Abstract:Electrocoagulation (EC) using electrodes made from iron scrap is a novel and promising strategy for arsenic (As) contaminated ground water remediation. In synthetic groundwater, amorphous hydrous ferric oxide (HFO) precipitates formed by the rapid dissolution of a sacrificial iron scrap anode adsorbed As very effectively. A competitive adsorption model developed in this study with parameters fitted for As and other coexisting anions (phosphate and silicate) was in good agreement with the observed results. It is indicated that the maximum adsorption capacity of HFO generated in the EC system was ∼0.70mol/mol. Reducing the As concentration in water from 500μg/L As(V) and As(III) to below 50μg/L (local drinking water standard in Bangladesh) required ∼8mg/L and ∼32mg/L iron respectively (pH=7.1±0.1, charge dosage rate=3 coulomb/L/min). It was found that coexisting cations (Ca2+ and Mg2+) neutralized the HFO surface charge, promoted aggregation and resulted in greater As removal. The presence of humic acid exhibited a negligible effect on As removal and HFO precipitate settling. Jar tests showed that the turbidity of the solution could be reduced to <1 NTU with the addition of 2mg/L Al3+.

Abstract:Because of its different concentrations, sewage can cause serious water pollution problems for aquatic organisms. Dicofol is a pesticide derived from organic chlorine that effectively targets ticks, though it is a subject of controversy because of its negative effects on the environment. In this study, an aluminium electrode was employed for the elimination of dicofol from a water-based solution through the process of electrocoagulation. Aluminium electrodes are characterized by SEM and FTIR techniques. The optimization process for several parameters such as the maximum removal percentage of Dicofol by APE was determined under the optimized conditions: electrolysis time, NaCl concentration, voltage, pH, initial Dicofol concentration. The pseudo-first-order rate constant of the aluminium plate electrodes was determined according to the results of the kinetic study. The electrical energy used to remove dicofol in the electrocoagulation process was determined on aluminium plate electrodes.
Efficient removal of insecticide "imidacloprid" from water by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes

Abstract:The oxidative degradation of imidacloprid (ICP) has been carried out by electrochemical advanced oxidation processes (EAOPs), anodic oxidation, and electro-Fenton, in which hydroxyl radicals are generated electrocatalytically. Carbon-felt cathode and platinum or boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes were used in electrolysis cell. To determine optimum operating conditions, the effects of applied current and catalyst concentration were investigated. The decay of ICP during the oxidative degradation was well fitted to pseudo-first-order reaction kinetics and absolute rate constant of the oxidation of ICP by hydroxyl radicals was found to be k abs(ICP) = 1.23 × 10(9) L mol(-1) s(-1). The results showed that both anodic oxidation and electro-Fenton process with BDD anode exhibited high mineralization efficiency reaching 91 and 94% total organic carbon (TOC) removal at 2 h, respectively. For Pt-EF process, mineralization efficiency was also obtained as 71%. The degradation products of ICP were identified and a plausible general oxidation mechanism was proposed. Some of the main reaction intermediates such as 6-chloronicotinic acid, 6-chloronicotinaldehyde, and 6-hydroxynicotinic acid were determined by GC-MS analysis. Before complete mineralization, formic, acetic, oxalic, and glyoxylic acids were identified as end-products. The initial chlorine and organic nitrogen present in ICP were found to be converted to inorganic anions Cl(-), NO₃(-), and NH₄(+).
Comparative experimental study on the COD removal in aqueous solution of pesticides by the electrocoagulation process using monopolar iron electrodes

Abstract:A comparative study for the COD removal of Chlorpyrifos, Fenitrothion (3%) and Acetamiprid (20%) by electrocoagulation process was performed. The effect of various parameters of electrocoagulation (EC) on removal efficiency was studied and optimized. The COD removal using nonpolar iron electrodes was affected by current density, contact time, initial pH and initial concentration of pesticides. The optimum conditions for the electrocoagulation process were identified as contact time (4, 5 and 10 min), for a maximum abatement of 100 mg/L pesticide solution, respectively. The results provide an important idea for the development electrocoagulation process to remove pesticides significantly along with COD removal using moderate iron concentration, thereby lowering the cost of treatment. Moreover, results show that the pesticide was removal quickly with a maximum rate of 87% for the contact time of 4 min, which revealed that pesticides wastewater can be treated using electrocoagulation.

Abstract:Introduction: Acetamiprid (AP) is one of the most widely used pesticides in the neonicotinoid class. AP residues in the environment have received considerable due to their potential toxicity to humans. Therefore, it is important to remove AP from the aqueous solution. Materials and Methods: In the current study, response surface methodology (RSM) was used as an efficient approach to optimize the removal of AP using the electro-Fenton (EF) process. The effects of the main variables, including reaction time, AP concentration, current density, and H2O2 dosage were investigated and optimized. ANOVA technique was also used to identify the Fisher’s value (F-value) and P-value of the model. Results: The predicted AP removal efficiency by the model was in good agreement with the obtained experimental results with correlation regression of 0.9885. The ANOVA test proved that the developed quadratic model was significant with very low P-values less than 0.05, the high F-value of 240.1, and regression coefficients close to 1 at a 95% confidence level. The optimum condition for AP removal efficiency of 99.02% was attained at the reaction time of 12 min, AP concentration of 3.5 mg L-1, the current density of 12 mA cm-2, and H2O2 dosage of 86 μL. Conclusion: RSM was employed as a suitable method to optimize the operating condition and maximize the AP removal. Herein, the EF process as an eco-friendly electrochemical advanced oxidation process (EAOP) successfully applied to remove AP from the water and wastewater.

Abstract:Imidacloprid is still a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide that is banned in many countries because of the associated environmental risks. Due to the inefficiency of conventional wastewater treatments for pesticide removal, new treatment methods are being investigated. Electrochemical methods, including electrocoagulation (EC), seem to be promising alternatives considering their effectiveness in removing various pollutants from wastewater. The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of electrode material, current density, ultrasound, and operation time on the efficiency of imidacloprid removal from a model solution by EC. The combination of aluminum electrodes and 20 A of applied current for 20 min resulted in total imidacloprid degradation. A simplified energy balance was introduced as a form of process evaluation. Combining ultrasound with EC resulted in 7% to 12% greater efficacy than using only EC.

Abstract:The commercial imidacloprid (IMD) insecticide [1-(6-chloro-3-pyridinyl) methyl-4,5-dihydro-N-nitro-1H-imidazole-2-amine] is widely used for the enhancement of crop production, but the intensive use of this insecticide has caused serious environmental problems. This work presents an electrochemical process for the removal of this insecticide using galvanostatic electrolysis at modified tantalum surface by lead dioxide film anode (Ta(PbO2)) anode. The electrolytic process was monitored by chemical oxygen demand (COD). The influence of operating parameters, such as current density, initial concentration of IMD, temperature and initial pH value was investigated. The COD decay follows a pseudo first-order kinetic and the process was under mass transport control. COD removal reach 97% when using an apparent current density of 100 mA cm−2, initial COD of 953 mg L−1 and at 25 °C after 4.5 h electrolysis time.

Abstract:The present study deals with the treatment of synthetic effluents of the textile industry, containing a mixture of reactive and dispersed dyes by electrocoagulation process employing all bipolar and monopolar connections of Fe–Al composite electrodes. The performance of the process was evaluated through the analysis of color removal, consumption energy, turbidity, and chemical oxygen demand (COD). The serial mode in bipolar connection is more efficient than the monopolar mode. After the treatment, it was possible to remove 98% color removal, 98.5% turbidity, and 88% COD. Kinetics, thermodynamics, isotherm modeling for removal of textile dyes using electrocoagulation process were studied. The electrocoagulation reaction followed the first-order reaction kinetics, and also, Langmuir model fit the adsorption isotherm spontaneous for optimal connection mode of composite electrodes (Iron/Al). The exothermic and spontaneous nature of the adsorption process was confirmed. An electrochemical study is carried out to study the corrosion of aluminum and iron in the presence of the synthetic effluent. The influence of temperature on the mass loss of electrodes and flocs is remarkable, and this is in agreement with the results of SEM coupled with EDX analysis which confirms that the rate of presence of aluminum and iron in the floc increases with temperature. The extracted solution was analyzed by atomic absorption spectroscopy to evaluate the residual concentration of iron and aluminum, and the latter increased with temperature increasing.

Abstract:A new configuration of aluminum electrodes has been performed in an electrocoagulation reactor (ECR) to remove toxic metals from synthetic wastewater. The ECR contains four concentric-cubic electrodes that were connected to the DC power supply with a bipolar mode. The ability of this reactor to eliminate 200 ppm Pb, 200 ppm Cd and 200 ppm Cu from wastewater was investigated under the effect of pH (4-10), applied current (0.2-2.6 A), and the reaction time of (4-60 min). Two grams of NaCl were added to each experiment to enhance the electrical conductivity and minimize the passivation of cathode surfaces. The experiments, analysis, and optimization were conducted using response surface methodology type Box-Behnken design (RSM-BBD) and the Minitab-statistical software program. The highest elimination of heavy metals was: Pb-99.73%, Cd-98.54%, and Cu-98.92% at pH 10, 1.4 A of the applied current, and 60 min of the reaction time. The total real consumption of anodes under these conditions was 0.55 g, and the energy consumption was 12.71 kWh/m3. All reactions of metal removal that occurred in the present EC reactor obey the kinetic of a first-order reaction. Thermodynamics parameters of present electrocoagulation removal of heavy metals indicate an endothermic, spontaneous nature, and random irregularity at the liquid-solid interaction. The highest values of removal efficiencies and the considerably lowest values of energy and electrode consumption proved that the electrocoagulation technology applies in wastewater treatment containing toxic metals. • The anode electrodes were perforated to decrease the amount of electrode consumption, while the cathode electrodes were not perforated. • The new EC reactor eliminated Pb-99.73%, Cd-98.54%, and Cu-98.92% of 200 mg/l of each metal at pH 10, applied current of 1.4 A, and reaction time of 60 min. Moreover, the consumption of energy and electrodes was significantly low. • The performance indicator (R 2 ) of the studied responses was higher than 0.95.

Abstract:This study presents a comprehensive comparison of the electro-osmosis treatments of heavy metal contaminated soil using electrokinetic geosynthetics (EKG) and iron electrodes in terms of both theoretical analysis and experimental research. The variation in the electrical parameters was analyzed, and the results show linear relationships between temperature and conductivity and between the soil and pore water conductivities. The average cathode contact resistance of iron is 60% smaller than that of EKG, whereas the average anode contact resistance of EKG is 56% smaller than that of iron. The values of the power consumption per unit mass of contaminants for EKG and iron are 1.895 and 1.989 kJ/g, respectively. After electro-osmosis, the number of soil pores increased, but the average area decreased, with an average area of 0.9100–1.0504 μm2. Based on microstructure analysis, we obtained higher electroosmotic efficiency and realized the effective analysis and utilization between macroscopic and microscopic parameters.

Abstract:The presence of heavy metal like chromium and lead in potable water/wastewater can cause serious health issues. Therefore, its proper treatment is required. In this work, chromium and lead are removed from synthetic wastewater using electrocoagulation (EC) process. The investigation has been performed with solution of varying concentration at various operating conditions by changing the value of parameters such as current density (CD), pH and electrode gap (EG)with various metal electrode arrangement of Fe–Fe, Al–Al, Fe–Al, and Al–Fe. The electrode arrangement of Fe–Fe had delivered better results compared to other electrode arrangements. The maximum chromium and lead reduction of 93.5% and 96.7% was obtained with the electrode arrangement of Fe/Fe at CD of 73.44 A/m 2 , pH 5, and process time of 90 min. Besides this the maximum chromium removal efficiency of 55.2% and lead removal efficiency of 58.3% were obtained with Al-Al electrode arrangement at the same operating conditions as that of Fe–Fe electrode arrangement. This work had demonstrated that heavy metal could be successfully removed through electrocoagulation process.

Abstract:Imidacloprid is a widely used neonicotinoid insecticide worldwide, and has attracted great concerns due to its potential threat to human and environment. Much effort was thus spent on developing the effective way for removing imidacloprid from water, but might also produce various degradation products with unknown risks. The hypothesis was then proposed that permanganate oxidation was probably the appropriate tool for eliminating imidacloprid and its toxicity through selective oxidation of specific groups. To that end, we studied the kinetics of permanganate/imidacloprid reaction by considering the effects of pH (5.0-9.0), temperature (15-35 °C), ionization strength (0.05-0.20 M), typical anions (Cl-, Br-, I-) and humic acid. Based on the identified products from mass spectrometer, the main reaction pathway was found to be the hydroxylation of C-H bond at imidazole ring, leading to the decreased toxicity evaluated by ECOSAR program. Our results demonstrate that permanganate oxidation should be a very promising technique for controlling imidacloprid contamination by effective detoxification through highly selective partial oxidation. Moreover, this study has also paved the way toward applying permanganate oxidation for in situ chemical remediation of imidacloprid, though the corresponding standards need to be established in advance.
Comparison of the Removal Efficiencies for Electro-Flotation and Electrocoagulation Wastewater Treatment Methods to Treat Effluents Discharged from Electroplating Industries

This study compared the efficiency of electro-flotation and electrocoagulation wastewater treatment methods to treat effluents discharged from electroplating industries based on removal efficiency, energy consumption, electrode consumption, and environmental aspects. Electro-flotation uses an electric current to generate hydrogen and oxygen bubbles, which allow contaminants to flow to the top of the treatment unit. However, the electrocoagulation process involves the use of direct current to accelerate the oxidation of the metal sacrificial anode and to generate positively charged ions that act as destabilizing agents for the emulsion. The electroplating wastewater sample solution (500ml) containing heavy metal ions (Zinc, Chromium, Nickel, Cadmium, and Copper) with a 50g/l metal ion concentration of each and a pH range of 7-10, were investigated using the two methods. Accordingly, the metal ions' degree of removal, energy consumption for the treatments, and electrode consumption 95-99%, 0.25-3.0 kWh/m3, and 2.0 kg/m3 respectively, were obtained using the elector-flotation. Whereas, 90–95% of metal ions' degree of removal, 1.0-5.0 kWh/m3 of energy consumption, and 10kg/m3 of electrode consumption, were obtained via the elector coagulation. The Fe-Fe electrode combination had the highest removal efficiencies of the heavy metal ions of Fe-Al, Al-Fe, and Al-Al combinations. Additionally, the effects of pH, time, and direct current on the removal efficiency of metal ions were investigated.
Enhanced Photodegradation of Imidacloprid Using ZnO@Ca‐Alginate Composites: Optimization of pH and pHzcp for Effective Water Treatment

Abstract:ZnO@Ca‐Alginate composites demonstrate high efficiency in degrading the pesticide imidacloprid under simulated solar light, achieving 80 % degradation in 2 hours. The complete mineralization of IM was confirmed within 3 hours, and it produced nontoxic byproducts. The optimal performance of the composite at neutral to slightly basic pH highlights its potential as a sustainable, reusable solution for treating pesticide‐contaminated water in agricultural regions. This research focused on the photodegradation of the insecticide imidacloprid (IM) via a ZnO@Ca‐Alginate composite catalyst to address water contamination issues, particularly in agricultural areas such as Palestine. The composite was synthesized and characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X‐ray diffraction (XRD), energy dispersive X‐ray (EDX), thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and Fourier transform infrared (FT‐IR) spectroscopy, confirming the presence of ZnO. Photocatalytic experiments under simulated solar light revealed significant IM degradation, with a 50 % reduction in 40 minutes, an 80 % reduction in 2 hours, and up to 94 % in 3 hours. The degradation efficiency was influenced by the point of zero charge (pHzcp) and solution pH, with optimal performance under neutral to slightly basic conditions. UV‐visible spectrophotometry, high‐performance liquid chromatography (HPLC), and total organic carbon (TOC) analyses verified complete IM mineralization, yielding CO2, Cl−, and NO3− after 3 hours. The ZnO@Ca‐Alginate composite demonstrated high reusability, highlighting its potential for treating pesticide‐contaminated water. This study emphasizes the need for efficient pollutant removal technologies in regions where agricultural pollutants are prevalent.

Heptachlor Epoxide -Pesticide- Removal from Aqueous Solutions Using Nano Zero Valent Iron: Operating Conditions, Response Surface Methodology, and Artificial Intelligence Neural Networks

Mahmoud There are many studies that detail how hazardous pesticides are to aquatic life, plants, animals, and humans, but there are fewer that describe how pesticides are treated during a separate treatment procedure. This study, which examines the removal of the highly toxic pesticide "heptachlor epoxide", is crucial to achieving SDG 6. Under operational circumstances, the prepared green nanoiron was successfully synthesized and characterized for the removal of heptachlor epoxide from aqueous solutions. For starting heptachlor epoxide concentrations of 100 and 10 μg/L at neutral medium pH 7, 0.8 g/L of green nZVI for 80 min, and a 200 RPM stirring rate, the removal efficiency varied between 55 and 100%, respectively. The RSM results indicated that the model R2 was 94.6%, and all operating conditions were significant to describe the removal efficiency with a p-value <0.05. The linear regression histogram indicated that the variation between expected and experimental removal efficiency ranged between (-1, 1%). The ANNs results by using MLP with network 6-3-1 indicated that nZVI was able to reduce heptachlor epoxide concentrations with a Sum of Squares Error of 0.052 for training and 0.177 for testing. Also, the ANNs described the importance of operating conditions and indicated that the most effective operating conditions were dose and less important was stirring rate, showing agreement with the obtained RSM results. Abstract:Treatment of industrial wastewaters by electrocoagulation is very efficient to remove numerous types of pollutant (organic, mineral, colored, metal). However, few researches are devoted to the elimination of metals contained in the generated sludge. The objective of this paper was to study the possible simultaneous removal of aluminum (issued from the electrodes) and chromium (initially present in the effluent) contained in the sludge by electrochemical migration. Electrocoagulation treatment of textile industrial wastewater in which chromium has been added was carried out using aluminum electrodes. Turbidity, COD, and TOC could be efficiently removed with abatement yields, respectively, at 97, 93, and 90%. For chromium, only 62% of the initial amount was eliminated by applying the highest current with a long operating time. The generated sludge contained high amounts of Cr and Al (749 and 1,260 mg/kg of dry sludge), far above the maximum level allowed by legislation. The possibility of removing these pollutants from the resulting sludge using electrokinetic technique was investigated. Acetic acid at 1 or 3 M and citric acid at 3 and 6 M were used as catholyte solutions to enhance the removal of aluminum and chromium(III). Best results for aluminum removal were obtained using 3 M acetic acid: up to 82% of the initial Al was recovered in the cathode chamber, whereas citric acid was more effective in chromium removal: up to 79% was transported to the cathode chamber with 6 M citric acid. Specific energy consumption is also discussed.

Abstract:This study examines the reduction efficiency of chemical pollution of freshwater by electrocoagulation (EC) process using aluminium (Al) and iron (Fe) electrodes. Several parameters affecting the EC efficiency were investigated in batch manner. Results indicate that both Al and Fe electrodes can eliminate satisfactorily the chemical pollutants of water. The Fe/Fe pair electrode showed an excellent efficiency in reducing turbidity (≈ 99%) within 30 min of time and at 3.0 A intensity. The COD value increased from 62 to 65% with current intensity from 0.3 to 1.0, and from 70 to 98% following the increase in intensity from 2.0 to 3.0A by using the Al electrode. The removal of COD reached 86% with Fe electrode (for 10 min) while it was 99% with Al electrode (after 45 min) using Al electrode (at 2.5 intensity). It was also found that the P value is greater than 0.05 for COD and less than 0.05 for TSS with both electrodes (Al, Fe). The finding also confirmed that the significant difference exists in the case of TSS reduction and it does not exist in the case of COD. Overall, the study underscores the performance of electrocoagulation using both Al and Fe electrodes for removing chemical pollutants in freshwater, highlighting its potential as a sustainable and adaptable solution for their application in water treatment units.

Abstract:Chromium is a hazardous compound from industrial processes, known for its toxicity, mutagenicity, teratogenicity, and carcinogenicity. Chemical methods are efficient but cost-effective alternatives with reduced sludge are sought. Electro-coagulation, utilizing low-cost iron plate electrodes, was explored for factual tannery wastewater treatment in this manuscript. Operating parameters such as initial chromium concentration, voltage, electrode number, operating time, agitation speed and current density has been studied to evaluate the treatment effeciency. Under optimal conditions (15 V, 0.4 mA/cm 2 , 200 rpm, 330 ppm chromium, 8 iron electrodes with a total surface area of 0.1188 m 2 , 3 h), chromium elimination was 98.76%. Iron anode consumption, power use, and operating cost were 0.99 gm/L, 0.0143 kW-h/L, and 160 EGP/kg of chromium eliminated, respectively. Kinetics studies were pursued first-order reaction (97.99% correlation), and Langmuir isotherms exhibited strong conformity (Langmuir R 2 : 99.99%). A predictive correlation for chromium elimination (R 2 : 97.97%) was developed via statistical regression. At HARBY TANNERY factory in Egypt, industrial sewage treatment achieved a final chromium disposal rate of 98.8% under optimized conditions.

Treatment of industrial electroplating wastewater for metals removal via electrocoagulation continous flow reactors

Abstract:Abstract A real industrial electroplating rinsing wastewater was collected and subjected to physical and chemical examination. The study showed that it can be categorized as high strength wastewater, at pH- 2, COD 1430 mg/l, and high level of metals above permissible limits, namely: 150, 30, 25, and 2.9 for Ni, Cu, Zn, and Fe mg/l respectively. Therefore, metals must be adequately removed before discharging to avoid any hazardous impact on the environment. Similar synthetic wastewater was prepared to study the effect of chemical coagulation for the precipitation of metals. The optimum removal rate was achieved by using a combination of lime and ferric chloride at 100 and 30 mg/l respectively. The chemically treated electroplating wastewater was subjected to an electrocoagulation study. A comparison between iron and stainless-steel electrodes for the removal of metals was investigated. Furthermore, the effect of different electric voltages, and contact time on metals removal efficiency were also examined. It was found that the optimum removal capacity was achieved when a stainless steel electrode was employed in the presence of ferric chloride as coagulant, at 10 volts, 30 min. contact time, and pH 9 for synthetic solution. In a batch treatment system, the real industrial wastewater was treated at the predetermined optimum operating conditions; the removal of metals was 92.1%, 87.8% and 82.9% for Ni. Zn, and Cu respectively. By employing a continuous flow reactor for the treatment of the same real wastewater and under the same operating conditions, metals removal rate increased to 98.9%, 97.4% and 96.6% for Ni. Zn, and Cu respectively. The level of metals in the final treated wastewater copes with Egyptian Environmental Regulation. The overall results confirmed that the electro-coagulation (EC) technology offers an effective alternative process in combination with the conventional chemical coagulation process for reaching high removal performance of toxic metals from the electroplating wastewater. The advantage of EC technique is achieving high treatment efficiency instead of expensive chemical reagents, high construction cost and/or other conventional processes. In addition, the final treated water can be reused for rinsing process in the electroplating industry and/or discharging without any environmental hazard effect. It is also recommended to employ solar energy instead of electricity to reduce cost of operation.

Abstract:The aim of this study was to compare the degradation efficiency (DE%) of imidacloprid as a model pesticide by electro-Fenton (EF) and photoelectro-Fenton processes (PEF) using undivided three-electrode electrochemical cell and UV irradiation in a batch mode. The potential of the working electrode (graphite) was fixed at −1.0 V versus the saturated calomel electrode. The selected operating conditions for treatment of imidacloprid (20 mg/L) were: pH 2.8, Fe2+ concentration of 0.36 mM and Na2SO4 concentration of 0.15 M as the background electrolyte, which produced a DE% of 59.23 and 80.49 % for EF and PEF after 180 min, respectively. Considerable synergistic effect between EF and UV processes was observed due to the regeneration of Fe2+ ions and more production of hydroxyl radicals (·OH). Besides, accumulation of the electro-generated H2O2 in the electrochemical system as the source of ·OH radicals was confirmed. Moreover, total organic carbon measurements under the optimized condition demonstrated that 50.73 and 67.15 % of the organic substrates were mineralized after 300 min of the treatment by the EF and PEF, respectively. Eventually, the experimental results revealed that the degradation and mineralization rates of the pesticide followed pseudo-first-order kinetics; however, the rate constants of the mineralization were lower than the degradation ones owing to the generated intermediates, which required more treatment during the processes.
