Abstract:Piezo-induced surface vibrations in solids with nanometer amplitude are detected and analyzed. The vibrations are excited by the piezo element using a PZT component, which attached to the target material and controlled by a signal generator. The detections of such vibrations are carried out using the atomic force probe (APP). The APP is a very sensitive instrument utilizing a nano-tip connected to a cantilever to detect vibrations through an interaction of atomic force between the tip and the target surface with sub-nanometer resolution, about 30 times more precise than the piezoelectric sensor for the same signal detection. The glass material has been chosen as the target solid. The enhancement effect of the vibrations in the glass slice around resonance frequency is confirmed, the maximum amplitude appears at 7.4 kHz. The piezo-induced vibration will be employed in our future research for developing piezo-induced and laser-induced surface acoustic wave (SAW) motor.

Abstract:Surface effects, including surface elasticity, surface piezoelectricity and residual surface stress, on the postbuckling of piezoelectric nanobeams due to an electric field are investigated using an energy method in this paper. The critical buckling voltage and amplitude are obtained analytically in terms of the bulk and surface material properties and geometric parameters. The results show that surface effects play a significant role in the postbuckling of piezoelectric nanobeams. It is found that the influences of surface piezoelectricity and residual surface stress are more prominent than the surface elasticity. These results might be helpful for designing piezoelectric nanobeam-based devices.

Abstract:In engineering applications, piezoelectric materials are usually bonded to elastic substrates to form so-called smart materials and structures. Such materials and structures can respond to external electromechanical environments, which are often transient. This article studies a periodic array of surface cracks in a piezoelectric layer bonded to an elastic substrate subjected to transient electromechanical loads. The anti-plane mechanical and in-plane electrical loads are investigated. A system of singular integral equations is formulated in terms of the crack surface anti-plane displacement and in-plane electrical potential. Effects of crack spacing and electromechanical coupling on the time-dependent crack tip field intensity factors are investigated in detail. Both a single piezoelectric layer and a piezoelectric layer bonded to an elastic substrate are analyzed for electrically impermeable and permeable crack assumptions.

Abstract:We report on recent progress in understanding the cracking behavior of piezoceramics, brittle materials whose nonlinear response is dominated by electrical effects. We simulate these microstructural effects using discrete electric dipoles, and find that the crack driving force at the local length scale is expressed solely in terms of mechanical opening stresses. The resulting predictions of failure under combined electromechanical loading conditions agree qualitatively with empirical observations. An investigation of permeable surface conditions reveals that the effect of air inside an open crack is negligible except in the case of an almost perfectly sharp crack.

Abstract:A piezoelectric material layer bonded to an elastic substrate is investigated. The piezoelectric layer contains an edge crack that is perpendicular to the surface of medium. The poling axis of the piezoelectric layer is parallel to its edge. The elastic layer can be an ideal insulator or an ideal conductor. The Fourier transform technique is used to reduce the problem to a solution of singular integral equations. Both impermeable crack and permeable crack assumptions are considered. Stress and electric displacement intensity factors are investigated for different dimensions of the medium. A double-edge cracked symmetric piezoelectric laminate under symmetric electro-mechanical load is also investigated.

Abstract:Piezoelectricity is the ability of some materials to get electrically polarized under mechanical stress and mechanically deformed under electric field.Despite increasingly high demand and expanding realm of application, the choice of practically explored piezoelectrics is limited to quartz (a-SiO 2 ) crystals, PbZr 1-x Ti x O 3 (PZT) ferroelectric ceramics and PbMg 2/3 Nb 1/3 O 3 -PbTiO 3 (PMN-PT) relaxor-ferroelectric crystals.Piezoelectricity is well studied phenomena, however, some aspects like the role of ferroelectric / ferroelastic domains) remains poorly understood.Therefore, the design of new functional piezoelectrics -e.g.lead-free alternatives to PZT remains complicated.Here we develop X-ray diffraction-based technique and data-analysis algorithm for separation of "domain-related" and "intrinsic" response of ferroelectric / ferroelastic domains in PZT single crystals to external electric field.We measured three-dimensional high-resolution reciprocal space maps around selected families of split Bragg peak, representing diffraction from differently oriented ferroelastic twin domains.The crystal was loaded into specially designed sample environment cell [1], while external electric field was synchronized with PILATUS2M detector using microcontroller-based data-acquisition system [2].We developed the algorithm for assignment of different components of each family to individual domain variants with known direction of spontaneous polarization relative to applied electric field.Using this algorithm, we are able to track the change of lattice constants and domain volume fraction of each domains.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials are usually bonded to elastic substrates to form so-called smart material structures that are capable of sensing and actuating in a controlled manner in response to a stimulus. Such smart structures are often operated at transient electromechanical environments. In this paper, the problem of a periodic array of surface cracks in a piezoelectric layer bonded to an elastic substrate subjected to transient electromechanical loads is studied. A system of singular integral equations is formulated in terms of the crack surface displacement and electric potential. Numerical results include the time-dependent stress and electric displacement intensity factors. Effects of crack spacing and electromechanical coupling on the crack tip field intensity factors are investigated in details. Numerical examples are given for a single piezoelectric layer and a piezoelectric layer bonded to an elastic substrate, subjected to independent mechanical and electrical impact loads. Some useful conclusions are given.

Abstract:We study the contribution of surface piezoelectricity to the anti-plane deformations of a hexagonal piezoelectric material weakened by a crack. The surface piezoelectricity is incorporated by using an extended version of the continuum-based surface/interface model of Gurtin and Murdoch. The original boundary value problem is finally reduced to a system of two coupled first-order Cauchy singular integro-differential equations by considering a distribution of line dislocations and electric-potential-dislocations on the crack. Through a diagonalization strategy, the coupled system can be transformed into two independent singular integro-differential equations, each of which contains only one single unknown function and can be numerically solved by the collocation method. Our solution demonstrates that the stresses, strains, electric displacements and electric displacements exhibit the logarithmic singularity at the crack tips. The obtained solution is further used to predict the size-dependent effective electroelastic properties of a piezoelectric solid containing multiple nanocracks with surface piezoelectricity within the framework of non-interaction approximation.

Non-Linear Properties Of Piezoelectric Ceramics

Abstract:Sensors and actuators based on piezoelectric ceramics are finding an increasingly large variety of applications under a very wide range of environmental conditions and applied signals. Some actuator applications require the piezoelectric materials to support large mechanical loads and produce high strain output. In order to accomplish this requirement of higher strains, large electric fields must be applied. This results in a significant non-linear behaviour and hence affects the performance of the material. It is therefore important to understand the behaviour and properties of these materials over a large range of temperature, frequency and applied electric fields and mechanical stresses. We have measured some of the dielectric, elastic and piezoelectric constants of soft (EC-65, EC-76) and hard (EC-64, EC-69) lead zirconate titanate (PZT) piezoelectric ceramics, manufactured by EDO Ceramics, as a function of temperature, frequency, applied field and applied stress. We have also determined the dependence of the piezoelectric constants on an applied DC bias voltage or stress. The time dependence of the piezoelectric response in the piezoelectric ceramics has also been studied. A summary of the results will be presented. Most of these results can be understood on the basis of the extrinsic contributions to the piezoelectric response that arises from the existence of domains in the material.

Abstract:Piezoelectric materials are an integral part of the modern world, as they find wide-ranging applications in various advanced domains such as telecommunications, automotive, electronics, and aerospace. Recently, these materials gained interest also for applications in liquid environments across diverse fields, including biomedical engineering, purification systems, electrocatalysis, fluid characterizations and micro/nano electromechanical systems (MEMS/NEMS). Despite their growing importance, many questions remain unanswered regarding their characterization and the evaluation of their performance in liquid media. It is critical to understand how these materials interact with surrounding ionic species under mechanical stress application. To address these questions, a novel experimental setup has been designed to characterize piezoelectric materials through electrokinetic measurements in a liquid environment. A polarized piezoelectric sample (lead zirconate titanate) is subjected to a mechanical stress, which is known to influence the piezoelectric surface charge state. This change in surface charge state can be monitored through measurement of the streaming potential. The results indicate that there is a strong correlation between the applied mechanical stress and the electrokinetic response of the piezoelectric sample. When the sample is subjected to a dynamic stress variation, its electrokinetic response closely follows the profile of the applied stress. In addition, the stress applied to the piezoelectric sample directly impacts the flow cell's resistance. A non-piezoelectric material (alumina) is also subjected to similar stress conditions. Both electrokinetics and resistance of the flow cell remain almost unchanged for the non-piezoelectric alumina sample during the stress application. Finite element modeling is employed to model variation of surface charge on the piezoelectric sample due to stress application. The piezoelectric model is then coupled with electrokinetic and resistance models to explore the effect of stress on the electrical responses of the system. The modeling results exhibit high degree of consistency with the experimental observations.

Abstract:A cracked piezoelectric material strip under combining mechanical and electrical loads is considered. The crack is vertical to the top and bottom edges of the strip. The edges of the strip are parallel to the x-axis and perpendicular to the z-axis. When a piezoelectric ceramic is poled, it exhibits transversely isotropic behavior. Among many possible poled axis orientations, a particular orientation when the poling direction lies parallel to x-axis is examined in this paper. Both impermeable crack and permeable crack assumptions are considered. Numerical results are included for three kinds of fracture mechanics specimens, namely an edge-cracked strip, a double edge-cracked strip, and a center-cracked strip, subjected to uniform tensions and uniform electric displacement loads simultaneously, at the far ends. In addition, an edge-cracked strip under pure bending and uniform electric displacement loads at the far ends is also investigated in this paper.

Abstract:The fast developments in nanotechnology enable the wide applications of piezoelectric nano-structures in nano-electromechanical systems, forming new research directions such as nanopiezotronics. Compared with the tradi-tional macroscopic piezoelectric materials, nano-scaled piezoelectric materials present different mechanical properties, possibly due to the existence of surface effect, one of the main reasons for explaining the difference. This paper concerns the propagation of surface waves in a generally anisotropic piezoelectric half-space with surface effect. Stroh formalism, Barnett-Lothe integral matrices, and surface impedance matrices are adopted to theoretically derive the dispersion equa-tions of surface waves. For transversely isotropic piezoelectric materials with the isotropic basal plane parallel with the sagittal plane, Rayleigh waves and B-G waves are found to be decoupled from each other, and their dispersion equations are derived in an explicit and compact form. It is rigorously shown that the velocity of Rayleigh waves should be smaller than that of the bulk waves polarized in the depth direction, whilst the velocity of B-G waves should be smaller than that of the bulk waves polarized in the direction perpendicular to the sagittal plane. In the numerical simulations, PZT-5H is taken as an example to numerically illustrate the influences of surface residual stress and electrical boundary conditions on the dispersion properties of surface waves. It is found that surface residual stress has a significant effect only on the first-order Rayleigh wave, and the B-G wave under the electric open-circuit condition propagates faster than under the electric closed-circuit condition. The theoretical predictions and numerical results presented in the paper should be helpful in understanding size-dependent dynamic behaviors of piezoelectric structures with surface effect and may provide a solid basis for the design of nano-sized surface acoustic wave devices as well as for the nondestructive testing of nano-sized piezoelectric structures.
Effect of Local Polarization Switching on Piezoelectric Fracture

Abstract:The reliable operation of smart devices and structures depends on the integrity of the materials chosen for sensor and actuator components. Among the most commonly used transducer materials, piezoelectric ceramics possess desirable response characteristics, but defy researchers’ efforts to assess their mechanical reliability. The difficulty stems from a basic discrepancy between theoretical predictions and empirical observations of their fracture behavior. For instance, experiments conducted on transversely isotropic piezoceramics with cracks normal to the poling axis show an odd functional dependence between the failure load and the applied electric field, but the linear fracture theory indicates an even dependence. Some attempts have recently been made to explain the experimental results by accounting for the permeability of the air that fills the open cracks. However, we show in this paper that the presence of air does not alter the character of the analytical predictions, and the approximation of a perfectly insulating medium holds except in the case of an almost perfectly sharp crack. As an alternative approach, we propose to resolve the fundamental discrepancy by introducing a model for electrical nonlinearity in the ceramic based on its microstructure. Specifically, we simulate the polarization switching and saturation typical of ferroelectrics using a collection of discrete electric dipoles superimposed on a medium satisfying the linear piezoelectric constitutive law. With this model, we derive a local crack driving force which generates a qualitative match to experimental observations. The fracture criterion applies to cracks at any orientation in a piezoelectric sample under arbitrary loading conditions, and it requires no additional empirical characterization of the material.

Abstract:Journal of Intelligent Material Systems and Structures, Ahead of Print. In the past two decades, thin lead zirconate titanate (PZT) sensors have been widely used in the electro-mechanical impedance (EMI) technique for sensing applications, particularly for monitoring civil structures. They are typically surface bonded using an industrial adhesive to the monitored structure. The bond between a PZT sensor and structure must be sufficiently strong to transmit the response of the structure to the sensor. In this study, acrylic cubes bonded with PZT patches are subjected to high compressive strains above 2000 με to develop a better understanding of bonding conditions when structures undergo such high strains. Acrylic can undergo such high strains without developing fissures or cracks. Thus, the recorded EMI response only reflects changes in the bonding condition due to the development of strains. The experiments are also numerically supplemented by simulating various debonding conditions. At higher strains, it was observed that the admittance signatures tend to behave similarly to a freely vibrating PZT patch, indicating debonding around the periphery. Even after the complete unloading of the structure, the signatures did not return to their initial state, indicating a permanent partial debonding. The strains developed on a loaded structure are not uniform and can be localized due to structural imperfections, resulting in higher strains in the region where a sensor is bonded. The insights from this study will aid in expanding the scope of the application of PZT sensors for monitoring civil structures through better comprehension of the PZT-structure bond under high compressive strains.

Abstract:The effect of surface loads on Pb(Mg1/3Nb2/3)O3-PbTiO3 single crystal piezoelectric resonators was studied. Electrical impedance shifts at both resonance and anti-resonance frequencies due to surface loads were recorded for comparison among face-shear mode, thickness-shear mode, and thickness mode resonators. It was observed that electrical impedances of face shear mode resonators exhibited significantly higher sensitivity to surface load changes comparing with other resonators with similar dimensions, because of enhanced energy dissipation in face shear mode resonators, indicating a promising innovative face-shear mode single crystal piezoelectric sensing mechanism.

Abstract:Lead Zirconate Titanate [(ZrxTi1-x)O3 ]is used to make ultrasound transducers, sensors, and actuators due to its large piezoelectric coefficient. Several surfaces and subsurface micro defects develop within the Lead Zirconate Titanate (PZT) sensor due to delamination, corrosion, huge temperature fluctuation, etc., causing a decline in its performance. It is thus necessary to identify, locate, and quantify the defects. Non-Destructive Structural Health Monitoring (SHM) is the most optimal and economical method of evaluation. Traditional ultrasound SHM techniques have a huge impedance mismatch between air and any solid material. And most of the popular signal processing methods define time-series signals in only one domain which gives sub-optimal results. Thus to improve the accuracy of detection point contact excitation and detection methods have been implemented to determine the interaction of ultrasonic waves with microscale defects in the PZT. And Haar Discrete Wavelet Transformation (DWT) is applied to the time series data obtained from the Coulomb coupling setup. Using the above process, defect up to 100 um in diameter could be successfully distinguished and localized.

Abstract:In this paper, a numerical analysis of impact interfacial fracture for a piezoelectric bimaterial is provided. Starting from the basic equilibrium equation, a dynamic electro-mechanical FEM formulation is briefly presented. Then, the path-independent separated dynamic J integral is extended to piezoelectric bimaterials. Based on the relationship of the path-independent dynamic J integral and the stress and electric displacement intensity factors, the component separation method is used to calculate the stress and electric displacement intensity factors for piezoelectric bimaterials in this finite-element analysis. The response curves of the dynamic J integral, the stress and electric displacement intensity factors are obtained for both homogeneous material (PZT-4 and CdSe) and CdSe/PZT-4 bimaterial. The influences of the piezoelectricity and the electro-mechanical coupling factor on these responses are discussed. The effects of an applied electric field are also discussed.

Abstract:In this paper, the dynamic behavior of two parallel symmetric cracks in piezoelectric materials under harmonic anti-plane shear waves is investigated by use of the non-local theory for permeable crack surface conditions. To overcome the mathematical difficulties, a one-dimensional non-local kernel is used instead of a two-dimensional one for the problem to obtain the stress occurs near the crack tips. By means of the Fourier transform, the problem can be solved with the help of two pairs of dual integral equations that the unknown variables are the jumps of the displacement along the crack surfaces. These equations are solved using the Schmidt method. Numerical examples are provided. Contrary to the previous results, it is found that no stress and electric displacement singularity is present near the crack tip. The non-local elastic solutions yield a finite hoop stress near the crack tip, thus allowing for a fracture criterion based on the maximum stress hypothesis. The finite hoop stress at the crack tip depends on the crack length, the frequency of the incident wave, the distance between two cracks and the lattice parameter of the materials, respectively. Contrary to the impermeable crack surface condition solution, it is found that the dynamic electric displacement for the permeable crack surface conditions is much smaller than the results for the impermeable crack surface conditions. The results show that the dynamic field will impede or enhance crack propagation in the piezoelectric materials at different stages of the dynamic load.

Abstract:This work presents guided wave generation, sensing, and damage detection in metallic plates using in-plane shear (d36 type) piezoelectric wafers as actuators and sensors. The conventional lead zirconate titanate (PZT) based on induced in-plane normal strain (d31 type) has been widely used to excite and receive guided waves in plates, pipes or thin-walled structures. The d36 type of piezoelectric wafer, however, induces in-plane (or called face) shear deformation in the plane normal to its polarization direction. This form of electromechanical coupling generates more significant shear horizontal (SH) waves in certain wave propagation directions, whose amplitudes are much greater than those of Lamb waves. In this paper, an analysis of SH waves generated using in-plane shear electromechanical coupling is firstly presented, followed by a multiphysics finite element analysis for comparison purposes. Voltage responses of both the conventional d31 and the new d36 sensors are obtained for comparison purposes. Results indicate that this type of wafer has the potential to provide a simple quantitative estimation of damage in structural health monitoring.

Abstract:Since the electric fields and mechanical deformation in piezoelectric materials are coupled, the fracture behavior of a crack in such materials depends upon both applied mechanical loads and electrical loads. In this investigation, a three-dimensional analysis of a flat elliptical crack embedded in a piezoelectric material was performed by means of the Fourier transform method. Expressions for the crack opening displacement, interaction energy and the stress intensity factors are derived.
