Abstract:WHEN NASA DECIDED in the 1970s that the Hubble Space Telescope should be serviceable in space, the engineering challenges must have seemed nearly insurmountable. How could a machine that complex and delicate be repaired by astronauts wearing 130-kilogram suits with thick gloves? ¶ In the end, spacewalkers not only fixed the telescope, they regularly remade it. ¶ That was possible because Hubble is toroidal-its major systems laid out in wedge-shaped equipment bays that astronauts could open from the outside. A series of maintenance workstations on Hubble's outer surface ensured astronauts could have ready access to crucial telescope parts. ¶ On five space-shuttle servicing missions between 1993 and 2009, 16 spacewalkers replaced every major component except the telescope's mirrors and outer skin. They increased its electrical supply by 20 percent. And they tripled its ability to concentrate and sense light, job No.1 of any telescope. ¶ The orbital observatory was built to last 15 years in space. But with updates, it has operated for more than 30-a history of reinvention to make any engineering team proud. "Twice the lifetime," says astronaut Kathryn Sullivan, who flew on Hubble's 1990 launch mission. "Just try finding something else that has improved with age in space. I dare you."

Abstract:In this paper, we present a simple but compelling argument, focusing on galaxy science, for preserving the main imagers and operational modes of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) for as long as is technically feasible. While star-formation started at redshifts z$\gtrsim$10$-$13, when the universe was less than 300$-$500 Myr old, the CSFH did not peak until z$\simeq$1.9, and has steadily declined since that time. Hence, at least half of all stars in the universe formed in the era where HST provides its unique rest-frame UV view of unobscured young, massive stars tracing cosmic star-formation. By rendering a subset of the 556.3 hours of available HST images in 12 filters of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) in an appropriate mix of colors, we illustrate the unique capabilities of HST for galaxy science emphasizing that rest-frame UV$-$optical wavelength range. We then contrast this with the 52.7 publicly available hours of JWST/NIRCam images in 8 filters of the same HUDF area from the JADES project, rendering these at the redder near-IR wavelengths to illustrate the unique capabilities of JWST to detect older stellar populations at higher redshifts, as well as very dusty stellar populations and Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). HST uniquely probes (unobscured) young, hot, massive stars in galaxies, while JWST reveals more advanced stages of older stellar populations, as well as relatively short-lived phases where galaxies produce and shed a lot of dust from intense star-formation, and the very high redshift universe (z$\gtrsim$10$-$11) not accessible by HST. We conclude that HST and JWST are highly complementary facilities that took decades to build to ensure decades of operation. To maximize return on investment on both HST and JWST, ways will need to be found to operate HST imaging instruments in all relevant modes for as long as possible into the JWST mission.

The Empirical Limits of Gyrochronology

Abstract:The promise of gyrochronology is that given a star's rotation period and mass, its age can be inferred. The reality of gyrochronology is complicated by effects other than ordinary magnetized braking that alter stellar rotation periods. In this work, we present an interpolation-based gyrochronology framework that reproduces the time- and mass-dependent spin-down rates implied by the latest open cluster data, while also matching the rate at which the dispersion in initial stellar rotation periods decreases as stars age. We validate our technique for stars with temperatures of 3800-6200 K and ages of 0.08-2.6 gigayears (Gyr), and use it to reexamine the empirical limits of gyrochronology. In line with previous work, we find that the uncertainty floor varies strongly with both stellar mass and age. For Sun-like stars (5800 K), the statistical age uncertainties improve monotonically from $\pm$38% at 0.2 Gyr to $\pm12$% at 2 Gyr, and are caused by the empirical scatter of the cluster rotation sequences combined with the rate of stellar spin-down. For low-mass K-dwarfs (4200 K), the posteriors are highly asymmetric due to stalled spin-down, and $\pm$1$\sigma$ age uncertainties vary non-monotonically between 10% and 50% over the first few gigayears. High-mass K-dwarfs (5000 K) older than 1.5 Gyr yield the most precise ages, with limiting uncertainties currently set by possible changes in the spin-down rate (12% systematic), the calibration of the absolute age scale (8% systematic), and the width of the slow sequence (4% statistical). Abstract:NASA's Great Observatories have opened up the electromagnetic spectrum from space, providing sustained access to wavelengths not accessible from the ground. Together, Hubble, Compton, Chandra, and Spitzer have provided the scientific community with an agile and powerful suite of telescopes with which to attack broad scientific questions, and react to a rapidly changing scientific landscape. As the existing Great Observatories age, or are decommissioned, community access to these wavelengths will diminish, with an accompanying loss of scientific capability. This report, commissioned by the NASA Cosmic Origins, Physics of the Cosmos and Exoplanet Exploration Program Analysis Groups (PAGs), analyzes the importance of multi-wavelength observations from space during the epoch of the Great Observatories, providing examples that span a broad range of astrophysical investigations.

Abstract:We advocate for a mission concept study for a space telescope dedicated to solar system science in Earth orbit. Such a study was recommended by the Committee on Astrobiology and Planetary Science (CAPS) report "Getting Ready for the Next Planetary Science Decadal Survey." The Mid-Decadal Review also recommended NASA to assess the role and value of space telescopes for planetary science. The need for high-resolution, UV-Visible capabilities is especially acute for planetary science with the impending end of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST); however, NASA has not funded a planetary telescope concept study, and the need to assess its value remains. Here, we present potential design options that should be explored to inform the decadal survey.

Progress in Direct Measurements of the Hubble Constant

Abstract:One of the most exciting and pressing issues in cosmology today is the discrepancy between some measurements of the local Hubble constant and other values of the expansion rate inferred from the cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation. Resolving these differences holds the potential for the discovery of new physics beyond the standard model of cosmology: Lambda Cold Dark Matter (LCDM), a successful model that has been in place for more than 20 years. Given both the fundamental significance of this outstanding discrepancy, and the many-decades-long effort to increase the accuracy of the extragalactic distance scale, it is critical to demonstrate that the local measurements are convincingly free from residual systematic errors. We review the progress over the past quarter century in measurements of the local value of the Hubble constant, and discuss remaining challenges. Particularly exciting are new data from the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). JWST is delivering high-resolution near-infrared imaging data to both test for and to address directly several of the systematic uncertainties that have historically limited the accuracy of the extragalactic distance scale. We present an overview of our new JWST program to observe Cepheids, TRGB and JAGB stars. For the first galaxy in our program, NGC 7250, the high-resolution JWST images demonstrate that many of the Cepheids observed with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) are significantly crowded by nearby neighbors. Avoiding the more significantly crowded variables, the scatter in the JWST near-infrared (NIR) Cepheid period-luminosity relation is decreased by a factor of two compared to those from HST, illustrating the power of JWST for improvements to local measurements of Ho. Ultimately, these data will either confirm the standard model, or provide robust evidence for the inclusion of additional new physics.

Abstract:Astronomy is not in the list of natural sciences aimed at by the Nobel awards. In spite of that, there were, throughout the 1930s until the early 1950s, effective moves by important scientists to distinguish Hubble with the Prize. A short report on these attempts is made as well as speculation on what would be the citation for the prize in view of the broad range of Hubble's scientific achievements. Within this context, the opportunity is also taken for publicizing the Crafoord Prize which does consider astronomy.

Abstract:The outer solar system provides a unique, quiet vantage point from which to observe the universe around us, where measurements could enable several niche astrophysical science cases that are too difficult to perform near Earth. NASA's New Horizons mission comprises an instrument package that provides imaging capability from ultraviolet (UV) to near-infrared (near-IR) wavelengths with moderate spectral resolution located beyond the orbit of Pluto. A carefully designed survey with New Horizons can optimize the use of expendable propellant and the limited data telemetry bandwidth to allow several measurements, including a detailed understanding of the cosmic extragalactic background light; studies of the local and extragalactic UV background; measurements of the properties of dust and ice in the outer solar system; confirmation and characterization of transiting exoplanets; determinations of the mass of dark objects using gravitational microlensing; and rapid follow-up of transient events. New Horizons is currently in an extended mission designed to focus on Kuiper Belt science that will conclude in 2021. The astrophysics community has a unique, generational opportunity to use this mission for astronomical observation at heliocentric distances beyond 50 au in the next decade. In this paper, we discuss the potential science cases for such an extended mission, and provide an initial assessment of the most important operational requirements and observation strategies it would require. We conclude that New Horizons is capable of transformative science, and that it would make a valuable and unique asset for astrophysical science that is unlikely to be replicated in the near future.

Abstract:The stellar astronomy has always been considered the fundamental source of knowledge about the basic building blocks of the universe - the stars. It has proved correctness of many physical theories - like e.g. the idea of nuclear fusion in stellar cores, the exchange of mass in interacting binaries or models of stellar evolution towards white dwarfs or neutron stars. Despite its well acknowledged importance it seems to be loosing its interestingness for students, for telescope allocation committees at large observatories, as well as for granting agencies. In the domain of big telescopes it has been gradually overtaken by the extra-galactic research and cosmology, surviving however at smaller observatories and among most advanced amateur astronomers. We try to analyse the main obstacles lowering the efficiency of research in contemporary stellar astronomy. We will shortly tackle several problems induced by paradigmatic changes in handling the extraordinary amount of data provided by current instruments as well as by introduction of economical criteria and factory-like management into the modern astronomy. Finally we speculate the reasons of a marginal role of Virtual observatory in contemporary stellar research and give some ideas of possible improvements.

Abstract:The past decade has seen Parkes once again involved in a wide range of space tracking activities that have added to its illustrious legacy. This contribution is a personal recollection of those tracking efforts - both real and celluloid. We begin in a light-hearted vein with some behind-the-scenes views of the popular film, "The DISH", and then turn to more serious contributions; discussing the vital role of the telescope in alleviating the great "traffic jam" at Mars in 2003/04 and salvaging the Doppler Wind Experiment as the Huygens probe descended though the atmosphere of Saturn's largest moon, Titan, in mid-decade. We cap off the decade with a discussion of the search for the missing Apollo 11 slow-scan TV tapes.

Abstract:Las Cumbres Observatory (LCOGT) operates a global network of robotic 0.4, 1.0, and 2.0-meter telescopes to facilitate scientific research and education in time-domain astronomy. LCOGT's flagship educational program, Global Sky Partners (GSP), awards up to 1500 hours per year of telescope time to individuals and organizations that run their own, fully supported, educational programs. The GSP has a presence in 40 countries and 45% of the Partners target under-served, under-represented, and developing world audiences. The degradation and obsolescence of the original 0.4-meter telescope network prompted LCOGT to update the fleet of 10 telescopes to a new system consisting of predominantly off-the-shelf products. New PlaneWave DeltaRho 350 telescopes with Gemini Focuser/Rotators, LCOGT filter wheels, and QHY600 CMOS cameras, complement the original, custom-built mount. The deployment of all ten telescopes was completed in March 2024. We describe the design and performance of this new system and its components. We comment on modifications made to the QHY600 cameras, as well as on the treatment of random telegraph noise of its CMOS detectors within our data processing system BANZAI. The new telescope network supports the GSP program as well as multiple key science projects, including follow-up observations for the TESS satellite mission.

Abstract:For nearly a century, imaging and spectroscopic surveys of galaxies have given us information about the contents of the universe. We attempt to define the logical end point of such surveys by defining not the next galaxy survey but rather the final galaxy survey at near-infrared wavelengths; this would be the galaxy survey that exhausts the information content useful for addressing extant questions. Such a survey would require incredible advances in a number of technologies, and the survey details will depend on the as yet poorly constrained properties of the earliest galaxies. Using an exposure time calculator, we define nominal surveys for extracting the useful information for three science cases: dark energy cosmology, galaxy evolution, and supernovae (SN). We define scaling relations that trade off sky background, telescope aperture, and focal plane size to allow for a survey of a given depth over a given area. For optimistic assumptions, a 280 m telescope with a marginally resolved focal plane of 20 deg<sup>2</sup> operating at L2 could potentially exhaust the cosmological information content of galaxies in a 10 yr survey. For galaxy evolution (making use of gravitational lensing to magnify the earliest galaxies) and SN, the same telescope would suffice. We discuss the technological advances needed to complete the last galaxy survey. While the final galaxy survey remains well outside of our technical reach today, we present scaling relations that show how we can progress toward the goal of exhausting the information content encoded in the shapes, positions, and colors of galaxies.

Instrumentation and Methods for Astrophysics

Abstract:The number of small satellites has grown dramatically in the past decade from tens of satellites per year in the mid-2010s to a projection of tens of thousands in orbit by the mid-2020s. This presents both problems and opportunities for observational astronomy. Small satellites offer complementary cost-effective capabilities to both ground-based astronomy and larger space missions. Compared to ground-based astronomy, these advantages are not just in the accessibility of wavelength ranges where the Earth's atmosphere is opaque, but also in stable, high precision photometry, long-term monitoring and improved areal coverage. Astronomy has a long history of new observational parameter spaces leading to major discoveries. Here we discuss the potential for small satellites to explore new parameter spaces in astrophysics, drawing on examples from current and proposed missions, and spanning a wide range of science goals from binary stars, exoplanets and solar system science to the early Universe and fundamental physics.

Abstract:The Star Watch extreme-precision astrometry mission (0.1 - 1.0 uas) builds on technology developed, and validated, during the SIM (Space Interferometry Mission) project. The sole science instrument is an optical interferometer with 50-cm collecting apertures, separated by a 6-meter baseline. The heart of this detector is the Astrometric Beam Combiner (ABC). This is flight-quality hardware that underwent testing at high levels of integration, retiring most technical risk (achieving TRL-6) after 10 years and $600 million of investment. The ABC is in storage at JPL, ready to complete testing, followed by integration with the mission support structure. Star Watch incorporates advances in technology since the end of the SIM project. These include smaller, lighter beam launchers and corner cubes for laser metrology; attitude-control micro-thrusters, allowing deletion of reaction wheels; and advanced fringe detectors. The technology pioneered by Star Watch, the first long-baseline Michelson interferometer in space, represents an important investment in the future of space astronomy. NASA's proposed Vision Missions (Exo-Earth, Black Hole and Cosmic Dawn Mappers) require the use of precision interferometers. No other Astrophysics Probe concept comes close to this level of technical readiness. There are no analogs to Star Watch. It will provide access, for the first time, to the realm of temperate Terrestrial worlds circling nearby sun-like stars, measuring true masses and orbits. This can be achieved by the close of the 2020s.

Abstract:The rapid cost growth of flagship space missions has created a crisis for astronomy and planetary science. We have hit the funding wall. For the past 3 decades scientists have not had to think much about how space technology would change within their planning horizon. However, this time around enormous improvements in space infrastructure capabilities and, especially, costs are likely on the 20-year gestation periods for large space telescopes. Commercial space will lower launch and spacecraft costs substantially, enable cost-effective on-orbit servicing, cheap lunar landers and interplanetary cubesats by the early 2020s. A doubling of flagship launch rates is not implausible. On a longer timescale it will enable large structures to be assembled and constructed in space. These developments will change how we plan and design missions.
