Abstract:Research on language in mathematics education is largely dominated by a 'normalcy' of spoken languages. This modal hegemony does not only affect a whole group of learners in failing to provide access that is epistemologically equitable—those using sign language as their preferred mode for mathematical discourse—it also obscures our view on the roles language can play in mathematical thinking and learning. As a field, we can only win from seeking to understand Deaf learners of mathematics beyond a disability, as learners of mathematics with a specific linguistic background that influences mathematical thinking and learning in peculiar ways. In this contribution, I suggest a shift in mindset towards a more inclusive view on language in mathematics education research and practice. I propose basic principles to inform a perspective for reconsidering the role of language in mathematics thinking and learning, inspired by work of philosopher Francois Jullien. This perspective counters a perspective that merely integrates sign language into existing research and instead searches for dialogue between linguistic modalities in learning mathematics, looking beyond language as spoken or written. This approach will be illustrated by the case of the modal affordance of iconicity foregrounded in signed mathematical discourse, its role in Deaf students' mathematics thinking and learning, and how this can inform existing research and practice dealing with language in mathematics education.

In the preface, Emmorey states her goal for this book: to illustrate what can be learned about human language, cognition, and the brain by studying signed languages and the deaf people who use them. She clearly achieves that goal in this excellent volume. Her scholarship is impeccable, something we have come to expect from this author. First of all, the organization of the book is impressive. Each chapter explicitly presents specific goals and then proceeds through those goals in an organized and clear style. The conclusion of each chapter includes suggested readings with a brief explanation of how these suggestions support the chapter. Second, this volume includes research on a variety of signed languages—Nicaraguan, Australian, Danish, and Irish, to name a few—and provides a truly comprehensive approach to the topic.

Abstract:This essay, a companion piece to “Discipline and Punish: despatches from the citation manual wars and other (literally) unspeakable stories” [Law's cultural mediations, special edition. 2001. Griffith Law Review 10(2)], undertakes a situated and critical cultural analysis of US law, with particular attention to the law school's insistent “training for hierarchy” and the interrelationship of that training with the bodies and texts that are constitutive of judge-made law in the United States. And who promptly told the student. And who promptly told the student. This essay revisits the early orientation of cultural studies work towards interrogating subject-formation and critically positioning and problematizing the scholarly subject and the various institutions, discourses and practices that produce both her subject position and her critical practice. At the same time it also stages an anti-racist, anti-sexist, and anti-classist engagement with the congeries of mechanisms by which hegemony is inscribed, reproduced, and accorded value by a range of practices to do with disciplinary texts and their production within US legal institutions. Both “semiotic”/“textualist” and “culturalist”, then, in orientation, this essay finds little space for celebration or play, although it alludes in its title, inter alia, to Inventing the Abbots, an artifact of popular US cinema that was at once both a reinscription of the family romance and an exploration of the mutually reinforcing and corrosive effects of class, sexism and secrets/silence. Finally, the essay seeks to explore questions raised by Meaghan Morris and Gayatri Spivak about the possibility or radical transformation through such critical cultural practice and the risks of iteration that is complicity, of submission to and collaboration with disciplinary violence, and of the complex politics of negotiation.

Abstract:Abstract The paper starts with signs that Cooper and I found in the Old City of Jerusalem. It describes how the term Linguistic Landscape was applied to the recollections of francophone high school students of the signs they had seen. It traces the many collections of photos employing digital cameras and cell-phones, and research that was derived from these collections, including published papers and books, a journal, and an annual workshop. The paper regrets the rarity of details of authorship (but reports who was responsible for the Jerusalem street signs), and the tendency to interpret signs without detailing authorship. Signs provide evidence of the state of literacy, but ignore the sociolinguistic make-up of the local community, missing that for earlier scholars “linguistic landscape” meant speech as well as writing. It regrets the paucity of efforts to provide a theory of public signage, arguing that this could be derived from the field of Semiotics.

Abstract:The purpose of this study is to find evidence for supporting the hypothesis that language is the mirror of our thinking, our prejudices and cultural stereotypes. In this analysis, a questionnaire was administered to 537 people. The answers have been analysed to see if gender stereotypes were present such as the attribution of psychological and behavioural characteristics. In particular, the aim was to identify, if any, what are the stereotyped images, which emerge in defining the roles of men and women in modern society. Moreover, the results given can be a good starting point to understand if gender stereotypes, and the expectations they produce, can result in penalization or inequality. If so, the language and its use would create inherently a gender bias, which influences evaluations both in work settings both in everyday life.

Abstract:Few studies have been undertaken that explore visual conceptual metaphors in picturebooks. As these types of metaphors are instrumental in creating and reinforcing networks of associations that result in pervasive cognitive schema, it may be fruitful to use schema criticism to explore their implications for social justice. Close readings of several picturebooks are offered to examine visual conceptual metaphors that perpetuate conventional schemas of gender and race, with extended attention given to the ways in which images that metaphorically link darkness with fear, loneliness, and irrationality may contribute to dysconscious racism, and how some picturebooks effectively challenge those schemas.

Abstract:Studies of homesigns have shed light on the human capacity for language and on the challenging problem of language acquisition. The study of homesign has evolved from a perspective grounded in gesture studies and child development to include sign language linguistics and the role of homesigns in language emergence at the community level. One overarching finding is that homesigns more closely resemble sign languages used by linguistic communities than they resemble the gestures produced by hearing people along with spoken language. Homesigns may not exhibit all of the linguistic properties of community languages, but the properties they do exhibit are language properties, and for the people who use them, homesigns are their language. Further, the linguistic structures in homesigns are innovated by the deaf people who use them and are imperfectly learned by their hearing communication partners. I close with a call to action: We cannot celebrate discoveries about the mind made possible by studies of homesigns and emerging languages while ignoring the pervasiveness of language deprivation among deaf people, and the relative lack of deaf participation in science, even in studies of sign languages. While the scientific community learns much from studying homesigns and sign languages, we also have a responsibility to work toward ensuring that every deaf person has access to language, communication, and education.

In defence of language-interpretive social science: on the critiques of Peter Winch’s conception of understanding

Abstract:[[critical theoryinterpretationsocial scienceunderstandingPeter Winch ]] In his highly influential book (The Idea of a Social Science and its Relation to Philosophy, first published in 1958), Peter Winch introduces an alternative concept of interpretive social science, in which the focus is shifted from the actors’ subjective motives to the common elements found in every understandable action: language-games and rule-following. This Wittgensteinian, linguistic version of interpretive social science has had its vast array of critics throughout the years: according to some of them, it neglects the practical side of sociology; while others claim that it fails properly to answer the questions raised by the translation from one language-game to another, or that it renders critical social theory impossible. In my article, I try to reflect critically upon these critiques themselves, showing that the Winchian theory does not overlook the practice in understanding the different forms of life; that with slight modifications it is able to cope with the problem of translation, and that it does not aspire to be the critical theory that many of its critics would like it to be.

Abstract:This article explores the methodological value of post-structuralism for sociocultural theory. The Peircean notion of knowledge serves as a rationale for incorporating a post-structuralist perspective of discourse into Vygotsky-inspired sociocultural approach to conceptual development. Central to this incorporation is an analytic frame of reference devised to examine how knowledge construction is mediated through the use of language and other semiotic tools. The article provides an interpretive analysis of mother–child interaction in the reading of dual-language picture books, interwoven with a post-structuralist exposition of knowledge, power and discourse. It is suggestive of what sociocultural theory would need to consider in terms of power relations when theorising the role of semiotic mediation in transforming human mind and activity.

Abstract:Signers and speakers coordinate a broad range of intentionally expressive actions within the spatiotemporal context of their face-to-face interactions (Parmentier, 1994; Clark, 1996; Johnston, 1996; Kendon, 2004). Varied semiotic repertoires combine in different ways, the details of which are rooted in the interactions occurring in a specific time and place (Goodwin, 2000; Kusters et al., 2017). However, intense focus in linguistics on conventionalized symbolic form/meaning pairings (especially those which are arbitrary) has obscured the importance of other semiotics in face-to-face communication. A consequence is that the communicative practices resulting from diverse ways of being (e.g., deaf, hearing) are not easily united into a global theoretical framework. Here we promote a theory of language that accounts for how diverse humans coordinate their semiotic repertoires in face-to-face communication, bringing together evidence from anthropology, semiotics, gesture studies and linguistics. Our aim is to facilitate direct comparison of different communicative ecologies. We build on Clark's (1996) theory of language use as 'actioned' via three methods of signaling: describing, indicating, and depicting. Each method is fundamentally different to the other, and they can be used alone or in combination with others during the joint creation of multimodal 'composite utterances' (Enfield, 2009). We argue that a theory of language must be able to account for all three methods of signaling as they manifest within and across composite utterances. From this perspective, language-and not only language use-can be viewed as intentionally communicative action involving the specific range of semiotic resources available in situated human interactions.

Abstract:Psychological Science, Ahead of Print. Languages carve up conceptual space in varying ways—for example, English uses the verb cut both for cutting with a knife and for cutting with scissors, but other languages use distinct verbs for these events. We asked whether, despite this variability, there are universal constraints on how languages categorize events involving tools (e.g., knife-cutting). We analyzed descriptions of tool events from two groups: (a) 43 hearing adult speakers of English, Spanish, and Chinese and (b) 10 deaf child homesigners ages 3 to 11 (each of whom has created a gestural language without input from a conventional language model) in five different countries (Guatemala, Nicaragua, United States, Taiwan, Turkey). We found alignment across these two groups—events that elicited tool-prominent language among the spoken-language users also elicited tool-prominent language among the homesigners. These results suggest ways of conceptualizing tool events that are so prominent as to constitute a universal constraint on how events are categorized in language.

Abstract:This article examines the linguistic landscape of Kampala (Uganda) by analysing the language dynamics that play out through shop signs. Engaging with data collected through photographs and interviews, this article draws on three interrelated theoretical perspectives: the markedness of languages, the symbolic power of languages, and good reasons for language use. The main findings suggest that the languages used on shop signs in Uganda are informed largely by attitudes towards English being a practical commercial language. Moreover, English is considered by shop owners to be the language of "class," power, and a marker of the "educated" and therefore occupies the largest space on the shop signs. As such, the use of English on shop signs does not imply literacy or proficiency in the language, but rather forms a prestigious-symbolic identity.
