Abstract:In this paper we provide new examples of geometrically trivial strongly minimal differential algebraic varieties living on nonisotrivial curves over differentially closed fields of characteristic zero. Our technique involves developing a theory of Kodaira-Spencer forms and building connections to deformation theory. In our development, we answer several open questions posed by Rosen and some natural questions about Manin kernels.

Abstract:It is often noted that many of the basic concepts of differential geometry, such as the definition of connection, are purely algebraic in nature. Here, we review and extend existing work on fully algebraic formulations of differential geometry which eliminate the need for an underlying manifold. While the literature contains various independent approaches to this, we focus on one particular approach that we argue to be the most natural one based on the definition of \emph{algebraifold}, by which we mean a commutative algebra $\mathcal{A}$ for which the module of derivations of $\mathcal{A}$ is finitely generated projective. Over $\mathbb{R}$ as the base ring, this class of algebras includes the algebra $C^\infty(M)$ of smooth functions on a manifold $M$, and similarly for analytic functions. An importantly different example is the Colombeau algebra of generalized functions on $M$, which makes distributional differential geometry an instance of our formalism. Another instance is a fibred version of smooth differential geometry, since any smooth submersion $M \to N$ makes $C^\infty(M)$ into an algebraifold with $C^\infty(N)$ as the base ring.Over any field $k$ of characteristic zero, examples include the algebra of regular functions on a smooth affine variety as well as any function field.

Algebraic solutions of linear differential equations: an arithmetic approach

Abstract:Given a linear differential equation with coefficients in $\mathbb{Q}(x)$, an important question is to know whether its full space of solutions consists of algebraic functions, or at least if one of its specific solutions is algebraic. After presenting motivating examples coming from various branches of mathematics, we advertise in an elementary way a beautiful local-global arithmetic approach to these questions, initiated by Grothendieck in the late sixties. This approach has deep ramifications and leads to the still unsolved Grothendieck-Katz $p$-curvature conjecture.

Abstract:The theory of differential equations has an arithmetic analogue in which derivatives are replaced by Fermat quotients. One can then ask what is the arithmetic analogue of a linear differential equation. The study of usual linear differential equations is the same as the study of the differential cocycle from $GL_n$ into its Lie algebra given by the logarithmic derivative. However we prove here that there are no such cocycles in the context of arithmetic differential equations. In sequels of this paper we will remedy the situation by introducing arithmetic analogues of Lie algebras and a skew version of differential cocycles; this will lead to a theory of linear arithmetic differential equations.

Abstract:A classification of ordinary differential equations and finite-difference equations in one variable having polynomial solutions (the generalized Bochner problem) is given. The method used is based on the spectral problem for a polynomial element of the universal enveloping algebra of $sl_2({\bf R})$ (for differential equations) or $sl_2({\bf R})_q$ (for finite-difference equations) in the "projectivized" representation possessing an invariant subspace. Connection to the recently-discovered quasi-exactly-solvable problems is discussed.

Abstract:We study second order linear homogeneous differential equations a(x)y'' + b(x)y' + c(x)y = 0 with analytic coefficients in a neighborhood of a regular singularity in the sense of Frobenius. These equations are model for a number of natural phenomena in sciences and applications in engineering. We address questions which can be divided in the following groups: (i) Regularity of solutions. (ii) Analytic classification of the differential equation. (iii) Formal and differentiable rigidity. (iv) Synthesis and uniqueness of ODEs with a prescribed solution. Our approach is inspired by elements from analytic theory of singularities and complex foliations, adapted to this framework. Our results also reinforce the connection between classical methods in second order analytic ODEs and (geometric) theory of singularities. Our results, though of a clear theoretical content, are important in justifying many procedures in the solution of such equations.

Abstract:A special class of autonomous algebraic differential equations is studied. No equations in the class have any entire transcendental solutions. In a sense, for almost all equations in the class, transcendental meromorphic solutions can also be excluded. With substantially fewer exceptional equations, transcendental solutions are either elliptic or of the form f(z) = g(exp(cz)) with g rational and c constant.

Abstract:The strata of the moduli spaces of Abelian differentials are non-homogenous spaces carrying natural bi-algebraic structures. Partly inspired by the case of homogenous spaces carrying bi-algebraic structures (such as torii, Abelian varieties and Shimura varieties), Klingler and Lerer recently showed that any bi-algebraic curve in a stratum of the moduli space of Abelian differentials is linear provided that the so-called condition $(\star)$ is fulfilled. In this note, we construct a non-linear bi-algebraic curve, resp. surface, of Abelian differentials of genus $7$, resp. $10$.

Abstract:A classical result of Klein states that, given a finite primitive group G ⊆ S L 2 ( C ) , there exists a hypergeometric equation such that every second order LODE whose differential Galois group is isomorphic to G is projectively equivalent to the pullback by a rational map of this hypergeometric equation. In this paper, we generalize this result. We show that, given a finite primitive group G ⊆ S L n ( C ) , there exist a positive integer d = d ( G ) and a standard equation such that every LODE whose differential Galois group is isomorphic to G is gauge equivalent, over a field extension F of degree d, to an equation projectively equivalent to the pullback by a map in F of this standard equation. For n = 3 , these standard equations can be chosen to be hypergeometric.

Abstract:We propose a novel approach to tackle integrability problem for evolutionary differential-difference equations (D$\Delta$Es) on free associative algebras, also referred to as nonabelian D$\Delta$Es. This approach enables us to derive necessary integrability conditions, determine the integrability of a given equation, and make progress in the classification of integrable nonabelian D$\Delta$Es. This work involves establishing symbolic representations for the nonabelian difference algebra, difference operators, and formal series, as well as introducing a novel quasi-local extension for the algebra of formal series within the context of symbolic representations. Applying this formalism, we solve the classification problem of integrable skew-symmetric quasi-linear nonabelian equations of orders $(-1,1)$, $(-2,2)$, and $(-3,3)$, consequently revealing some new equations in the process.

Abstract:A differential calculus on an associative algebra A is an algebraic analogue of the calculus of differential forms on a smooth manifold. It supplies A with a structure on which dynamics and field theory can be formulated to some extent in very much the same way we are used to from the geometrical arena underlying classical physical theories and models. In previous work, certain differential calculi on a commutative algebra exhibited relations with lattice structures, stochastics, and parametrized quantum theories. This motivated the present systematic investigation of differential calculi on commutative and associative algebras. Various results about their structure are obtained. In particular, it is shown that there is a correspondence between first order differential calculi on such an algebra and commutative and associative products in the space of 1-forms. An example of such a product is provided by the Ito calculus of stochastic differentials. For the case where the algebra A is freely generated by `coordinates' x^i, i=1,...,n, we study calculi for which the differentials dx^i constitute a basis of the space of 1-forms (as a left A-module). These may be regarded as `deformations' of the ordinary differential calculus on R^n. For n < 4 a classification of all (orbits under the general linear group of) such calculi with `constant structure functions' is presented. We analyse whether these calculi are reducible (i.e., a skew tensor product of lower-dimensional calculi) or whether they are the extension (as defined in this article) of a one dimension lower calculus. Furthermore, generalizations to arbitrary n are obtained for all these calculi.

Abstract:In this note we highlight a common origin for many ubiquitous geometric structures, as well as several new ones by using only the functors of differential calculus in A.M Vinogradov's original sense, adapted to special classes of (graded) commutative algebras. Special attention is given to the particularly simple cases of diole and triole algebras and we show the latter environment is the appropriate one to describe calculus in vector bundles in the presence of a vector-valued fiber metric.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce a precise definition of algebraic traveling wave solution for general n-th order partial differential equations. All examples of explicit traveling waves known by the authors fall in this category. Our main result proves that algebraic traveling waves exist if and only if an associated n- dimensional first order ordinary differential system has some invariant algebraic curve. As a paradigmatic application we prove that, for the celebrated Fisher- Kolmogorov equation, the only algebraic traveling waves solutions are the ones found in 1979 by Ablowitz and Zeppetella. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time that this type of results have been obtained.
