Abstract:Admissible point transformations of classes of rth order linear ordinary differential equations (in particular, the whole class of such equations and its subclasses of equations in the rational form, the Laguerre-Forsyth form, the first and second Arnold forms) are exhaustively described. Using these results, the group classification of such equations is carried out within the algebraic approach in three different ways.

Abstract:In this paper we consider a generalized Kuramoto-Sivashinsky equation. The equivalence group of the class under consideration has been constructed. This group allows us to perform a comprehensive study and a clear and concise formulation of the results. We have constructed the optimal system of subalgebras of the projections of the equivalence algebra on the space formed by the dependent variable and the arbitrary functions. By using this optimal system, all nonequivalent equations admitting an extension by one of the principal Lie algebra of the class under consideration can be determined. Taking into account the additional symmetries obtained we reduce some partial differential equations belonging to the class into ordinary differential equations. We derive some exact solutions of these equations.

Abstract:The goal of the present paper is to propose an enhanced ordinary differential equation solver by exploitation of the powerful equivalence method of Élie Cartan. This solver returns a target equation equivalent to the equation to be solved and the transformation realizing the equivalence. The target ODE is a member of a dictionary of ODEs, that are regarded as well-known, or at least well-studied. The dictionary considered in this article comprises the ODEs in a book of Kamke. The major advantage of our solver is that the equivalence transformation is obtained without integrating differential equations. We provide also a theoretical contribution revealing the relationship between the change of coordinates that maps two differential equations and their symmetry pseudo-groups.

Abstract:A method is given for obtaining equivalence subgroups of a family of differential equations from the equivalence group of simpler equations of a similar form, but in which the arbitrary functions specifying the family element depend on fewer variables. Examples of applications to classical equations are presented, some of which show how the method can actually be used for a much easier determination of the equivalence group itself.

Actuellement elles sont le support de nombreux algorithmes d'analyse numerique et omnipresentes en combinatoire. Mais peut-on parler de theorie des equations aux differences ? La reponse est certainement non. Les equations aux differences non lineaires restent un sujet difficile et d'actualite pour les mathematiciens (au meme titre que les equations differentielles ordinaires, voir a ce sujet les articles « Equations differentielles lineaires » [AF 103J et « Equations differentielles » [AF 652]). Cependant, une partie de la theorie est bien comprise: c'est la partie relative aux equations aux differences lineaires. Dans cet expose nous nous limitons a en exposer les points fondamentaux.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to tackle integrability problem for evolutionary differential-difference equations (D$\Delta$Es) on free associative algebras, also referred to as nonabelian D$\Delta$Es. This approach enables us to derive necessary integrability conditions, determine the integrability of a given equation, and make progress in the classification of integrable nonabelian D$\Delta$Es. This work involves establishing symbolic representations for the nonabelian difference algebra, difference operators, and formal series, as well as introducing a novel quasi-local extension for the algebra of formal series within the context of symbolic representations. Applying this formalism, we solve the classification problem of integrable skew-symmetric quasi-linear nonabelian equations of orders $(-1,1)$, $(-2,2)$, and $(-3,3)$, consequently revealing some new equations in the process.

Abstract:Using the only admissible rank-two realisations of the Lie algebra of the affine group in one dimension in terms of the Lie algebra of Lie symmetries of the Ermakov-Pinney (EP) equation, some classes of second order nonlinear ordinary differential equations solvable by reduction method are constructed. One class includes the standard EP equation as a special case. A new EP equation with a perturbed potential but admitting the same solution formula as EP itself arises. The solution of the dissipative EP equation is also discussed.

Abstract:We study second order linear homogeneous differential equations a(x)y'' + b(x)y' + c(x)y = 0 with analytic coefficients in a neighborhood of a regular singularity in the sense of Frobenius. These equations are model for a number of natural phenomena in sciences and applications in engineering. We address questions which can be divided in the following groups: (i) Regularity of solutions. (ii) Analytic classification of the differential equation. (iii) Formal and differentiable rigidity. (iv) Synthesis and uniqueness of ODEs with a prescribed solution. Our approach is inspired by elements from analytic theory of singularities and complex foliations, adapted to this framework. Our results also reinforce the connection between classical methods in second order analytic ODEs and (geometric) theory of singularities. Our results, though of a clear theoretical content, are important in justifying many procedures in the solution of such equations.

Abstract:Bagderina \cite{Bagderina2013} solved the equivalence problem for a family of scalar second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs), with cubic nonlinearity in the first-order derivative, via point transformations. However, the question is open for the general class $y''=f(x,y,y')$ which is not cubic in the first-order derivative. We utilize Lie's infinitesimal method to study the differential invariants of this general class under an arbitrary point equivalence transformations. All fifth order differential invariants and the invariant differentiation operators are determined. As an application, invariant description of all the canonical forms in the complex plane for second-order ODEs $y''=f(x,y,y')$ where both of the two Tress\'e relative invariants are non-zero is provided.

Abstract:Active diffeomorphisms map a differentiable manifold to itself. They transform manifold points and objects without changing the system of local coordinates used to represent those objects. What has been called Leibniz Equivalence is the assertion that, although active diffeomorphisms do change manifold objects, they do not change what is called the "physical situation" being modeled by those objects. This paper introduces the contrasting idea of Newton Equivalence, which asserts that the different values of manifold objects produced by active diffeomorphisms do model different physical situations. But due to the assumption of general covariance, these different physical situations are all equally possible. They represent physically different situations all of which could happen. This paper compares these two interpretations of active diffeomorphisms, and comments on their importance in the substantivalism debate.

Abstract:We consider a problem of equivalence of generic pairs $(X,V)$ on a manifold $M$, where $V$ is a distribution of rank $m$ and $X$ is a distribution of rank one. We construct a canonical bundle with a canonical frame. We prove that two pairs are equivalent if and only if the corresponding frames are diffeomorphic. As a particular case, with $V$ integrable, we provide a new solution to the problem of contact equivalence of systems of $m$ ordinary differential equations: $x^{(k+1)}=F(t,x,x',...,x^{(k)})$, where $k>2$ or $k=2$ and $m>1$.

Abstract:We apply a novel method for the equivalence group and its infinitesimal generators to the investigation of invariants of linear ordinary differential equations. First, a comparative study of this method is illustrated by an example. Next, the method is used to obtain the invariants of low order linear ordinary differential equations, and the structure invariance group for an arbitrary order of these equations. Other properties of these equations are also discussed, including the exact number of their invariants.
