Abstract:Biomass-derived carbons are emerging materials with a wide range of catalytic properties, such as large surface area and porosity, which make them ideal candidates to be used as heterogeneous catalysts and catalytic supports. Their unique physical and chemical properties, such as their tunable surface, chemical inertness, and hydrophobicity, along with being environmentally friendly and cost effective, give them an edge over other catalysts. The biomass-derived carbon materials are compatible with a wide range of reactions including organic transformations, electrocatalytic reactions, and photocatalytic reactions. This review discusses the uses of materials produced from biomass in the realm of heterogeneous catalysis, highlighting the different types of carbon materials derived from biomass that are potential catalysts, and the importance and unique properties of heterogeneous catalysts with different preparation methods are summarized. Furthermore, this review article presents the relevant work carried out in recent years where unique biomass-derived materials are used as heterogeneous catalysts and their contribution to the field of catalysis. The challenges and potential prospects of heterogeneous catalysis are also discussed.

Abstract:The growing population and waste biomass accumulation are leading to increased environmental pollution and climate change. Waste biomass comprising of nutrient rich components has promising potential to produce value-added products for sustainable environmental solutions. This review explores the critical role of bio-based heterogeneous catalysts in enabling sustainable waste biomass utilization. In industrial chemical transformations, over 95% involve catalysts, with more than 90% being heterogeneous systems, prized for their robustness, ease of product separation, and reusability. Bio-based heterogeneous catalysts address the pressing need for sustainable waste biomass management, allowing the conversion of diverse waste biomasses into biodiesel as valuable products. Research on these catalysts, particularly for biodiesel production, has shown yields exceeding 90% with enhanced catalyst reusability. This surge in research is evident from the increasing number of published articles, notably in 2022 and 2023, highlighting growing interest and importance in the scientific community. The synthesis of these catalysts is examined, including novel approaches and techniques to enhance their efficiency, selectivity, and stability. The challenges with their feasible solutions of heterogeneous catalysts in catalyst-based processes are addressed. Altogether, this review underscores the immense potential of bio-based heterogeneous catalysts in sustainable waste biomass utilization, aligning with resource efficiency and environmental conservation goals while offering distinct insights and perspectives on the latest innovations in the field.

Abstract:Biomass gasification is one of the most viable approaches for exploiting biomass. It systemically employs several agents in stimulating the desired reactions that lead to the conversion of biomass feed stocks to fuels/other products. Owing to the biodiversity of the products of biomass gasification, they are fast becoming substitutes for fossil-based products/fuels. In order to ensure optimal production of potential bioproducts, the process conditions of a gasification process have to be essentially controlled within the ambience of high throughput. Based on existing literature, biomass gasification to fuels is not essentially new; however, till date, none of the existing works seeks to unveil the role of heterogeneous catalysis in biomass gasification toward ensuring high bioproducts yield. Heterogeneous catalysis seems to play a crucial role in biomass gasification owing to the fact that catalyst involvement in gasification processes helps to lower the activation energy of specific reactions; hence, under thermal influence, the catalysts tend to hasten such reactions for the desired conversions. Furthermore, it is also pertinent to take into consideration viable approaches for extending or maintaining the service life of the catalyst employed by deploying apt modalities that abate catalyst poisoning (aging, deactivation and fouling); this paper seeks to cover such challenges.

Abstract:Biomass is recognized as an ideal CO2 neutral, abundant, and renewable resource substitute to fossil fuels. The rich proton content in most biomass derived materials, such as ethanol, 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) and glycerol allows it to be an effective hydrogen carrier. The oxidation derivatives, such as 2,5-difurandicarboxylic acid from HMF, glyceric acid from glycerol are valuable products to be used in biodegradable polymers and pharmaceuticals. Therefore, combining biomass-derived compound oxidation at the anode and hydrogen evolution reaction at the cathode in a biomass electrolysis or photo-reforming reactor would present a promising strategy for coproducing high value chemicals and hydrogen with low energy consumption and CO2 emissions. This review aims to combine fundamental knowledge on photo and electro-assisted catalysis to provide a comprehensive understanding of the general reaction mechanisms of different biomass-derived molecule oxidation. At the same time, catalyst requirements and recent advances for various feedstock compounds are also reviewed in detail. Technoeconomic assessment and life cycle analysis are performed on various feedstocks to assess the relative benefits of various processes, and finally critical prospects are given on the challenges and opportunities for technology development to meet the sustainability requirement of the future global energy economy.

Abstract:Abstract Catalysis is the essential technology for chemical transformation, including production of fuels from the fossil resources petroleum, natural gas, and coal. Typical catalysts for these conversions are robust porous solids incorporating metals, metal oxides, and/or metal sulfides. As efforts are stepping up to replace fossil fuels with biomass, new catalysts for the conversion of the components of biomass will be needed. Although the catalysts for biomass conversion might be substantially different from those used in the conversion of fossil feedstocks, the latter catalysts are a starting point in today's research. Major challenges lie ahead in the discovery of efficient biomass conversion catalysts, as well as in the discovery of catalysts for conversion of CO 2 and possibly water into liquid fuels.

Abstract:Biorefineries have been profiled as potential alternatives to increase biomass use at the industrial level. However, more efforts are required to improve the sustainability of these facilities through process improvement and product portfolio increase. The catalytic conversion of biomass to chemicals and energy vectors is one of the most studied research lines today. The open literature has described catalytic pathways for producing biofuels and platform molecules using this renewable resource. Nevertheless, few literature reviews have aimed to analyze the role of the catalytic conversion of biomass in biorefineries while considering the following items: (i) biocatalysis, (ii) carbon dioxide conversion, (iii) design based on catalytic biomass upgrading, and (iv) sustainability metrics. This paper reviews several processes where catalysis has been applied to improve yields and conversion to elucidate the potential of this research field to boost biomass implementation in different productive sectors. This paper provides an overview of the catalytic conversion of biomass into a series of biofuels and high-value-added products, involving key topics related to catalyst performance, use, applications, and recent trends. In addition, several research gaps and ideas are highlighted based on previous studies. In conclusion, the catalytic conversion of biomass has the potential to increase biorefineries' sustainability. Nevertheless, more studies focused on (i) the production of new catalysts using renewable resources, (ii) the techno-economic and environmental assessment of processes involving catalysis, and (iii) the influence of involving biomass valorization via heterogeneous catalysis in existing facilities are required to obtain a real understanding of catalytic upgrades' benefits.

Abstract:Sustainable development is imperative, and the worldwide energy production must focus on the transition from petroleum derivatives to biomass-based biofuels and bioproducts to achieve a bio-based economy. The global interest in the processing of waste biomass to obtain bio-based products is continuously increasing. However, biorefineries have not yet been consolidated. The effective conversion of biomass components for the generation of value-added biochemicals and biofuels is a determining factor for the economic success of biorefineries. Therefore, exhaustive research has been performed to consolidate the biorefinery industry. This review summarizes the current advances in liquid biofuel production and solid catalysts prepared from waste biomass, as well as their advantages, drawbacks, and statistical data. It offers an extensive perspective, covering conventional methods and cutting-edge techniques such as biochemical and thermochemical biomass conversion technologies (e.g., hydrolysis, fermentation, pyrolysis, and gasification) to produce bioalcohols, biodiesel, renewable diesel, bio-jet, and bio-oil. In addition, the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts using residual biomass and different synthesis routes and their role in biofuel production were analyzed. This review contributes to the analysis of the importance of identifying and valorizing a wide spectrum of raw materials (i.e., urban, forestry, industrial, and agricultural) that have the potential to be used as catalyst precursors and biofuel feedstock. Finally, a techno-economic analysis, the main challenges, and the future scope of the diverse methods used to prepare biofuels and catalysts are discussed. This review examines numerous aspects from biomass to catalysts, thus providing relevant information for researchers, students, policymakers, and industry experts.

Abstract:Depletion of oil reserves, increasing prices of petroleum products, and environmental concerns related to air pollution are the main driving forces for utilizing renewable energy resources to replace fossil fuels. Vegetable oils can be used to produce biodiesel. Biodiesel is obtained by transesterification of vegetable oil with alcohol using homogeneous or heterogeneous catalysts. Commercial homogeneous catalysts in the biodiesel production industry are facing challenges such as separation difficulties and severe corrosion which will lead to the increment of production and maintenance cost. Herein, this paper focuses on the comprehensive review of literature reported on the usage of heterogeneous catalyst used in biodiesel production. Compared to other commercial catalysts, the usage of heterogeneous catalyst possesses several advantages such as abundantly available, cheaper raw materials, reusable, non-toxic and biodegradable. Carbon material synthesized from biomass which acts as the efficient support for active sites due to its high porosity and surface area characteristic has been studied widely.

Abstract:Workin′ 6 to 5: A highly active heterogeneous catalyst, Pd/SBA-15(DP), promotes the selective decarbonylation of biomass-derived HMF to furfural alcohol with a high yield, up to 96 %, in mild conditions. The route offers a simple and effective method of linking C6 and C5 molecules in the biomass conversion value chain. In addition to HMF the catalyst is effective towards the decarbonylation of other biomass-derived aldehydes, also. Abstract:The production of fuels and chemicals from renewable lignocellulosic biomass resources has been a major research focus in the last few decades. The most efficient method for synthesizing value-added chemical products from sustainable feedstocks is direct catalytic conversion, however, the multifunctional and highly oxygenated biomass-derived substrates are significantly different from petroleum-based feedstocks. Thus, systematic development of new catalytic materials is required to take advantage of the only substantial source of renewable carbon. In this review, we discuss the foundational methodologies that enable rational catalyst design through the investigation of surface-adsorbate interactions and the elucidation of descriptors for selectivity control. Molecular spectroscopies, efficient and predictive computational modeling, rigorous kinetic investigations, and highly controlled materials synthesis have generated fundamental insights leading to general catalyst design principles in biomass upgrading processes. The application of each technique in biomass research is discussed in the context of several case studies, with a focus on the unique insights available from each technique. Moreover, the interplay among multiple techniques, particularly between experimental and computational methods, is also highlighted. Despite the impressive progress made in the biomass field, major roadblocks still exist due to the complexity in the composition and structure of both substrates and catalysts. We share our perspectives regarding future needs in selective catalytic conversions of multifunctional substrates and methods for accelerating catalyst development.
Photo-/thermal synergies in heterogeneous catalysis: Towards low-temperature (solar-driven) processing for sustainable energy and chemicals

Abstract:There is growing recognition that cooperative effects exist under dual-mode (photo-thermal) heterogeneous catalytic excitation that offer genuine prospects in the transition to a sustainable energy and chemicals economy. Solar beams can act as practical combined source of photons and heat (via non-radiative relaxation after optical absorption) and lead to process intensification. This review provides a critical update and appraisal of advances in photo-/thermal synergies in catalysis, now a burgeoning field. It begins by classifying possible co-excitation synergies now driving a paradigm shift in catalyst design towards inclusion of pan-spectral absorbers, e.g., narrow-gap semiconductors and/or plasmonic nanoparticulate metals. Photo-thermo- (micro)reactors and concentrators are surveyed and the photophysics of electronic excitation is briefly outlined. Emphasis is on the impact of dual-mode excitation on selected processes of importance in tomorrow's solar-biorefineries, i.e., process hydrogen generation by oxygenate(s) reforming, specialty compounds by oxygenates conversion, CO2 reduction/hydrogenation for solar fuels, and Fischer-Tropsch synthesis for renewable hydrocarbons.
