Abstract:We present a statistical analysis of electrostatic solitary waves observed aboard Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft in the Earth's magnetosheath. Applying single-spacecraft interferometry to several hundred solitary waves collected in about two minute intervals, we show that almost all of them have the electrostatic potential of positive polarity and propagate quasi-parallel to the local magnetic field with plasma frame velocities of the order of 100 km/s. The solitary waves have typical parallel half-widths from 10 to 100 m that is between 1 and 10 Debye lengths and typical amplitudes of the electrostatic potential from 10 to 200 mV that is between 0.01 and 1\% of local electron temperature. The solitary waves are associated with quasi-Maxwellian ion velocity distribution functions, and their plasma frame velocities are comparable with ion thermal speed and well below electron thermal speed. We argue that the solitary waves of positive polarity are slow electron holes and estimate the time scale of their acceleration, which occurs due to interaction with ions, to be of the order of one second. The observation of slow electron holes indicates that their lifetime was shorter than the acceleration time scale. We argue that multi-spacecraft interferometry applied previously to these solitary waves is not applicable because of their too-short spatial scales. The source of the slow electron holes and the role in electron-ion energy exchange remain to be established.

Abstract:Magnetic holes at the ion-to-electron kinetic scale (KSMHs) are one of the extremely small intermittent structures generated in turbulent magnetized plasmas. In recent years, the explorations of KSMHs have made substantial strides, driven by the ultra-high-precision observational data gathered from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission. This review paper summarizes the up-to-date characteristics of the KSMHs observed in Earth's turbulent magnetosheath, as well as their potential impacts on space plasma. This review starts by introducing the fundamental properties of the KSMHs, including observational features, particle behaviors, scales, geometries, and distributions in terrestrial space. Researchers have discovered that KSMHs display a quasi-circular electron vortex-like structure attributed to electron diamagnetic drift. These electrons exhibit noticeable non-gyrotropy and undergo acceleration. The occurrence rate of KSMH in the Earth's magnetosheath is significantly greater than in the solar wind and magnetotail, suggesting the turbulent magnetosheath is a primary source region. Additionally, KSMHs have also been generated in turbulence simulations and successfully reproduced by the kinetic equilibrium models. Furthermore, KSMHs have demonstrated their ability to accelerate electrons by a novel non-adiabatic electron acceleration mechanism, serve as an additional avenue for energy dissipation during magnetic reconnection, and generate diverse wave phenomena, including whistler waves, electrostatic solitary waves, and electron cyclotron waves in space plasma. These results highlight the magnetic hole's impact such as wave-particle interaction, energy cascade/dissipation, and particle acceleration/heating in space plasma. We end this paper by summarizing these discoveries, discussing the generation mechanism, similar structures, and observations in the Earth's magnetotail and solar wind, and presenting a future extension perspective in this active field.

Abstract:Kinetic‐size magnetic holes (KSMHs) in the turbulent magnetosheath are statistically investigated using high time resolution data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission. The KSMHs with short duration (i.e., <0.5 s) have their cross section smaller than the ion gyroradius. Superposed epoch analysis of all events reveals that an increase in the electron density and total temperature significantly increases (resp. decrease) the electron perpendicular (resp. parallel) temperature and an electron vortex inside KSMHs. Electron fluxes at ~90° pitch angles with selective energies increase in the KSMHs are trapped inside KSMHs and form the electron vortex due to their collective motion. All these features are consistent with the electron vortex magnetic holes obtained in 2‐D and 3‐D particle‐in‐cell simulations, indicating that the observed KSMHs seem to be best explained as electron vortex magnetic holes. It is furthermore shown that KSMHs are likely to heat and accelerate the electrons.

Abstract:Plasma vortices are ubiquitous in space and play important roles in the transmission of energy and mass at various scales. For small-scale plasma vortices on the order of ion gyroradius, however, their properties and characteristics remain unclear. Here, we provide unique findings of an ion-scale vortex observed in the Earth's magnetosheath. The vortex is generated by the ion diamagnetic drift associated with an isolated magnetic hole (MH). The magnetic field in the axial direction is reversed in the vortex center, which is consistent with ring-shaped currents carried by the ions. The field strength becomes very weak (<1 nT) at the field reversal region, although the ion distributions vary rather continuously across the entire structure. A kinetic equilibrium model is then applied to reconstruct the above features. These findings can help us understand the plasma vortex and MH from magnetohydrodynamics to kinetic scales.
The dynamics of electron holes in current sheets

Abstract:We present 1.5D Vlasov code simulations of the dynamics of electron holes in non-uniform magnetic and electric fields typical of current sheets and, particularly, of the Earth's magnetotail current sheet. The simulations show that spatial width and amplitude of electron holes do not substantially vary in the course of propagation, but there arises a double layer localized around the electron hole and manifested as a drop of the electrostatic potential along the electron hole. We demonstrate that electron holes produced around the neutral plane of a current sheet slow down in the course of propagation toward the current sheet boundaries. The leading contribution to electron hole braking is provided by the non-uniform magnetic field, though electrostatic fields typical of the current sheets do provide a noticeable contribution. The simulations also show that electron holes with larger amplitudes are slowed faster. The simulation results suggest that some of slow electron holes recently reported in the Earth's plasma sheet boundary layer may appear due to braking of initially fast electron holes in the course of propagation in the current sheet.

Abstract:We report on the observations of an electron vortex magnetic hole corresponding to a new type of coherent structure in the turbulent magnetosheath plasma using the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission data. The magnetic hole is characterized by a magnetic depression, a density peak, a total electron temperature increase (with a parallel temperature decrease but a perpendicular temperature increase), and strong currents carried by the electrons. The current has a dip in the core region and a peak in the outer region of the magnetic hole. The estimated size of the magnetic hole is about 0.23 rho(i) (similar to 30 rho(e)) in the quasi-circular cross-section perpendicular to its axis, where rho(i) and rho(e) are respectively the proton and electron gyroradius. There are no clear enhancements seen in high-energy electron fluxes. However, there is an enhancement in the perpendicular electron fluxes at 90 degrees pitch angle inside the magnetic hole, implying that the electrons are trapped within it. The variations of the electron velocity components V-em and V-en suggest that an electron vortex is formed by trapping electrons inside the magnetic hole in the cross-section in the M-N plane. These observations demonstrate the existence of a new type of coherent structures behaving as an electron vortex magnetic hole in turbulent space plasmas as predicted by recent kinetic simulations.

Abstract:Magnetic holes (MHs), characteristic structures where the magnetic field magnitude decreases significantly, have been frequently observed in space plasmas. Particularly, small size magnetic holes (SSMHs) which the scale is less than or close to the proton gyroradius are recently detected in the magnetospheric plasma sheet. In this study of Cluster observations, by the timing method, the minimum directional difference (MDD) method, and the spatiotemporal difference (STD) method, we obtain the propagation velocity of SSMHs in the plasma flow frame. Furthermore, based on electron magnetohydrodynamics (EMHD) theory we calculate the velocity, width, and depth of the electron solitary wave and compare it to SSMH observations. The result shows a good accord between the theory and the observation.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Magnetic holes are ubiquitous in Earth’s magnetosphere plasma system. Understanding their formation mechanisms and influence to background plasma is crucial for insight into energy conversion in near-earth space environments. Here, we present unambiguous evidence that a kinetic-scale magnetic hole occurs in the separatrix region of asymmetry reconnection at the Earth’s magnetopause, implying that the connection between magnetic holes and reconnection should be more extensive. By taking advantage of high-resolution measurements, we show that electrons along the separatrix region are trapped and significantly thermalized by magnetic hole. Observations suggest that separatrix region with significant shear flow can provide favourable conditions for stable magnetic holes, which can further continuously generate high-energy electrons.

Abstract:Using the Magnetospheric Multiscale spacecraft, we report observations of the pressure‐balanced structures in the form of slow magnetosonic waves rather than the mirror mode description in the Earth's magnetosheath. The slow magnetosonic waves are identified with three criteria: (1) The significant inverse correlation coefficients between the plasma thermal pressure (Pplasma) and the magnetic pressure (Pmag) with the constant total pressure (Ptot = Pplasma+Pmag); (2) the wave frequency Doppler shifted to the plasma flow frame is not zero to within the measurement error, which distinguishes the slow magnetosonic mode from the mirror mode; and (3) the observational dispersion relation is in a reasonable agreement with the linear theoretical result of slow magnetosonic waves. We find that slow magnetosonic waves can propagate over many wavelengths with negligible decay due to their transverse propagation which dramatically decreases their kinetic damping rate. Furthermore, we propose a possible generation mechanism that a high‐speed ion beam resonates with the local ion acoustic mode contributing to the inverse Landau damping process that converts particle energy into waves.
Velocity Space Signatures of Resonant Energy Transfer between Whistler Waves and Electrons in the Earth's Magnetosheath

Abstract:Wave--particle interactions play a crucial role in transferring energy between electromagnetic fields and charged particles in space and astrophysical plasmas. Despite the prevalence of different electromagnetic waves in space, there is still a lack of understanding of fundamental aspects of wave--particle interactions, particularly in terms of energy flow and velocity-space characteristics. In this study, we combine a novel quasilinear model with observations from the Magnetospheric Multiscale (MMS) mission to reveal the signatures of resonant interactions between electrons and whistler waves in magnetic holes, which are coherent structures often found in the Earth's magnetosheath. We investigate the energy transfer rates and velocity-space characteristics associated with Landau and cyclotron resonances between electrons and slightly oblique propagating whistler waves. In the case of our observed magnetic hole, the loss of electron kinetic energy primarily contributes to the growth of whistler waves through the $n=-1$ cyclotron resonance, where $n$ is the order of the resonance expansion in linear Vlasov--Maxwell theory. The excitation of whistler waves leads to a reduction of the temperature anisotropy and parallel heating of the electrons. Our study offers a new and self-consistent understanding of resonant energy transfer in turbulent plasmas.
