Abstract:Magnetic cavities are sudden depressions of magnetic field strength widely observed in the space plasma environments, which are often accompanied by plasma density and pressure enhancement. To describe these cavities, a self-consistent kinetic model has been proposed as an equilibrium solution to the Vlasov-Maxwell equations. However, observations from the Magnetospheric Multi-Scale (MMS) constellation have shown the existence of helical magnetic cavities characterized by the presence of azimuthal magnetic field, which could not be reconstructed by the aforementioned model. Here, we take into account another invariant of motion, the canonical axial momentum, to construct the particle distributions and accordingly modify the equilibrium model. The reconstructed magnetic cavity shows excellent agreement with the MMS1 observations not only in the electromagnetic field and plasma moment profiles but also in electron pitch-angle distributions. With the same set of parameters, the model also predicts signatures of the neighboring MMS3 spacecraft, matching its observations satisfactorily.

Abstract:Plasma vortices are ubiquitous in space and play important roles in the transmission of energy and mass at various scales. For small-scale plasma vortices on the order of ion gyroradius, however, their properties and characteristics remain unclear. Here, we provide unique findings of an ion-scale vortex observed in the Earth's magnetosheath. The vortex is generated by the ion diamagnetic drift associated with an isolated magnetic hole (MH). The magnetic field in the axial direction is reversed in the vortex center, which is consistent with ring-shaped currents carried by the ions. The field strength becomes very weak (<1 nT) at the field reversal region, although the ion distributions vary rather continuously across the entire structure. A kinetic equilibrium model is then applied to reconstruct the above features. These findings can help us understand the plasma vortex and MH from magnetohydrodynamics to kinetic scales.

Modelling 3D magnetic networks in a realistic solar atmosphere

Abstract:The magnetic network extending from the photosphere (solar radius $\simeq R_\odot$) to lower corona ($R_\odot + 10$ Mm) plays an important role in the heating mechanisms of the solar atmosphere. Here we further develop the models with realistic open magnetic flux tubes of the authors in order to model more complicated configurations. Closed magnetic loops, and combinations of closed and open magnetic flux tubes are modelled. These are embedded within a stratified atmosphere, derived from observationally motivated semi-empirical and data-driven models subject to solar gravity and capable of spanning from the photosphere up into the chromosphere and lower corona. Constructing a magnetic field comprising self-similar magnetic flux tubes, an analytic solution for the kinetic pressure and plasma density is derived. Combining flux tubes of opposite polarity it is possible to create a steady background magnetic field configuration modelling a solar atmosphere exhibiting realistic stratification. The result can be applied to SOHO/MDI and SDO/HMI and other magnetograms from the solar surface, upon which photospheric motions can be simulated to explore the mechanism of energy transport. We demonstrate this powerful and versatile method with an application to Helioseismic and Magnetic Imager data.

The magnetic structure of Saturn's magnetosheath

Abstract:A planet's magnetosheath extends from downstream of its bow shock up to the magnetopause where the solar wind flow is deflected around the magnetosphere and the solar wind embedded magnetic field lines are draped. This makes the region an important site for plasma turbulence, instabilities, reconnection and plasma depletion layers. A relatively high Alfvén Mach number solar wind and a polar-flattened magnetosphere make the magnetosheath of Saturn both physically and geometrically distinct from the Earth's. The polar flattening is predicted to affect the magnetosheath magnetic field structure and thus the solar wind-magnetosphere interaction. Here we investigate the magnetic field in the magnetosheath with the expectation that polar flattening is manifested in the overall draping pattern. We compare an accumulation of Cassini data between 2004 and 2010 with global magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) simulations and an analytical model representative of a draped field between axisymmetric boundaries. The draping patterns measured are well captured and in broad agreement for given upstream conditions with those of the MHD simulations (which include polar flattening). The deviations from the analytical model, based on no polar flattening, suggest that non-axisymmetry is invariably a key feature of the magnetosphere's global structure. Our results show a comprehensive overview of the configuration of the magnetic field in a non-axisymmetric magnetosheath as revealed by Cassini. We anticipate our assessment to provide an insight to this barely studied interface between a high Alfvénic bow shock and a dynamic magnetosphere.

Global Survey and Empirical Model of Fast Magnetosonic Waves over Their Full Frequency Range in Earth's Inner Magnetosphere

Abstract:We investigate the global distribution and provide empirical models of fast magnetosonic waves using the combined observations by the magnetometer and waveform receiver on board Van Allen Probes. The magnetometer measurements of magnetosonic waves indicate a significant wave power within the frequency range from the helium gyrofrequency to 20 Hz at L >= 4 in the afternoon sector, both inside and outside the plasmapause. The waveform receiver measurements indicate a significant wave power from 20 Hz to the lower hybrid resonance frequency at L <= 5.5 near the dayside outside the plasmapause or in the afternoon sector inside the plasmapause. The sum of the wave powers from the two instruments provides the wave power distribution over the complete frequency range. The most significant root-mean-square wave amplitude of magnetosonic waves is typically 100-200 pT inside or outside the plasmapause with a magnetic local time coverage of 30-50% during geomagnetically active times when AE* > 500 nT. The magnetosonic wave frequency increases with decreasing L shell following the trend of the proton gyrofrequency outside the plasmapause, indicating a close relation with the local wave generation. Inside the plasmapause, the dependence of wave frequency on L shell is weaker, and the wave frequency is more stable across L shells, indicating the wave propagation effects from the source located at higher L shells. We have performed polynomial fits of the global magnetosonic wave distribution and wave frequency spectra, which are useful in future radiation belt simulations.

Abstract:Small-scale magnetic holes are usually sub -proton magnetic structures characterized by a significant decrease of magnetic field magnitude, and then restoring to the original background magnetic field strength. These structures are found to be closely related to energy conversion and particle acceleration, magnetic reconnection, and turbulence at the kinetic scale. Recently, these magnetic holes are reported in Venusian and Martian magnetosheath. With 4 -months data of MAVEN (Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN), the occurrence rates of small-scale magnetic holes in the Martian magnetosheath are investigated in this work. Our results show that smallscale magnetic holes are mainly detected in the plasma with the ambient magnetic field magnitude 4 <= B <= 12 nT, plasma bulk velocity range from 250 km center dot s (1) to 450 km center dot s (1), and plasma density 3 <= N <= 12 cm (3). In such environment, small-scale magnetic holes have a relatively higher occurrence rate when the background solar wind velocity is relatively faster and the background magnetic field is relatively weaker, and they are relatively concentrated in the background density between 6 similar to 9 cm (3). This parameter range may be related to the formation mechanism of smallscale magnetic holes. In addition, the occurrence rates of the small-scale magnetic holes near the center magnetosheath are higher than those in the flanks. These results indicate that the Martian magnetosheath is a potential source of small-scale magnetic holes.

Abstract:Electron vortices are usually embedded within different magnetic structures in space plasmas. The effects, including the nonideal electric field, energy dissipation and magnetic field, of electron vortices on these magnetic structures are still unclear. Utilizing the unprecedented high‐resolution data from the Magnetospheric Multiscale mission in the terrestrial magnetosheath, we statistically investigate these effects on magnetic structures. Both nonideal electric fields and energy dissipation have no obvious correlations with the scales of electron vortices. However, compared to the scales, stronger correlations are found between the vorticities of electron vortices and nonideal electric fields, and energy dissipation, respectively. Most of electron vortices have positive contributions to magnetic fields of magnetic structures, such as strengthening the decrease (or increase) of Bt for current sheets and magnetic holes (or flux ropes and magnetic peaks). Our results reveal that the electron vortices play an important role in the evolution of magnetic structures.

Abstract:In the past the global solar wind interaction with Venus has been treated principally with gas dynamic models. While this gas dynamic treatment has proven successful in modeling some of the global characteristics of the interaction, this model does not include the magnetic barrier in a self-consistent manner. This magnetic barrier is formed in the inner magnetosheath where it transfers solar wind momentum flux to the obstacle via magnetic pressure. In this study we examine the extent to which the gas dynamic fluid approximation describes the magnetic field in the dayside Venus magnetosheath by comparing with two gas dynamic models, one which matches the observed ionopause location and one which matches the bow shock location. We find that each model predicts the field profile reasonably well in the vicinity of the matched bow shock or ionopause but neither model provides an adequate model over the entire range from the ionopause to the bow shock.
