Abstract:Hydrogen is gaining momentum in the current global energy transition framework. In fact a great and widespread enthusiasm is growing up towards it, as indicated by the current worldwide economic and political strategies, which endorse the carbon neutrality by 2030 and a fast transition to clean energy. Green hydrogen has the potential to create a virtuous cycle for the future renewables-based electricity grids, as it can provide the much-needed flexibility to power systems, acting as a buffer to non-dispatchable renewable generation. Indeed, the excess energy, provided by conventional and renewable power plants, can be stored as hydrogen and then employed to produce electricity (fuel cells or power systems), heat (combustion) or both (co-generation), abating drastically the greenhouse gas production. In this scenario, it is important to understand what benefits could derive from the use of hydrogen. For this reason, the present work not only aims at reviewing the recent updates on hydrogen economy (in terms of the main advantages and drawbacks) but also focuses on determining the impact that this hydrogen may have in various sectors (transport, industry and power generation). Different assessments have been carried out showing how hydrogen can effectively contribute to the carbon neutrality goal. This work points out that hydrogen can be really sustainable if produced via electrolysis powered by renewable energies. Furthermore, for the mobility, the use of fuel cells currently turns out to be less efficient than the adoption of Li-ion batteries, but at the same time far less polluting ( CO 2 , eq ) and labor intensive. Finally, a near-term solution to contrast the power generation carbon footprint, namely the blending of fossil fuels with hydrogen, has been investigated. Thus, a real Combined Cycle Gas Turbine power plant has been selected as a case study, in order to assess the impact of the hydrogen employment in terms of power output and emissions with respect to the current status of the plant fueled with 100% natural gas. As a result, using a mixture with 70% CH 4 and 30% H 2 a remarkable reduction of CO 2 can be achieved (0.28 Mt CO 2 / year ).

Abstract:The unbridled use of fossil fuels is a serious problem that has become increasingly evident over the years. As such fuels contribute considerably to environmental pollution, there is a need to find new, sustainable sources of energy with low emissions of greenhouse gases. Climate change poses a substantial challenge for the scientific community. Thus, the use of renewable energy through technologies that offer maximum efficiency with minimal pollution and carbon emissions has become a major goal. Technology related to the use of hydrogen as a fuel is one of the most promising solutions for future systems of clean energy. The aim of the present review was to provide an overview of elements related to the potential use of hydrogen as an alternative energy source, considering its specific chemical and physical characteristics as well as prospects for an increase in the participation of hydrogen fuel in the world energy matrix.

Abstract:Indubitably, hydrogen demonstrates sterling properties as an energy carrier and is widely anticipated as the future resource for fuels and chemicals. Herein, an updated assessment of progress recorded on the production, transportation, utilization, and storage of hydrogen is examined. Firstly, the numerous routes for the production of hydrogen from renewable and non-renewable sources are systematically demystified. Subsequently, the transportation framework for hydrogen is discussed. Moreover, the industrial application of hydrogen is elucidated and the existing hydrogen storage systems are chronologically analyzed. From the review of the literature, photocatalytic water splitting technology is the most environmentally benign method available for H 2 production. Additionally, underground hydrogen storage in a geologic porous medium offers the largest and most affordable storage capacity for H 2 gas. Nonetheless, the compatibility of H 2 with reservoir fluid in porous media and other safety concerns has to be adequately understood to avoid preventable losses. Finally, the key research gaps were highlighted and potential areas for future research are proffered.

Abstract:Today, the generation of carbon-neutral hydrogen from renewable energy can be considered a significant achievement toward a circular bioeconomy in this industry. In contrast, carbon production is rising globally, with energy-related carbon emissions accounting for two-thirds of global emissions. Now, an energy factor is required to mitigate the correlation between economic growth and rising carbon emissions. This is where green hydrogen generation can enter the renewable energy equation. Hydrogen can contribute to reducing gas emissions in the coming decades, not only as a potential technology for the future but also as a successful technology already being implemented globally. This review aims to contribute to reducing greenhouse gas emissions, including carbon, by examining the possible pathways to a hydrogen-capable clean energy future. To this end, this article has challenged a deeper perspective on the relationship between hydrogen as a green fuel and renewable energy, as well as the economics of hydrogen supply considering the steadily declining costs of renewables and the role of hydrogen in energy transport as well as provides strategic considerations and applications.

Abstract:With the rapid and sustainable development of economy and society, the problem of energy supply has been gradually highlighted. Hydrogen energy is considered as the most developed clean energy in the global energy transition. Abstract:The use of molecular hydrogen (H 2 ) in the energy sector faces several technical and economic hurdles related to its chemical and physical properties, particularly volumetric energy density and mass. The production, transport and storage of hydrogen, both in gas and liquid form, are intrinsically inefficient and expensive. Moreover, the mass production of green hydrogen would preferably use surpluses of renewable electricity that will be largely available not before the next decade. To fulfill the great potential of H 2 in the decarbonization of the global economy – which should greatly accelerate – applications must be carefully selected, favoring for instance hard-to-abate sectors with respect to low-temperature residential heating or long-distance transportation versus light duty vehicles. In the meantime, research on production, transportation and storage of H 2 must substantially leap forward.

Abstract:The global economic growth, the increase in the population, and advances in technology lead to an increment in the global primary energy demand. Considering that most of this energy is currently supplied by fossil fuels, a considerable amount of greenhouse gases are emitted, contributing to climate change, which is the reason why the next European Union binding agreement is focused on reducing carbon emissions using hydrogen. This study reviews different technologies for hydrogen production using renewable and non-renewable resources. Furthermore, a comparative analysis is performed on renewable-based technologies to evaluate which technologies are economically and energetically more promising. The results show how biomass-based technologies allow for a similar hydrogen yield compared to those obtained with water-based technologies but with higher energy efficiencies and lower operational costs. More specifically, biomass gasification and steam reforming obtained a proper balance between the studied parameters, with gasification being the technique that allows for higher hydrogen yields, while steam reforming is more energy-efficient. Nevertheless, the application of hydrogen as the energy vector of the future requires both the use of renewable feedstocks with a sustainable energy source. This combination would potentially produce green hydrogen while reducing carbon dioxide emissions, limiting global climate change, and, thus, achieving the so-called hydrogen economy.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:This paper highlights the emergence of green hydrogen as an eco-friendly and renewable energy carrier, offering a promising opportunity for an energy transition toward a more responsible future. Green hydrogen is generated using electricity sourced from renewable sources, minimizing CO 2 emissions during its production process. Its advantages include reducing carbon emissions, energy storage, and its diversity of applications in different sectors. However, challenges remain, particularly in terms of production cost, infrastructure, logistics, research, and development. Despite this, green hydrogen has enormous potential to help fight climate change and promote more resilient energy systems, but its widespread adoption will require global cooperation to overcome these challenges. This review presents a comprehensive examination of green hydrogen, covering multiple aspects, including production methods, infrastructure, advantages, disadvantages, and challenges. It provides an in-depth examination of the current state of hydrogen infrastructure, emphasizing the transition from restricted-access stations to customer-friendly retail stations. Moreover, it explores the complex interplay between hydrogen production, storage, and transportation, addressing issues like energy density and infrastructure demands. The paper also emphasizes the crucial significance of research and development in improving green hydrogen production and utilization, considering advanced materials, safety, and life cycle assessment.

Abstract:In recent years, global efforts towards a future with sustainable energy have intensified the development of renewable energy sources (RESs) such as offshore wind, solar photovoltaics (PVs), hydro, and geothermal. Concurrently, green hydrogen, produced via water electrolysis using these RESs, has been recognized as a promising solution to decarbonizing traditionally hard-to-abate sectors. Furthermore, hydrogen storage provides a long-duration energy storage approach to managing the intermittency of RESs, which ensures a reliable and stable electricity supply and supports electric grid operations with ancillary services like frequency and voltage regulation. Despite significant progress, the hydrogen economy remains nascent, with ongoing developments and persistent uncertainties in economic, technological, and regulatory aspects. This paper provides a comprehensive review of the green hydrogen value chain, encompassing production, transportation logistics, storage methodologies, and end-use applications, while identifying key research gaps. Particular emphasis is placed on the integration of green hydrogen into both grid-connected and islanded systems, with a focus on operational strategies to enhance grid resilience and efficiency over both the long and short terms. Moreover, this paper draws on global case studies from pioneering green hydrogen projects to inform strategies that can accelerate the adoption and large-scale deployment of green hydrogen technologies across diverse sectors and geographies.

Abstract:<p>The energy transition is not something that awaits us in the next decade. On the contrary, it is a process in which we are already deeply enrolled. The main step towards the creation of a carbon-neutral society is the implementation of renewable energy sources (RES) as replacements for fossil fuels. Given the intermittency of RES, energy storage has an essential role to play in this transition. Hydrogen technology with its many advances was recognized to be the most promising choice. As multiple hydrogen applications were researched relatively recently, the current development of its technology is not yet on the large-scale implementation level. With the increasing number of studies and initiated projects, the utilization of hydrogen's immense ecological potential is to be expected in the next few decades. New innovative solutions of hydrogen technology that includes hydrogen production, storage, distribution, and usage, are permeating all industry sectors. In a rapidly changing world, technological advances bring forth public discussions, that are a deciding factor whether society will be able to adapt and accept those new contributions or reject them. Currently, hydrogen is the best associated with fuel cell electric vehicles which emit only water vapour and warm air, producing no harmful tailpipe emissions. As various scientists are stressing the gravity of climate change effects that are reaching the physical environment, ecosystems, and humanity in general, concern for the future is becoming the main global topic. Consequently, governments are implementing new sustainable policies that promote RES as a substitute for fossil fuels. Increasing progress in hydrogen technology instigated nations worldwide to incorporate hydrogen in their energy legislations and national development plans, which resulted in numerous national hydrogen strategies. This work shows the progress of hydrogen taking its place as a key factor of the future green energy society. It reviews recent developments of hydrogen technologies, their social, industrial, and environmental standing, as well as the stage of transitioning economies of both advanced and beginner countries. An example of the ongoing energy transition is Croatia, which is in the process of implementing a hydrogen strategy with the ambition to be able to one day equally participates in the rapidly emerging hydrogen market.</p>

Abstract:As a clean energy source, hydrogen not only helps to reduce the use of fossil fuels but also promotes the transformation of energy structure and sustainable development. This paper firstly introduces the development status of green hydrogen at home and abroad and then focuses on several advanced green hydrogen production technologies. Then, the advantages and shortcomings of different green hydrogen production technologies are compared. Among them, the future source of hydrogen tends to be electrolysis water hydrogen production. Finally, the challenges and application prospects of the development process of green hydrogen technology are discussed, and green hydrogen is expected to become an important part of realizing sustainable global energy development.

Abstract:In today's world, the major source of energy is fossil fuels, which are nonrenewable and cannot be used once exhausted. At the start of the twenty-first century, main challenges with current energy infrastructure throughout the world were a finite supply of fossil fuels, ever-increasing energy use, and the growing environmental impact of greenhouse gas emissions. Fossil fuel energy is economical due to existing infrastructure, but it has significant downsides and has a severe impact on the environment. As a result, renewable energy sources are being investigated as potential contenders to supply the bulk of energy demands. Hydrogen is the least harmful to the environment of these fuels. Hydrogen is a clean, long-lasting fuel with the potential that is the source of future global energy. It may potentially be used to replace current fossil-fuel-based energy infrastructure. This is seen as a solution to the above-mentioned challenges, such as global warming and environmental degradation. It is impossible to overestimate the relevance of environmental and economic factors in the development of hydrogen infrastructure. This article discusses the many aspects of hydrogen, including as manufacturing, storage, and applications, with a focus on the environment and the economy.

Abstract:Nations are making substantial changes to the worldwide energy situation to address climate change, decrease the release of greenhouse gases, and shift towards sustainable energy systems. Hydrogen is gaining prominence as a prominent candidate among alternative energy sources owing to its versatility and ecological advantages. Incorporating this technology into the existing electricity grid presents opportunities and obstacles, notably in infrastructure and economic viability. Hydrogen may be generated from several sources, such as natural gas, biomass, and water, using methods like steam methane reforming (SMR) and electrolysis. This paper investigates the economic analysis of integrating steam methane reforming (SMR) technology with electrolysis and carbon capture. The study utilizes Elsevier Scopus and Web of Science data to uncover substantial research activity, revealing that North America and Europe, emerge as the leading contributors with 1263 and 756 citations in the research domain, respectively, while highlighting the lack of African contributions to the cited documents. The results underscore the need to incorporate cost-efficient CO 2 collection into SMR operations to generate "blue hydrogen" and the possibility of obtaining green hydrogen from renewable sources. Technological progress and favorable legislation are essential for lowering production expenses and improving the feasibility of hydrogen as a sustainable energy transporter. This study highlights the need for worldwide cooperation and financial support in hydrogen technologies to accomplish a future with reduced carbon emissions. This study offers an extensive economic assessment of integrating SMR with electrolysis and CO 2 capture. It emphasizes technological developments, cost considerations, and the possibility of international cooperation to enhance hydrogen production and aid in mitigating climate change.

Abstract:<p>The global energy transition towards a carbon neutral society requires a profound transformation of electricity generation and consumption, as well as of electric power systems. Hydrogen has an important potential to accelerate the process of scaling up clean and renewable energy, however its integration in power systems remains little studied. This paper reviews the current progress and outlook of hydrogen technologies and their application in power systems for hydrogen production, re-electrification and storage. The characteristics of electrolysers and fuel cells are demonstrated with experimental data and the deployments of hydrogen for energy storage, power-to-gas, co- and tri-generation and transportation are investigated using examples from worldwide projects. The current techno-economic status of these technologies and applications is presented, in which cost, efficiency and durability are identified as the main critical aspects. This is also confirmed by the results of a statistical analysis of the literature. Finally, conclusions show that continuous efforts on performance improvements, scale ramp-up, technical prospects and political support are required to enable a cost-competitive hydrogen economy.</p>

Abstract:There is a growing interest in green hydrogen, with researchers, institutions, and countries focusing on its development, efficiency improvement, and cost reduction. This paper explores the concept of green hydrogen and its production process using renewable energy sources in several leading countries, including Australia, the European Union, India, Canada, China, Russia, the United States, South Korea, South Africa, Japan, and other nations in North Africa. These regions possess significant potential for "green" hydrogen production, supporting the transition from fossil fuels to clean energy and promoting environmental sustainability through the electrolysis process, a common method of production. The paper also examines the benefits of green hydrogen as a future alternative to fossil fuels, highlighting its superior environmental properties with zero net greenhouse gas emissions. Moreover, it explores the potential advantages of green hydrogen utilization across various industrial, commercial, and transportation sectors. The research suggests that green hydrogen can be the fuel of the future when applied correctly in suitable applications, with improvements in production and storage techniques, as well as enhanced efficiency across multiple domains. Optimization strategies can be employed to maximize efficiency, minimize costs, and reduce environmental impact in the design and operation of green hydrogen production systems. International cooperation and collaborative efforts are crucial for the development of this technology and the realization of its full benefits.

Abstract:The worldwide economic development, population expansion, and technological advancements contribute to a rise in global primary energy consumption. Since fossil fuels now provide around 85% of the energy requirement, a significant quantity of greenhouse gases is released, leading to climate change. To meet the pledges of the Paris agreement, a promising and potential alternative to fossil fuels needs to be commercialised. Therefore, numerous industries recognise hydrogen (H 2 ) as a clean and stable energy source for decarbonisation or de-fossilisation. Around 90% of the world's H 2 produced is grey in nature and produced from reforming fossil-based fuels. However, the future of H 2 energy lies in its green, blue, and turquoise spectra due to the carbon capture scheme and corresponding clean and sustainable H 2 production methodology. The fundamental goal of this research is to learn more about various low-carbon H 2 generating systems. In comparison to fossil-based H 2 , green H 2 is a costly option. Blue H 2 offers several appealing characteristics; however, the carbon capture utilisation and storage (CCUS) technology are expensive and blue H 2 is not carbon-free. The current CCUS technology can only store and catch between 80 and 95% of CO 2 . Further, it examines worldwide actions related to the H 2 development policy. In addition, a debate based on the colour spectrum of H 2 was established to classify the purity of H 2 generation. Further, the existing obstacles, advancements, and future directions of low-carbon H 2 production technologies, including fossil fuel-based and renewable-based H 2 , are explored to foster the growth of the low-carbon H 2 economy.

Abstract:There is growing societal consensus that hydrogen is an absolutely necessary part of energy portfolio to reach the COP26 goal to secure global net-zero by mid-century. Hydrogen will play a major role in hard to decarbonize sectors such as industrial (production of steel, cement, and chemicals including ammonia) and heavy-duty, long-haul transportation. By different estimations, hydrogen production volume will be anywhere from 240 to 800 million metric tons per year (MMTY). More realistic predictions are in the range 500 – 600 MMTY that is 7 – 8.5 times more than current global hydrogen production, which predominantly uses fossil fuels and emits around 830 MMTY of carbon dioxide. It is assumed that hydrogen produced by water splitting became predominant by 2050. With less than 0.1% of current global hydrogen production delivered from water electrolysis, electrolytic hydrogen has tremendous potential for growth. Two commercial (alkaline and PEM) and two emerging (SOEC and AEM) will be compared based on current status and trends of technology (catalysts, membranes, system manufacturability, and capital cost). These technologies could benefit from the integration with energy sources (e.g., nuclear power) or downstream utilization (e.g., ammonia production). Suitability of these technologies for exemplary environments with different energy inputs, electricity prices, and capacity factors will be analyzed. In addition, the effect of different pathways for hydrogen delivery (pure and in the form of a hydrogen carrier) on the levelized cost of hydrogen will be considered. Development of advanced green hydrogen technologies including early stage research will be illustrated with projects funded by DOE Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA-E) and Hydrogen and Fuel Cell technologies Office (HFTO), and their role in DOE Hydrogen Program and Hydrogen Earthshot will be discussed.

Abstract:Hydrogen is considered as a promising fuel in the 21st century due to zero tailpipe CO 2 emissions from hydrogen-powered vehicles. The use of hydrogen as fuel in vehicles can play an important role in decarbonising the transport sector and achieving net-zero emissions targets. However, there exist several issues related to hydrogen production, efficient hydrogen storage system and transport and refuelling infrastructure, where the current research is focussing on. This study critically reviews and analyses the recent technological advancements of hydrogen production, storage and distribution technologies along with their cost and associated greenhouse gas emissions. This paper also comprehensively discusses the hydrogen refuelling methods, identifies issues associated with fast refuelling and explores the control strategies. Additionally, it explains various standard protocols in relation to safe and efficient refuelling, analyses economic aspects and presents the recent technological advancements related to refuelling infrastructure. This study suggests that the production cost of hydrogen significantly varies from one technology to others. The current hydrogen production cost from fossil sources using the most established technologies were estimated at about 3.5/kg H 2 , depending on the country of production. The underground storage technology exhibited the lowest storage cost, followed by compressed hydrogen and liquid hydrogen storage. The levelised cost of the refuelling station was reported to be about 8/kg H 2 , depending on the station's capacity and country. Using portable refuelling stations were identified as a promising option in many countries for small fleet size low-to-medium duty vehicles. Following the current research progresses, this paper in the end identifies knowledge gaps and thereby presents future research directions.

Abstract:Hydrogen (H2) is considered a suitable substitute for conventional energy sources because it is abundant and environmentally friendly. However, the widespread adoption of H2 as an energy source poses several challenges in H2 production, storage, safety, and transportation. Recent efforts to address these challenges have focused on improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of H2 production methods, developing advanced storage technologies to ensure safe handling and transportation of H2, and implementing comprehensive safety protocols. Furthermore, efforts are being made to integrate H2 into the existing energy infrastructure and explore new opportunities for its application in various sectors such as transportation, industry, and residential applications. Overall, recent developments in H2 production, storage, safety, and transportation have opened new avenues for the widespread adoption of H2 as a clean and sustainable energy source. This review highlights potential solutions to overcome the challenges associated with H2 production, storage, safety, and transportation. Additionally, it discusses opportunities to achieve a carbon-neutral society and reduce the dependence on fossil fuels.
