Abstract:To improve the energy conversion of a micro-channel reactor, an innovative micro-channel catalyst support with a micro-porous surface is proposed and fabricated by a layered powder sintering and dissolution method (LPSDM). The catalyst adhesion strength is analyzed by an ultrasonic vibration test and results show the catalyst has a 7 wt. % loss on the catalyst support with micro-porous surface and a 16 wt. % loss on the non-porous surface. Subsequently, the coated catalyst support is applied to methanol steam reforming for hydrogen production. Results show that the micro-channel catalyst supports with micro-porous and non-porous surfaces respectively have a hydrogen production rate of 18.07 ml/min and 9.65 ml/min at 573 K under the inlet flow rate of 30 mu l/min. Compared with the catalyst support with a non-porous surface, the catalyst support with a micro-porous surface shows better catalyst adhesion and obvious advantages in hydrogen production rate and methanol conversion. Abstract:ConspectusThirty years ago, George A. Olah proposed the concept of the methanol economy, where methanol replaces fossil fuels as a means of energy storage, ground transportation fuel, and raw material for the manufacture of other carbon-based products. Over the years, with rising global warming concerns, the concept has evolved. A special interest is devoted to the development of catalytic processes that allow the transformation of carbon dioxide, via methanol, into CO2 neutral liquid hydrocarbons. These products could replace the oil-based fuels currently used by combustion engines. The rapid depletion of such fuels would avoid a considerable amount of CO2 emissions during the current energy transition.Over the past decade, we have focused on different key processes that should allow for maximal atom efficiency and, therefore, minimal energy consumption in a field, CO2 valorization, that can easily become a zero-sum game. In this Account, we highlight the importance of catalyst design to overcome the process challenges in the production of liquid fuels from methanol. Additionally, progress in multifunctional catalysts able to directly convert, in one single reactor, CO2 to liquid fuels is also discussed in detail. This integrated option is of particular interest since it allows an important decrease in operational units while increasing throughput by converting, in situ, a thermodynamically limited intermediate.

Abstract:The synthesis of renewable fuels from abundant water or the greenhouse gas CO2 is a major step toward creating sustainable and scalable energy storage technologies. In the last few decades, much attention has focused on the development of nonprecious metal-based catalysts and, in more recent years, their integration in solid-state support materials and devices that operate in water. This review surveys the literature on 3d metal-based molecular catalysts and focuses on their immobilization on heterogeneous solid-state supports for electro-, photo-, and photoelectrocatalytic synthesis of fuels in aqueous media. The first sections highlight benchmark homogeneous systems using proton and CO2 reducing 3d transition metal catalysts as well as commonly employed methods for catalyst immobilization, including a discussion of supporting materials and anchoring groups. The subsequent sections elaborate on productive associations between molecular catalysts and a wide range of substrates based on carbon, quantum dots, metal oxide surfaces, and semiconductors. The molecule-material hybrid systems are organized as "dark" cathodes, colloidal photocatalysts, and photocathodes, and their figures of merit are discussed alongside system stability and catalyst integrity. The final section extends the scope of this review to prospects and challenges in targeting catalysis beyond "classical" H2 evolution and CO2 reduction to C1 products, by summarizing cases for higher-value products from N2 reduction, C x>1 products from CO2 utilization, and other reductive organic transformations.

Abstract:Methanol is an attractive energy vector in a closed loop including its synthesis from CO2 and H2 and on-demand reforming to the starting feedstocks. Catalytic materials for the two reactions were mostly studied separately, with very few works assessing the feasibility of the same system for both. Here, key kinetic drivers of methanol synthesis (MS) and methanol steam reforming (MSR) were identified for the main catalyst families, with special focus on Cu-ZnO-Al2 O3 , In2 O3 , and Pd/ZrO2 . It was shown that the relative activity level was preserved in either direction, whereas the distinctly favored (reverse) water-gas shift modulated selectivity differently. Low selectivity in kinetically controlled MS could be overcome in MSR by exploiting thermodynamics as the driving force, with many catalysts unfit for MS still comprising appealing candidates for MSR and only few being suited for MS as well as MSR. Overall, readily identifiable properties describing catalyst behavior in the forward and backward reactions were highlighted, effectively linking research in the two fields and setting a stronger basis for developing a methanol-based hydrogen storage unit with a single reactor.
Biogas improvement as renewable energy through conversion into methanol: A perspective of new catalysts based on nanomaterials and metal organic frameworks

Abstract:In recent years, the high cost and availability of energy sources have boosted the implementation of strategies to obtain different types of renewable energy. Among them, methane contained in biogas from anaerobic digestion has gained special relevance, since it also permits the management of a big amount of organic waste and the capture and long-term storage of carbon. However, methane from biogas presents some problems as energy source: 1) it is a gas, so its storage is costly and complex, 2) it is not pure, being carbon dioxide the main by-product of anaerobic digestion (30%–50%), 3) it is explosive with oxygen under some conditions and 4) it has a high global warming potential (27–30 times that of carbon dioxide). Consequently, the conversion of biogas to methanol is as an attractive way to overcome these problems. This process implies the conversion of both methane and carbon dioxide into methanol in one oxidation and one reduction reaction, respectively. In this dual system, the use of effective and selective catalysts for both reactions is a critical issue. In this regard, nanomaterials embedded in metal organic frameworks have been recently tested for both reactions, with very satisfactory results when compared to traditional materials. In this review paper, the recent configurations of catalysts including nanoparticles as active catalysts and metal organic frameworks as support materials are reviewed and discussed. The main challenges for the future development of this technology are also highlighted, that is, its cost in environmental and economic terms for its development at commercial scale.

Abstract:About a decade after the energy transformation (Energiewende) started in Germany, it is now clear that the vision about a national all-electric energy system based upon solar and bio-based energy is not realistic. Such a hypothetical system cannot replace the function of a fossil-based system augmented with local renewable energy resources (RES) stemming from solar, wind, biomass, and hydroelectricity. Over the last few years, the vision grew globally that a combination of local RES and a global trade system for RES via hydrogen and its derivatives will be the functional solution for defossilizing the energy supply systems. The core element for this vision is the interconversion between free electrons and electrons bound in chemical bonds. This is impossible without catalysis becoming the central family of technologies for creating renewable molecular energy carriers. They combine high storage capacities with compatibility to the fossil liquid and gaseous energy carriers for which we have global technologies already in place. The interconversion of free electrons into bound electrons allows the transport of RES and solves the large-scale storage issue introduced by the volatility of local RES alone. Energy storage and chemical energy conversion become two fundamental capabilities of future energy systems resting both on the command and mega-scale realization of catalytic processes. The investigation of model systems for heterogeneous catalysts catching some of the complexity of real catalyst systems may add substantially to an attempt to rationally design catalysts and catalytic materials to effectively harvest and store energy. Five case studies discuss an approach to model disperse metal catalysts and its use in thermal and photo chemical processes.

Abstract:With the continuous development of human society, the shortages of fossil resource and environmental pollution are increasingly prominent. Hydrogen is a clean and efficient alternative energy, among various hydrogen production technologies, methanol reforming has been regarded as a promising candidate to produce hydrogen for daily energy supply due to its low cost and safe transportation. In this review, we discuss the sources of methanol and the methods of methanol reforming for hydrogen production. Then, we focus on the catalysts for methanol reforming and their preparation methods. Particular attention is paid to the structural design and manufacturing process to make methanol reforming microreactors. We also summarize recent studies on the practical applications of methanol reforming technologies, as well as the capture and utilization of the generated carbon to reduce its emission. Finally, the prospect challenges of methanol reforming for highly efficient hydrogen production technologies and contribution to the “double carbon” goals and the challenges are discussed. In summary, this review will be conducive to the development of hydrogen-methanol economy for practical and industry applications.

The production of methanol heavily relies on the utilization of catalysts and industrial reactors. Abstract:At present, methanol is one of the most basic organic chemical raw materials and energy storage media. With the development of chemical technology and energy storage technology, its application becomes more and more extensive, and the methanol market prospects are unlimited. Industrial-scale methanol is generally prepared by using synthesis gas containing hydrogen, carbon monoxide, and carbon dioxide as raw materials and reacting under a certain pressure, temperature, and catalyst. Therefore, the development of the methanol industry largely depends on the development of catalysts and the improvement of their performance. Metal catalysts are mainly used in the industry for reaction. This article reviews several metal catalysts used to synthesize methanol from syngas. Copper-based and iron-based catalysts are widely used, and the emerging rhodium and its ligand catalysts exhibit good catalytic performance in low-temperature catalysis. In the future, the scientific research team will focus on in-depth research on preparation methods, active centers, catalytic reaction kinetics, durability, metal ligands, raw material prices, etc., to lay a solid foundation for the industrial application of syngas to methanol in advance.
Synergies between Direct Air Capture Technologies and Solar Thermochemical Cycles in the Production of Methanol

Abstract:Methanol is an example of a valuable chemical that can be produced from water and carbon dioxide through a chemical process that is fully powered by concentrated solar thermal energy and involves three steps: direct air capture (DAC), thermochemical splitting and methanol synthesis. In the present work, we consider the whole value chain from the harvesting of raw materials to the final product. We also identify synergies between the aforementioned steps and collect them in five possible scenarios aimed to reduce the specific energy consumption. To assess the scenarios, we combined data from low and high temperature DAC with an Aspen Plus® model of a plant that includes water and carbon dioxide splitting units via thermochemical cycles (TCC), CO/CO2 separation, storage and methanol synthesis. We paid special attention to the energy required for the generation of low oxygen partial pressures in the reduction step of the TCC, as well as the overall water consumption. Results show that suggested synergies, in particular, co-generation, are effective and can lead to solar-to-fuel efficiencies up to 10.2% (compared to the 8.8% baseline). In addition, we appoint vacuum as the most adequate strategy for obtaining low oxygen partial pressures.

Abstract:The intermittency of renewable electricity requires the deployment of energy-storage technologies as global energy grids become more sustainably sourced. Upcycling carbon dioxide (CO2) and intermittently generated renewable hydrogen to stored products such as methanol (MeOH) allows the cyclic use of carbon and addresses the challenges of storage energy density, size and transportability as well as responsiveness to energy production and demand better than most storage alternatives. Deploying this storage solution efficiently and at scale requires the optimization of production conditions to ensure predictable and maximum long-term process performance. Key to enabling this solution is the generation of highly productive syngas that is rich in carbon monoxide (CO) via reverse water-gas shift (RWGS) or solid-oxide electrolysis cell technologies. The focus herein is the RWGS reaction as it enables a solar-to-fuel efficiency of around 10% that can be deployable at a commercial scale. The need for a higher-efficiency route to renewable MeOH is discussed, and a comparative technoeconomic analysis of two solar-derived MeOH (solar MeOH) strategies is presented: the solar-CO-rich (based on the solar-RWGS process) and the solar-direct-CO2 routes.

Abstract:Abstract Catalysis is the essential technology for chemical transformation, including production of fuels from the fossil resources petroleum, natural gas, and coal. Typical catalysts for these conversions are robust porous solids incorporating metals, metal oxides, and/or metal sulfides. As efforts are stepping up to replace fossil fuels with biomass, new catalysts for the conversion of the components of biomass will be needed. Although the catalysts for biomass conversion might be substantially different from those used in the conversion of fossil feedstocks, the latter catalysts are a starting point in today's research. Major challenges lie ahead in the discovery of efficient biomass conversion catalysts, as well as in the discovery of catalysts for conversion of CO 2 and possibly water into liquid fuels.

Abstract:Technological approaches which enable the effective utilization of CO2 for manufacturing value-added chemicals and fuels can help to solve environmental problems derived from large CO2 emissions associated with the use of fossil fuels. One of the most interesting products that can be synthesized from CO2 is methanol, since it is an industrial commodity used in several chemical products and also an efficient transportation fuel. In this review, we highlight the recent advances in the development of heterogeneous catalysts and processes for the direct hydrogenation of CO2 to methanol. The main efforts focused on the improvement of conventional Cu/ZnO based catalysts and the development of new catalytic systems targeting the specific needs for CO2 to methanol reactions (unfavourable thermodynamics, production of high amount of water and high methanol selectivity under high or full CO2 conversion). Major studies on the development of active and selective catalysts based on thermodynamics, mechanisms, nano-synthesis and catalyst design (active phase, promoters, supports, etc.) are highlighted in this review. Finally, a summary concerning future perspectives on the research and development of efficient heterogeneous catalysts for methanol synthesis from CO2 will be presented.

Abstract:The success of catalytic schemes for the large-scale valorization of CO2 does not only depend on the development of active, selective and stable catalytic materials but also on the overall process design. Here we present a multidisciplinary study (from catalyst to plant and techno-economic/lifecycle analysis) for the production of green methanol from renewable H2 and CO2. We combine an in-depth kinetic analysis of one of the most promising recently reported methanol-synthesis catalysts (InCo) with a thorough process simulation and techno-economic assessment. We then perform a life cycle assessment of the simulated process to gauge the real environmental impact of green methanol production from CO2. Our results indicate that up to 1.75 ton of CO2 can be abated per ton of produced methanol only if renewable energy is used to run the process, while the sensitivity analysis suggest that either rock-bottom H2 prices (1.5 $ kg−1) or severe CO2 taxation (300 $ per ton) are needed for a profitable methanol plant. Besides, we herein highlight and analyze some critical bottlenecks of the process. Especial attention has been paid to the contribution of H2 to the overall plant costs, CH4 trace formation, and purity and costs of raw gases. In addition to providing important information for policy makers and industrialists, directions for catalyst (and therefore process) improvements are outlined.

Abstract:To tackle the grand twin challenges of sustainable energy supply and climate change, Small Structures of the advanced catalysts can play a central role in not only promoting the energy conversion such as green hydrogen production and energy storage, but also mitigating green-house gas threats for value-added fuel conversion. Catalysis, one of the most active and diversified research fields, is pivotal to achieving the zero-emission target in the coming decades. The significant advancements have been witnessed in material design, experimental technology, and fundamental knowledge. To document the state-of-the-art of these advances, this Special Issue features 7 research articles and 8 reviews, covering a broad spectrum of the advanced catalysis for renewable energy conversion and storage: electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and thermal catalysis. Focusing on water splitting reactions for green hydrogen production, there are three review articles about the design of new catalysts including 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (Q Zhang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200109) and Ni-based MOFs (D H Taffa et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200263), and advances in in situ characterization platforms (J-F Li et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200201). Four research articles introduce new photocatalytic hydrogen processes based on mesoporous semiconductors (R Marschall et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200184) and 2D carbon nitride catalysts (L Wang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200264), photoelectrochemical water oxidation using doped titania nanotubes (K Maeda et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200229), and porous carbon based electrocatalytic water splitting reactions (Y Yamauchi et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200235). B-Y Xia et al. present their perspectives on water splitting at a larger scale, discussing the challenges and strategies for proton-exchange-membrane-based water electrolyzers (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200130). Relating to the concept of catalytic process for value-added products, G Wu and co-workers present the electrochemical nitrate conversion to ammonia (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200202), whereas J Liang and co-workers provide a critical overview on the electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reactions (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200266). In a research article, K Nakajima's team demonstrate their strategy to catalytic de-hydration of glucose to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200224). By using the concept of synergistic catalysis, B-Q Li, Q Zhang, and co-workers investigate high-performing catalysts for an energy storage system of lithium-sulfur batteries (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200205). The guest editors do wish this special issue can shed light on the catalytic reaction mechanism and understanding of rational catalyst design in this fast-growing research field. We believe that the sustained research effort in rational Small Structure innovation would make big impact on sustainable energy supply and climate change.
Producing hydrogen by catalytic steam reforming of methanol using non-noble metal catalysts

Abstract:Current energy systems have a significant environmental impact and contribute to the climate change. The future energy systems must call upon clean and renewable sources, capable of producing energy with low CO2 emission, hence partly decarbonizing the energy sector. Producing H2 by catalytic steam reforming of methanol (CSRM) is gaining interest for its specific applications in fuel cells, in a decentralized H2 production, or to locally boost the heat content of e.g. natural gas. Supported metal catalysts enhance the endothermic steam-driven methanol conversion. The paper discusses the CSRM manufactures and assesses 2 novel, cheap and efficient catalysts (Co/α-Al2O3 and MnFe2O4). The performance of the Co/α-Al2O3 catalyst is significantly superior to MnFe2O4. The methanol conversion exceeds 95% with high H2 yields (>2.5 mol H2/mol CH3OH) and low CO and CO2 by-product formation. The methanol reaction is very fast and a nearly constant product distribution is achieved for gas-catalyst contact times in excess of 0.3 s. The catalyst maintains its efficiency and selectivity for several days of reaction. The hydrogen productivity of the Co/α-Al2O3 is about 0.9 L H2 gcat-1 h-1., nearly a fourfold of the MnFe2O4 alternative. The different occurring reactions are combined in a kinetics analysis and demonstrate the high rate of reaction and the predicted product distribution. A catalytic sintered metal fleece reactor is finally developed, mostly in view of its integration with a solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC). The assessed CSRM system clearly merits further pilot plant research.

Abstract:Methane and carbon dioxide are the main contributors to global warming, with the methane effect being 25 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. Although the sources of methane are diverse, it is a very volatile and explosive gas. One way to store the energy content of methane is through its conversion to methanol. Methanol is a liquid under ambient conditions, easy to transport, and, apart from its use as an energy source, it is a chemical platform that can serve as a starting material for the production of various higher-value products. Accordingly, the transformation of methane to methanol has been extensively studied in the literature, using traditional catalysts as different types of zeolites. However, in the last few years, a new generation of catalysts has emerged to carry out this transformation with higher conversion and selectivity, and more importantly, under mild temperature and pressure conditions. These new catalysts typically involve the use of a highly porous supporting material such as zeolite, or more recently, metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) and graphene, and metallic nanoparticles or a combination of different types of nanoparticles that are the core of the catalytic process. In this review, recent advances in the porous supports for nanoparticles used for methane oxidation to methanol under mild conditions are discussed.
