Abstract:Collisionless shock waves are one of the main forms of energy conversion in space plasmas. They can directly or indirectly drive other universal plasma processes such as magnetic reconnection, turbulence, particle acceleration and wave phenomena. Collisionless shocks employ a myriad of kinetic plasma mechanisms to convert the kinetic energy of supersonic flows in space to other forms of energy (e.g., thermal plasma, energetic particles, or Poynting flux) in order for the flow to pass an immovable obstacle. The partitioning of energy downstream of collisionless shocks is not well understood, nor are the processes which perform energy conversion. While we, as the heliophysics community, have collected an abundance of observations of the terrestrial bow shock, instrument and mission-level limitations have made it impossible to quantify this partition, to establish the physics within the shock layer responsible for it, and to understand its dependence on upstream conditions. This paper stresses the need for the first ever spacecraft mission specifically designed and dedicated to the observation of both the terrestrial bow shock as well as Interplanetary shocks in the solar wind.

Abstract:The Earth’s bow shock is the best-known collisionless shock in space. Although much is known about the bow shock, the mechanisms of heating and thermalization processes still remain poorly understood. Collisionless shocks are different from ordinary fluid shocks, because a fraction of the incident solar wind is reflected from the bow shock and the transmitted particles are not immediately thermalized. The reflected particles interact with the incident solar wind producing waves and instabilities that can heat and accelerate particles to high energies. Some of the waves can grow to large amplitudes such as Short Large Amplitude Magnetic Structures. Other upstream nonlinear structures include hot flow anomalies and density holes. The upstream nonlinear structures subsequently convect Earthward with the SW and could impact the structure and dynamics of the bow shock. These observations have clearly indicated that the upstream dynamics are an integral part of the bow shock system. Although much has been learned about the behavior of Earth’s bow shock dynamics from the existing data, many fundamental questions remain not answered. This article will review observations of ion dynamics of Earth’s bow shock system, what we have learned from recent and past observations. We provide new perspectives from multi-spacecraft Cluster observations about the spatial and temporal variations including the fundamental shock heating, acceleration, and entropy generation processes.
Transmission of foreshock waves through Earth's bow shock

Abstract:The Earth's magnetosphere and its bow shock, which is formed by the interaction of the supersonic solar wind with the terrestrial magnetic field, constitute a rich natural laboratory enabling in situ investigations of universal plasma processes. Under suitable interplanetary magnetic field conditions, a foreshock with intense wave activity forms upstream of the bow shock. So-called 30 s waves, named after their typical period at Earth, are the dominant wave mode in the foreshock and play an important role in modulating the shape of the shock front and affect particle reflection at the shock. These waves are also observed inside the magnetosphere and down to the Earth's surface, but how they are transmitted through the bow shock remains unknown. By combining state-of-the-art global numerical simulations and spacecraft observations, we demonstrate that the interaction of foreshock waves with the shock generates earthward-propagating, fast-mode waves, which reach the magnetosphere. These findings give crucial insight into the interaction of waves with collisionless shocks in general and their impact on the downstream medium.
Electromagnetic waves and electron anisotropies downstream of supercritical interplanetary shocks

Abstract:We present waveform observations of electromagnetic lower hybrid and whistler waves with f_ci << f < f_ce downstream of four supercritical interplanetary (IP) shocks using the Wind search coil magnetometer. The whistler waves were observed to have a weak positive correlation between \partialB and normalized heat flux magnitude and an inverse correlation with T_eh/T_ec. All were observed simultaneous with electron distributions satisfying the whistler heat flux instability threshold and most with T_{perp,h}/T_{para,h} > 1.01. Thus, the whistler mode waves appear to be driven by a heat flux instability and cause perpendicular heating of the halo electrons. The lower hybrid waves show a much weaker correlation between \partialB and normalized heat flux magnitude and are often observed near magnetic field gradients. A third type of event shows fluctuations consistent with a mixture of both lower hybrid and whistler mode waves. These results suggest that whistler waves may indeed be regulating the electron heat flux and the halo temperature anisotropy, which is important for theories and simulations of electron distribution evolution from the sun to the earth.

Abstract:Turbulence is often enhanced when transmitted through a collisionless plasma shock. We investigate how the enhanced turbulent energy in the Earth's magnetosheath effectively dissipates via vortex arrays. This research topic is of great importance as it relates to particle energization at astrophysical shocks across the universe. Wave modes and intermittent coherent structures are the key candidate mechanisms for energy conversion in turbulent plasmas. Here, by comparing in-situ measurements in the Earth's magnetosheath with a theoretical model, we find the existence of vortex arrays at the transition between the downstream regions of the Earth's bow shock. Vortex arrays consist of quasi-orthogonal kinetic waves and exhibit both high volumetric filling factors and strong local energy conversion, thereby showing a greater dissipative energization than traditional waves and coherent structures. Therefore, we propose that vortex arrays are a promising mechanism for efficient energy conversion in the sheath regions downstream of astrophysical shocks.

Abstract:Shock waves and the associated phenomena generated by strongly ablating meteoroids with sizes greater than a few millimeters in the lower transitional flow regime of the Earth's atmosphere are the least explored aspect of meteor science. In this paper, we present a comprehensive review of literature covering meteor generated shock wave phenomena, from the aspect of both meteor science and hypersonic gas dynamics. The primary emphasis of this review is placed on the mechanisms and dynamics of the meteor shock waves. We discuss key aspects of both shock generation and propagation, including the great importance of the hydrodynamic shielding that develops around the meteoroid. In addition to this in-depth review, the discussion is extended to an overview of meteoroid fragmentation, followed by airburst type events associated with large, deep penetrating meteoroids. This class of objects has a significant potential to cause extensive material damage and even human casualties on the ground, and as such is of great interest to the planetary defense community. To date, no comprehensive model exists that accurately describes the flow field and shock wave formation of a strongly ablating meteoroid in the non-continuum flow regime. Thus, we briefly present the current state of numerical models that describe the comparatively slower flow of air over non-ablating bodies in the rarefied regime. In respect to the elusive nature of meteor generated shock wave detection, we also discuss relevant aspects and applications of meteor radar and infrasound studies as tools that can be utilized to study meteor shock waves and related phenomena.

Abstract:The high-speed solar wind decelerates as it travels through the Earth's bow shock, during which a portion of the incident flow energy is converted into the plasma thermal energy. However, the energy partition of plasma heating among different species, as well as the energy dissipation mechanism, remains elusive. In this paper, we quantify the plasma heating and the energy dissipation by calculating the pressure–strain interactions in 33 quasi-perpendicular bow shocks observed by the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft. Our results show that the Joule dissipation measured by J · E ′ and the quasi-viscous dissipation quantified by PiD are distinct in the examined shocks. We also reveal that ions gain more energy than electrons, and the compressive effect is more important than the incompressible channel in plasma heating. PiD contributed by the gyrotropic pressure tensor is consistently positive for electrons; however, there is no discernible distinction between the gyrotropic and nongyrotropic contribution to PiD for ions.

Non-thermal Electrons at the Earth's Bow Shock: A `Gradual' Event

Abstract:Earth's bow shock is known to produce non-thermal electrons which are generally observed as a `spike' in their flux profile. Here, in this paper, we present an analysis of electron and whistler wave properties for a quasi-perpendicular shock crossing that is supercritical, but subcritical to the so-called whistler critical Mach number, M$^w_{\rm crit}$, above which whistler waves cannot propagate upstream. We have found that the amplitudes of whistler waves increased exponentially as a function of time prior to the shock encounter, while the suprathermal ($>$ 2 keV) electron flux similarly increased with time, although with differing $e$-folding time scales. Comparison of the electron energy spectrum measured within the ramp with predictions from diffusive shock acceleration theory was poor, but the variation of pitch angle distribution showed scattering of non-thermal electrons in the upstream region. While not finding a specific mechanism to account for the electron diffusion, we suggest that the whistlers seen probably account for the differences observed between this `gradual' event and the `spike' events seen at shocks with no upstream whistlers.

The Importance of Heat Flux in Quasi-Parallel Collisionless Shocks

Abstract:Collisionless plasma shocks are a common feature of many space and astrophysical systems and are sources of high-energy particles and non-thermal emission, channeling as much as 20\% of the shock's energy into non-thermal particles. The generation and acceleration of these non-thermal particles have been extensively studied, however, how these particles feed back on the shock hydrodynamics has not been fully treated. This work presents the results of self-consistent hybrid particle-in-cell simulations that show the effect of self-generated non-thermal particle populations on the nature of collisionless, quasi-parallel shocks. They contribute to a significant heat flux density upstream of the shock. Non-thermal particles downstream of the shock leak into the upstream region, taking energy away from the shock. This increases the compression ratio, slows the shock down, and flattens the non-thermal population's spectral index for lower Mach number shocks. We incorporate this into a revised theory for the Rankine-Hugoniot jump conditions that include this effect and it shows excellent agreement with simulations. The results have the potential to explain discrepancies between predictions and observations in a wide range of systems, such as inaccuracies of predictions of arrival times of coronal mass ejections and the conflicting radio and x-ray observations of intracluster shocks. These effects will likely need to be included in fluid modeling to accurately predict shock evolution.

Abstract:Electrons are accelerated to non-thermal energies at shocks in space and astrophysical environments. While different mechanisms of electron acceleration have been proposed, it remains unclear how non-thermal electrons are produced out of the thermal plasma pool. Here, we report in situ evidence of pitch-angle scattering of non-thermal electrons by whistler waves at Earth’s bow shock. On 2015 November 4, the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission crossed the bow shock with an Alfvén Mach number ∼11 and a shock angle ∼84°. In the ramp and overshoot regions, MMS revealed bursty enhancements of non-thermal (0.5–2 keV) electron flux, correlated with high-frequency (0.2–0.4 , where is the cyclotron frequency) parallel-propagating whistler waves. The electron velocity distribution (measured at 30 ms cadence) showed an enhanced gradient of phase-space density at and around the region where the electron velocity component parallel to the magnetic field matched the resonant energy inferred from the wave frequency range. The flux of 0.5 keV electrons (measured at 1 ms cadence) showed fluctuations with the same frequency. These features indicate that non-thermal electrons were pitch-angle scattered by cyclotron resonance with the high-frequency whistler waves. However, the precise role of the pitch-angle scattering by the higher-frequency whistler waves and possible nonlinear effects in the electron acceleration process remains unclear.
Direct observations of cross-scale energy transfer in space plasmas

Abstract:The collisionless plasmas in space and astrophysical environments are intrinsically multiscale in nature, behaving as conducting fluids at macroscales and kinetically at microscales comparable to ion- and/or electron-gyroradii. A fundamental question in understanding the plasma dynamics is how energy is transported and dissipated across different scales. Here, we present spacecraft measurements in the solar wind upstream of the terrestrial bow shock, in which the macroscale ultra-low-frequency waves and microscale whistler waves simultaneously resonate with the ions. The ion acceleration from ultra-low-frequency waves leads to velocity distributions unstable to the growth of whistler waves, which in turn resonate with the electrons to complete cross-scale energy transfer. These observations, consistent with numerical simulations in the occurrence of phase-bunched ion and electron distributions, also highlight the importance of anomalous resonance, a nonlinear modification of the classical cyclotron resonance, in the cross-scale wave coupling and energy transfer processes.

Electron resonant interaction with whistler-mode waves around the Earth's bow shock I: the probabilistic approach

Abstract:Adiabatic heating of solar wind electrons at the Earth's bow shock and its foreshock region produces transversely anisotropic hot electrons that, in turn, generate intense high-frequency whistler-mode waves. These waves are often detected by spacecraft as narrow-band, electromagnetic emissions in the frequency range of [0.1,0.5] of the local electron gyrofrequency. Resonant interactions between these waves and electrons may cause electron acceleration and pitch-angle scattering, which can be important for creating the electron population that seeds shock drift acceleration. The high intensity and coherence of the observed whistler-mode waves prohibit the use of quasi-linear theory to describe their interaction with electrons. In this paper, we aim to develop a new theoretical approach to describe this interaction, that incorporates nonlinear resonant interactions, gradients of the background density and magnetic field, and the fine structure of the waveforms that usually consist of short, intense wave-packet trains. This is the first of two accompanying papers. It outlines a probabilistic approach to describe the wave-particle interaction. We demonstrate how the wave-packet size affects electron nonlinear resonance at the bow shock and foreshock regions, and how to evaluate electron distribution dynamics in such a system that is frequented by short, intense whistler-mode wave-packets. In the second paper, this probabilistic approach is merged with a mapping technique, which allows us to model systems containing short and long wave-packets.

Internal Shocks Hydrodynamics: the Collision of Two Cold Shells in Detail

Abstract:Emission in many astrophysical transients originates from a shocked fluid. A central engine typically produces an outflow with varying speeds, leading to internal collisions within the outflow at finite distances from the source. Each such collision produces a pair of forward and reverse shocks with the two shocked regions separated by a contact discontinuity (CD). As a useful approximation, we consider the head-on collision between two cold and uniform shells (a slower leading shell and a faster trailing shell) of finite radial width, and study the dynamics of shock propagation in planar geometry. We find significant differences between the forward and reverse shocks, in terms of their strength, internal energy production efficiency, and the time it takes for the shocks to sweep through the respective shells. We consider the subsequent propagation of rarefaction waves in the shocked regions and explore the cases where these waves can catch up with the shock fronts and thereby limit the internal energy dissipation. We demonstrate the importance of energy transfer from the trailing to leading shell through $pdV$ work across the CD. We outline the parameter space regions relevant for models of different transients,e.g., Gamma-ray burst (GRB) internal shock model, fast radio burst (FRB) blastwave model, Giant flare due to magnetars, and superluminous supernovae (SLSN) ejecta. We find that the reverse shock likely dominates the internal energy production for many astrophysical transients.

Electrostatic Waves and Electron Holes in Simulations of Low-Mach Quasi-Perpendicular Shocks

Abstract:Collisionless low Mach number shocks are abundant in astrophysical and space plasma environments, exhibiting complex wave activity and wave-particle interactions. In this paper, we present 2D Particle-in-Cell (PIC) simulations of quasi-perpendicular nonrelativistic ($\vsh \approx (5500-22000)$ km/s) low Mach number shocks, with a specific focus on studying electrostatic waves in the shock ramp and the precursor regions. In these shocks, an ion-scale oblique whistler wave creates a configuration with two hot counter-streaming electron beams, which drive unstable electron acoustic waves (EAWs) that can turn into electrostatic solitary waves (ESWs) at the late stage of their evolution. By conducting simulations with periodic boundaries, we show that EAW properties agree with linear dispersion analysis. The characteristics of ESWs in shock simulations, including their wavelength and amplitude, depend on the shock velocity. When extrapolated to shocks with realistic velocities ($\vsh \approx 300$ km/s), the ESW wavelength is reduced to one tenth of the electron skin depth and the ESW amplitude is anticipated to surpass that of the quasi-static electric field by more than a factor of 100. These theoretical predictions may explain a discrepancy, between PIC and satellite measurements, in the relative amplitude of high- and low-frequency electric field fluctuations.

Abstract:Abstract The whistler-mode wave extending from the fast-magnetosonic wave branch is a fundamental perturbation of electromagnetic fields and plasmas in various environments including planetary space, laboratory, and astrophysics. The origin and evolution of the waves is a long-standing question due to the limited instrumental capability in resolving highly variable plasma and electromagnetic fields. Here, we analyze observational data with a high time resolution from the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft in front of the terrestrial bow shock (e.g., foreshock). We develop a novel approach to extract the three-dimensional fluctuating electron velocity distributions (δf e( V )) from their background (f e0( V )), and have successfully captured the coherent resonance between fluctuating electrons (δf e( V )) and wavelike electromagnetic fields (δ B , δ E ) at an unprecedentedly high frequency (>1 Hz) for investigating wave–particle interactions. We provide that the unstable whistler wave grows rapidly over a timescale that is much shorter than the proton gyro-period. Regarding the energy origin for the waves, we find the ion distributions consisting of the solar wind ion flows and the ion beams reflected from the shock play crucial roles in providing the free energy and determining the eigenmode disturbances of fields and electrons. The quantification of wave growth rate and the characterization of wave–particle interactions for the instability driver can significantly advance the understandings of wave evolution and energy conversion between multisource multispecies particles and wave electromagnetic fields.
