Abstract:This paper discussed the technical process of mechanical alloying-spark plasma sintering-hot isostatic pressing (MA-SPS-HIP) to fabricate vanadium alloy V-4Cr-4Ti-1.8YH(2), and the properties of the alloy after annealing treatment at 1000 similar to 4200 degrees C were tested. The XRD and SEM analyses show that it can reach the purpose of mechanical alloying after 50 h milling. The tensile test shows that V-4Cr-4Ti-1.8YH(2) alloy has a better mechanical property which can reach the optimum when the annealing temperature is 1100 degrees C. Microstructure analysis shows that the grain size of the vanadium alloy is mostly below 0.5 mu m, and YH2 transforms into Y2O3 during sintering process which are less than 50 nm particles distributing in the matrix.

Abstract:Alloys of titanium with refractory metals are attractive materials for applications requiring high temperature strength and corrosion resistance. However, the widely different characteristics of the component elements have made it difficult to produce sound, compositionally homogeneous ingots using traditional melting techniques. This is particularly critical because the compositional ranges spanned by the micro- and macrosegregation in theses systems can easily encompass a number of microconstituents which are detrimental to mechanical properties. This paper presents the results of a study of plasma (PAM) and vacuum-arc (VAR) melting of a 60 wt% tantalum, 40 wt% titanium binary alloy. The structural and compositional homogeneity of PAM consolidated +PAM remelted, and PAM consolidated +VAR remelted ingots were characterized and compared using optical and electron microscopy and x-ray fluorescence microanalysis. Additionally, the effect of melting parameter, including melt rate and magnetic stirring, was studied. The results indicated the PAM remelting achieves more complete dissolution of the starting electrode, due to greater local superheat, than does VAR remelting. PAM remelting also produces a finer as solidified grain structure, due to the smaller molten pool and lower local solidification times. Conversely, VAR remelting produces an ingot with a more uniform macrostructure, due to the more stable movementmore » of the solidification interface and more uniform material feed rate. Based on these results, a three-step process of PAM consolidation, followed by a PAM intermediate melt and a VAR final melt, has been selected for further development of the alloy and processing sequence.« less

Abstract:The parameters and factors that influence the surface quality and macrostructure of titanium alloy with reactive properties under liquid state were studied experimentally using a cold crucible electromagnetic casting method. The variations in the process parameters have great impact on the surface quality and macrostructure of cast billets. Billets with crack free and smooth surfaces as well as directional solidified primary structures were obtained after the selection of optimized process parameters. The formation mechanisms of defects such as cracks and non-directional structural morphology were interpreted briefly. Finally, the casting of billets with good outer qualities and inner column grains has been attained successfully, which in turn gives a solid foundation for further development of the technology.

Abstract:Production of casting titanium alloys has been increased due to a significantly high competitive price rather than processed products (e.g. forging, extrusion and rolling). Therefore, advanced casting skills have been developed to manufacture titanium alloys with high quality. However, as-cast titanium alloys have a limit to improve their properties because of lower mechanical properties than forged alloys. In this study, Ti-6Al-4V alloy was fabricated by vacuum arc re-melting (VAR); it is a commercial casting's method. Heat treatment is useful method for improving mechanical properties of the casting parts through microstructure's evolution. The main aim of this work is to study relationship between heat treatment, microstructure and mechanical properties have been investigated. Solution treatment was performed at 950℃ for 0.5h followed by water quenching. After that, the samples were aged at 450, 550 and 650℃. Hardness and tensile tests (at RT and high temperature) were conducted. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) were used to observe the microstructure as well. The hardness slightly increased with increasing aging time. In addition, tensile properties at high temperature (400℃) by aging treatment were improved.

Abstract:The investment technologies of preparing wax moulds, mould shells and technology of centrifugal casting for titanium alloys were studied. Low priced refractory and binder materials were used in the process of preparing shell moulds, the parameters of preparing wax moulds, mould shells were optimized, and the titanium components were cast successfully using low priced shell mould materials by the centrifugal technology, in which the preheat temperature of the mould was 300 degreesC and the centrifugal speed was 280 r/min. The surface and inside qualities of castings were tested. The results show that the diffusing thickness of aluminum is 60 mum, and that of silicon is 20 mum.

Abstract:To improve the metallurgical quality of titanium alloy and to recycle its scraps,the electron beam cold hearth remelting technology instead of vacuum arc remelting technology,is used more and more widely in the titanium industry.The process principle and characteristics of the electron beam cold hearth remelting technology,the research development of the removal of hard α inclusion and the control of Al evaporation,are reviewed in the article.Finally,the present state of the electron beam cold hearth remelting technology in China is introduced.
Investigation On Low Cost Investment Technology Of Titanium Alloys

Abstract:The low cost investment casting technology of titanium alloys was studied. Low-cost materials were used in the process of preparing shell moulds. Two sizes powder refractories (about circle divide 40-50mum circle divide 10mum) were size-graded in order to find out the best proportioning, and the viscosities of theirs were test to validate the best proportioning. The coefficients of thermal expansion of the mould shells were measured, effects of baking time on residual strength of face-layers of shell molds were measured and SEM photographs of shell molds ruptures were observed, thus the parameters of baking were determined. Some casts pouring experiments were conducted, the results show the high quality, cost effective titanium casting can be cast by the centrifugal casting technology of 280r/min of centrifugal speed and 573K of preheat temperature of the molds.

Abstract:A novel technique for preparing in-situ Al-TiB2 and Al-Al3Ti composites by electroslag remelting (ESR) process was developed in this paper. The microstructure and phases of the composites were investigated by SEM and XRD. The aim of present work was to verify the feasibility of in-situ synthesis of Al-TiB2 and Al-Al3Ti composites by ESR process which had unique advantages in promoting fluoride salt-metal reaction efficiency. The reactant concentration and reactant contact area was improved greatly in the metal molten pool during ESR process leading to a totally complete reaction. The experiment results demonstrate that TiB2 and Al3Ti particulates disperse uniformly in the aluminum matrix and the mean particle size becomes much smaller compared with the conventional casting method.

Abstract:Plenty of papers with regard to the processing of TiAl alloys via investment casting, forging, rolling, extrusion pressing as well as mechanical machining have been published, whereas the manufacturing of gamma-TiAl based alloys and corresponding semi-finished products has not been entirely described so far. The aim of this paper is to review and evaluate the present technologies of TiAl alloy production on an industrial scale. Metallurgical alloying techniques such as vacuum arc remelting (VAR), plasma arc melting (PAM) and electron beam melting (EBM) are being shortly described and evaluated with regard to their advantages and disadvantages from both technical and economical point of view. Particular focus is set on some specifics in metallurgical processing of TiAl alloys compared to Ti and Ti alloys. Outstanding requests on the accuracy of chemical composition, microstructural homogeneity, acceptable local deviations of alloying elements, small sizes of the products, and, additionally, the very limited wrought processing capability of TiAl alloys require a set of adjusted metallurgical technologies for the manufacturing of semi-finished products. With this regard, the production of small sized semi-finished parts via skull melting technologies and subsequent centrifugal casting in permanent moulds have been successfully developed and industrialized. Both, VAR skull melting (VAR SM) for ingot conversion and induction skull melting (ISM) for the conversion of valuable revert materials result in technically indistinguishable products due to the application of a consistent centrifugal casting technology. Both procedures offer the highest flexibility on product shapes and dimensions for minimizing the specific materials usage, which has a direct positive influence on final component costs. Resulting materials properties of the semi-finished products meet entirely the different (customer related) specification requirements. There are basically no technical limitations with regard to TiAl alloy compositions as it is the case for TiAl alloy manufacturing via other technologies.

Abstract:The metallurgical defects,such as high density inclusion and low density inclusion,always appear in the titanium alloys,which are the fatigue crack sources in the titanium components and lower the application life of the components.This kind of defects can cause disaster in the aero-engine usage.The traditional triple vacuum arc melting process can not eliminate the high density inclusions and the low density inclusions in the raw materials.To produce the premium quality and high clean aero-engine used titanium alloys,in the last century 80’,the cold hearth melting technology was introduced in the world.This article describes the typical metallurgical defects in the titanium alloys,the melting principle of the cold hearth melting technology,the application and the development of the cold hearth melting technology.

Abstract:Due to the rapid heating-cooling process and unstable keyhole, pore defects are easily formed during the high energy beam-powder additive manufacturing (AM) process, posing great challenges to the high-performance manufacturing of aerospace components. Using an arc with lower energy density as a heat source can effectively avoid these defects, but its matching raw materials are limited to wire. In this paper, a novel magnetic field assisted powder arc additive manufacturing (MFA-PAAM) method has been proposed, which combines arc heat source and powder raw material to achieve dense metal parts. A transverse magnetic field (TMF) was introduced to solve the powder spattering problem which impacts the stability of the PAAM process, by regulating the direction of the arc plasma flow and the arc pressure. The unique melting behavior of the powder under arc heating was captured by a high-speed camera, which can be summarized into two steps: balling and adsorption by the molten pool. And the well-formed and fully dense Ti60 high-temperature titanium alloy wall components were successfully manufactured using the self-developed equipment. The microstructure of the thin-wall component is dominated by basket-weave distributed α laths and few β sheets remaining at their boundaries. A layered periodic distribution along the building direction was observed, which is mainly distinguished from the content and morphology of the β phase. The average ultimate tensile strength (UTS) and elongation to failure in the travelling direction are 1003.2 MPa and 15.1%, while the average UTS and elongation along the building direction are 1009.3 MPa and 16.6%, respectively. The fracture morphologies in both directions are characterized by ductile fracture. The MFA-PAAM technique shows great potential for fabricating materials that are difficult to be drawn into wires with high efficiency and performance.

Abstract:The technique of melting and casting rare earth giant magnetostrictive bars was investigated with super high temperature gradient directional solidification equipment developed by the authors. A number of φ7×120-mm bars with a smooth appearance were manufactured successfully; bars with different dimensions can be obtained by changing the molds. The results reveal that the fabrication process is available and simple. Under normal melting, the losses of Tb and Dy can be controlled to within 1 and 3%, respectively. The mean composition errors of the rare earth elements Tb and Dy are less than 1.5%. Metallographic examinations reveal that the microstructure is notably dependent on the mold temperature. In addition, the full process from melting and casting to directional solidification can be performed in the same equipment, and investment in facilities for melting and casting is not required.

Abstract:Vacuum arc remelting (VAR) is an ultra-high temperature and opaque process. It is difficult to conduct experimental research on the melt flow behavior and the formation of macrosegregation in this process. This work develops a two-dimensional Eulerian three-phase model to predict the solidification structure and macrosegregation of industrial Ti2AlNb ingots under complex multi-physics mechanism. The model is also used to study the influence of stirring magnetic field on the melt flow behaviors and macrosegregation of VAR ingots. The results show that Al content of the columnar zone increases gradually from the outside to the inside due to the flow behavior of the melt and the sedimentation of equiaxed grains. External magnetic field applied to stabilize the arc also makes significant effects on the melt convection and macrosegregation. Stirring Lorentz force induced by the external magnetic field drives the melt flow to rotate as a centrifugal force in the top, while drives the melt to flow downward along the metal pool and reduces the influence of the self-induced Lorentz force in the bottom. Superimposing the proper stirring magnetic field on the self-induced magnetic field can strengthen the solute mixing in the molten pool and improve the overall macrosegregation degree of the ingot. Increasing the stirring magnetic field can improve negative segregation in the center of the ingot but intensify the positive segregation in the periphery of the ingot.

Abstract:Titanium alloy has excellent characteristics that cannot be compared with other metals such as light specific gravity, high specific strength, wide applicable temperature range, corrosion resistance, and hydrogen storage. The traditional titanium alloy smelting process is mainly based on titanium sponge as raw material, which has a long process, high energy consumption, heavy pollution, and other problems, which seriously restricts the sustainable development of titanium alloy in the world. The common methods of preparing titanium alloy are alloy melting, metal thermal reduction, powder metallurgy, and the gradually emerging molten salt electrolysis. Among them, molten salt electrolysis is recognized as the most promising method to replace the traditional titanium alloy production process, and certain achievements have been made in recent years in terms of both process and basic theory research. In this paper, the common processes of titanium alloy preparation by molten salt electrolysis at home and abroad, such as molten salt electrolytic co-deposition method, cathodic alloying method and liquid cathode method, new FFC method, and its derived SOM method, etc., will be summarized systematically, and the future research will be put forward.

Abstract:Recently, additive manufacturing (AM) of titanium alloys has become favored by manufacturing industries. However, the obvious anisotropy of microstructure during the process of AM will be caused by the complex solidification mechanism, which will cause uncertainties in determining corrosion behavior. Two heat treatment techniques are developed to tune the microstructure of selective laser melted Ti-5Al-5Mo-5V-3Cr-1Zr (Ti-55531) alloy, i.e., αβ phase region (αβ-STA) and supertransus triplex heat treatment (Triplex-HT). Bimodal and bi-lamellar microstructure are obtained after certain heat treatments and the corresponding corrosion resistance is systematically investigated. The columnar β grains in the vertical planes (VP) are eliminated by conducting Triplex-HT, and the corresponding corrosion anisotropy between the horizontal planes (HP) and VP is significantly reduced. While the Ti-55531 treated by αβ-STA possesses significant refinement of primary α precipitates (αp) within β grains. The size of α grains relates to the Al-rich active region, where the corrosion pits are mainly concentrated. Further immersion experiments indicate that the generation and development of pits on the passive film are determined by the occupation of oxygen vacancies by chlorine ions. The results are expected to provide a reference for the selective laser melting (SLM) Ti-55531 alloy to eliminate anisotropy and improve corrosion resistance by the adjustment of the micromorphology.

Abstract:Many problems associated with ingot metallurgy, such as macrosegregation, dendritic segregation, chemical inhomogeneity, and regions of varying microstructure can be solved by powder metallurgy, which is an important method to fabricate TiAl alloy. The research states of TiAl alloy in powder metallurgy in China and other countries were reviewed and the fabrication processes of TiAl powder were introduced, including a prealloyed method, an element powder method, a mechanical alloying, and their corresponding sintering techniques. Their advantages, disadvantages and mechanical properties of the products were also reviewed, and some researching direction of TiAl powder metallurgy fabrication in future was finally pointed out.

Abstract:Water-cooling crucible vacuum induction melting is a good method for melting reactive alloys, the molten metal prepared has a homogenous composition, temperature and degree of superheating. The melting procedure of the y-TiAl based alloys melted with water-cooling crucible vacuum induction melting furnace was studied and the results showed that the non-uniform composition in the skull determined by the forming processing of the skull and the evaporation of alloying elements with higher vapor pressure results in a composition difference between nominal and analyzing composition. There would be a sedimentation of large density alloying element in the molten metal because of density difference. The problem above mentioned can be solved by controlling the melting parameters and applying master alloy.
