the study on Lorentz violation and on some of our studies with phenomenological analysis of Lorentz violation effects. I also discuss three effective field theory frameworks for Lorentz violation: the Coleman-Glashow model, the standard model extension (SME), and the standard model supplement (SMS). The situation of the OPERA "anomaly" is also briefly reviewed, together with some discussion on the superluminality of neutrinos within the effective field theory frameworks.
