Abstract:The Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory (AST/RO) is a 1.7-meter diameter offset Gregorian instrument located at the NSF Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station. This site is exceptionally dry and cold, providing opportunities for Terahertz observations from the ground. Preliminary analysis of recent site testing results shows that the zenith transparency of the 1.5 THz atmospheric window at South Pole frequently exceeds 10% during the Austral winter. Routine observations at 810 GHz have been conducted over the past two years, resulting in large-scale maps of the Galactic Center region and measurements of the (13)C line in molecular clouds. During the next two years, the observatory plans to support two Terahertz instruments: 1) TREND (Terahertz Receiver with Niobium Nitride Device--K. S. Yngvesson, University of Massachusetts, P. I.), and 2) SPIFI (South Pole Imaging Fabry-Perot Interferometer--G. J. Stacey, Cornell University, P. I.). AST/RO could be used in future as an observational test bed for additional prototype Terahertz instruments. Abstract:The South Pole Telescope (SPT) is a 10 m diameter, wide-field, offset Gregorian telescope with a 966-pixel, multi-color, millimeter-wave, bolometer camera. It is located at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole station in Antarctica. The design of the SPT emphasizes careful control of spillover and scattering, to minimize noise and false signals due to ground pickup. The key initial project is a large-area survey at wavelengths of 3, 2 and 1.3 mm, to detect clusters of galaxies via the Sunyaev-Zeldovich effect and to measure the small-scale angular power spectrum of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The data will be used to characterize the primordial matter power spectrum and to place constraints on the equation of state of dark energy. A second-generation camera will measure the polarization of the CMB, potentially leading to constraints on the neutrino mass and the energy scale of inflation.

Millimeter and Submillimeter Observations from the South Pole

Abstract:During the past decade, a year-round observatory has been established at the geographic South Pole by the Center for Astrophysical Research in Antarctica (CARA). CARA has fielded several millimeter- and submillimeter-wave instruments: AST/RO (the Antarctic Submillimeter Telescope and Remote Observatory, a 1.7-m telescope outfitted with a variety of receivers at frequencies from 230 GHz to 810 GHz, including PoleSTAR, a heterodyne spectrometer array), Python (a degree-scale CMB telescope), Viper (a 2-m telescope which has been outfitted with SPARO, a submillimeter-wave bolometric array polarimeter, ACBAR, a multi-channel CMB instrument, and Dos Equis, a HEMT polarimeter), and DASI (the Degree-Angular Scale Interferometer). These instruments have obtained significant results in studies of the interstellar medium and observational cosmology, including detections of the 1 degree acoustic peak in the CMB and the Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect. The South Pole environment is unique among observatory sites for unusually low wind speeds, low absolute humidity, and the consistent clarity of the submillimeter sky. The atmosphere is dessicated by cold: at the South Pole's average annual temperature of -49 C, the partial pressure of saturated water vapor is only 1.2% of what it is at 0 C. The low water vapor levels result in exceptionally low values of sky noise. This is crucial for large-scale observations of faint cosmological sources---for such observations the South Pole is unsurpassed.

Abstract:Open-access telescopes of all apertures are needed to operate a competitive and efficient national science program. While larger facilities contribute light-gathering power and angular resolution, smaller ones dominate for field of view, time-resolution, and especially, total available observing time, thereby enabling our entire, diversely-expert community. Smaller aperture telescopes therefore play a critical and indispensable role in advancing science. Thus, the divestment of NSF support for modest-aperture (1 - 4 m) public telescopes poses a serious threat to U.S. scientific leadership, which is compounded by the unknown consequences of the shift from observations driven by individual investigators to survey-driven science. Given the much higher cost efficiency and dramatic science returns for investments in modest aperture telescopes, it is hard to justify funding only the most expensive facilities. We therefore urge the Astro2020 panel to explicitly make the case for modest aperture facilities, and to recommend enhancing this funding stream to support and grow this critical component of the OIR System. Further study is urgently needed to prioritize the numerous exciting potential capabilities of smaller facilities,and to establish sustainable, long-term planning for the System.

Abstract:The Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) is a very-long-baseline interferometry (VLBI) experiment that aims to observe supermassive black holes with an angular resolution that is comparable to the event horizon scale. The South Pole occupies an important position in the array, greatly increasing its north-south extent and therefore its resolution. The South Pole Telescope (SPT) is a 10-meter diameter, millimeter-wavelength telescope equipped for bolometric observations of the cosmic microwave background. To enable VLBI observations with the SPT we have constructed a coherent signal chain suitable for the South Pole environment. The dual-frequency receiver incorporates state-of-the-art SIS mixers and is installed in the SPT receiver cabin. The VLBI signal chain also includes a recording system and reference frequency generator tied to a hydrogen maser. Here we describe the SPT VLBI system design in detail and present both the lab measurements and on-sky results.

Abstract:South Pole Station offers a unique combination of high, dry, stable conditions and well-developed support facilities. Over the past 20 years, a sequence of increasingly sophisticated CMB experiments at Pole have built on the experience of early pioneering efforts, producing a number of landmark contributions to the field. Telescopes at the South Pole were among the first to make repeated detections of degree-scale CMB temperature anisotropy and to map out the harmonic structure of its acoustic peaks. More recent achievements include the first detection of polarization of the CMB and the most precise measurements of the temperature power spectrum at small angular scales. New CMB telescopes at the South Pole are now making ultra-deep observations of the large-scale polarization of the CMB and of its secondary temperature anisotropies on arcminute scales. These two observing goals represent the current frontiers of CMB research, focused on constraining Inflation and the nature of Dark Energy. The South Pole now hosts an array of CMB observing platforms covering a wide range of angular scales and supporting very long integration times on the cleanest sky available, and thus should play an increasing role in pushing these frontiers of CMB research.

Abstract:Antarctica provides a unique environment for astronomy. The cold, dry and stable air found above the high plateau, as well as the pure ice below, offers new opportunities across the photon & particle spectrum. The summits of the plateau provide the best seeing conditions, the darkest skies and the most transparent atmosphere of any earth-based observing site. Astronomical activities are now underway at four plateau sites: the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Station, Concordia Station at Dome C, Kunlun Station at Dome A and Fuji Station at Dome F, in addition to long duration ballooning from the coastal station of McMurdo. Astronomy conducted includes optical, IR, THz & sub-mm, measurements of the CMBR, solar, as well as high energy astrophysics involving measurement of cosmic rays, gamma rays and neutrinos. Antarctica is also the richest source of meteorites on our planet. An extensive range of site testing measurements have been made over the high plateau. We summarise the facets of Antarctica that are driving developments in astronomy, and review the results of the site testing experiments undertaken to quantify those characteristics of the plateau relevant for it pursuit. We outline the historical development of the astronomy on the continent, and then review the principal scientific results to have emerged over the past three decades of activity in the discipline. We discuss how science is conducted in Antarctica, and in particular the difficulties, as well as the advantages, faced by astronomers seeking to bring their experiments there. We also review some of the political issues that will be encountered, both at national and international level. Finally, we discuss where Antarctic astronomy may be heading in the coming decade, in particular plans for IR & THz astronomy, including new facilities being considered for these wavebands at high plateau stations.

Abstract:The geographic South Pole provides unique opportunities to study cosmic particles in the Southern Hemisphere. It represents an optimal location to deploy large-scale neutrino telescopes in the deep Antarctic ice, such as AMANDA or IceCube. In both cases, the presence of an array, constructed to observe extensive air showers, enables hybrid measurements of cosmic rays. While additional neutron monitors can provide information on solar cosmic rays, large detector arrays, like SPASE or IceTop, allow for precise measurements of cosmic rays with energies above several $100\,\rm{TeV}$. In coincidence with the signals recorded in the deep ice, which are mostly due to the high-energy muons produced in air showers, this hybrid detector setup provides important information about the nature of cosmic rays.

Abstract:ABSTRACT The Antarctic Plateau is considered to be the best ground-based astronomical site on Earth. Compared with other middle latitude observatories, the telescopes located in Antarctica have unique advantages in seeing a large fraction of clear nights, continuous observing window in the polar night, and so on. China has operated several generations of telescopes in Antarctica, but has not yet achieved multicolour simultaneous observation with tracking. Multi-band Survey Telescope (MST) is the first multicolour simultaneous survey telescope in Antarctica. It adopts a Newtonian telescope structure which is different from other Antarctic telescopes and is matched with a new alignment scheme suitable for the harsh environment of Antarctica. In addition, MST is equipped with a defrosting indium tin oxide (ITO) window and a high-precision equatorial mount. This paper introduces the optical design, mechanical structure, and analysis of the actual operation of MST in Antarctica. Since March 2022, MST has been carrying out the observation normally in Zhongshan Station, and the operation of MST has provided a new experience for the follow-up design and installation of Antarctic telescopes. We plan to further optimize the design and manufacture of MST, and develop it as a standard model of small-aperture Antarctic telescopes for space debris observations and time-domain surveys.

Abstract:The 21cm line refers to a forbidden transition in neutral hydrogen associated with alignment of spins of the proton and electron. It is a very low energy transition that is emitted whenever there is neutral hydrogen in the Universe. Since baryons are mostly (~75%) hydrogen, one can in principle detect this emission throughout much of the history of the Universe. The dominant emission mechanism is different across cosmic ages. Before the photons decouple from matter, hydrogen is in an ionized state and does not emit in 21cm. After recombination and during the Dark Ages, at z ~ 30-1000, the 21cm emission is associated with density fluctuations in the neutral hydrogen medium. After the first stars turn on and galaxies begin to form, the 21cm emission traces bubbles of ionized hydrogen in the sea of the neutral medium. This epoch, spanning z ~ 6-30, is often referred to as cosmic dawn and the Epoch of Reionization (EoR). At redshifts below z<6, the intergalactic medium is largely ionized, but pockets of self-shielded neutral gas form in dense galactic environments and 21cm emission traces the distribution of galaxies. The vastly different emission mechanisms allow us to probe very different physics at different redshifts, corresponding to different observational frequencies. The instrumental challenges, namely building very sensitive and exquisitely calibrated radio telescopes, however, share many commonalities across frequency bands. The potential of the 21cm probe has been recognized by the Decadal Survey of Astronomy & Astrophysics, whose Panel on Cosmology identified the Dark Ages as its sole discovery area. We argue that HEP should recognize the potential of 21cm as a probe of fundamental physics across many axes and invest in the technology development that will enable full exploitation of this rich technique.

Abstract:Due to its extremely cold, dry, tenuous, and stable atmosphere, the Antarctica plateau is widely considered to be an excellent astronomical site. The long periods of uninterrupted darkness at polar sites such as Dome A provide a possibility of continuous observation for more than 3 months, which is quite suitable for time-domain astronomy. The second Antarctic Survey Telescope (AST3-2), the largest optical telescope in Antarctica so far, is a 0.5m entrance diameter large field of view optical imaging telescope which was deployed to Dome A, Antarctic in January 2015. It was used to study variable objects, such as supernova explosions and the afterglow of gamma-ray bursts, and to search for extrasolar planets. For the remoteness of the Antarctic plateau, it is designed to observe autonomously and operate remotely via satellite communication. With only 20 days attending maintenance annually, it has experienced 3 winters. It has observed for 3 months in 2015 and 4 months in 2016. In the third year of 2017, the observing time of AST3-2 has covered all the polar night from March to September, the data reached to nearly 30TB with more than 200,000 exposures for searching supernovas and exoplanets. AST3-2 was also the only one telescope in the Antarctic plate that joined the optical observations of LIGO GW170817.

Abstract:The South Pole Telescope (SPT) has nearly completed a 2500-square-degree survey of the southern sky in three frequency bands. Here we present the first public release of SPT maps and associated data products. We present arcminute-resolution maps at 150 GHz and 220 GHz of an approximately 95-square-degree field centered at R.A. 82.7 degrees, decl. -55 degrees. The field was observed to a depth of approximately 17 micro-K arcmin at 150 GHz and 41 micro-K arcmin at 220 GHz during the 2008 austral winter season. Two variations on map filtering and map projection are presented, one tailored for producing catalogs of galaxy clusters detected through their Sunyaev-Zel'dovich effect signature and one tailored for producing catalogs of emissive sources. We describe the data processing pipeline, and we present instrument response functions, filter transfer functions, and map noise properties. All data products described in this paper are available for download at http://pole.uchicago.edu/public/data/maps/ra5h30dec-55 and from the NASA Legacy Archive for Microwave Background Data Analysis server. This is the first step in the eventual release of data from the full 2500-square-degree SPT survey.

Abstract:The South Pole Telescope (SPT) is a millimeter-wavelength telescope designed for high-precision measurements of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). The SPT measures both the temperature and polarization of the CMB with a large aperture, resulting in high resolution maps sensitive to signals across a wide range of angular scales on the sky. With these data, the SPT has the potential to make a broad range of cosmological measurements. These include constraining the effect of massive neutrinos on large-scale structure formation as well as cleaning galactic and cosmological foregrounds from CMB polarization data in future searches for inflationary gravitational waves. The SPT began observing in January 2017 with a new receiver (SPT-3G) containing similar to 16,000 polarization-sensitive transition-edge sensor bolometers. Several key technology developments have enabled this large-format focal plane, including advances in detectors, readout electronics, and large millimeter-wavelength optics. We discuss the implementation of these technologies in the SPT-3G receiver as well as the challenges they presented. In late 2017 the implementations of all three of these technologies were modified to optimize total performance. Here, we present the current instrument status of the SPT-3G receiver.

Abstract:Over a decade of site testing and operation of submillimeter telescopes has sh own that the high Antarctic Plateau (South Pole) and Chilean Atacama desert (Chajnantor) are e xceptional gr ound-based site s for submillimeter and terahertz astronomy. The highest sites at both locations (Dome A and the Ch ajnantor and Sairecabur summits) show great promise in yielding even more favorable conditions. To test the condi tions at Do me A, we have deployed Pre-HEAT, a 20 cm aperture submillim eter-wave telescope with a 660 GHz (450 micron) Schottky diode heterodyne re ceiver and digital F FT spe ctrometer for the Plateau Obse rvatory (P LATO) de veloped by the Unive rsity of New South Wales. In January 2008 it was deploy ed to Dome A, the summit of the Antarctic plateau, as part of a scientific tr averse le d by the Polar Re search Institute of China. Dome A may be one o f the best sites in the w orld for ground based Te rahertz astronomy, b ased on t he exceptionally cold, dr y and stable c onditions which pr evail there. Pr e-HEAT is meas uring the 450 micron sky opacity at Dome A and mapping the Galactic Plane in the 13 CO J=6-5 line, constituting the first s ubmillimeter measurements from Dome A. It is field-testing ma ny of th e key technologies for its name sake, a suc cessor mission c alled HEAT: the High Elevation An tarctic Terah ertz teles cope. Exc iting p rospects for submillimeter astronomy f rom Dome A and the status of Pre-HEAT will be presented.

Abstract:Gravitational-wave astronomy has revolutionized humanity's view of the universe, a revolution driven by observations that no other field can make. This white paper describes an observatory that builds on decades of investment by the National Science Foundation and that will drive discovery for decades to come: Cosmic Explorer. Major discoveries in astronomy are driven by three related improvements: better sensitivity, higher precision, and opening new observational windows. Cosmic Explorer promises all three and will deliver an order-of-magnitude greater sensitivity than LIGO. Cosmic Explorer will push the gravitational-wave frontier to almost the edge of the observable universe using technologies that have been proven by LIGO during its development. With the unprecedented sensitivity that only a new facility can deliver, Cosmic Explorer will make discoveries that cannot yet be anticipated, especially since gravitational waves are both synergistic with electromagnetic observations and can reach into regions of the universe that electromagnetic observations cannot explore. With Cosmic Explorer, scientists can use the universe as a laboratory to test the laws of physics and study the nature of matter. Cosmic Explorer allows the United States to continue its leading role in gravitational-wave science and the international network of next-generation observatories. With its extraordinary discovery potential, Cosmic Explorer will deliver revolutionary observations across astronomy, physics, and cosmology including: Black Holes and Neutron Stars Throughout Cosmic Time, Multi-Messenger Astrophysics and Dynamics of Dense Matter, New Probes of Extreme Astrophysics, Fundamental Physics and Precision Cosmology, Dark Matter and the Early Universe.

Abstract:Dome A in Antarctica has been demonstrated to be the best site on earth for optical, infrared, and terahertz astronomical observations by more and more evidence, such as excellent free-atmosphere seeing, extremely low perceptible water vapor, low sky background, and continuous dark time, etc. In this review paper, we present a complete picture of the development of astronomy at Dome A from the very beginning, review recent progress in time-domain astronomy, demonstrate exciting results of the site testing, and address the challenges in instrumentation. Currently proposed projects are briefly discussed.

Abstract:The installation and operation of a telescope in Antarctica represent particular challenges, in particular the requirement to operate at extremely cold temperatures, to cope with rapid temperature fluctuations and to prevent frosting. Heating of electronic subsystems is a necessity, but solutions must be found to avoid the turbulence induced by temperature fluctua- tions on the optical paths. ASTEP 400 is a 40 cm Newton telescope installed at the Concordia station, Dome C since 2010 for photometric observations of fields of stars and their exoplanets. While the telescope is designed to spread star light on several pixels to maximize photometric stability, we show that it is nonetheless sensitive to the extreme variations of the seeing at the ground level (between about 0.1 and 5 arcsec) and to temperature fluctuations between --30 degrees C and --80 degrees C. We analyze both day-time and night-time observations and obtain the magnitude of the seeing caused by the mirrors, dome and camera. The most important effect arises from the heating of the primary mirror which gives rise to a mirror seeing of 0.23 arcsec K--1 . We propose solutions to mitigate these effects.
