Abstract:A study of the interaction of solar wind magnetic field rotations with the Earth's magnetosphere is performed. For this event there is, for the first time, a full coverage over the dayside magnetosphere with multiple (multi) spacecraft missions from dawn to dusk, combined with ground magnetometers, radar and an auroral camera, this gives a unique coverage of the response of the Earth's magnetosphere. After a long period of southward IMF Bz and high dynamic pressure of the solar wind, the Earth's magnetosphere is eroded and compressed and reacts quickly to the turning of the magnetic field. We use data from the solar wind monitors ACE and Wind and from magnetospheric missions Cluster, THEMIS, DoubleStar and Geotail to investigate the behaviour of the magnetic rotations as they move through the bow shock and magnetosheath. The response of the magnetosphere is investigated through ground magnetometers and auroral keograms. It is found that the solar wind magnetic field drapes over the magnetopause, while still co-moving with the plasma flow at the flanks. The magnetopause reacts quickly to IMF Bz changes, setting up field aligned currents, poleward moving aurorae and strong ionospheric convection. Timing of the structures between the solar wind, magnetosheath and the ground shows that the advection time of the structures, using the solar wind velocity, correlates well with the timing differences between the spacecraft. The reaction time of the magnetopause and the ionospheric current systems to changes in the magnetosheath Bz seem to be almost immediate, allowing for the advection of the structure measured by the spacecraft closest to the magnetopause.
Initial responses of magnetospheric plasma flows to the dynamic pressure enhancements

Abstract:Using the solar wind data obtained from OMNI web, we find 1778 dynamic pressure enhancement events during Mar 2007 to Dec 2012. Then we check the responses of Magnetospheric plasma flows to these events and find 64 responses show clear sudden impulse (SI) signatures from THEMIS observations. We superpose the initial responses of the flows in one plot to find two flow vortices exist at two sides of the near earth magnetotail respectively, which was not observed in-situ before. There are some ULF wave observations after initial responses.

Abstract:On 2008‐07‐11, the THEMIS spacecraft, separated both longitudinally and radially, traversed the dayside low‐latitude boundary layer (LLBL) under extended northward IMF. They detected southward flows of magnetosheath plasma from magnetopause reconnection poleward of the northern cusp, which were cold‐dense, and had southward velocity ∼100 km/s and longitudinal extent >3 RE. These features all agree with a global MHD simulation of the magnetosphere for similar conditions, in which under large geomagnetic dipole tilt, an LLBL forms via poleward‐of‐the‐cusp reconnection first in the summer hemisphere and later in the other. Contrary to the simulation, however, the observed LLBL was mostly magnetically closed, characterized by balanced field‐aligned and anti‐field‐aligned electron fluxes, and was less thick (≤0.5 RE). The former suggests comparable reconnection rate in both hemispheres, while the latter suggests the actual reconnection rate being lower, and/or the plasma transport toward the magnetotail being faster, than in the simulation.
Magnetopause Indentation Induced by the Magnetosheath Fast Flow

Abstract:Recent studies indicated that the magnetopause indentation plays an important role in magnetosphere-ionosphere coupling. Confirmation of magnetopause indentation requires joint observations with multiple satellites. So far, there have been few magnetopause indentation events reported. In this paper, a case of magnetopause indentation induced by fast magnetosheath flow is reported with multiple spacecraft analysis based on the observations of five THEMIS probes. During the interval from 10:00 UT to 10:45 UT on 21 July 2007, when the five THEMIS probes are located near the subsolar magnetopause, a fast anti-sunward flow (with a velocity of 400 km·s-1) was observed in the magnetosheath just before THEMIS crossed the magnetopause to the magnetosphere. A magnetopause local indentation event was identified by comparing the nominal magnetopause and the tangential magnetopause plane calculated using the MVA method. In order to explore the origin of this magnetosheath fast flow, solar wind data observed by WIND satellite at L1 point were analyzed. It is found that the solar wind is very stable during this period. The Interplanetary Magnetic Field (IMF) is mainly radial and the component of the north-south direction is very small. It is speculated that the generation of this magnetosheath fast anti-sunward flow may be related to the radial IMF.

Abstract:In this study, a new analytical model to describe the time‐dependent subsolar magnetopause motion under interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) southward turning has been developed. This model, based on the scenario of magnetopause erosion due to magnetic reconnection, can be approximated by both linear and non‐linear functions. The linear function is simplified under the assumption of constant magnetopause erosion under southward IMF, and the non‐linear function is derived by assuming that the magnetopause erosion decays exponentially. In the limit of a short time, the non‐linear function is essentially the same as the linear function. By comparing with global MHD simulations, the linear function performs well within the first ten minutes, and the error then increases with time. The non‐linear function describes the magnetopause motion more accurately with respect to, and consistent with simulations for a time interval of ∼40 minutes. This model has also been successfully applied to data‐driven simulations of the 17 March 2015 geomagnetic storm event, suggesting the possible applicability of this model in reality.

Abstract:We present a newly developed global magnetohydrodynamic(MHD) model to study the responses of the Earth’s magnetosphere to the solar wind. The model is established by using the space-time conservation element and solution element(CESE) method in general curvilinear coordinates on a six-component grid system. As a preliminary study, this paper is to present the model’s numerical results of the quasi-steady state and the dynamics of the Earth’s magnetosphere under steady solar wind flow with due northward interplanetary magnetic field(IMF). The model results are found to be in good agreement with those published by other numerical magnetospheric models.

A Time-Dependent Three-Dimensional Magnetopause Model Based on Quasi-Elastodynamic Theory

Abstract:The interaction between the solar wind and the Earth’s magnetosphere is one of the most important research topics in space weather and space plasma physics. The finding of the exact magnetopause position significantly enhances our knowledge of magnetospheric response to solar wind variations. While numerous magnetopause models have been constructed in the past decades, a substantial portion of them remains time-independent models, posing limitations in elucidating the dynamic movement of the magnetopause under varying solar wind conditions. This study pioneers the establishment of a time-dependent three-dimensional magnetopause model grounded in the quasi-elastodynamic pressure theory, named the POS (Position, Overall oscillation and Surface wave like-structure) model. In contrast to the existing time-dependent magnetopause models (except for numerical simulations), the POS model transcends the one-dimensional framework, providing a real-time depiction of magnetopause position and shape alterations. The model's validity is substantiated through comparisons with satellite observation. Based on an extensive dataset of satellite magnetopause crossings (exceeding 40,000 magnetopause crossing events), the POS model exhibits superior predictive accuracy (as evaluated by root-mean-square error) compared to six widely employed magnetopause models. Remarkably, the POS model demonstrates heightened efficacy under highly disturbed solar wind conditions as well as in high-latitude and flank region of magnetopause and it possesses characteristics as predictive accuracy, concise formulation, and fast computational speed. The introduction of a time-dependent three-dimensional dynamic magnetopause model not only advances our comprehension of the physical processes in space plasma and enhances our predictive capabilities for space weather on the Earth but also provides valuable insights into the dynamic processes in the magnetospheres of other planets.

Data-driven MHD simulation of successive solar plasma eruptions

Abstract:Solar flares and plasma eruptions are sudden releases of magnetic energy stored in the plasma atmosphere. To understand the physical mechanisms governing their occurrences, three-dimensional magnetic fields from the photosphere up to the corona must be studied. The solar photospheric magnetic fields are observable, whereas the coronal magnetic fields cannot be measured. One method for inferring coronal magnetic fields is performing data-driven simulations, which involves time-series observational data of the photospheric magnetic fields with the bottom boundary of magnetohydrodynamic simulations. We developed a data-driven method in which temporal evolutions of the observational vector magnetic field can be reproduced at the bottom boundary in the simulation by introducing an inverted velocity field. This velocity field is obtained by inversely solving the induction equation and applying an appropriate gauge transformation. Using this method, we performed a data-driven simulation of successive small eruptions observed by the Solar Dynamics Observatory and the Solar Magnetic Activity Telescope in November 2017. The simulation well reproduced the converging motion between opposite-polarity magnetic patches, demonstrating successive formation and eruptions of helical flux ropes.

Abstract:The magnetosphere is the outermost layer of the geospace, and the interaction of the solar wind with the magnetosphere is the key element of the space weather cause-and-effect chain process from the Sun to Earth, which is one of the most challenging scientific problems in the geospace weather study. The nonlinearity, multiple component, and time-dependent nature of the geospace make it very difficult to describe the physical process in geospace using traditional analytic analysis approach. Numerical simulations, a new research tool developed in recent decades, have a deep impact on the theory and application of the geospace. MHD simulations started at the end of the 1970s, and the initial study was limited to two-dimensional (2D) cases. Due to the intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) characteristics of the geospace, 3D MHD simulations emerged in the 1980s, in an attempt to model the large-scale structures and fundamental physical processes in the magnetosphere. They started to combine with the space exploration missions in the 1990s and make comparisons with observations. Physics-based space weather forecast models started to be developed in the 21st century. Currently only a few space-power countries such as USA and Japan have developed 3D magnetospheric MHD models. With the rapid advance of space science in China, we have developed a new global MHD model, namely PPMLR-MHD, which has high order spatial accuracy and low numerical dissipation. In this review, we will briefly introduce the global 3D MHD modeling, especially the PPMLR-MHD code, and summarize our recent work based on the PPMLR-MHD model, with an emphasis on the interaction of interplanetary shocks with the magnetosphere, large-scale current systems, reconnection voltage and transpolar potential drop, and Kelvin-Helmholtz (K-H) instability at the magnetopause.

Statistics on the Magnetosheath Properties Related to Magnetopause Magnetic Reconnection

Abstract:Magnetosheath properties, particularly those related to magnetopause magnetic reconnection (MR), are investigated in this study. (1) Asymmetries are found to exist in the distributions of plasma and magnetic field parameters in the magnetosheath. These asymmetries are related to the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) orientation, and they are produced either on the bow shock or inside the magnetosheath. Thus, one must be very cautious in directly using the upstream solar wind and IMF properties as the magnetopause MR initiation conditions, since the magnetosheath parameters are not the same everywhere. (2) A unique method is introduced to estimate how much IMF magnetic flux passes through the magnetosphere via MR on either the low-latitude or the high-latitude magnetopause. This flux mainly varies with three independent parameters: the IMF clock angle θCL, the magnetosheath plasma β, and the solar wind sound Mach number MS. Surprisingly, the magnetic fluxes passing through the magnetosphere are comparable under the southward and northward IMF conditions. (3) The dipole tilt angle, the property from the inside of the magnetosphere, also controls the magnetosheath parameters. As the Earth’s dipole tilt angle varies, the plasma pressure ridge shifts its location but remains near the magnetic equator. The stagnation point of the magnetosheath flow on the magnetopause, however, remains at the subsolar point no matter how large the dipole tilt angle is. These behaviors may be determinative of the locations of MR and the generation of flux transfer events on the magnetopause.

Abstract:ABSTRACT Magnetosheath jets represent localized enhancements in dynamic pressure observed within the magnetosheath. These energetic entities, carrying excess energy and momentum, can impact the magnetopause and disrupt the magnetosphere. Therefore, they play a vital role in coupling the solar wind and terrestrial magnetosphere. However, our understanding of the morphology and formation of these complex, transient events remains incomplete over two decades after their initial observation. Previous studies have relied on oversimplified assumptions, considering jets as elongated cylinders with dimensions ranging from $0.1\, R_{\rm E}$ to $5\, R_{\rm E}$ (Earth radii). In this study, we present simulation results obtained from Amitis, a high-performance hybrid-kinetic plasma framework (particle ions and fluid electrons) running in parallel on graphics processing units (GPUs) for fast and more environmentally friendly computation compared to CPU-based models. Considering realistic scales, we present the first global, three-dimensional (3D in both configuration and velocity spaces) hybrid-kinetic simulation results of the interaction between solar wind plasma and the Earth. Our high-resolution kinetic simulations reveal the 3D structure of magnetosheath jets, showing that jets are far from being simple cylinders. Instead, they exhibit intricate and highly interconnected structures with dynamic 3D characteristics. As they move through the magnetosheath, they wrinkle, fold, merge, and split in complex ways before a subset reaches the magnetopause.

Acceleration of Plasma Flows in the Solar Atmosphere Due to Magnetofluid Coupling - Simulation and Analysis

Abstract:Within the framework of a two-fluid description possible pathways for the generation of fast flows (dynamical as well as steady) in the lower solar atmosphere is established. It is shown that a primary plasma flow (locally sub-Alfvénic) is accelerated when interacting with emerging/ambient arcade--like closed field structures. The acceleration implies a conversion of thermal and field energies to kinetic energy of the flow. The time-scale for creating reasonably fast flows ($\gtrsim 100$ km/s) is dictated by the initial ion skin depth while the amplification of the flow depends on local $\beta $. It is shown, for the first time, that distances over which the flows become "fast" are $\sim 0.01 R_s$ from the interaction surface; later the fast flow localizes (with dimensions $\lesssim 0.05 R_S$) in the upper central region of the original arcade. For fixed initial temperature the final speed ($\gtrsim 500 km/s$) of the accelerated flow, and the modification of the field structure are independent of the time-duration (life-time) of the initial flow. In the presence of dissipation, these flows are likely to play a fundamental role in the heating of the finely structured Solar atmosphere.

Abstract:Abstract. Our capability to model the near-space physical phenomena has gradually reached a level enabling module-based first-principles modeling of geomagnetically induced electromagnetic fields and currents from upstream solar wind to the surface of the Earth. As geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) pose a real threat to the normal operation of long conductor systems on the ground, such as high-voltage power transmission systems, it is quite obvious that success in accurate predictive modeling of the phenomenon would open entirely new windows for operational space weather products. Here we introduce a process for obtaining geomagnetically induced electromagnetic fields and currents from the output of global magnetospheric MHD codes. We also present metrics that take into account both the complex nature of the signal and possible forecasting applications of the modeling process. The modeling process and the metrics are presented with the help of an actual example space weather event of 24–29 October 2003. Analysis of the event demonstrates that, despite some significant shortcomings, some central features of the overall ionospheric current fluctuations associated with GIC can be captured by the modeling process. More specifically, the basic spatiotemporal morphology of the modeled and "measured" GIC is quite similar. Furthermore, the presented user-relevant utility metrics demonstrate that MHD-based modeling can outperform simple GIC persistence models.

Deformations at Earth's dayside magnetopause during quasi-radial IMF conditions: Global kinetic simulations and soft X-ray imaging

Abstract:The Solar wind Magnetosphere Ionosphere Link Explorer (SMILE) is an ESA-CAS joint mission. Primary goals are investigating the dynamic response of the Earth's magnetosphere to the solar wind (SW) impact via simultaneous in situ magnetosheath (MS) plasma and magnetic field measurements, X-Ray images of the magnetosheath and magnetic cusps, and UV images of global auroral distributions. Magnetopause (MP) deformations associated with MS high speed jets (HSJs) under a quasi-parallel interplanetary magnetic field condition are studied using a three-dimensional (3-D) global hybrid simulation. Soft X-ray intensity calculated based on both physical quantities of solar wind proton and oxygen ions is compared. We obtain key findings concerning deformations at the MP: (1) MP deformations are highly coherent with the MS HSJs generated at the quasiparallel region of the bow shock, (2) X-ray intensities estimated using solar wind H+ and self-consistent O7+ ions are consistent with each other, (3) Visual spacecraft are employed to check the discrimination ability for capturing MP deformations on Lunar and polar orbits, respectively. The SMILE spacecraft on the polar orbit could be expected to provide opportunities for capturing the global geometry of the magnetopause in the equatorial plane. A striking point is that SMILE has the potential to capture small-scale MP deformations and MS transients, such as HSJs, at medium altitudes on its orbit.

Global Survey and Empirical Model of Fast Magnetosonic Waves over Their Full Frequency Range in Earth's Inner Magnetosphere

Abstract:We investigate the global distribution and provide empirical models of fast magnetosonic waves using the combined observations by the magnetometer and waveform receiver on board Van Allen Probes. The magnetometer measurements of magnetosonic waves indicate a significant wave power within the frequency range from the helium gyrofrequency to 20 Hz at L >= 4 in the afternoon sector, both inside and outside the plasmapause. The waveform receiver measurements indicate a significant wave power from 20 Hz to the lower hybrid resonance frequency at L <= 5.5 near the dayside outside the plasmapause or in the afternoon sector inside the plasmapause. The sum of the wave powers from the two instruments provides the wave power distribution over the complete frequency range. The most significant root-mean-square wave amplitude of magnetosonic waves is typically 100-200 pT inside or outside the plasmapause with a magnetic local time coverage of 30-50% during geomagnetically active times when AE* > 500 nT. The magnetosonic wave frequency increases with decreasing L shell following the trend of the proton gyrofrequency outside the plasmapause, indicating a close relation with the local wave generation. Inside the plasmapause, the dependence of wave frequency on L shell is weaker, and the wave frequency is more stable across L shells, indicating the wave propagation effects from the source located at higher L shells. We have performed polynomial fits of the global magnetosonic wave distribution and wave frequency spectra, which are useful in future radiation belt simulations.

Abstract:Three-dimensional global magnetohydrodynamic simulations of the solar wind-magnetosphere-ionosphere system are carried out to explore the dependence of the magnetospheric reconnection voltage, the ionospheric transpolar potential, and the field aligned currents (FACs) on the solar wind driver and ionosphere load for the cases with pure southward interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). It is shown that the reconnection voltage and the transpolar potential increase monotonically with decreasing Pedersen conductance (Sigma(P)), increasing southward IMF strength (B-s) and solar wind speed (upsilon(sw)). Moreover, both regions 1 and 2 FACs increase when B-s and upsilon(sw) increase, whereas the two currents behave differently in response to Sigma(P). As Sigma(P) increases, the region 1 FAC increases monotonically, but region 2 FAC shows a non-monotonic response to the increase of Sigma(P): it first increases in the range of (0,5) Siemens and then decreases for Sigma(P) > 5 Siemens.
