Abstract:Photocatalysis emerged as a promising alternative to address fossil fuel scarcity and the limitations of other clean energy sources. Photocatalysis enables hydrogen production via water splitting, using photocatalysts and light irradiation, which can be stored and utilized across various applications. Photocatalysis has exhibited significant improvements and promising yields in hydrogen production, surpassing its initial stages. The current photocatalyst market offers diverse materials with unique characteristics, and continuous evolution is observed in their synthesis methods. This contribution aims to compile recent literature on advancements in photocatalysts for hydrogen production, with particular emphasis on photocatalyst type, hydrogen production performance and market trends.

Abstract:Climate concerns require immediate actions to reduce the global average temperature increase. Renewable electricity and renewable energy-based fuels and chemicals are crucial for progressive de-fossilization. Hydrogen will be part of the solution. The main issues to be considered are the growing market for H2 and the "green" feedstock and energy that should be used to produce H2. The electrolysis of water using surplus renewable energy is considered an important development. Alternative H2 production routes should be using "green" feedstock to replace fossil fuels. We firstly investigated these alternative routes through using bio-based methanol or ethanol or ammonia from digesting agro-industrial or domestic waste. The catalytic conversion of CH4 to C and H2 was examined as a possible option for decarbonizing the natural gas grid. Secondly, water splitting by reversible redox reactions was examined, but using a renewable energy supply was deemed necessary. The application of renewable heat or power was therefore investigated, with a special focus on using concentrated solar tower (CST) technology. We finally assessed valorization data to provide a tentative view of the scale-up potential and economic aspects of the systems and determine the needs for future research and developments.

Abstract:Fossil fuels play a powerful role in the global economy and are therefore referred to as strategic raw materials. However, their massive use around the world is associated with concerns about the sufficiency of energy sources for future generations. Currently, fossil fuel resources are heavily depleted, with limited supplies. According to forecasts, the demand for energy will constantly increase, so it is necessary to find a solution that reconciles the ever-increasing demand for energy with the need to protect the environment. The main solution to this problem is to acquire energy from renewable resources, especially in the direction of obtaining alternative substitutes for transportation fuels. One of the main alternative fuels that can replace existing fossil fuels is hydrogen. An efficient way to obtain this compound is through the use of modern photocatalysts. Hence, the purpose of this paper is to review the recent literature on the effective use of catalysts in photocatalytic processes (e.g., glycerol conversion) that enable the synthesis of hydrogen.

Abstract:To tackle the grand twin challenges of sustainable energy supply and climate change, Small Structures of the advanced catalysts can play a central role in not only promoting the energy conversion such as green hydrogen production and energy storage, but also mitigating green-house gas threats for value-added fuel conversion. Catalysis, one of the most active and diversified research fields, is pivotal to achieving the zero-emission target in the coming decades. The significant advancements have been witnessed in material design, experimental technology, and fundamental knowledge. To document the state-of-the-art of these advances, this Special Issue features 7 research articles and 8 reviews, covering a broad spectrum of the advanced catalysis for renewable energy conversion and storage: electrocatalysis, photocatalysis, photoelectrocatalysis, and thermal catalysis. Focusing on water splitting reactions for green hydrogen production, there are three review articles about the design of new catalysts including 2D metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) (Q Zhang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200109) and Ni-based MOFs (D H Taffa et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200263), and advances in in situ characterization platforms (J-F Li et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200201). Four research articles introduce new photocatalytic hydrogen processes based on mesoporous semiconductors (R Marschall et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200184) and 2D carbon nitride catalysts (L Wang et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200264), photoelectrochemical water oxidation using doped titania nanotubes (K Maeda et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200229), and porous carbon based electrocatalytic water splitting reactions (Y Yamauchi et al., DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200235). B-Y Xia et al. present their perspectives on water splitting at a larger scale, discussing the challenges and strategies for proton-exchange-membrane-based water electrolyzers (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200130). To mitigate the carbon dioxide impact on our environment, H Jang and co-workers review single-atom catalyst design for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200236), and R Xu et al. present a research article on the 2D covalent organic framework catalysts for CO2-to-CO conversion (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200233). J Scott's team focuses on the conversion of CO2 to valuable light olefins (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200285). Relating to the concept of catalytic process for value-added products, G Wu and co-workers present the electrochemical nitrate conversion to ammonia (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200202), whereas J Liang and co-workers provide a critical overview on the electrocatalytic ammonia oxidation reactions (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200266). In a research article, K Nakajima's team demonstrate their strategy to catalytic de-hydration of glucose to hydroxymethylfurfural (HMF) (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200224). By using the concept of synergistic catalysis, B-Q Li, Q Zhang, and co-workers investigate high-performing catalysts for an energy storage system of lithium-sulfur batteries (DOI: 10.1002/sstr.202200205). The guest editors do wish this special issue can shed light on the catalytic reaction mechanism and understanding of rational catalyst design in this fast-growing research field. We believe that the sustained research effort in rational Small Structure innovation would make big impact on sustainable energy supply and climate change.

Abstract:'Renewable energy is an essential part of our strategy of decarbonization, decentralization, as well as digitalization of energy.' – Isabelle Kocher. Current climate, health and economic condition of our globe demands the use of renewable energy and the development of novel materials for the efficient generation, storage and transportation of renewable energy. Hydrogen has been recognised as one of the most prominent carriers and green energy source with challenging storage, enabling decarbonization. Photocatalytic H 2 (green hydrogen) production processes are targeting the intensification of separated solar energy harvesting, storage and electrolysis, conventionally yielding O 2 /H 2 . While catalysis is being investigated extensively, little is done on bridging the gap, related to reactor unit design, optimisation and scaling, be it that of material or of operation. Herein, metals, oxides, perovskites, nitrides, carbides, sulphides, phosphides, 2D structures and heterojunctions are compared in terms of parameters, allowing for efficiency, thermodynamics or kinetics structure–activity relationships, such as the solar-to-hydrogen (STH). Moreover, prominent pilot systems are presented summarily.

Abstract:Abstract Photocatalytic hydrogen (H 2 ) production is a process that converts solar energy into chemical energy by means of a suitable photocatalyst. After the huge amount of systems that have been tested in the last forty years, the advent of nanotechnology and a careful design at molecular level, allow to obtain attractive activity, even using pure visible light. At the same time we are approaching reasonable photocatalyst stability in laboratory test, and the attention is paid to identify cost‐effective photocatalysts that might find real applications. This Review provides a broad overview of the elementary steps of the heterogeneous photocatalytic H 2 production, including an outline of the physico‐chemical reactions occurring on semiconductors and cocatalysts. The use of different renewable oxygenates as sustainable sacrificial agent for the H 2 production is outlined, in view of a transition from fossil fuels to pure water splitting. Finally, the recent advances in the development of photocatalyst are discussed focusing on the current progress in organic and hybrid organic/inorganic photocatalysts.

Abstract:Hydrogen, as an important clean energy source, plays a more and more crucial role in decarbonizing the planet and meeting the global climate challenge due to its high energy density and zero‐emission. The demand for sustainable hydrogen is increasing drastically worldwide as driven by the global shift towards low‐carbon energy solutions. Hierarchically structured catalysts and devices have gradually taken the center stage toward replacing the traditional counterparts, especially with the rapid advancing of the design and manufacture of such ordered nanostructure assemblies toward high activity, efficient mass transport, and superb stability. In this review, the latest progress of the hierarchically structured catalysts for hydrogen production have been surveyed on electro‐ and thermo‐ chemical pathways comparatively. It covers the structure designs of atomic dispersion, nanoscale surfaces and interfaces for achieving highly active and durable catalysts, components, and devices. Both electrochemical and thermochemical approaches are reviewed in terms of the vast design details, engineered benefits, and understandings of various Pt‐group metal (PGM) and non‐PGM based transition metal catalysts for hydrogen production. As the growing trend, brief discussions are also presented toward the high‐level assembly and manufacture of complexly structured components and devices at scale in the electrochemical and thermochemical energy systems.

Abstract:Hydrogen holds immense potential as a sustainable energy source as a result of its eco-friendliness and high energy density. Thus, hydrogen can solve the energy and environmental challenges. However, it is crucial to produce hydrogen using sustainable approaches in a cost-efficient manner. Currently, hydrogen can be produced by utilizing diverse feedstocks, such as natural gas, methane, ammonia, smaller organic molecules (methanol, ethanol, glycerol, and formic acid), biomass, and water. These feedstocks undergo conversion into hydrogen through different catalytic processes, including steam reforming, pyrolysis, catalytic decomposition, gasification, electrolysis, and photo-assisted methods (photoelectrochemical, photocatalysis, and biophotolysis). Researchers have extensively explored various catalysts, including metals, alloys, oxides, non-oxides, carbon-based materials, and metal–organic frameworks, for these catalytic methods. The primary objectives have been to attain higher activity, selectivity, stability, and cost effectiveness in hydrogen generation. The efficacy of these catalytic processes is significantly dependent upon the performance of the catalysts, emphasizing the need for further research and development to create more efficient catalysts. However, during catalytic hydrogen production, gases like CO2, O2, CO, N2, etc. are produced alongside hydrogen. Separation techniques, such as pressure swing adsorption, metal hydride separation, and membrane separation, are employed to obtain high-purity hydrogen. Furthermore, a techno-economic analysis indicates that catalytic hydrogen production through steam reforming of natural gas/methane is currently viable and commercially successful. Photovoltaic electrolysis has been commercialized, but the cost of hydrogen production is still higher. Meanwhile, other photo-assisted methods are in the development phase and hold the potential for future commercialization.

Abstract:The world's energy sector faces two major challenges: one is the rapid rise in the price of oil products, and the other is the increase in the amount of carbon dioxide emitted by industry into the atmosphere, leading to global warming. Developments in alternative energy sources, such as solar and hydrogen energy, are becoming increasingly relevant. In this regard, there has been a lot of interest in converting CO 2 into useful products. Hydrogenation of carbon dioxide into useful energy resources and chemicals is becoming increasingly important as it is seen as a promising way to reclaim harmful CO 2 as a by-product. The article considers modern technologies of hydrogen production and industrial conversion of carbon dioxide into useful products, and also describes the author's natural method of catalytic conversion of carbon dioxide into useful green energy resources – hydrogen and hydrocarbons.

Abstract:Due to its characteristics, hydrogen is considered the energy carrier of the future. Its use as a fuel generates reduced pollution, as if burned it almost exclusively produces water vapor. Hydrogen can be produced from numerous sources, both of fossil and renewable origin, and with as many production processes, which can use renewable or non-renewable energy sources. To achieve carbon neutrality, the sources must necessarily be renewable, and the production processes themselves must use renewable energy sources. In this review article the main characteristics of the most used hydrogen production methods are summarized, mainly focusing on renewable feedstocks, furthermore a series of relevant articles published in the last year, are reviewed. The production methods are grouped according to the type of energy they use; and at the end of each section the strengths and limitations of the processes are highlighted. The conclusions compare the main characteristics of the production processes studied and contextualize their possible use.

Abstract:As a consequence of the issues resulting from global climate change many nations are starting to transition to being low or net zero carbon economies. To achieve this objective practical alternative fuels are urgently required and hydrogen gas is deemed one of the most desirable substitute fuels to traditional hydrocarbons. A significant challenge, however, is obtaining hydrogen from sources with low or zero carbon footprint i.e. so called "green" hydrogen. Consequently, there are a number of strands of research into processes that are practical techniques for the production of this "green" hydrogen. Over the past five decades there has been a significant body of research into photocatalytic/photoelectrocatalytic processes for hydrogen production through water splitting or water reduction. There have, however been significant issues faced in terms of the practical capability of this promising technology to produce hydrogen at scale. This road map article explores a range of issues related to both photocatalytic and photoelectrocatalytic hydrogen generation ranging from basic processes, materials science through to reactor engineering and applications for biomass reforming.

Abstract:Indubitably, hydrogen demonstrates sterling properties as an energy carrier and is widely anticipated as the future resource for fuels and chemicals. Herein, an updated assessment of progress recorded on the production, transportation, utilization, and storage of hydrogen is examined. Firstly, the numerous routes for the production of hydrogen from renewable and non-renewable sources are systematically demystified. Subsequently, the transportation framework for hydrogen is discussed. Moreover, the industrial application of hydrogen is elucidated and the existing hydrogen storage systems are chronologically analyzed. From the review of the literature, photocatalytic water splitting technology is the most environmentally benign method available for H 2 production. Additionally, underground hydrogen storage in a geologic porous medium offers the largest and most affordable storage capacity for H 2 gas. Nonetheless, the compatibility of H 2 with reservoir fluid in porous media and other safety concerns has to be adequately understood to avoid preventable losses. Finally, the key research gaps were highlighted and potential areas for future research are proffered.

Abstract:Hydrogen represents a renewable energy alternative that may positively contribute to get over the global energy crisis by at the same time reducing the environmental burden. This challenging perspective could be improved by taking advantage of the different sources that might provide hydrogen. Photocatalytic generation of hydrogen, although a minor alternative, appears a very good option at the time that liquid wastes are being upgraded; therefore, this approach has given rise to an increasing number of interesting studies.Here, we aim to provide an integrated overview of the different photocatalytic, heterogeneous, homogeneous and hybrid systems. First, we categorize the units and mechanisms that take part in the photocatalytic process; we analyze their role and draw comparative conclusions. Thus, we analyze the role of i) the electron source to carry out proton reduction, ii) the proton source, which can be free protons in the medium or a proton donor compound, iii) the catalyst nature and concentration and, iv) the photosensitizer nature and concentration. We also provide the analysis of the influence of the solvent, especially in homogenous systems as well as the influence of pH. We provide the comparison of the photocatalytic performance, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages, of different systems. Thus, this review on the one hand is an update of the state of the art of photocatalytic generation of hydrogen from a full perspective that integrates homogeneous, heterogeneous and hybrid systems and, on the other hand, it provides useful information for future research.This article is protected by copyright. Abstract:This review examines the central role of hydrogen, particularly green hydrogen from renewable sources, in the global search for energy solutions that are sustainable and safe by design. Using the hydrogen square, safety measures across the hydrogen value chain—production, storage, transport, and utilisation—are discussed, thereby highlighting the need for a balanced approach to ensure a sustainable and efficient hydrogen economy. The review also underlines the challenges in safety assessments, points to past incidents, and argues for a comprehensive risk assessment that uses empirical modelling, simulation-based computational fluid dynamics (CFDs) for hydrogen dispersion, and quantitative risk assessments. It also highlights the activities carried out by our research group SaRAH (Safety, Risk Analysis, and Hydrogen) relative to a more rigorous risk assessment of hydrogen-related systems through the use of a combined approach of CFD simulations and the appropriate risk assessment tools. Our research activities are currently focused on underground hydrogen storage and hydrogen transport as hythane.
