Abstract:We present 1.5D Vlasov code simulations of the dynamics of electron holes in non-uniform magnetic and electric fields typical of current sheets and, particularly, of the Earth's magnetotail current sheet. The simulations show that spatial width and amplitude of electron holes do not substantially vary in the course of propagation, but there arises a double layer localized around the electron hole and manifested as a drop of the electrostatic potential along the electron hole. We demonstrate that electron holes produced around the neutral plane of a current sheet slow down in the course of propagation toward the current sheet boundaries. The leading contribution to electron hole braking is provided by the non-uniform magnetic field, though electrostatic fields typical of the current sheets do provide a noticeable contribution. The simulations also show that electron holes with larger amplitudes are slowed faster. The simulation results suggest that some of slow electron holes recently reported in the Earth's plasma sheet boundary layer may appear due to braking of initially fast electron holes in the course of propagation in the current sheet.

What problem does this paper attempt to address?
The problem that this paper attempts to solve is the dynamic behavior of electron holes in non - uniform magnetic and electric fields. Specifically, the researchers simulated the propagation characteristics and evolution process of electron holes in an environment similar to the Earth's magnetotail current sheet through 1.5D Vlasov code. The paper focuses on the following aspects: 1. **Changes in the spatial width and amplitude of electron holes**: The researchers found that during the propagation process, the spatial width and amplitude of electron holes did not change significantly, but a double - layer structure was formed around the electron holes, manifested as a decrease in electrostatic potential along the direction of the electron holes. 2. **Deceleration mechanism of electron holes**: Electron holes will gradually decelerate when propagating towards the boundary of the current sheet. The main deceleration mechanism is the effect of non - uniform magnetic fields, although the electrostatic field in the current sheet also makes a significant contribution. In addition, electron holes with larger amplitudes decelerate more quickly. 3. **Formation of slow electron holes**: Simulation results show that some slow electron holes observed in the boundary layer of the Earth's plasma sheet may be formed by the deceleration of the initial fast electron holes during the propagation in the current sheet. ### Specific problem analysis - **Propagation characteristics of electron holes**: - During the propagation of electron holes in non - uniform magnetic and electric fields, their spatial width and amplitude remain relatively stable. - A double - layer structure is formed around the electron holes, manifested as a decrease in electrostatic potential. - **Deceleration mechanism**: - Non - uniform magnetic fields are the main factor causing the deceleration of electron holes. - The electrostatic field in the current sheet also makes a significant contribution to the deceleration of electron holes. - Electron holes with larger amplitudes decelerate more quickly. - **Source of slow electron holes**: - Some slow electron holes observed in the boundary layer of the Earth's plasma sheet may be formed by the deceleration of the initial fast electron holes during the propagation. ### Mathematical formulas - **Initial electrostatic potential of electron holes**: \[ \Phi|_{t = 0}=\Phi_0\cosh^{- 2}\left(\frac{s}{D}\right) \] where \(\Phi_0\) is the amplitude of the electron hole and \(D\) is the spatial width of the electron hole. - **Background magnetic field and electric potential**: \[ B(s)=\begin{cases}1 + 2\left(\frac{|s|-s_{\text{min}}}{s_{\text{max}}-s_{\text{min}}}\right)^2&\text{if }s_{\text{min}}<|s|\leq s_0\\2 - 2\left(\frac{|s|-s_{\text{max}}}{s_{\text{max}}-s_{\text{min}}}\right)^2&\text{if }s_0<|s|\leq s_{\text{max}}\end{cases} \] \[ \phi(s)\approx-\ln\left(\frac{A_0}{A(s)}\right) \] where \(s_{\text{min}} = 35\), \(s_{\text{max}} = 295\), \(s_0=(s_{\text{max}}+s_{\text{min}})/2 = 165\), \(A(s)=1+(A_0 - 1)/B(s)\). - **Electron velocity distribution function**: \[ f_e(v_{\parallel},\mu,s)=A_0(2\pi)^{-3/2}\exp\left(-\frac{v_{\parallel}^2}{2}+\phi(s)-A(s)\mu B(s)\right) \] These formulas and simulation results together reveal the dynamic behavior of electron holes in non - uniform magnetic and electric fields, which is helpful for understanding the Earth's magnetotail current sheet.
