Abstract:Subject to a voltage, a dielectric elastomer (DE) deforms. Voltage-induced strains of above 100% have been observed when DEs are prestretched, and for DEs of certain network structures. Understanding mechanisms of large actuation strains is an active area of research. We propose that the voltage- stretch response of DEs may be modified by prestretch, or by using polymers with "short" chains. This modification results in suppression or elimination of electromechanical instability, leading to large actuation strains. We propose a method to select and design a DE, such that the actuation strain is maximized. The theoretical predictions agree well with existing experimental data. Abstract:Dielectric elastomers are capable of large voltage-induced deformation, but achieving such large deformation in practice has been a major challenge due to electromechanical instability and electric breakdown. The complex nonlinear behavior suggests an important opportunity: electromechanical instability can be harnessed to achieve giant voltage-induced deformation. We introduce the following principle of operation: place a dielectric elastomer near the verge of snap-through instability, trigger the instability with voltage, and bend the snap-through path to avert electric breakdown. We demonstrate this principle of operation with a commonly used experimental setup—a dielectric membrane mounted on a chamber of air. The behavior of the membrane can be changed dramatically by varying parameters such as the initial pressure in the chamber, the volume of the chamber, and the prestretch of the membrane. We use a computational model to analyze inhomogeneous deformation and map out bifurcation diagrams to guide the experiment. With suitable values of the parameters, we obtain giant voltage-induced expansion of area by 1692%, far beyond the largest value reported in the literature.
Electromechanical Stability Of Dielectric Elastomer Using Electric Energy Density Function With Variable Dielectric Constant

Abstract:Dielectric elastomer(DE) is a kind of promising material bearing excellent activate properties including large deformations (up to 380%), high energy densities (up to 3.4 J/g), high efficiency, high responsive speed, good reliability and durability. Thus the DE actuator, sensors and energy harvester is widely used in the field of aeronautics and smart bionics. When an electric field is applied on the compliant electrodes of the dielectric elastomers, the polymer shrinks along the electric field and expands in the transverse plane. In consequence, the electric field becomes higher. This kind of positive feedback may cause the elastomer to thin down, resulting in an electromechanical stability. An analysis on the electromechanical stability of dielectric elastomer using arbitrary free-energy function with constant dielectric constant has been presented in Suo’s papers. In many research on the electromechanical stability analysis of DE actuator, DE’s dielectric constant is assumed to be a constant. This is only the truth if the dielectric elastomer undergoing limited deformation. Actually, a typical dielectric elastomer is a kind of crosslinked polymer. The structural symmetry of the macromolecular, the crosslinking degree, along with the tensile deformation can affect the dielectric permittivity enormously. For dielectric elastomers with higher crosslinking degree, or higher degree of molecular structural symmetry, its permittivity is relatively low. In addition, stretching can guide the macromolecule to be arranged in order, this can increase the intermolecular forces and reduce the activities of polar group, as a results, the dielectric constant will decrease. However, if the crosslinking degree is low and the deformation is well below the extension limit, the molecular units in the polymers can be polarized as freely as in a polymeric liquid. In this case the corresponding permittivity is unaffected by the deformation. Recent experimental research results also proved that the dielectric permittivity of dielectric elastomer changed while undergoing large deformation. According to Pelrine, the dielectric constant of the DE film is variable and it is a function of the area increase ratio which depends on stretch ratio. In this paper, approach for the electromechanical stability of a dielectric elastomer having variable dielectric constant is developed. The critical breakdown electric field is obtained. Simulation results proved that the prestretching process can enhance remarkably the electromechanical stability of dielectric elastomer. These results agree well with the experimental data and can be used as guidances in the design and fabrication of dielectric elastomer actuators.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomers (DEs) respond to applied electric voltage with a surprisingly large deformation, showing a promising capability to generate actuation in mimicking natural muscles. A theoretical foundation of the mechanics of DEs is of crucial importance in designing DE-based structures and devices. In this review, we survey some recent theoretical and numerical efforts in exploring several aspects of electroactive materials, with emphases on the governing equations of electromechanical coupling, constitutive laws, viscoelastic behaviors, electromechanical instability as well as actuation applications. An overview of analytical models is provided based on the representative approach of non-equilibrium thermodynamics, with computational analyses being required in more generalized situations such as irregular shape, complex configuration, and time-dependent deformation. Theoretical efforts have been devoted to enhancing the working limits of DE actuators by avoiding electromechanical instability as well as electric breakdown, and pre-strains are shown to effectively avoid the two failure modes. These studies lay a solid foundation to facilitate the use of DE materials, structures, and devices in a wide range of applications such as biomedical devices, adaptive systems, robotics, energy harvesting, etc.

Abstract:Far greater voltage-actuated deformation is achievable for a dielectric elastomer under equal-biaxial dead load than under rigid constraint usually employed. Areal strains of 488% are demonstrated. The dead load suppresses electric breakdown, enabling the elastomer to survive the snap-through electromechanical instability. The breakdown voltage is found to increase with the voltage ramp rate. A nonlinear model for viscoelastic dielectric elastomers is developed and shown to be consistent with the experimental observations.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomer membrane has the ability of shrinking the thickness and expanding surface area when a voltage is applied through its thickness. Dielectric elastomer has been widely studied and used as dielectric elastomer actuator (DEA), dielectric elastomer generator (DEG) and dielectric elastomer sensor (DES). We study the behavior of several DEAs connected in series and parallel, and find that the different connecting models can achieve different responses of the DEAs. DEAs connected in series can enhance the actuation, while DEA connected in parallel can enhance the actuation force. In our experiment, DEAs connected in series and parallel are loaded in actuation direction under a dead load providing pre-stretch. We discuss the results of the experiments and give the conclusions.

Abstract:Electronic systems that offer elastic mechanical responses to high strain deformations are of growing interest, due to their ability to enable new electrical, optical and biomedical devices and other applications whose requirements are impossible to satisfy with conventional wafer-based technologies or even with those that offer simple bendability. This paper describes materials and mechanical design strategies for classes of electronic circuits that offer extremely high flexibility and stretchability over large area, enabling them to accommodate even demanding deformation modes, such as twisting and linear stretching to ‘rubber-band’ levels of strain over 100%. The use of printed single crystalline silicon nanomaterials for the semiconductor provides performance in flexible and stretchable complementary metal-oxide-semiconductor (CMOS) integrated circuits approaching that of conventional devices with comparable feature sizes formed on silicon wafers. Comprehensive theoretical studies of the mechanics reveal the way in which the structural designs enable these extreme mechanical properties without fracturing the intrinsically brittle active materials or even inducing significant changes in their electrical properties. The results, as demonstrated through electrical measurements of arrays of transistors, CMOS inverters, ring oscillators and differential amplifiers, suggest a valuable route to high performance stretchable electronics that can be integrated with nearly arbitrary substrates. We show examples ranging from plastic and rubber, to vinyl, leather and paper, with capability for large area coverage.

This article reviews the mechanics of stretchable inorganic materials on compliant substrates. Specifically, three forms of stretchable structures are reviewed. The first one is stretchable ribbon, which provides one-dimensional stretchability. The second is stretchable nanomembranes, which can be stretched in all directions. The last is a noncoplanar mesh design, which has the advantage of providing large stretchability up to and exceeding 100%. Mechanics models and their comparison to experiment are reviewed for these three cases. Such models provide design guidelines for stretchable electronics.

Abstract:The performance of dielectric elastomer (DE) transducers is significantly affected by viscoelastic relaxation-induced electromechanical dissipations. This paper presents an experimental study to obtain the rate dependent stress-stretch relation of DE membranes (VHB™9473) subjected to pure shear like loading and electric loading simultaneously. Stretching rate dependent behavior is observed. The results also show that the tensile force decreases as the voltage increases. The observations are compared with predictions by a viscoelastic model of DE. This experiment may be used for further studies of dynamic electromechanical coupling properties of DEs.

Abstract:O'Neill et al., characterized, computationally and experimentally, the electromechanical response of two distinct dielectric elastomer architectures. While undergoing mechanical deformation, the onset of mechanical instability in the architectures results in their subsequent matrix densification and shift in effective permittivity. These porous, strain‐tunable dielectric architectures offer adaptive resonance properties as substrates in flexible hybrid electronics. Flexible hybrid electronic (FHE) materials and devices exploit the interaction of mechanical and electromagnetic properties to operate in new form factors and loading environments, which are key for advancing wearable sensors, flexible antennas, and soft robotic skin technologies. Dielectric elastomer (DE) architectures offer a novel substrate material for this application space as they are a class of strain‐tolerant and programmable metamaterials that derive their mechanical and dielectric properties from their architecture. Due to their hyperelasticity, dielectric elastomers can leverage reversible finite deformation to physically reconfigure their internal architecture to repeatedly tune their material behavior. Here a combined computational and experimental study of two dielectric elastomer architectures, based on square and hexagonal unit cell periodicities are presented. A shift in effective permittivity is observed due to the relative increase in matrix volume and the rearrangement of the electric field distribution in the cells. Additive fabrication allows rapid unit cell geometry customization for tuning the electromechanical response of the architectures. Effective permittivity shifts Δε2 > 0.7 under compressive strains of 35% are observed. The practical utility of this strain‐tunable permittivity is demonstrated in a microstrip patch antenna, which exhibits shifts in resonance frequency greater than 110 MHz when the dielectric elastomer substrate is compressed.

Abstract:In this study, elastomer composites, including silicone rubber and barium titanate, were fabricated by mechanical mixing, a low-cost, fast, and easy technique to produce highly dielectric materials. The resulting composites were investigated in terms of their dielectric and mechanical properties in terms of filler percentage in the mixture. Dielectric permittivity measurements were taken using the microwave regime, and uniaxial tensile tests were carried out for the study of the materials' mechanical properties, while combined experiments were also carried out to investigate potential correlations between them. The experimental results show that barium titanate inclusions in silicone matrix significantly improve the dielectric constant while reducing the mechanical properties of composites. In addition, combined experiments show that the composites exhibit a nearly stable dielectric profile under mechanical deformations. Consequently, mechanically mixed barium titanate–silicone elastomer composites could potentially become a cost-effective alternative in the extensive market for insulating materials and flexible electronics.

Abstract:Recent advances in mechanics and materials provide routes to develop stretchable electronics that offer performance of conventional wafer-based devices but with the ability to be deformed to arbitrary shape. Many new applications become possible ranging from electronic eye cameras to wearable electronics, to bio-integrated therapeutic devices. This paper reviews mechanics of stretchable electronics in terms of two main forms of stretchable designs. One is wavy design, which can provide one-dimensional stretchability. The other is island-bridge design, which can be stretched in all directions. Mechanics models and their comparisons to experiments and finite element simulations are reviewed for these two designs. The results provide design guidelines for the development of stretchable electronics.
Programmable, UV-Printable Dielectric Elastomers Actuate at Low Voltage without Prestretch and Supporting Frames

Abstract:Dielectric elastomers are soft and perfect insulator polymers able to produce large strains with high energy density under the effect of applied high voltage. However, their use in practical applications is hindered by the need for high voltage to actuate. Also, they need prestretching between rigid frames to produce out-of-plane shape changes, which may reduce their lifetime. Here, we synthesized a set of elastomers with high permittivity (from 20 to reach 60 at 103 Hz), controllable thermal properties (Tg vary from −15 to −50 °C), and good mechanical properties (Young's modulus values between 0.48 and 0.2 MPa at 20% strain). Due to the high permittivity, an actuator made of the material was able to respond to a low voltage of 700 V and produce a 6.5% area strain for more than 10 000 cycles. Moreover, the elastomers were found to produce giant free-end bending displacements with prespecified bending direction (bend to the side of the positive electrode) under a low electric field, which we called programmable dielectric elastomers (PDE). Besides the aforementioned characteristics and performance, the formulated elastomers are suitable for UV-based three-dimensional (3D) printing. Abstract:All commercial forms of electronic/optoelectronic technologies use planar, rigid substrates. Device possibilities that exploit bio‐inspired designs or require intimate integration with the human body demand curvilinear shapes and/or elastic responses to large strain deformations. This article reviews progress in research designed to accomplish these outcomes with established, high‐performance inorganic electronic materials and modest modifications to conventional, planar processing techniques. We outline the most well developed strategies and illustrate their use in demonstrator devices that exploit unique combinations of shape, mechanical properties and electronic performance. We conclude with an outlook on the challenges and opportunities for this emerging area of materials science and engineering.

Abstract:Pre-stretch affects the dynamic performance of the dielectric elastomers (DEs). In this paper, the effects of pre stretch on the nonlinear viscoelastic oscillation and stability of the DE membrane actuator are investigated. Analytical model based on Euler-Lagrange method and homogeneity assumption is developed to describe the complex dynamic behaviour of the viscoelastic DE membrane actuator under equibiaxial and non-equibiaxial pre-stretches, respectively. Numerical calculations are applied to predict dynamic responses of the DE membrane actuator with different initial stretch ratios. The results indicate that the viscoelastic creep of the DE membrane actuator can be eliminated by specific initial stretch ratio. The phase paths and Poincare maps reveal that proper pre-stretch helps to improve the stability of the DE membrane actuator. This work provides guidance for the structure design, stability control, and optimization of soft actuators and soft robots.

Abstract:Dielectric elastomer (DE) transducers usually undergo large deformation, as well as possess hyperelastic and viscoelastic behaviors. This paper presents an experimental study of rupture behavior of acrylic DE (3M-VHB 9473) membranes with various stretching rates, specimen dimensions and initial flaw sizes. The force-displacement curves, crack propagation behaviors of specimens subjected to pure-shear loading are investigated experimentally. It is observed that different stretching rate and initial flaw size drastically affect the critical rupture force and crack propagating velocity. Finite element analysis is carried out to calculate the strain distribution and the J integral.

Abstract:Elastomers are widely used in electronics and electrical devices, either as insulators or transducers. The insulation and actuation performance of elastomers are highly susceptible to their dielectric strength. Among the factors that influence the dielectric strength of elastomers, material viscoelasticity is an important factor that needs further investigation. Since the material viscoelasticity is often characterized by rate-dependent behaviors, we present two different sample configurations to experimentally examine the electrical and mechanical rate dependence of the dielectric strength of VHB 4905 elastomers. At pre-stretch ratio of 4, the improvement of the dielectric strength is about 30% from voltage ramp of 50 V/s to 800 V/s. Particularly, with an in-house biaxial test platform, the effect of the stretching rate on the dielectric strength is examined for the first time. The improvement of the dielectric strength is about 35% from stretching rate of 0.1 mm/s to 5 mm/s. Moreover, a dielectric strength predictor based on configurational stress is adopted to describe the experimental data. According to the predictor, the loading rate affects the dielectric strength of the elastomer mainly by influencing the evolution of the inelastic deformation.

Abstract:In the past decade, the development of theory has deeply revealed the electromechanical coupling deformation mechanism of dielectric elastomer (DE). Many theoretical predictions on highly nonlinear deformation of dielectric elastomer have been verified by experiments. With the guidance of theory, the voltage-induced areal strain of dielectric elastomer has been increased from 100% in the pioneering work to the current record of 2200% and the energy density of a dielectric elastomer generator has reached 780 mJ/g. Much more developments have been realized on the applications of DE transducers in the fields of bioinspired artificial muscles, soft robotics, tunable lenses, and haptic interfaces. However, there is a gap between theory and application. Great potentials of developing DE transducers with the aid of a systematic theory have yet to be explored. This paper reviews the recent advances in the theory of dielectric elastomer and demonstrates some examples of using theory to design DE transducers. 9 boundary value problems of DE structures are analyzed from the simplest homogeneous deformation of a flat membrane to the highly complex bifurcations of a tube. Comparisons between theory and experiment are discussed. The viscous effect and the vibration of dielectric elastomer are reviewed. The developments of DE transducers and new dielectric materials are also reviewed. We summarize the performance of existing DE transducers with different configurations and make some discussions. It is hoped that the mechanics of DE structures can help to develop high-performance DE transducers in the future.

Abstract:Stretchable electronic devices that exploit inorganic materials are attractive due to their combination of high performance with mechanical deformability, particularly for applications in biomedical devices that require intimate integration with human body. Several mechanics and materials schemes have been devised for this type of technology, many of which exploit deformable interconnects. When such interconnects are fully bonded to the substrate and/or encapsulated in a solid material, useful but modest levels of deformation (<30-40%) are possible, with reversible and repeatable mechanics. Here, the use of prestrain in the substrate is introduced, together with interconnects in narrow, serpentine shapes, to yield significantly enhanced (more than two times) stretchability, to more than 100%. Fracture and cyclic fatigue testing on structures formed with and without prestrain quantitatively demonstrate the possible enhancements. Finite element analyses (FEA) illustrates the effects of various material and geometric parameters. A drastic decrease in the elastic stretchability is observed with increasing metal thickness, due to changes in the buckling mode, that is, from local wrinkling at small thicknesses to absence of such wrinkling at large thicknesses, as revealed by experiment. An analytic model quantitatively predicts the wavelength of this wrinkling, and explains the thickness dependence of the buckling behaviors.
An enhanced flexoelectric dielectric elastomer actuator with stretchable electret

Abstract:Abstract Actuation has been applied with dielectric elastomers (DE) in soft robotics and bio-mimic devices due to their ultra-large deformation range, easy patterning, light weight, and they are highly expected for high electro-mechanical efficiency and low stimulating power. Flexoelectricity describes the strain gradient-induced electric polarization, which is strongly related to geometry and deformation ranges. The electro-mechanical coupling effect with flexoelectricity in elastomeric materials are then highly expected. In this work, elastic modulus gradient of a DE actuator is designed for bending motion by flexoelectricity, and electric charge is inserted and immobilized inside the material to further enhance the electro-mechanical capability. Elastic modulus gradient is designed, and electric charges are immobilized to enlarge the electro-mechanical coupling efficiencies of this flexoelectric actuator. The bending angle of the actuator is inversely proportional to the cube of general thickness of actuator, and the immobilized electric charge extensively enlarged the actuation capability. With elastic modulus gradient and electret, the actuating bending angle is enlarged with low stimulating voltage. This work provides an enhanced flexoelectric actuating method with material and mechanical design, and highlights low-voltage actuating approach with piezoelectric-like effect of stretchable electrets.
