Abstract:We carry out two-dimensional global particle-in-cell simulations of the interaction between the solar wind and a dipole field to study the formation of the bow shock and magnetosphere. A self-reforming bow shock ahead of a dipole field is presented by using relatively high temporal-spatial resolutions. We find that (1) the bow shock and the magnetosphere are formed and reach a quasi-stable state after several ion cyclotron periods, and (2) under the B-z southward solar wind condition, the bow shock undergoes a self-reformation for low beta(i) and high M-A. Simultaneously, a magnetic reconnection in the magnetotail is found. For high beta(i) and low M-A, the shock becomes quasi-stationary, and the magnetotail reconnection disappears. In addition, (3) the magnetopause deflects the magnetosheath plasmas. The sheath particles injected at the quasi-perpendicular region of the bow shock can be convected downstream of an oblique shock region. A fraction of these sheath particles can leak out from the magnetosheath at the wings of the bow shock. Hence, the downstream situation is more complicated than that for a planar shock produced in local simulations.

Abstract:Bow shock structures are important to various hydrodynamics and magnetohydrodynamics (MHD) phenomena in geophysics and astrophysics. The formation and propagation of bow shocks around the lightning return stroke channel are investigated based on the self-similar motion theory and simulated with a two-dimensional Eulerian finite volume resistive radiation MHD code. In this framework, as verification of theoretical models, the evolving structures of many quantities, such as the plasma density, temperature, pressure, shock velocity, and magnetic field, can be obtained, which present all the characteristics of bow shocks in the lightning return stroke processes. The evolution characteristics and the configuration of the curved return stroke channels, e.g., the non-ideal effects and the scaling laws, are discussed in detail. The results may have applications for some observed features of the return stroke channels and other phenomena in the lightning discharge plasmas.

Dynamic Motion of the Bow Shock and the Magnetopause Observed by Themis Spacecraft

Abstract:We present an observational study of the dynamic motion of the bow shock and the magnetopause and suggest that the dynamic motion of the bow shock is due to the interaction of an interplanetary shock with the Earth's bow shock. THEMIS B spacecraft crossed the magnetopause, a discontinuity and the bow shock successively in 5 min during its outbound journey on 10 July 2007. Following THEMIS B, THEMIS C, D, E and A consecutively crossed the magnetopause and the discontinuity but not the bow shock. Timing analysis shows that the magnetopause and the discontinuity were moving earthward with speeds of ∼47 km/s and ∼90 km/s, respectively. There is a trend that the discontinuity decelerates as it propagates toward the magnetopause. We suggest that the dynamic motion and the discontinuity are results of the interaction of a weak (MA = 1.4) interplanetary shock with the Earth's bow shock. After the interaction, the transmitted interplanetary shock took the form of a discontinuity where total magnetic field and density increase and the temperature decreases. The rotation of the magnetic field across this discontinuity was similar to that of the interplanetary shock. The expected fast shock ahead of the discontinuity for shock‐shock interaction was not observed.
The Structure and Kinetic Ion Behavior of Low Mach Number Shocks

Abstract:Low Mach number collisionless shocks are routinely observed in the solar wind and upstream of planetary bodies. However, most in situ observations have lacked the necessary temporal resolution to directly study the kinetic behavior of ions across these shocks. We investigate a series of five low Mach number bow shock crossings observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. The five shocks had comparable Mach numbers, but varying shock-normal angles ($66^{\circ} \lesssim \theta_{Bn} \lesssim 89^{\circ}$) and ramp widths ($5~\mathrm{km} \lesssim l \lesssim 100~\mathrm{km}$). The shock width is shown to be crucial in determining the fraction of protons reflected and energized by the shock, with proton reflection increasing with decreasing shock width. As the shock width increases proton reflection is arrested entirely. For nearly perpendicular shocks, reflected protons exhibit quasi-periodic structures, which persist far downstream of the shock. As the shock-normal angle becomes more oblique these periodic proton structures broaden to form an energetic halo population. Periodic fluctuations in the magnetic field downstream of the shocks are generated by fluctuations in dynamic pressure of alpha particles, which are decelerated by the cross-shock potential and subsequently undergo gyrophase bunching. These results demonstrate that complex kinetic-scale ion dynamics occur in low Mach number shocks, which depend significantly on the shock profile.

Abstract:The Earth’s bow shock is the best-known collisionless shock in space. Although much is known about the bow shock, the mechanisms of heating and thermalization processes still remain poorly understood. Collisionless shocks are different from ordinary fluid shocks, because a fraction of the incident solar wind is reflected from the bow shock and the transmitted particles are not immediately thermalized. The reflected particles interact with the incident solar wind producing waves and instabilities that can heat and accelerate particles to high energies. Some of the waves can grow to large amplitudes such as Short Large Amplitude Magnetic Structures. Other upstream nonlinear structures include hot flow anomalies and density holes. The upstream nonlinear structures subsequently convect Earthward with the SW and could impact the structure and dynamics of the bow shock. These observations have clearly indicated that the upstream dynamics are an integral part of the bow shock system. Although much has been learned about the behavior of Earth’s bow shock dynamics from the existing data, many fundamental questions remain not answered. This article will review observations of ion dynamics of Earth’s bow shock system, what we have learned from recent and past observations. We provide new perspectives from multi-spacecraft Cluster observations about the spatial and temporal variations including the fundamental shock heating, acceleration, and entropy generation processes.
Double layers in the Earth's bow shock

Abstract:We present Magnetospheric Multiscale observations of electrostatic double layers in quasi-perpendicular Earth's bow shock. These double layers have predominantly parallel electric field with amplitudes up to 100 mV/m, spatial widths of 50-700 m, and plasma frame speeds within 100 km/s. The potential drop across a single double layer is 2-7% of the cross-shock potential in the de Hoffmann-Teller frame and occurs over the spatial scale of ten Debye lengths or one tenth of electron inertial length. Some double layers can have spatial width of 70 Debye lengths and potential drop up to 30% of the cross-shock potential. The electron temperature variation observed across double layers is roughly consistent with their potential drop. While electron heating in the Earth's bow shock occurs predominantly due to the quasi-static electric field in the de Hoffmann-Teller frame, these observations show that electron temperature can also increase across Debye-scale electrostatic structures.

Abstract:The terrestrial bow shock is the boundary where supersonic solar wind slows down abruptly near the magnetopause. The shock front geometry could be modulated by surface waves to form rippled structures, which impact the acceleration process of the solar wind particles. However, the rippled structures are hard to be identified unambiguously due to the similar signatures in single‐spacecraft observations between rippled shocks and reforming shocks. Here, we utilize the four‐spacecraft observations from the MMS mission to investigate an event of quasi‐perpendicular bow shock crossing. The periodic oscillations of shock normal directions and normal velocities support the scenario of surface wave propagation in the tangential direction. We also reconstruct the shock profile along the normal direction, and its monotonic shape further excludes the occurrence of shock reformation. These ripples are found to modulate the reflected ions and whistler wave packets, which adds to the complexity of the bow shock plasma environments.

Abstract:Dayside transients are frequently observed upstream from the bow shock (such as hot flow anomalies, foreshock cavities, and foreshock bubbles) and at the magnetopause (such as flux transfer events and surface waves). They play a significant role in the mass, energy, and momentum transport from the solar wind into the magnetosphere and impact the whole magnetosphere–ionosphere system. The Geospace Environment Modeling (GEM) Transient Phenomena at the Magnetopause and Bow Shock and Their Ground Signatures focus group has employed both observations and simulations to investigate transient phenomena at the magnetopause and bow shock and their impacts on the magnetosphere–ionosphere. There are over 80 peer-reviewed papers (only those presented in this focus group at GEM were included) and 8 PhD and MS theses of the students who were actively working on the focus group topics.

Abstract:The high-speed solar wind decelerates as it travels through the Earth's bow shock, during which a portion of the incident flow energy is converted into the plasma thermal energy. However, the energy partition of plasma heating among different species, as well as the energy dissipation mechanism, remains elusive. In this paper, we quantify the plasma heating and the energy dissipation by calculating the pressure–strain interactions in 33 quasi-perpendicular bow shocks observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft. Our results show that the Joule dissipation measured by J · E ′ and the quasi-viscous dissipation quantified by PiD are distinct in the examined shocks. We also reveal that ions gain more energy than electrons, and the compressive effect is more important than the incompressible channel in plasma heating. PiD contributed by the gyrotropic pressure tensor is consistently positive for electrons; however, there is no discernible distinction between the gyrotropic and nongyrotropic contribution to PiD for ions.

Abstract:Turbulence is often enhanced when transmitted through a collisionless plasma shock. We investigate how the enhanced turbulent energy in the Earth's magnetosheath effectively dissipates via vortex arrays. This research topic is of great importance as it relates to particle energization at astrophysical shocks across the universe. Wave modes and intermittent coherent structures are the key candidate mechanisms for energy conversion in turbulent plasmas. Here, by comparing in-situ measurements in the Earth's magnetosheath with a theoretical model, we find the existence of vortex arrays at the transition between the downstream regions of the Earth's bow shock. Vortex arrays consist of quasi-orthogonal kinetic waves and exhibit both high volumetric filling factors and strong local energy conversion, thereby showing a greater dissipative energization than traditional waves and coherent structures. Therefore, we propose that vortex arrays are a promising mechanism for efficient energy conversion in the sheath regions downstream of astrophysical shocks.

Abstract:Magnetosonic (MS) waves, i.e., ion Bernstein mode waves, are one of the common plasma waves in the Earth's magnetosphere, which are important for regulating charged particle dynamics. How MS waves propagate in the magnetosphere is critical to understanding the global distribution of the waves, but it remains unclear. Although previous studies present that MS waves can be reflected by fine-scale density structures, the dissipation of waves by background plasma has long been neglected. In this study, we perform one-dimensional (1-D) particle-in-cell (PIC) simulations to study the propagation of MS waves through density structures, where both absorption and reflection have been included. We find that absorption is as important as reflection when considering the propagation of MS waves through density structures, and both of them are strongly dependent on the shape of density structures. Specifically, the reflectivity of MS waves is positively and negatively correlated with the height and width of density structures, respectively, while the absorptivity of MS waves has a positive correlation with both the height and width of density structures. Our study demonstrates the significance of absorption during the propagation of MS waves, which may help better understand the distribution of MS waves in the Earth's magnetosphere.

Abstract:Wave--particle interactions play a crucial role in transferring energy between electromagnetic fields and charged particles in space and astrophysical plasmas. Despite the prevalence of different electromagnetic waves in space, there is still a lack of understanding of fundamental aspects of wave--particle interactions, particularly in terms of energy flow and velocity-space characteristics. In this study, we combine a novel quasilinear model with observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission to reveal the signatures of resonant interactions between electrons and whistler waves in magnetic holes, which are coherent structures often found in the Earth's magnetosheath. We investigate the energy transfer rates and velocity-space characteristics associated with Landau and cyclotron resonances between electrons and slightly oblique propagating whistler waves. In the case of our observed magnetic hole, the loss of electron kinetic energy primarily contributes to the growth of whistler waves through the $n=-1$ cyclotron resonance, where $n$ is the order of the resonance expansion in linear Vlasov--Maxwell theory. The excitation of whistler waves leads to a reduction of the temperature anisotropy and parallel heating of the electrons. Our study offers a new and self-consistent understanding of resonant energy transfer in turbulent plasmas.
