Abstract:Semiotics views everything as a way to produce and transmit meaning and as a means to interpret. Its signifying function is the most important function of a sign. As the two founders of modem semiology/semiotics, Saussure and Peirce have different understandings of the signifying process. After a comparative study, it is pointed out that the signifying process of Saussurean semiology is statistic, while that of Peircean semiotics is a dynamic evolutionary process, in which we are making ever-new interpretations of the sign for the achievement of the total knowledge of the meaning of a sign.

Abstract:Abstract In this article, I attempt to set out and discuss the main trajectories of Umberto Eco’s thinking on the media and mass communication, based on a review of the author’s writings on these subjects. What emerges from the study is Eco’s attention to the public and to forms of reception; his attention to the relationship between media communication and reality, which involves investigating the concept of “truth” in an area such as that of mass communication; his cross-media view of information, seen from a pluralistic and polyphonic viewpoint; the ethical tension that is always present in Eco’s work; his unfailing propensity for teaching. What emerges above all is the way in which the theoretical and practical tools used by Eco were developed in the context of reflections on the media and mass communication: an indication that alongside its “philosophical vocation,” Eco’s semiotics was always characterized also by an essential “empirical vocation.”

Abstract:Referencing Umberto Eco's novel Baudolino, the author discusses issues concerning the authenticity of the narrative, specifically the distortions in the story presented to the audience and doubts surrounding the veracity of the tale. The act of narration is associated with the shame caused by the abuse and neglect that is an integral part of this story. The ambivalence of the protagonist--to tell his story and to keep it (and his true identity) concealed--associates narration, a creative act, with lying. Trauma generates the lies and hiddenness as a means of coping with abuse and indifference. In order to deal with the feelings of inadequacy caused by his humble birth, the traumatized protagonist lies: he romanticizes his family origins, the illusion of being the offspring of distinguished parents. His attempt to win the love of the parents, by being both good and all-knowing, is one of the motivating forces of his family romance. Telling lies makes the protagonist omniscient: he is the only one who knows if and when he is telling the truth. Paradoxically, the narrator creates and undermines that image of omniscience by revealing the thought processes of one character while leaving opaque those of the protagonist, and by denying the trueness of the tale affirmed when he presents as objective his own subjective sentiments by indirectly attributing them to the protagonist. The uncertainty that underpins the narration is indicative of the storyteller's absence. This vacancy structures the work because it allows kindred spirits, nonjudgmental readers (listeners) who willingly suspend disbelief, to enter the world of the narrator. This uncritical participation counters the chaos of the storyteller's reality, as they create their own new world where the split parental images are united.

Abstract:The world as inhabited by human beings is the world humanized,that is,filled with meaning.The world,a mixture of things and signs,presents itself to human beings as a complicated picture.First of all,signs have their source in materiality,but the sign vehicles are not necessarily material: it could be vacant,lacking material against the material background.Therefore,the sign should be defined as "a perception that could be interpreted as carrying a meaning".Because of their materiality,signs could either be reduced to pure things without meaning,or to pure signs that do not possess any "usefulness".In between the two extremes,signs could acquire different degrees of practical and "unpractical" meanings.That is why all things in the world are two-fold "things-signs" whose functions vary.

Abstract:Many experts on conspiracy theory reduce the phenomenon to its rational, cognitive dimension. 1Yet the aesthetic dimension and narrative pleasure are obvious in conspiracist discourse, whose rhetoric closely follows the codes of popular fiction. Have we not underestimated the quest to “please”? We postulate a continuity between audiences’ attitudes to fiction and to “conspiracy theories”, which have become relatively indistinguishable in the contemporary context of information overload. Umberto Eco’s work is particularly illuminating in this respect, as it focuses on the indistinguishability of the true and the plausible, and metalepsis as a transgression of the fictional pact. The reception of two of his major “conspiracy” novels, Foucault’s Pendulum and The Prague Cemetery, reveals an emancipation of the metaleptic trope: the novelist, although known for his anti-fascism, finds himself accused of complacency towards anti-Semitism.

Abstract:Le Clezio's Mondo and Other Stories observes and questions many problems of the natural world and human society through the protagonists’ adventures in the strange world and children's naive vision. The special way of writing presents the possibility of creating multi-layers of meaning by the language of nature; the description of nature's elements shows the symbiotic relationships between man and nature; the free narrator and the expansion of time build a nature narration. The author constructs a poetics on the three levels of enunciative signs, figurative signs and narrative signs, thus expressing the theme of pursuit of freedom and return to nature in an artistic way.

Abstract:Abstract The paper starts with signs that Cooper and I found in the Old City of Jerusalem. It describes how the term Linguistic Landscape was applied to the recollections of francophone high school students of the signs they had seen. It traces the many collections of photos employing digital cameras and cell-phones, and research that was derived from these collections, including published papers and books, a journal, and an annual workshop. The paper regrets the rarity of details of authorship (but reports who was responsible for the Jerusalem street signs), and the tendency to interpret signs without detailing authorship. Signs provide evidence of the state of literacy, but ignore the sociolinguistic make-up of the local community, missing that for earlier scholars “linguistic landscape” meant speech as well as writing. It regrets the paucity of efforts to provide a theory of public signage, arguing that this could be derived from the field of Semiotics.

Abstract:Spanish Abstract: Ante la evolución de la cultura visual contemporánea, la semiótica de la imagen, en tanto disciplina y dominio, evoluciona a su vez en consonancia. Esta tendencia resume una serie de mejoras en las tecnologías de la visualización de manera de poder crear nuevas imágenes que representan la explosiva variación de la expresión cultural en el mundo. La semiótica cultural en general y la semiótica de la imagen en particular se benefician del progreso alcanzado por la biosemiótica, un campo que saca a la luz la riqueza de la Naturaleza como un inmenso libro de signos. Desde los trabajos de F. de Saussure y de C. S. Peirce en adelante, estamos en mejores condiciones de exponer e interpretar la relación entre significante y significado en una miríada de objetos de enunciación y significación. Este artículo retoma los principales conceptos que forman parte de la teoría de la semiótica y ofrece una reflexión acerca de la materia en relación con las afirmaciones y múltiples enlaces con la filosofía del lenguaje en la obra de U. Eco. English Abstract: In the face of contemporary visual culture evolution, semiotics of the image, as a discipline and domain, evolves accordingly. This trend epitomizes a series of improvements in visualization technologies so as to create new images that represents the explosive variation of cultural expression worldwide. Cultural semiotics in general and the semiotics of the image in particular seizes on the progress achieved by biosemiotics, a field that dredges up the unevenness of Nature as an immense book of signs. From the works of F. de Saussure and C. S. Peirce onwards, we are able to expound and interpret the relation between signifier and signified in a myriad of signification objects. This paper retakes the main concepts that encompasses the semiotics theory and the principles of semiotic meaning making and also offers a reflection about the subject matter in connection with U. Eco´s statements and linkages with the philosophy of language.

Abstract:One of the most important challenges for embodied and grounded theories of cognition concerns the representation of abstract concepts, such as "freedom." Many embodied theories of abstract concepts have been proposed. Some proposals stress the similarities between concrete and abstract concepts showing that they are both grounded in perception and action system while other emphasize their difference favoring a multiple representation view. An influential view proposes that abstract concepts are mapped to concrete ones through metaphors. Furthermore, some theories underline the fact that abstract concepts are grounded in specific contents, as situations, introspective states, emotions. These approaches are not necessarily mutually exclusive, since it is possible that they can account for different subsets of abstract concepts and words. One novel and fruitful way to understand the way in which abstract concepts are represented is to analyze how sign languages encode concepts into signs. In the present paper we will discuss these theoretical issues mostly relying on examples taken from Italian Sign Language (LIS, Lingua dei Segni Italiana), the visual-gestural language used within the Italian Deaf community. We will verify whether and to what extent LIS signs provide evidence favoring the different theories of abstract concepts. In analyzing signs we will distinguish between direct forms of involvement of the body and forms in which concepts are grounded differently, for example relying on linguistic experience. In dealing with the LIS evidence, we will consider the possibility that different abstract concepts are represented using different levels of embodiment. The collected evidence will help us to discuss whether a unitary embodied theory of abstract concepts is possible or whether the different theoretical proposals can account for different aspects of their representation.

Abstract:War, genocide, economic upheaval and terrorism have crushed belief in endlessly 'enlightened' progress. We more and more doubt the teleological nature of psychological events, including the activity of a Self or centre that guides the development of the subject. There is a growing view of a 'decentred' subject that develops in the face of an enigmatic Otherness. Jean Laplanche has created an extensive metapsychology describing this situation, emphasizing the original helplessness of an infant who is bathed in enigmatic messages from its very beginnings. These messages from the adult other are often sexualized, and are partly or largely unconscious to the sender. Laplanche calls this situation 'primal seduction'. The immature human cannot fully metabolize such adult messages, and through 'primal repression' they remain as the unconscious core of subjectivity. They disrupt psychological life, conveying a sense of signifying something to the subject. What they signify is an enigma, like finding a hieroglyph in the desert. The story of relationships and culture is the story of our repeated attempts to translate them, to respond to them. An analytic case illustrates these concepts as they appear in the transference, first as gaps and monsters, and then in the crucial and surprising appearance of transformative laughter. The vicissitudes of the clinical situation illustrate the vital importance of the enigmatic signifier in the development of the subject.

Abstract:Abstract Spatially interested sociolinguistics has cared little about the semiotics of nonexistence. The present article argues that the field would benefit from deepening its interest in questions of erasure and relative absence. A case in point, as the article shows, is graffiti. By analysing some semiotic facets of the erasure of graffiti, the article brings home the point that a semiotics of nonexistence is deeply embedded in the semiotic regimentation of space. The persistence of this condition calls for an analytical sensitisation to less obvious forms of semiosis.

Abstract:Adopting Greimas's semiotic rectangle theory,this essay explores the actantial dimension of The Desert in hope of making sense of the novel's structure and suggesting a way of reading the meanings implicated in the novel itself.It argues that an analysis of the modes of identity construction in the novel foregrounds the similarity between a heterogeneous identity and the disadvantaged Nature.An effect of this comparison is to valorize a circular discursive structure which gives the novel much of its resonance and also complements Greimas's actantial schema and semiotic rectangle.

Abstract:ABSTRACT This paper discusses, in the light of cultural-historical theory, the role of artistic sign in aesthetic education. It emphasizes the concept of sign, aesthetic perception, expression, artistic creation, and human development. Theoretically and methodologically, it dialogues with Vigotski and with two art researchers: the first one carried out semi-structured interviews with professional artists, and the second one organized rounds of conversations, at school, with children of literacy age. The theoretical and practical discussion carried out in this paper allows us to think about elements for aesthetic education in connection with the concept of artistic sign, and indicates possibilities of organizing arts in education, as aesthetic education, in order to potentiate the human cultural development.
