Abstract:Two coupled small parameter ordinary differential equations were considered. The solutions of differential equations will change rapidly near both sides of the boundary layer. Firstly, the properties were studied for differential equations. Secondly, the asymptotic properties of differential equations were discussed. Thirdly, the numerical methods with zero approximation were constructed for both left side and right side singular component differential equations. Finally, error analyses were given.

Abstract:We study second order linear homogeneous differential equations a(x)y'' + b(x)y' + c(x)y = 0 with analytic coefficients in a neighborhood of a regular singularity in the sense of Frobenius. These equations are model for a number of natural phenomena in sciences and applications in engineering. We address questions which can be divided in the following groups: (i) Regularity of solutions. (ii) Analytic classification of the differential equation. (iii) Formal and differentiable rigidity. (iv) Synthesis and uniqueness of ODEs with a prescribed solution. Our approach is inspired by elements from analytic theory of singularities and complex foliations, adapted to this framework. Our results also reinforce the connection between classical methods in second order analytic ODEs and (geometric) theory of singularities. Our results, though of a clear theoretical content, are important in justifying many procedures in the solution of such equations.

Abstract:In this article, we will explore the applications of linear ordinary differential equations (linear ODEs) in Physics and other branches of mathematics, and dig into the matrix method for solving linear ODEs. Although linear ODEs have a comparatively easy form, they are effective in solving certain physical and geometrical problems. We will begin by introducing fundamental knowledge in Linear Algebra and proving the existence and uniqueness of solution for ODEs. Then, we will concentrate on finding the solutions for ODEs and introducing the matrix method for solving linear ODEs. Eventually, we will apply the conclusions we’ve gathered from the previous parts into solving problems concerning Physics and differential curves. The matrix method is of great importance in doing higher dimensional computations, as it allows multiple variables to be calculated at the same time, thus reducing the complexity.

Abstract:Given a linear constant coefficient ODE depending on a parameter, when this parameter approaches zero, the solution set converges to the solution set of the limit differential equation if the leading coefficient does not vanish. The situation is very subtle in the singular case, i.e., in the case when this coefficient becomes zero. The solution set then may even collapse completely. In this note, a formalism is developed in which the solution set of a linear constant coefficient ODE always depends continuously on the equation coefficients.

History and Overview

Abstract:Differential Equations are among the most important Mathematical tools used in creating models in the science, engineering, economics, mathematics, physics, aeronautics, astronomy, dynamics, biology, chemistry, medicine, environmental sciences, social sciences, banking and many other areas [7]. A differential equation that has only one independent variable is called an Ordinary Differential Equation (ODE), and all derivatives in it are taken with respect to that variable. Most often, the variable is time, t; although, I will use x in this paper as the independent variable. The differential equation where the unknown function depends on two or more variables is referred to as Partial Differential Equations (PDE). Ordinary differential equations can be solved by a variety of methods, analytical and numerical. Although there are many analytic methods for finding the solution of differential equations, there exist quite a number of differential equations that cannot be solved analytically [8]. This means that the solution cannot be expressed as the sum of a finite number of elementary functions (polynomials, exponentials, trigonometric, and hyperbolic functions). For simple differential equations, it is possible to find closed form solutions [9]. But many differential equations arising in applications are so complicated that it is sometimes impractical to have solution formulas; or at least if a solution formula is available, it may involve integrals that can be calculated only by using a numerical quadrature formula. In either case, numerical methods provide a powerful alternative tool for solving the differential equations under the prescribed initial condition or conditions [9]. In this paper, I present the basic and commonly used numerical and analytical methods of solving ordinary differential equations.

Abstract:New classes of evolution differential equations with the Liouville derivative in Banach spaces are studied. Equations are considered on the whole real line and are not endowed by the initial conditions. Using the methods of the Fourier transform theory, we prove the unique solvability in the sense of classical solutions for the equation solved with respect to the Liouville fractional derivative with a bounded operator at the unknown function. This allows us to obtain the analogous result for the equation with a linear degenerate operator at the fractional derivative and with a spectrally bounded pair of operators. results are applied to obtain new results on the unique solvability of systems of ordinary differential equations, boundary problems to partial differential equations, and systems of equations.

Analysis of PDEs

Abstract:We apply a novel method for the equivalence group and its infinitesimal generators to the investigation of invariants of linear ordinary differential equations. First, a comparative study of this method is illustrated by an example. Next, the method is used to obtain the invariants of low order linear ordinary differential equations, and the structure invariance group for an arbitrary order of these equations. Other properties of these equations are also discussed, including the exact number of their invariants.

Abstract:The Leibniz integrating factor yields a reliable and direct way to solve linear first order ordinary differential equations. However, attempts to extend the technique to second or higher order differential equations resulted in integrating factors that are function of both the dependent and the independent variable and, thus, are the result of partial differential equations. Due to the importance of second and higher order ordinary differential equations in Applied Mathematics, Physics and Engineering, a simpler integrating factor, i.e., function of the independent variable only, gives important results to many problems that, today, rely on a multitude of different and more specific solution methods. Hence, this manuscript introduces the concept of generalized integrating factor for linear ordinary differential equations of order n . The procedure is used to address linear second order equations with varying and with constant coefficients. The solutions are analytically derived by means of nested convolutions and a close relation between linear and nonlinear differential equations is established. One interesting aspect of the proposed formulation is the fact that both the analytical homogeneous and the analytical particular solutions are obtained in separate. Analytical solutions for Bessel, Cauchy–Euler and the constant coefficients cases are provided and compared to examples in the literature and using numerical methods. Special attention is given to the constant coefficients case, since its application in mechanical and electrical engineering is widespread. Thus, a set of continuous excitation—periodic and polynomial—and discontinuous excitation functions—Dirac's delta and Heaviside step function—are studied and their analytical solution are given. The analytical results were compared to each established method, like undetermined coefficients, variation of parameters and Laplace transform, showing the exactness and convenience of this generalization of the Leibniz integrating factor.

Abstract:Three new Runge–Kutta methods are presented for numerical integration of systems of linear inhomogeneous ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with constant coefficients. Such ODEs arise in the numerical solution of partial differential equations governing linear wave phenomena. The restriction to linear ODEs with constant coefficients reduces the number of conditions which the coefficients of the Runge–Kutta method must satisfy. This freedom is used to develop methods which are more efficient than conventional Runge–Kutta methods. A fourth-order method is presented which uses only two memory locations per dependent variable, while the classical fourth-order Runge–Kutta method uses three. This method is an excellent choice for simulations of linear wave phenomena if memory is a primary concern. In addition, fifth- and sixth-order methods are presented which require five and six stages, respectively, one fewer than their conventional counterparts, and are therefore more efficient. These methods are an excellent option for use with high-order spatial discretizations.

Abstract:Linearization problem of ordinary differential equations by a new set of tangent transformations is considered in the paper. This set of transformations allows one to extend the set of transformations applied for the linearization problem. Criteria for fourth-order ordinary differential equations to be linearizable are obtained in a particular case; a linearization test and procedure for obtaining the linearizing transformations are provided in explicit forms.

Abstract:Transformations of differential equations to other equivalent equations play a central role in many routines for solving intricate equations. A class of differential equations that are particularly amenable to solution techniques based on such transformations is the class of linearisable second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs). There are various characterisations of such ODEs. We exploit a particular characterisation and the expanded Lie group method to construct a generic solution for all linearisable second-order ODEs. The general solution of any given equation from this class is then easily obtainable from the generic solution through a point transformation constructed using only two suitably chosen symmetries of the equation. We illustrate the approach with three examples.

Abstract:Linear time-invariant (LTI) systems appear frequently in natural sciences and engineering contexts. Many LTI systems are described by ordinary differential equations (ODEs). For example, biological gene regulation, analog filter circuits, and simple mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems can all be described with varying approximations as LTI systems using ODEs. While linearity and time-invariance are straightforward to demonstrate for closed-form system definitions, determining whether an ODE describes a system with LTI properties is less obvious and rarely discussed in depth in the literature. Complications arise due to slightly different definitions of linearity in different contexts. This commentary is intended to provide clarity on this subtle point, and act as an instructional aid or educational supplement.

Abstract:In this paper we introduce and investigate a new kind of functional (including ordinary and evolutionary partial) differential equations. The main goal of this paper is to explore our new philosophy by some examples on functional ODEs and PDEs. For some typical examples, we prove the global existence of smooth solutions, analyze some interesting properties enjoyed by these solutions, and illustrate the differences between this new class of equations and the traditional ones. This kind of functional differential equations is a new and powerful tool to study some problems arising from both mathematics and physics, more applications in particular to differential geometry and fundamental physics can be expected.

Abstract:Bagderina \cite{Bagderina2013} solved the equivalence problem for a family of scalar second-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs), with cubic nonlinearity in the first-order derivative, via point transformations. However, the question is open for the general class $y''=f(x,y,y')$ which is not cubic in the first-order derivative. We utilize Lie's infinitesimal method to study the differential invariants of this general class under an arbitrary point equivalence transformations. All fifth order differential invariants and the invariant differentiation operators are determined. As an application, invariant description of all the canonical forms in the complex plane for second-order ODEs $y''=f(x,y,y')$ where both of the two Tress\'e relative invariants are non-zero is provided.
