Abstract:The Kelvin–Helmholtz instability (KHI), characterized by vortices forming at a perturbed velocity shear layer, is a prominent candidate mechanism for mass, momentum, and energy transport across boundaries with velocity shear in various space plasma environments. It is of particular interest at the flanks of Earth's magnetopause, which separates the plasma of the magnetosphere from the adjacent shocked solar wind flow in the magnetosheath. In the present study, we use local hybrid-Vlasov simulations to investigate the ion velocity distribution functions (VDFs) associated with KHI in a magnetopause-like, transverse velocity shear layer setting (magnetic field perpendicular to the shear plane). We look for signatures of ion finite Larmor radius (FLR) effects, which could be utilized in spacecraft measurements to recognize when such effects are active, influencing KHI evolution and driving plasma mixing. We show that when a density/temperature asymmetry exists across the shear layer, FLR effects produce a heat flux along the vortex edges. With a magnitude (≳0.1 mW m −2 ) that is a significant fraction of the total magnetosheath energy flux, the heat flux provides a distinct signature that could be measured with a single spacecraft. During the late nonlinear stage of KHI, mixed non-Maxwellian ion VDFs are additionally found within the vortices. Our results are also valid in the presence of a small magnetic shear across the magnetopause.

Abstract:We study the linear stability of a planar interface separating two fluids in relative motion, focusing on the symmetric configuration where the two fluids have the same properties (density, temperature, magnetic field strength, and direction). We consider the most general case with arbitrary sound speed $c_{\rm s}$, Alfvén speed $v_{\rm A}$, and magnetic field orientation. For the instability associated with the fast mode, we find that the lower bound of unstable shear velocities is set by the requirement that the projection of the velocity onto the fluid-frame wavevector is larger than the projection of the Alfvén speed onto the same direction, i.e., shear should overcome the effect of magnetic tension. In the frame where the two fluids move in opposite directions with equal speed $v$, the upper bound of unstable velocities corresponds to an effective relativistic Mach number $M_{re} \equiv v/v_{\rm f\perp} \sqrt{(1-v_{\rm f\perp}^2)/(1-v^2)} \cos\theta=\sqrt{2}$, where $v_{rm f\perp}=[v_A^2+c_{\rm s}^2(1-v_A^2)]^{1/2}$ is the fast speed assuming a magnetic field perpendicular to the wavevector (here, all velocities are in units of the speed of light), and $\theta$ is the laboratory-frame angle between the flow velocity and the wavevector projection onto the shear interface. Our results have implications for shear flows in the magnetospheres of neutron stars and black holes -- both for single objects and for merging binaries -- where the Alfvén speed may approach the speed of light.

Abstract:We are interested on the effects, caused by strong variable density dependent magnetic fields, on hyperonic matter, its symmetry energy, equations of state and mass-radius relations. The inclusion of the anomalous magnetic moment of the particles involved in a stellar system is performed, and some results are compared with the cases that do not take this correction under consideration. The Lagrangian density used follows the nonlinear Walecka model plus the leptons subjected to an external magnetic field.

Abstract:This paper is concerned with the condition for the development of ballooning instability in the dipole Earth's magnetosphere. Under investigation is the dependence of the ratio of the radial and azimuthal wave vector components squared on the wave frequency squared ω2. It is shown that this dependence is depicted by continuous curve (the dispersion curve). The part of the dispersion curve with ω2>0 corresponds to the slow magnetosonic mode modified by the coupling with the Alfvén mode, while the part with ω2<0 corresponds to the ballooning instability. The instability appears at some critical ratio of the radial and azimuthal wave vector components, the growth rate reaches the maximum value where this ratio is zero. The instability threshold is determined depending on the β parameter and the pressure gradient when the coupling of the slow and Alfvén modes is taken into account. On a given magnetic shell, at a given β value, large pressure gradient favors the instability, and vice versa, at a given pressure gradient, a large β favors instability. It is shown that in the unstable mode, the compressional magnetic field component has a phase shift with respect to the radial component. This can be used to detect unstable ballooning modes during observations in the Earth's magnetosphere.

Abstract:This article is a contribution to the proceedings of the 33rd/35th International Colloquium on Group Theoretical Methods in Physics (ICGTMP, Group33/35) held in Cotonou, Benin, July 15-19, 2024. The stability of matter is an old and mathematically difficult problem, relying both on the uncertainty principle of quantum mechanics and on the exclusion principle of quantum statistics. We consider here the stability of the self-interacting almost-bosonic anyon gas, generalizing the Gross-Pitaevskii / nonlinear Schrödinger energy functionals to include magnetic self interactions. We show that there is a type of supersymmetry in the model which holds only for higher values of the magnetic coupling but is broken for lower values, and that in the former case supersymmetric ground states exist precisely at even-integer quantized values of the coupling. These states constitute a manifold of explicit solitonic vortex solutions whose densities solve a generalized Liouville equation, and can be regarded as nonlinear generalizations of Landau levels. The reported work is joint with Alireza Ataei and Dinh-Thi Nguyen and makes an earlier analysis of self-dual abelian Chern-Simons-Higgs theory by Jackiw and Pi, Hagen, and others, mathematically rigorous.

Magnetar Activity via the Density-Shear Instability in Hall-MHD

Abstract:We investigate the density-shear instability in Hall-MHD via numerical simulation of the full non-linear problem, in the context of magnetar activity. We confirm the development of the instability of a plane-parallel magnetic field with an appropriate intensity and electron density profile, in accordance with analytic theory. We find that the instability also appears for a monotonically decreasing electron number density and magnetic field, a plane-parallel analogue of an azimuthal or meridional magnetic field in the crust of a magnetar. The growth rate of the instability depends on the Hall properties of the field (magnetic field intensity, electron number density and the corresponding scale-heights), while being insensitive to weak resistivity. Since the Hall effect is the driving process for the evolution of the crustal magnetic field of magnetars, we argue that this instability is critical for systems containing strong meridional or azimuthal fields. We find that this process mediates the formation of localised structures with much stronger magnetic field than the average, which can lead to magnetar activity and accelerate the dissipation of the field and consequently the production of Ohmic heating. Assuming a $5\times10^{14}$G magnetic field at the base of crust, we anticipate that magnetic field as strong as $10^{15}$G will easily develop in regions of typical size of a few $10^{2}$ meters, containing magnetic energy of $10^{43}$erg, sufficient to power magnetar bursts. These active regions are more likely to appear in the magnetic equator where the tangential magnetic field is stronger.

Abstract:The Kelvin–Helmholtz (KH) instability of a shear layer with an initially uniform magnetic field in the direction of flow is studied in the framework of 2D incompressible magnetohydrodynamics with finite resistivity and viscosity using direct numerical simulations. The shear layer evolves freely, with no external forcing, and thus broadens in time as turbulent stresses transport momentum across it. As with hydrodynamic KH, the instability here features a conjugate stable mode for every unstable mode in the absence of dissipation. Stable modes are shown to transport momentum up its gradient, shrinking the layer width whenever they exceed unstable modes in amplitude. In simulations with weak magnetic fields, the linear instability is minimally affected by the field, but enhanced small-scale fluctuations relative to the hydrodynamic case are observed. These enhanced fluctuations coincide with increased energy dissipation and faster layer broadening, with these features more pronounced in simulations with stronger fields. These trends result from the magnetic field reducing the effects of stable modes relative to the transfer of energy to small scales. As field strength increases, stable modes become less excited, thus transporting less momentum against its gradient. Furthermore, the energy that would otherwise transfer back to the driving shear because of the stable modes is instead allowed to cascade to small scales, where it is lost to dissipation. Approximations of the turbulent state in terms of a reduced set of modes are explored. While the Reynolds stress is well-described using just two modes per wavenumber at large scales, the Maxwell stress is not.

Abstract:Magnetic cavities are sudden depressions of magnetic field strength widely observed in the space plasma environments, which are often accompanied by plasma density and pressure enhancement. To describe these cavities, a self-consistent kinetic model has been proposed as an equilibrium solution to the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. However, observations from the Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) constellation have shown the existence of helical magnetic cavities characterized by the presence of azimuthal magnetic field, which could not be reconstructed by the aforementioned model. Here, we take into account another invariant of motion, the canonical axial momentum, to construct the particle distributions and accordingly modify the equilibrium model. The reconstructed magnetic cavity shows excellent agreement with the MMS1 observations not only in the electromagnetic field and plasma moment profiles but also in electron pitch-angle distributions. With the same set of parameters, the model also predicts signatures of the neighboring MMS3 spacecraft, matching its observations satisfactorily.
Evolution of a magnetic field in a differentially rotating radiative zone

Abstract:Recent spectropolarimetric surveys of main-sequence intermediate-mass stars have exhibited a dichotomy in the distribution of the observed magnetic field between the kG dipoles of Ap/Bp stars and the sub-Gauss magnetism of Vega and Sirius. We would like to test whether this dichotomy is linked to the stability versus instability of large-scale magnetic configurations in differentially rotating radiative zones. We computed the axisymmetric magnetic field obtained from the evolution of a dipolar field threading a differentially rotating shell. A full parameter study including various density profiles and initial and boundary conditions was performed with a 2D numerical code. We then focused on the ratio between the toroidal and poloidal components of the magnetic field and discuss the stability of the configurations dominated by the toroidal component using local stability criteria and insights from recent 3D numerical simulations. The numerical results and a simple model show that the ratio between the toroidal and the poloidal magnetic fields is highest after an Alfvén crossing time of the initial poloidal field. For high density contrasts, this ratio converges towards an asymptotic value that can thus be extrapolated to realistic stellar cases. We then consider the stability of the magnetic configurations to non-axisymmetric perturbations and find that configurations dominated by the toroidal component are likely to be unstable if the shear strength is significantly higher than the poloidal Alfvén frequency. An expression for the critical poloidal field below which magnetic fields are likely to be unstable is found and is compared to the lower bound of Ap/Bp magnetic fields.

Abstract:Magnetic anisotropy is one of the important factors in determining magnetic structures. A type of magnetic anisotropy is closely related to the symmetry of crystals. We theoretically investigate magnetic anisotropy and its related magnetic instability arising from an electric axial moment, which appears under the breaking of the mirror symmetry parallel to the moment but does not require the breakings of both spatial inversion and time-reversal symmetries. By performing perturbation and mean-field calculations in a complementary way, we show the appearance of the in-plane magnetic anisotropy when the electric axial moment occurs, which tends to tilt in-plane spin moments from the crystal axes in collaboration with relativistic spin--orbit coupling. We demonstrate such a tendency for single-site and four-site cluster models, the latter of which leads to the instability toward a spin vortex phase accompanying magnetic monopole and magnetic toroidal dipole.

Parametric instabilities in shallow water magnetohydrodynamics of astrophysical plasma in external magnetic field

Abstract:This article deals with magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) flows of a thin rotating layer of astrophysical plasma in external magnetic field. We use the shallow water approximation to describe thin rotating plasma layer with a free surface in a vertical external magnetic field. The MHD shallow water equations with external vertical magnetic field are revised by supplementing them with the equations that are consequences of the magnetic field divergence-free conditions and reveal the existence of third component of the magnetic field in such approximation providing its relation with the horizontal magnetic field. It is shown that the presence of a vertical magnetic field significantly changes the dynamics of the wave processes in astrophysical plasma compared to the neutral fluid and plasma layer in a toroidal magnetic field. The equations for the nonlinear wave packets interactions are derived using the asymptotic multiscale method. The equations for three magneto-Poincare waves interactions, for three magnetostrophic waves interactions, for the interactions of two magneto-Poincare waves and for one magnetostrophic wave and two magnetostrophic wave and one magneto-Poincare wave interactions are obtained. The existence of parametric decay and parametric amplifications is predicted. We found following four types of parametric decay instabilities: magneto-Poincare wave decays into two magneto-Poincare waves, magnetostrophic wave decays into two magnetostrophic waves, magneto-Poincare wave decays into one magneto-Poincare wave and one magnetostrophic wave, magnetostrophic wave decays into one magnetostrophic wave and one magneto-Poincare wave. Following mechanisms of parametric amplifications are found: parametric amplification of magneto-Poincare waves, parametric amplification of magnetostrophic waves, magneto-Poincare wave amplification in magnetostrophic wave presence and magnetostrophic wave amplification in magneto-Poincare wave presence. The instabilities growth rates are obtained respectively.

Decay of Kelvin-Helmholtz Vortices at the Earth's Magnetopause Under Pure Southward IMF Conditions

Abstract:At the Earth's low-latitude magnetopause, clear signatures of the Kelvin-Helmholtz (KH) waves have been frequently observed during periods of the northward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), whereas these signatures have been much less frequently observed during the southward IMF. Here, we performed the first 3-D fully kinetic simulation of the magnetopause KH instability under the southward IMF condition. The simulation demonstrates that fast magnetic reconnection is induced at multiple locations along the vortex edge in an early nonlinear growth phase of the instability. The reconnection outflow jets significantly disrupt the flow of the nonlinear KH vortex, while the disrupted turbulent flow strongly bends and twists the reconnected field lines. The resulting coupling of the complex field and flow patterns within the magnetopause boundary layer leads to a quick decay of the vortex structure, which may explain the difference in the observation probability of KH waves between northward and southward IMF conditions.

Abstract:In many magnetized, dilute astrophysical plasmas, thermal conduction occurs almost exclusively parallel to magnetic field lines. In this case, the usual stability criterion for convective stability, the Schwarzschild criterion, which depends on entropy gradients, is modified. In the magnetized long mean free path regime, instability occurs for small wavenumbers when (∂ P/∂z) (∂ ln T/∂ z) > 0, which we refer to as the Balbus criterion. We refer to the convective-type instability that results as the magnetothermal instability (MTI). We use the equations of MHD with anisotropic electron heat conduction to numerically simulate the linear growth and nonlinear saturation of the MTI in plane-parallel atmospheres that are unstable according to the Balbus criterion. The linear growth rates measured from the simulations are in excellent agreement with the weak field dispersion relation. The addition of isotropic conduction, e.g. radiation, or strong magnetic fields can damp the growth of the MTI and affect the nonlinear regime. The instability saturates when the atmosphere becomes isothermal as the source of free energy is exhausted. By maintaining a fixed temperature difference between the top and bottom boundaries of the simulation domain, sustained convective turbulence can be driven. MTI-stable layers introduced by isotropic conduction are used to prevent the formation of unresolved, thermal boundary layers. We find that the largest component of the time-averaged heat flux is due to advective motions as opposed to the actual thermal conduction itself. Finally, we explore the implications of this instability for a variety of astrophysical systems, such as neutron stars, the hot intracluster medium of galaxy clusters, and the structure of radiatively inefficient accretion flows.

Abstract:Richtmyer–Meshkov instability (RMI) caused by the interaction of a shock wave and a density interface in the presence of a transverse magnetic field is investigated numerically using the ideal compressible magneto-hydro-dynamic (MHD) equations. The MHD equations are solved with the corner transport upwind + constrained transport algorithm that guarantees the divergence-free constraint on the magnetic field. The numerical results clearly capture the evolution of the density interface induced by the RMI for both HD and MHD situations, which are in good agreement with the previous experimental and numerical results. Moreover, current numerical results reveal a potential stabilizing mechanism of the flow instability by the transverse magnetic field: it is found that the magnetic tension produces a torque on the interface fluid, which is opposite to the torque driven by the velocity shear; therefore, the Kelvin–Helmholtz instability on the density interface caused by the velocity shear is effectively suppressed. In addition, detailed information about the magnetic strength, magnetic energy, magnetic tension, and vorticity on the density interface is also quantitatively analyzed, and the results suggest that the RMI is quite an efficient mechanism for the amplification of the magnetic field, which, in turn, enhances the suppression of the flow instability.

Lower‐hybrid‐drift Instability and Its Associated Anomalous Resistivity in the Neutral Sheet of Earth's Magnetotail

Abstract:It has been suggested previously that at the center of the earth's plasma sheet there exists a thin nonadiabatic layer, the neutral sheet, whose thickness is of the order of the ion gyroradius. The ion distribution in such a thin sheet may have some non‐Maxwellian form. The purpose of this paper is to construct a one‐dimensional ‘non‐Maxwellian’ model for the steady neutral sheet and to examine its instability properties with respect to the lower‐hybrid‐drift (LHD) wave. A combination of a Boltzmann distribution and a modified Alpers’ distribution for ions is taken. We show that in the limit of a thin neutral sheet, this distribution is a more powerful source of free energy than the usual drifting Maxwellian. It is found that most regions within the neutral sheet are unstable. The frequency spectrum of the unstable waves is nearly the same as in the drifting Maxwellian case. As shown previously by Huba et al. (1978), the frequency spectrum is in good agreement with the observations. The growth rate, assuming a modified Alpers' distribution function, is found to be enhanced compared with that due to a drifting Maxwellian model in a portion of the sheet at some distance from the null of the field. The saturation level of the fluctuating field and the anomalous resistivity are calculated in the entire sheet by using current relaxation as the stabilizing mechanism and are found to be 3–4 times larger than those in a Maxwellian sheet.
Dyakonov-Shur instability of electronic fluid: Spectral effect of weak magnetic field

Abstract:We study numerically and analytically how the Dyakonov-Shur instability for a two-dimensional (2D) inviscid electronic fluid in a long channel can be affected by an external, out-of-plane static magnetic field. By linear stability analysis for a model based on the shallow-water equations, we describe the discrete spectrum of frequencies. When the fluid system is near the subsonic-to-supersonic transition point, a magnetically controlled gap between the stability and instability spectra of the complex eigen-frequencies is evident by our computations. This suggests that, within this model, the passage from stability to instability (and vice versa) is no longer continuous in the effective Mach parameter of the boundary conditions. We also demonstrate that the growth exponents are enhanced by the magnetic field. In a regime of weak magnetic fields, we derive a scaling law for the eigen-frequencies by perturbation theory. We discuss theoretical implications of our results in efforts to generate terahertz electromagnetic radiation by 2D electronic transport.

Abstract:In weak magnetic fields ($\lesssim 50 \,\mbox{G}$), parallel and perpendicular viscosities, mainly from neutrals, may exceed magnetic diffusivities (Ohm, Hall, ambipolar) in the middle and upper chromosphere. Ion-driven gyroviscosity may dominate in the upper chromosphere and transition region. In strong fields ($\gtrsim 100\, \mbox{G}$), viscosities primarily exceed diffusivities in the upper chromosphere and transition region. Parallel and perpendicular viscosities, being similar in magnitude, dampen waves and potentially compete with ambipolar diffusion in plasma heating, potentially inhibiting Hall and ambipolar instabilities when equal. The perpendicular viscosity tensor has two components, $\nu_1$ and $\nu_2$, which differ slightly and show weak dependence on ion magnetization. Their differences, combined with shear, may destabilize waves, though magnetic diffusion introduces a cutoff for this instability. In configurations with a magnetic field $\bf{B}$ having vertical ($b_z=B_z/|\bf{B}|$) and azimuthal ($b_y=B_y/|\bf{B}|$) components, and a wavevector $\bf{k}$ with radial ($\kx=k_x/|\bf{k}|$) and vertical ($\kz=k_z/|\bf{k}|$) components, parallel viscosity and Hall diffusion can generate the viscous-Hall instability. Gyroviscosity further destabilizes waves in the upper regions. These findings indicate that the solar atmosphere may experience various viscous instabilities, revealing complex interactions between viscosity, magnetic fields, and plasma dynamics across different atmospheric regions.
