Abstract:Semiotics views everything as a way to produce and transmit meaning and as a means to interpret. Its signifying function is the most important function of a sign. As the two founders of modem semiology/semiotics, Saussure and Peirce have different understandings of the signifying process. After a comparative study, it is pointed out that the signifying process of Saussurean semiology is statistic, while that of Peircean semiotics is a dynamic evolutionary process, in which we are making ever-new interpretations of the sign for the achievement of the total knowledge of the meaning of a sign.

Abstract:Abstract Although legal terms are conventionally considered to have self-referential, self-closed meaning independent of context, a legal term only acquires its meaning within a given context. As long as the context varies, the meaning of the same legal term as a signifier may change correspondingly. Based on case studies by applying semiotics, we argue that a legal term is just a sign within its sign system; a legal term as an individual sign does not have any inherent meaning, and its meaning can only exist in the relationship with other signs or sign systems. In other words, a legal term only denotes in a particular temporal and spatial context. Through this study, we conclude four propositions about a legal term as a sign: first, the connection of a legal term with a legal concept is relatively arbitrary; second, the meaning of a legal term exists in a sign system; third, a legal term can be subject to multiple interpretations; fourth, the defining of a legal term may be affected by other sign systems.

Abstract:This paper proposes to articulate the differences among premodern, modern, and postmodern on the perspective of structuralist semiotics, and with which to explain the significance of Chinese aesthetics in this globalization time. There are some similarities in semiotic structure between premodern Chinese aesthetics and postmodern west aesthetics, i. e. both emphasize the relationship between art or the aesthetic and real life, and thus they can join together to fight against modern aesthetics which emphasizes the autonomy of art and the aesthetic. But the differences between premodern Chinese aesthetics and postmodern west aesthetics seem to be even clear. The former emphasizes that art should follow the principle of reality, and the latter, on the contrary, emphasizes that reality can be looked as a kind of art. These differences make Chinese aesthetics very important in rescuing postmodern west aesthetics from the one-sided emphasizing on the fictitiousness.

Abstract:Abstract Unlike alphabetic letters, Chinese characters, as orthographic symbols, can represent the meaning of a word. According to Peirce’s triadic division of signs, we believe that a Chinese character is an iconic sign for the referent that its meaning denotes; that is to say, there is something perceptually in common between the character and its denotatum; however, we could be misled by the simple definition of this “similarity” because perceptual experience is not naive but something conventional. Based on the degree of conventionality among iconic signs, we distinguish their iconic nature (i.e., iconicity) into primary and secondary kinds - the former having an obvious similarity between the sign and its referent and the latter showing a sophisticated reflection of an analogical relationship. The construction of the Chinese character system has resulted from the superposition of different iconic relationships, while their differentiation has led to the classification of Chinese characters playing an important role in the recognition of their meanings.

Semiotics East and West: an aesthetic-semiotic approach to translating the iconicity of classical Chinese poetry

Abstract:Abstract For some Western translators before the twentieth century, domestication was their strategy to translate the classical Chinese poetry into English. But the consequence of this strategy was the sacrifice of the ideogrammatic nature of these poems. The translators in the twentieth century, especially the Imagist poets and translators in the 1930s, overcame the problems of their predecessors by developing their translation theory and practice in ways that are close to those of many contemporary semiotic translators. But both Imagist translators and contemporary semiotic translators have the problem of indifference to the feeling of the original in their translations. For the problem of translating the classical Chinese poetry by the Westerners before the twentieth century and the Imagist poets and translators of the twentieth century, see Zhao and Flotow 2018. This paper attempts to set up an aesthetic-semiotic approach to the translation of the iconicity of classical Chinese poetry on the basis of the examination of both Eastern and Western translation studies.

Abstract:The subject's perception of the object and the relationship between the two have long been regarded as the main path for human beings to explore the world. In semiotic research, scholars have also mostly adhered to this research idea that the symbolic subject and object remain unified. However, the semiosis of the objective world is extremely complicated, and the interpretation of symbolic meaning varies greatly. Therefore, the cultural semiotics of jingshen challenges the dichotomy of cognitive subjects and objects and proposes a more valuable cognitive model, "I lost myself," on the basis of Chuang Tzu's philosophical thought. This paper attempts to interpret the task of the cultural semiotics of jingshen through the guiding idea of "I lost myself." This indicates that if an individual seeks to comprehend and interpret the symbolic meaning authentically and thoroughly, they must adhere to Dao and escape the bondage of intersubjectivity. This paper hypothesizes that the ultimate purpose of the cultural semiotics of jingshen is to release the symbolic meaning in a broadened space and return it to its original, natural, and unconstrained form.

Abstract:This paper put forward a point that brand is a communication sign under the view of semiol-ogy.Based on the sign-triangle theory,this paper attempted to establish the triangle brand sign which was composed of three elements:product/service,name /logo,enterprise express/customer cognition, and further discussed the construction and communication of brand sign.Firstly,we must treat the quality of the product itself seriously,and then establish signifier and the signified relation of brand sign.Hence the representing relationship of sign and product and implied relationship of sign and meaning should also be constructed;Secondly,we must attach great importance to the naming process of product name,using the product’s name and logo to symbolize the products which will then com-plete sign’s encoding and decoding process of sign’s cognition and communication;At last,we should use various marketing tools to shape the brand and increase the audience’s brand awareness, which will help them establish an unique and strong brand association and brand promotion.

Abstract:It is a paper focused on an analysis based on the Western idea of Semeiology. And it is specially based on two concepts of 'significant' and 'signifie'. With a comparison of some essential concepts of classical Western and traditional Chinese architecture ideas, a conclusion could be reach that the classical Western architecture have had paid much more attentions on the category of 'form' based on the ideas of 'beauty' or 'delight'. As a contrast, traditional Chinese architecture would have paid some more attentions on the category of 'meaning' base on the idea of 'rule' (Du) which could differentiate the social ranks. The analysis shows us some essential differences between Western and Chinese traditional architecture.

Abstract:Contemporary art is always in a cultural tension between tradition and modernity,self and the other. In order to acquire a more favorable situation in international art field,more and more artists choose to express their own feeling through cultural sign with Chinese characteristics. As regards to Chinese sign in contemporary art,there are mainly four discourses in art theory circle: art conspiracy theory,demonized China theory,cultural colonization,and art negotiation. We agree with the fourth opinion since contemporary art is a gambling result among authority,market,folk,and other various powers. The gaze from the other is the otherness element for defining cultural identity,and self- image construction. However,the sight of the other is not singular,but is multicomponent including traditionalism and revolutionism. It is the multiple sights that establish the multiple visual subject and self- identity.

Abstract:The biggest difference between Chinese Language and Western Language lies on the difference of their signifier.Chinese Language mainly characterizes its numerous homonyms(same phoneme and different character) and sound-character mixed signifier,which led to its developed written language.Wenyan(classical Chinese language) becomes a symbol of high culture.Calligraphy,then,became a form of art.Recognition of written Chinese delays the progress of immediate perception of words,and it leads to a thinking way which is full of tasteful apprehension.Homonymy produces metaphor.This is why China has been called a poetic nation and Chinese a poetic language.Such culture as well as literature can avoid drawbacks of metaphysics,being-to-beings change,the popularity of scientism for instance.However,People who speak Chinese holds the idea that the nature of language is for use,which enables Chinese culture to safeguard and contain some final values,Tao,for example,instead of the nihilism.What role Chinese culture will play in the era of globalization depends on whether it can create a new ethic value.The ambiguity of Chinese word based on its special signifier causes pluralism and protects final values,and it should bring out an active answer to what is goodness in human life.Chinese culture as well as its logic working will make special contribution to the modern world.

Abstract:A pure logical study of reasoning can only reveal the rules of thought between propositions involved,while viewed purely from the nature of signs,only a simple classification can be obtained.Nevertheless,an interactive study of logic and semiotics indicates that the operation of logic is on different levels.The study of the operations of logic from the perspective of semiotic semantic structure can reveal some laws of the semiotic semantic structure itself,i.e.it also varies at different levels.For instance,deduction operates from the second cognitive level to the first level,while inductive logic operates from the first to the second,etc.This way of analysis sheds new light on and further develops Peirce's classification of signs into index,icon and symbol.This is a win-win phenomenon resulting from an interdisciplinary research of pure logic and pure semiotics.After a brief analysis of the representative views of traditional logic,a cognitive redefinition of relevant logic phenomenon from the perspective of semiotic structure and nature is proposed.This dynamic semiotic view,which puts formal logic and natural logic reasoning in the perspective of semiotics,enables us to make a goal-oriented distinction of traditional logic and pragmatic logic.Therefore,on the basis of existing logic,more refined research on pragmatic inference can be conducted.

Abstract:Terminology is the crystallization of human scientific knowledge in language, and its standardization directly affects the development of a discipline. The correct and standardized use of terminology plays an important role for a discipline. The four basic features of a term are professionalism, scientificity, monosemy and systematicness. The form and content of a term must correspond to each other, that is, a term only represents one concept (monosemy); a concept has only one reference (single name). The practical significance of this study embodies Chinese scholars’ interest in the study of public signs and linguistic landscape because these two terms are similar, overlapped and confused. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish between these two terms and their concepts. This paper analyzes the conceptual similarities and differences between public signs and the linguistic landscape from many angles. These two concepts are similar in content, but not identical. The purpose of this study is to clarify the vague understanding of public signs and language landscape in academic circles, standardize the use of academic terms, and provide correct definitions for the compilation of terminology dictionaries.

Abstract:One of the most notable features of modern Chinese scholarship is the reinterpretation of traditional Chinese learning in terms of Western academic and philosophical categories. However, this article will argue that there also exists a corresponding reverse process to which not enough attention has been paid by scholars of modern Chinese studies. This reverse process consists of reinterpreting Western philosophical concepts in terms of traditional Chinese categories and concepts. In fact, these two processes have occurred simultaneously and can in effect be seen as two sides of the same coin. What has happened is that, on the one hand, modern Chinese scholars have been trying to reinterpret traditional Chinese thought with Western categories and concepts, while on the other hand they are interpreting and therefore misunderstanding the meaning of Western categories and concepts by confounding them with conceptions from Chinese intellectual traditions. It is the interweaving of these two processes that becomes characteristic of modern Chinese scholarship. By examining how modern Chinese scholars have interpreted the meaning of "metaphysics" as a Western philosophical term, this article will try to show how the meaning of this Western term has been to a large degree shaped by traditional Chinese thinking, especially by that of neo-Confucians.

Abstract:The paper aims to clarify the distinction of intension and concept between translation semiotics and semiosic translation to determine their disciplinary classification as well as the theoretical framework of translation semiotics. Translation semiotics is a relatively young interdisciplinary field connecting specifically semiotics and translation studies. In essence, it is a branch of semiotics where the research object is the semiotic transformations and sign activities involved in the translational semiosic and interpretive process. Semiosic translation attaches itself conceptually to an extended notion of semiosis involving the transformation of any sign system into other sign systems and pertains to the illustration and analysis of translational phenomena from the perspective of semiotics. Translation semiotics focuses on semiotic transformations and constructs a semiotic theory and application model based on the dimension of semiotic transformation. Both translation semiotics and semiosic translation take semiotic transformations as their research object. Notwithstanding, semiosic translation puts particular emphasis on semiosis, whereas translation semiotics explores the phenomena of semiotic transformations and related problems involved in the process of translation grounded on semiotic theories and methodology (Jia 2016a: 96). As such, translation semiotics and semiosic translation are under the jurisdiction of different disciplines.

Abstract:According to Peirce,the founder of American semiotics,signs can be divided into three categories: icon,index and symbol.Symbol is built up on the basis of social customs and traditions so that it can not be inferred or deduced directly.Language is a kind of typical symbol which has no indispensable relationship with the object it represents or suggests.This kind of relationship is arbitrary and occasional instead of being inevitable.Different nationalities may have different customs and traditions so that they may develop different language sign systems.People can use some symbols to express some abstract notions and feelings which are difficult to emulate and can not be directly referred to.Human beings get accustomed to using their familiar things to explain the implication of some cultural phenomena.Different cultural atmosphere and natural ecological environments make people have different association.Plants are the symbol of the natural world and the representative of the beautiful natural surroundings and they are closely related to human existence.Many idiomatic usages and symbols about plants came into being,and so did such culture.Generally speaking,people take interest in those beautiful or vigorous plants,which arouse their deep feeling.For example,the Westerners like to use ″rose″,for they take it as a love token.But in Chinese culture,the plants ″pine,bamboo and plum″ remind people of the spirit of being vigorous,tall and straight,the symbol of long life and exemplary conduct and nobility of character and branches and flowers that withstand the frost and defy the snow.The identical colors like red,blue,black,white,green,gray,yellow may be used most frequently by the world people,but they bring them different associative meaning.The color ″red″ in English symbolizes ″violence,deficit″,while it symbolizes ″happy,a festival day,revolution″ in Chinese.Influenced by experience,cultural traditions and social institutions,people have gradually formed their own values,aesthetic standards,moral standards and religious tradition.According to their experience,speeches which human beings use animals as vehicles to speak highly of noble human behavior or spirit or belittle undue human behavior have been produced.In western culture,″owl″ symbolizes wisdom,calmness,while in Chinese culture,″owl″ is described as the phantom of the devil and the symbol of ill omen.So once people establish relationship between some language signs and objects,which is acknowledged by a particular society,certain symbols may come into being.Different symbols derive from different cultures.Language sign system is the symbolic representation of a people and comprises their outlooks on life,their values,their customs,their ways of living and thinking as well as their historic and cultural backgrounds.Therefore,during the development language sign system and its profound cultural connotations have been deeply ingrained with traces of social life,reflecting the unique cultural tradition of a particular society.Symbols with rich and colorful feelings may lead to great differences due to the different cultural backgrounds of the coders.It is a meaningful effort to probe into implied meanings of symbols based on the analysis of denotations and profound cultural connotations as well as discuss the intercultural differences in different cultural backgrounds.
