Abstract:The Earth’s bow shock is the best-known collisionless shock in space. Although much is known about the bow shock, the mechanisms of heating and thermalization processes still remain poorly understood. Collisionless shocks are different from ordinary fluid shocks, because a fraction of the incident solar wind is reflected from the bow shock and the transmitted particles are not immediately thermalized. The reflected particles interact with the incident solar wind producing waves and instabilities that can heat and accelerate particles to high energies. Some of the waves can grow to large amplitudes such as Short Large Amplitude Magnetic Structures. Other upstream nonlinear structures include hot flow anomalies and density holes. The upstream nonlinear structures subsequently convect Earthward with the SW and could impact the structure and dynamics of the bow shock. These observations have clearly indicated that the upstream dynamics are an integral part of the bow shock system. Although much has been learned about the behavior of Earth’s bow shock dynamics from the existing data, many fundamental questions remain not answered. This article will review observations of ion dynamics of Earth’s bow shock system, what we have learned from recent and past observations. We provide new perspectives from multi-spacecraft Cluster observations about the spatial and temporal variations including the fundamental shock heating, acceleration, and entropy generation processes.

Abstract:It has been long theorized, but not directly observed, that low-frequency magnetosonic plasma waves can steepen and form shocks. We show an example of small-amplitude, sinusoidal magnetosonic waves at the proton gyrofrequency upstream of the Martian bow shock. We hypothesize that these waves are produced by an ion beam instability associated with the ionization of hydrogen atoms by charge exchange with solar wind protons, solar photoionization, and/or electron impact ionization. As the waves are convected toward the planet by solar wind flow, the wave amplitude grows due to additional free energy put into the system by further ion beam particles. Finally, the steepened waves form shocks. Because of their development, the shocks are periodic with the separation at the proton gyroperiod. These observations lead to the conclusion that newborn ions may play a crucial role in the formation process of some collisionless plasma shocks in astrophysical and space plasmas.

Abstract:Turbulence is often enhanced when transmitted through a collisionless plasma shock. We investigate how the enhanced turbulent energy in the Earth's magnetosheath effectively dissipates via vortex arrays. This research topic is of great importance as it relates to particle energization at astrophysical shocks across the universe. Wave modes and intermittent coherent structures are the key candidate mechanisms for energy conversion in turbulent plasmas. Here, by comparing in-situ measurements in the Earth's magnetosheath with a theoretical model, we find the existence of vortex arrays at the transition between the downstream regions of the Earth's bow shock. Vortex arrays consist of quasi-orthogonal kinetic waves and exhibit both high volumetric filling factors and strong local energy conversion, thereby showing a greater dissipative energization than traditional waves and coherent structures. Therefore, we propose that vortex arrays are a promising mechanism for efficient energy conversion in the sheath regions downstream of astrophysical shocks.
Full Particle Electromagnetic Simulations of Entropy Generation Across A Collisionless Shock

Abstract:Experimental data from Cluster have shown that entropy density can be generated across Earth's bow shock. These new observations are a starting point for a more sophisticated analysis that includes computer modeling of a collisionless shock using observed shock parameters as input. In this Letter, we present the first comparison between observations and particle-in-cell simulations of such entropy generation across a collisionless shock. The ion heating at the shock is dominated by the phase mixing of reflected and directly transmitted ions, which are separated from the incident ions. The electron heating is a nearly thermal process due to the conservation of their angular momentum. For both species, we calculate the entropy density across the shock, and obtain good consistency between observations and simulations on entropy generation across the shock. We also find that the entropy generation rate is reduced as the shock Mach number decreases.

Abstract:Electrons are accelerated to non-thermal energies at shocks in space and astrophysical environments. While different mechanisms of electron acceleration have been proposed, it remains unclear how non-thermal electrons are produced out of the thermal plasma pool. Here, we report in situ evidence of pitch-angle scattering of non-thermal electrons by whistler waves at Earth’s bow shock. On 2015 November 4, the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission crossed the bow shock with an Alfvén Mach number ∼11 and a shock angle ∼84°. In the ramp and overshoot regions, MMS revealed bursty enhancements of non-thermal (0.5–2 keV) electron flux, correlated with high-frequency (0.2–0.4 , where is the cyclotron frequency) parallel-propagating whistler waves. The electron velocity distribution (measured at 30 ms cadence) showed an enhanced gradient of phase-space density at and around the region where the electron velocity component parallel to the magnetic field matched the resonant energy inferred from the wave frequency range. The flux of 0.5 keV electrons (measured at 1 ms cadence) showed fluctuations with the same frequency. These features indicate that non-thermal electrons were pitch-angle scattered by cyclotron resonance with the high-frequency whistler waves. However, the precise role of the pitch-angle scattering by the higher-frequency whistler waves and possible nonlinear effects in the electron acceleration process remains unclear.
Ion Dynamics Across a Low Mach Number Bow Shock

Abstract:A thorough understanding of collisionless shocks requires knowledge of how different ion species are accelerated across the shock. We investigate a bow shock crossing using the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft after a coronal mass ejection crossed Earth, which led to solar wind consisting of protons, alpha particles, and singly charge helium ions. The low Mach number of the bow shock enabled the ions to be distinguished upstream and sometimes downstream of the shock. Some of the protons are specularly reflected and produce quasi-periodic fine structures in the velocity distribution functions downstream of the shock. Heavier ions are shown to transit the shock without reflection. However, the gyromotion of the heavier ions partially obscures the fine structure of proton distributions. Additionally, the calculated proton moments are unreliable when the different ion species are not distinguished by the particle detector. The need to high time-resolution mass-resolving ion detectors when investigating collisionless shocks is discussed.

Abstract:Collisionless shock waves are one of the main forms of energy conversion in space plasmas. They can directly or indirectly drive other universal plasma processes such as magnetic reconnection, turbulence, particle acceleration and wave phenomena. Collisionless shocks employ a myriad of kinetic plasma mechanisms to convert the kinetic energy of supersonic flows in space to other forms of energy (e.g., thermal plasma, energetic particles, or Poynting flux) in order for the flow to pass an immovable obstacle. The partitioning of energy downstream of collisionless shocks is not well understood, nor are the processes which perform energy conversion. While we, as the heliophysics community, have collected an abundance of observations of the terrestrial bow shock, instrument and mission-level limitations have made it impossible to quantify this partition, to establish the physics within the shock layer responsible for it, and to understand its dependence on upstream conditions. This paper stresses the need for the first ever spacecraft mission specifically designed and dedicated to the observation of both the terrestrial bow shock as well as Interplanetary shocks in the solar wind.

The Structure and Kinetic Ion Behavior of Low Mach Number Shocks

Abstract:Low Mach number collisionless shocks are routinely observed in the solar wind and upstream of planetary bodies. However, most in situ observations have lacked the necessary temporal resolution to directly study the kinetic behavior of ions across these shocks. We investigate a series of five low Mach number bow shock crossings observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. The five shocks had comparable Mach numbers, but varying shock-normal angles ($66^{\circ} \lesssim \theta_{Bn} \lesssim 89^{\circ}$) and ramp widths ($5~\mathrm{km} \lesssim l \lesssim 100~\mathrm{km}$). The shock width is shown to be crucial in determining the fraction of protons reflected and energized by the shock, with proton reflection increasing with decreasing shock width. As the shock width increases proton reflection is arrested entirely. For nearly perpendicular shocks, reflected protons exhibit quasi-periodic structures, which persist far downstream of the shock. As the shock-normal angle becomes more oblique these periodic proton structures broaden to form an energetic halo population. Periodic fluctuations in the magnetic field downstream of the shocks are generated by fluctuations in dynamic pressure of alpha particles, which are decelerated by the cross-shock potential and subsequently undergo gyrophase bunching. These results demonstrate that complex kinetic-scale ion dynamics occur in low Mach number shocks, which depend significantly on the shock profile.

Abstract:Collisionless shocks play a key role in the heliosphere at planetary bow shocks by governing the conversion of the upstream bulk kinetic energy of the solar wind flow to other forms of energy in the downstream, including bulk plasma heat, acceleration of particles, and magnetic energy. Here we present the first observational identification of the velocity-space signature of shock-drift acceleration of ions at a perpendicular collisionless shock, previously predicted using kinetic numerical simulations, using a field-particle correlation analysis of Magnetospheric Multiscale (\emph{MMS}) observations of Earth's bow shock. Furthermore, by resolving the ion energization rates as a function of particle velocity, the field-particle correlation technique facilitates a clean quantitative separation of the energization rate of the reflected ions from that of the incoming ion beam, enabling a more complete characterization of the energy conversion at the shock.

Abstract:Using multipoint Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) observations in an unusual string-of-pearls configuration, we examine in detail observations of the reformation of a fast magnetosonic shock observed on the upstream edge of a foreshock transient structure upstream of Earth's bow shock. The four MMS spacecraft were separated by several hundred km, comparable to suprathermal ion gyro-radius scales or several ion inertial lengths. At least half of the shock reformation cycle was observed, with a new shock ramp rising up out of the "foot" region of the original shock ramp. Using the multipoint observations, we convert the observed time-series data into distance along the shock normal in the shock's rest frame. That conversion allows for a unique study of the relative spatial scales of the shock's various features, including the shock's growth rate, and how they evolve during the reformation cycle. Analysis indicates that: the growth rate increases during reformation, electron-scale physics play an important role in the shock reformation, and energy conversion processes also undergo the same cyclical periodicity as reformation. Strong, thin electron-kinetic-scale current sheets and large-amplitude electrostatic and electromagnetic waves are reported. Results highlight the critical cross-scale coupling between electron-kinetic- and ion-kinetic-scale processes and details of the nature of nonstationarity, shock-front reformation at collisionless, fast magnetosonic shocks.

Abstract:Shock-generated transients, such as hot flow anomalies (HFAs), upstream of planetary bow shocks, play a critical role in electron acceleration. Using multi-mission data from NASA's Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) and ESA's Cluster missions, we demonstrate the transmission of HFAs through Earth's quasi-parallel bow shock, associated with acceleration of electrons up to relativistic energies. Energetic electrons, initially accelerated upstream, are shown to remain broadly confined within the transmitted transient structures downstream, where betatron acceleration further boosts their energy due to elevated compression levels. Additionally, high-speed jets form at the compressive edges of HFAs, exhibiting a significant increase in dynamic pressure and potentially contributing to driving further localized compression. Our findings emphasize the efficiency of quasi-parallel shocks in driving particle acceleration far beyond the immediate shock transition region, expanding the acceleration region to a larger spatial domain. Finally, this study underscores the importance of multi-scale observational approach in understanding the convoluted processes behind collisionless shock physics and their broader implications.

Abstract:Earth's bow shock is a collisionless shock wave but entropy has never been directly measured across it. The plasma experiments on Cluster and Double Star measure 3D plasma distributions upstream and downstream of the bow shock allowing calculation of Boltzmann's entropy function H and his famous H theorem, dH/dt≤0. The collisionless Boltzmann (Vlasov) equation predicts that the total entropy does not change if the distribution function across the shock becomes nonthermal, but it allows changes in the entropy density. Here, we present the first direct measurements of entropy density changes across Earth's bow shock and show that the results generally support the model of the Vlasov analysis. These observations are a starting point for a more sophisticated analysis that includes 3D computer modeling of collisionless shocks with input from observed particles, waves, and turbulences.

Abstract:Studies of shocks have long suggested that a shock can undergo cyclically self-reformation in a time scale of ion cyclotron period. This process has been proposed as a primary mechanism for energy dissipation and energetic particle acceleration at shocks. Unambiguous observational evidence, however, has remained elusive. Here, we report direct observations for the self-reformation process of a collisionless, high Mach number, quasi-perpendicular shock using MMS measurements. We find that reflected ions by the old shock ramp form a clear phase-space vortex, which gives rise to a new ramp. The new ramp observed by MMS2 has not yet developed to a mature stage during the self-reformation, and is not strong enough to reflect incident ions. Consequently, these ions are only slightly slowed down and show a flat velocity profile from the new ramp all the way to the old one. The present results provide direct evidence for shock self-reformation, and also shed light on energy dissipation and energetic particle acceleration at collisionless shocks throughout the universe.
Non-thermal Electrons at the Earth's Bow Shock: A `Gradual' Event

Abstract:Earth's bow shock is known to produce non-thermal electrons which are generally observed as a `spike' in their flux profile. Here, in this paper, we present an analysis of electron and whistler wave properties for a quasi-perpendicular shock crossing that is supercritical, but subcritical to the so-called whistler critical Mach number, M$^w_{\rm crit}$, above which whistler waves cannot propagate upstream. We have found that the amplitudes of whistler waves increased exponentially as a function of time prior to the shock encounter, while the suprathermal ($>$ 2 keV) electron flux similarly increased with time, although with differing $e$-folding time scales. Comparison of the electron energy spectrum measured within the ramp with predictions from diffusive shock acceleration theory was poor, but the variation of pitch angle distribution showed scattering of non-thermal electrons in the upstream region. While not finding a specific mechanism to account for the electron diffusion, we suggest that the whistlers seen probably account for the differences observed between this `gradual' event and the `spike' events seen at shocks with no upstream whistlers.

Case Study of Solar Wind Suprathermal Electron Acceleration at the Earth's Bow Shock

Abstract:We present a case study of the in situ acceleration of solar wind suprathermal electrons at the two quasi-perpendicular-bow-shock crossings on 2015 November 4, combining the Wind 3D Plasma and Energetic Particle measurements of ambient solar wind suprathermal electrons and Magnetospheric Multiscale mission measurements of shocked suprathermal electrons. In both cases, the omnidirectional differential fluxes of shocked suprathermal electrons in the downstream exhibit a double-power-law energy spectrum with a spectral index of ∼3 at energies below a downward break εbrk near 40 keV and index of ∼6 at energies above, different from the unshocked suprathermal electrons observed in the ambient solar wind. At energies below (above) εbrk, the observed electron flux ratio between the downstream and ambient solar wind, JD/JA, peaks near 90° PA (becomes roughly isotropic). Electrons at εbrk have an average electron gyrodiameter (across bow shock) comparable to the shock thickness. These suggest that the bow-shock acceleration of suprathermal electrons is likely dominated by the shock drift acceleration mechanism. For electrons at energies below (above) εbrk, their estimated drift time appears to be roughly energy independent (decrease with energy), leading to the formation of a double-power-law spectrum substantially steepening at a break that’s determined by the shock thickness.

Abstract:The energy partition in high Mach number collisionless shock waves is central to a wide range of high-energy astrophysical environments. We present a new theoretical model for electron heating that accounts for the energy exchange between electrons and ions at the shock. The fundamental mechanism relies on the difference in inertia between electrons and ions, resulting in differential scattering of the particles off a decelerating magnetically dominated microturbulence across the shock transition. We show that the self-consistent interplay between the resulting ambipolar-type electric field and diffusive transport of electrons leads to efficient heating in the magnetic field produced by the Weibel instability in the high Mach number regime and is consistent with fully kinetic simulations. https://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevLett.132.265201 © 2024 American Physical Society

Abstract:The evolution of plasma entropy and the process of plasma energy re-distribution at the collisionless plasma shock front are evaluated based on the high temporal resolution data from the four MMS spacecraft during the crossing of the terrestrial bow shock. The ion distribution function has been separated into the populations with different characteristic behavior in the vicinity of the shock: the upstream core population, the reflected ions; the gyrating ions; the ions trapped in the vicinity of the shock, and the downstream core population. The values of ion and electron moments (density, bulk velocity, and temperature) have been determined separately for these populations. It was shown that the solar wind core population bulk velocity slows down mainly in the ramp with the electrostatic potential increase but not in the foot region as it was supposed. The reflected ion population determine the foot region properties, so that the proton temperature peak in the foot region is the effect of the relative motion of the different ion populations, rather than an actual increase in the thermal speed of any of the ion population. The ion entropy evaluated showed a significant increase across the shock the enhancement of the ion entropy occurs in the foot of the shock front and at the ramp, where the reflected ions are emerging in addition to the upstream solar wind ions, the anisotropy growing to generate the bursts of ion-scales electrostatic waves. The entropy of electrons across the shock doesn't show significant change - electron heating goes almost adiabatically.

Abstract:We present a statistical study of in-situ shock acceleration of ~1-100 keV solar wind suprathermal electrons at Earth&#8217;s bow shock, by using Wind 3D plasma and energetic particle measurements in ambient solar wind and MMS measurements in shock downstream. We pick out 74 shock cases (1 quasi-parallel shock, 73 quasi-perpendicular shocks) during 2015 October - 2017 January, and classify them into 4 types according to their energy spectra in downstream: type 0 (23 cases) without significant electron acceleration after shock passage, type 1 (24 cases) with power-law spectrum, J &#8733;&#949;&#946;1_dn, at ~0.8-10 keV, type 2 (16 cases) with power-law-spectrum at ~0.8-10 keV and significant flux enhancement above 30 keV, and type 3 (11 cases) with a clear double-power-law spectrum, J &#8733; &#949;&#946;1_dn (J &#8733; &#949;&#946;2_dn) when &#949; &#171; &#949;dntr&#160;&#160;(&#949; &#187; &#949;dntr), bending down at &#949;dntr ~20-90 keV. The spectral indexes at lower energies for type 1, type 2 and type 3, &#946;1dn, range from 2.5 to 5, while the spectral indexes at higher energies for type 3, &#946;2dn, range from 4 to 9, and all the spectral indexes have no significant correlation with those in ambient solar wind. Among the 4 types, type 3 is the strongest acceleration with the largest flux enhancement and the lowest &#946;1dn. Besides, we find that the flux ratio between downstream and ambient solar wind Jdn/Jab is field-perpendicular for most cases in both low and high energies, and Jdn/Jab (&#946;1dn) has positive (negative) correlations with &#952;Bn and magnetic field compression ratio, rB, which favor the shock drift acceleration (SDA) mechanism. However, Jdn/Jab has no correlation with the drift electric field Ed, while the normalized drift time, Td/Ttr, has a positive correlation with &#952;Bn, it suggests that &#952;Bn&#160;can influence electron drift time and thus influence the acceleration efficiency.
