Abstract:Sinology in ancient China referred to the country's educational administrative faculties and high educational institutions,with its teaching courses mainly based on Wujing and Sishu.Annotated by the descending scholars of generations,these classical editions have not only maintained the national cultural artery for nearly five thousand years,but also made it stronger.Modern sinology is not the rupture of the traditional,but the adoption and development in academic spirits.In the beginning of the 20th century,regarding the severe domestic and foreign troubles,learned intellectuals in China started to advocate sinology,with the aim to guarantee the nation and the race,and to redeem the country and survive.Sinology was therefore perceived as the theoretic source of country's building to compete with Western learning.And these actions towards sinology gained nationwide attention and preoccupation.In present world,although sinology has suffered repeated hardships,a blissful scene out of the bottom valley of misfortune has already presented.Under these newly historical conditions,the teaching and research of sinology needs a new vision of globalization,a new thinking of Harmony and Cooperation(He-he),a new idea of alteration,a new value of Multiplying and a new method of modernization.Only by these ways can we make a new interpretation of sinology.

Abstract:Sinology stands in contrast to Western Learning and New Learning .The tradition of sinology is com-plicated due to the complexity of the tradition itself .Sinology tradition can be analyzed from the following five lev-els, i.e.knowledge level , academic level , the level of moral values and life pursuit , ultimate concern level and national spirit level .Methodologies to study and analyze Sinology vary a great deal , including the Marxist approach of practical hermeneutics , the method of critical inheritance , and contradictory analysis approach .To transform the creativity of Sinology tradition is to strongly advocate and carry forward the "Cultural Synthetic Innovation"research program , on the one hand , criticizing the tradition with modernization theory , on the other hand , criticizing moder-nity with traditional and postmodern theory , and developing contemporary advanced culture in China with Chinese characteristics, Chinese majesty , Chinese style and Chinese modernity .

Abstract:In the current context of globalization,the study of overseas sinology has once again become a cutting edge theoretic topic.Although sinology has long been marginalized in Western academia,sinological studies has always been attached importance to in domestic scholarship,due to its unique research approach and fresh theoretic perspective.To the author,on the one hand,we should realize the long-standing influence of Orientalism on Western sinological studies,as a result of which ancient China has been fantasized and modern China has been misunderstood or even distorted;but on the other hand,there are quite a few outstanding sinologists in the West,whose important works have certainly enlightened us domestic scholars.In this sense,we should say that unlike Orientalism,sinology implies a certain "depoliticizing" and "de-ideologizing" tendency.It should carry on equal dialogue with domestic Chinese studies and complement the latter.Especially when we want to promote the research results of Chinese culture world wide,we all the more need to cooperate with Sinologists.Furthermore,the research results achieved by the sinologists have also given China's Occidental studies significant enlightenment.

Abstract:Sinology is an important way for the world to know about China and to promote cultural exchanges and civilization development. Therefore,Sinology research should not only be done on ancient Chinese history and literature,but it also should cover matters in public policy,economic development and social development. Moreover,it should pay more attention to the values in traditional Chinese culture, because this is related to the world's perceptions of Chinese civilization's influence and the development of the modern global civilization. All in all,there are three values in Chinese culture which are conducive to the development of the modern global civilization: the value system emphasizing life's freedom,the belief "man and nature as a whole" and the world view of supreme harmony. They can offer effective solutions for many problems,such as physical and psychological diseases,spiritual alienation brought about by material desires,climate and environmental changes and international disputes. Consequently,a more advanced new civilization would be created in the world,and it would be more harmonious in the nature, the society,as well as human body and mind.

Abstract:At a time when Chinese intellectuals and academics are more and more interested in the way Westerners, especially sinologists, approach and study Chinese culture, it seems relevant to pause and reflect on the critical and diversified approaches contributed by European sinologies. Special attention should be paid more particularly to the French tradition, which was the very first to be set up in the early nineteenth century within various prestigious academic institutions that are still very much alive today, but which has been somewhat pushed to the background by the powerful thrust of American, and more generally Anglophone, sinology ever since the aftermath of the Second World War. This article proposes to look at the way the French invention of sinology in the nineteenth century was under the influence of the concomitant rise of philosophy as a specifically European academic discipline.

Abstract:Situating the controversy over Sinologism within the larger context of geopolitical and economic rebalance of power in the globalized world, this article seeks to provide a few strategies to tackle the problems arising from the problematic production of China knowledge and to rethink the approaches to cross-cultural research and knowledge production. By highlighting the need for self-conscious reflections on epistemology and methodology in China studies, it calls on scholars to treat Sinologism as both a local and global concept so as to go beyond the local horizon of Sinological studies and enter a global horizon of cross-cultural studies.

Abstract:In this article, the author presents a discussion of what he calls sinological translation, an important area of cultural exchange between China and the West, with a focus on the recent translation of Chinese culture into English. While arguing that in the international phase of sinological translation when globalisation characterises most cultural scenes no translator can maintain one singular cultural identity, he offers to examine the differences in translation among different translators, both native and nonnative speakers of English, from a comparative cultural perspective. As a conclusion, he cites Hall's theory of communication to support his argument that the potential readers the translator conjures up during the process of translation and his negotiation with them plays an important role in his decision making in the translation and in the formation of the style of the translated text.

Abstract:International Sinologists paid early attention to the Pu Lu works that originally existed as scientific and technological text, but constructed an unique pedigree of knowledge with scientific, political and humanistic implications, also coursed the innovative practice of style.The most outstanding representative figure in this field is professor Ronald Egan of East Asian Department of Stanford University in the United States.Ronald Egan is one of the early scholars who started from the cultural background of the times, focused on the study of flower planting in song Dynasty as an aesthetic existence, and deeply explored the cultural context and cultural thoughts in the works of “Pu Lu”, reflecting the outstanding frontier and creative analysis.He investigated the relationship between the space, scholars and abundant natural resources in the works of Pu Lu in the Song Dynasty.He carried out an in-depth exploration of the self-contradictory argumentation in the works of Pu Lu in the Song Dynasty, he thus achieved an insight into the constraints of cultural tradition.

Abstract:For centuries, Italy was in the forefront of studying and spreading knowledge on China in the West. Some of the leaders of the exceptional cultural exchanges of the seventeenth century were Italian. After a period of decline, from the second half of the twentieth century, there has been a revival of China studies. Following the growth of China's international impact, the traditional research fields have been supplemented by new specializations. Studies on modern China, its language, politics, institutions, society, economy, media etc., have enriched the Sinological panorama and multiplied university courses. After an overview of Italian Sinology of the past, this study will focus on the recent developments: the universities, the research fields, the scholars, the associations and journals involved. The challenges the Sinologists are facing, due to the current Chinese political situation, will be highlighted, together with some consideration of the future of Italian Sinology.

Abstract:Abstract The arrival of postcolonial theory in China and the country’s global rise came with the realization that its self-image is often distorted by Western ideological discourse, conveyed through Western Sinology. Drawing from Edward Said’s Orientalism , some Chinese scholars have classified the ideological dimensions of Western Sinology as Sinologism, and have pointed out its implications for China’s capacity to think of itself on its own terms. The concept has sparked debate mainly inside Chinese academia about the objective quality of Western Sinology. This article will attempt a critical overview of two major formulations of Sinologism, underlining its major presuppositions and placing the notion in the broader context of China’s anxieties of “academic colonization” by Western intellectual practices. It will conclude by arguing that attempts to discredit Western Sinology rely on some problematic assumptions and suggests East-West comparative studies as an alternative way of dialectically constructing Chinese identity.

Abstract:In recent decade,the research on overseas Chinese classics has become a new trend in the international sinology.There are profound internal and external reasons to this trend,and the formation of the trend is realized by newly- found materials which call for a new theoretical proposition and a new method of thinking. The"novelty"about the trend shows in the close-reading of new materials and the reflection of academic position of sinology,and these practices may be expected to initiate a new departure for the Chinese scholarship in the 21th century. In brief,the research paradigm will shift from"the Western dame"to"the Eastern daughter. "This paper focuses on the relationship between the Chinese literature and East Asian civilizations,and proposes five areas of research which may benefit from overseas classical texts in Chinese language. It describes the potential space for exploration of the classical Chinese research and argues for the"necessary tension"between facts and theory.
