The Magnetic Field Structure of Mercury's Magnetotail

Abstract:In this study, we use the magnetic field data measured by MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging from 2011 to 2015 to investigate the average magnetic field morphology of Mercury's magnetotail in the down tail 0–3 RM (RM = 2,440 km, Mercury's radius). It is found that Mercury has a terrestrial‐like magnetotail; the magnetic field structure beyond 1.5 RM down tail is stretched significantly with typical lobe field 50 nT. A cross‐tail current sheet separating the antiparallel field lines of lobes is present in the equatorial plane. The magnetotail width in north‐south direction is about 5 RM, while the transverse width is about 4 RM. Thus, the magnetotail shows elongation along the north‐south direction. At the cross‐tail current sheet center, the normal component of magnetic field (10–20 nT) is much larger than the cross‐tail component. The lobe‐field‐aligned component of magnetic field over current sheet can be well fitted by Harris sheet model. The curvature radius of field lines at sheet center usually reaches a minimum around midnight (100–200 km) with stronger current density (40–50 nA/m2), while the curvature radius increases toward both flanks (400–600 km) with the decreased current density (about 20 nA/m2). The half‐thickness of current sheet around midnight is about 0.25 RM or 600 km, and the inner edge of current sheet is located at the down tail about 1.5 RM. Our results about the field structure in the near Mercury's tail show an evident dawn‐dusk asymmetry as that found in the Earth's magnetotail, but reasons should be different. Possible reasons are discussed.

Abstract:The Mercury magnetospheric orbiter (MMO) of the Japanese-European BepiColombo mission carries a dual-sensor magnetometer, MMO/MGF. The sensors are of the classical fluxgate type mounted on a boom. For redundancy, each sensor carries its own electronics and is connected to a different data processing unit. MMO/MGF can sample the magnetic field at a rate of up to 128 Hz. The resulting comparatively high time resolution of the magnetic field measurements, i.e., down to 8 ms, will be necessary when studying the dynamics of and processes within the Hermean magnetosphere, since the Mariner 10 observations have shown that their typical time scales are much shorter than in the Earth's magnetosphere, by about a factor of 30. The high time resolution will also be very useful for studying the evolution of the still young solar wind plasma as well as interplanetary shocks at 0.3-0.46AU. Of course, MMO/MGF is also well-prepared to assist the sister magnetometer aboard the Mercury planetary orbiter, MPOIMAG, in measuring Mercury's intrinsic magnetic field, in particular by helping to distinguish between temporal fluctuations and spatial variations. A Statistical Study of the Force Balance and Structure in the Flux Ropes in Mercury's Magnetotail

Abstract:This study presents a statistical investigation of the force balance and structures in the flux ropes in Mercury's magnetotail plasma sheet by using the measurements of MErcury Surface, Space ENviroment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER). One hundred sixty-eight flux ropes were identified from the 14 hot seasons of MESSENGER from 11 March 2011 to 30 April 2015, and 143 of them show clear magnetic field enhancements with the core field being >= 20% higher than the background magnetic field. The investigation on the force balance of these 143 flux ropes shows that magnetic pressure gradient force cannot be solely balanced by magnetic tension force, implying that thermal plasma pressure gradient force cannot be neglected in the flux ropes. We employ a non-force-free model considering the contribution of thermal pressure to resolve the physical properties of flux ropes in Mercury's magnetotail. Twenty-eight flux ropes are obtained through the fitting to the non-force-free model. The flux ropes are found to be consistent with the flattened structures, in which the mean semimajor is similar to 851 km and semiminor is similar to 333 km, both are several times the local proton inertial length. The average core field is estimated to be similar to 57.5 nT, and flux content is similar to 0.019 MWb, much larger than the previous results obtained from force-free flux rope model. The importance of thermal pressure gradient in the force balance of the flux ropes and the flattened structure indicates that the flux ropes in Mercury's magnetotail plasma sheet are mostly in early stage of the evolution, and still contain enough plasma to affect their magnetic structures.
A Novel Ten-Moment Multifluid Model for Mercury: from the Planetary Conducting Core to the Dynamic Magnetosphere

Abstract:For the first time, we explore the tightly coupled interior-magnetosphere system of Mercury by employing a three-dimensional ten-moment multifluid model. This novel fluid model incorporates the non-ideal effects including the Hall effect, inertia, and tensorial pressures that are critical for collisionless magnetic reconnection; therefore, it is particularly well suited for investigating $collisionless$ magnetic reconnection in Mercury's magnetotail and at the planet's magnetopause. The model is able to reproduce the observed magnetic field vectors, field-aligned currents, and cross-tail current sheet asymmetry (beyond the MHD approach) and the simulation results are in good agreement with spacecraft observations. We also study the magnetospheric response of Mercury to a hypothetical extreme event with an enhanced solar wind dynamic pressure, which demonstrates the significance of induction effects resulting from the electromagnetically-coupled interior. More interestingly, plasmoids (or flux ropes) are formed in Mercury's magnetotail during the event, indicating the highly dynamic nature of Mercury's magnetosphere.

Abstract:We present evidence of geomagnetic storms in Mercury’s magnetosphere based on MESSENGER magnetic field observations made just before the probe impacted the planet.Our findings answer the question of whether geomagnetic storms can occur in other planetary magnetospheres.The interaction of the solar wind with Mercury’s magnetosphere is known to involve flux transfer events in the dayside magnetosphere,plasmoids and flux ropes in the magnetotail,and substorm-like processes,all of which occur morphologically similar to Earth but with significant differences.The significantly weaker magnetic field,smaller magnetosphere,and much faster timescale of processes around Mercury,when compared with Earth,enable charged particles to escape its magnetosphere more efficiently through magnetopause shadowing and direct bombard of the surface.Our analysis of MESSENGER’s data during a coronal mass ejection(CME) proves that,despite these substantial differences,a bifurcated ring current can form in Mercury’s magnetosphere that initiates magnetic storms under strong solar wind driving.

Abstract:This review summarizes the research of Mercury's magnetosphere in the Post-MESSENGER era and compares its dynamics to those in other planetary magnetospheres, especially to those in Earth's magnetosphere. This review starts by introducing the planet Mercury, including its interplanetary environment, magnetosphere, exosphere, and conducting core. The frequent and intense magnetic reconnection on the dayside magnetopause, which is represented by the flux transfer event "shower", is reviewed on how they depend on magnetosheath plasma beta and magnetic shear angle across the magnetopause, following by how they contribute to the flux circulation and magnetosphere-surface-exosphere coupling. In the next, the progress of Mercury's magnetosphere under extreme solar events, including the core induction and the reconnection erosion on the dayside magnetosphere, the responses of the nightside magnetosphere, are reviewed. Then, the dawn-dusk properties of the plasma sheet, including the features of the ions, the structure of the current sheet, and the dynamics of magnetic reconnection, are summarized. The last topic reviews the particle energization in Mercury's magnetosphere, which includes the energization of the Kelvin-Helmholtz waves on the magnetopause boundaries, reconnection-generated magnetic structures, and the cross-tail electric field. In each chapter, the last section discusses the open questions related with each topic, which can be considered by the simulations and the future spacecraft mission. We close by summarizing the future BepiColombo opportunities, which is a joint mission between ESA and JAXA, and is en route to Mercury.

MESSENGER Observations of Magnetospheric Substorm Activity in Mercury's Near Magnetotail

Abstract:MErcury Surface, Space ENviroment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) magnetic field and plasma measurements taken during crossings of Mercury's magnetotail from 2011 to 2014 have been examined for evidence of substorms. A total of 26 events were found during which an Earth-like growth phase was followed by clear near-tail expansion phase signatures. During the growth phase, just as at Earth, the thinning of the plasma sheet and the increase of the magnetic field intensity in the lobe are observed, but the fractional increase in field intensity could be approximate to 3 to 5 times that at Earth. The average timescale of the growth phase is approximate to 1min. The dipolarization that marks the initiation of the substorm expansion phase is only a few seconds in duration. During the expansion phase, lasting approximate to 1min, the plasma sheet is observed to thicken and engulf the spacecraft. The duration of the substorm observed in this paper is consistent with previous observations of Mercury's Dungey cycle. The reconfiguration of the magnetotail during Mercury's substorm is very similar to that at Earth despite its very compressed timescale.

Abstract:We use a paraboloid model of Mercury's magnetosphere and magnetometer data from the MESSEN-GER spacecraft obtained in April 2011 to determine the optimal parameters of Mercury's magnetospheric current systems, in the sense that they yield the smallest discrepancy (less than 10 nT) between model predictions and measurements. The obtained model data are compared with experimental data and the KT17 model of Mercury's magnetospheric magnetic field.

Abstract:AbstractThe flapping motion of Mercury's magnetotail current sheet is investigated based on the observations of MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER). The typical flapping period in Mercury's magnetotail is much shorter (~13 s), comparing with ~10–20 min at Earth's magnetotail. The magnetic field oscillation amplitude induced by flapping motion is larger near both flanks than that around tail center. Similar to Earth's magnetotail, there are two flapping types existent in Mercury's magnetotail, one is the kink‐like flapping that can propagate as traveling waves, and the other one is the steady flapping that does not propagate. Both flapping types distribute widely in magnetotail. The kink‐like flapping waves propagating either dawnward or duskward can be observed across the entire magnetotail current sheet, which suggests that the energy sources for triggering the kink‐like flapping waves should locate around both tail flanks instead of tail center as is for the Earth's magnetotail.

In this study, we investigate the DDM events at Mercury under extreme solar wind conditions using a three‐dimensional (3‐D) global hybrid simulation model. Our results show that when the solar wind dynamic pressure is 107 nPa and the magnitude of the purely southward IMF is 50 nT, most of the dayside magnetosphere disappears within 10 s after the interaction between the solar wind and the planetary magnetic field starts. During the DDM event, the ion flux is significantly enhanced at most of the planetary dayside surface and reaches its maximum value of about 1010 cm−2 s−1 at the low‐latitude surface, which is much larger than that under normal solar wind conditions. During the DDM events, the dayside bow shock mostly disappears for about 9 s and then reappears. Moreover, the time evolution of magnetopause standoff distance under different solar wind conditions is also studied. When the solar wind dynamic pressure exceeds 25 nPa and the IMF is purely southward, a part of the dayside magnetosphere disappears. Under the same IMF, the higher the solar wind dynamic pressure, the faster the magnetopause standoff distance reaches the planetary surface. When the solar wind conditions are normal (with a dynamic pressure of 8 nPa) or the IMF is purely northward, the dayside magnetosphere does not disappear. The results provide a clear physical image of DDM events from a 3‐D perspective.

The planetary magnetic interacts with the solar wind originating from the Sun, creating a magnetosphere. However, it has been observed that the dayside part of the planetary magnetosphere can disappear, which is referred to as dayside disappearing magnetosphere (DDM) events. These events normally occur when the solar wind dynamic pressure is extremely high and the magnetic field in the solar wind is both intense and southward. In this study, we use computer simulations to investigate the DDM events at Mercury under extreme solar wind conditions. Our results show that most of the dayside magnetosphere disappears after the interaction between the extreme solar wind and the planetary magnetic field, leading to a significant enhancement in the precipitation of ion flux on the planetary surface. Moreover, the temporal evolution of the dayside magnetosphere's size under different solar wind conditions was also studied. Under the same solar wind magnetic field, the higher the solar wind dynamic pressure, the smaller the magnetosphere. The results provide a clear physical image of DDM events from a 3-D perspective. Abstract:Thermal (<1 eV) electron density measurements, derived from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution's (MAVEN) Langmuir Probe and Waves (LPW) instrument, are analyzed to produce the first statistical study of the thermal electron population in the Martian magnetotail. Coincident measurements of the local magnetic field are used to demonstrate that close to Mars, the thermal electron population is most likely to be observed at a cylindrical distance of ~1.1 Mars radii (RM) from the central tail region during times when the magnetic field flares inward toward the central tail, compared to ~1.3 RM during times when the magnetic field flares outward away from the central tail. Similar patterns are observed further down the magnetotail with greater variability. Thermal electron densities are highly variable throughout the magnetotail; average densities are typically ~20-50 /cc within the optical shadow of Mars and can peak at ~100 /cc just outside of the optical shadow. Standard deviations of 100% are observed for average densities measured throughout the tail. Analysis of the local magnetic field topology suggests that thermal electrons observed within the optical shadow of Mars are likely sourced from the nightside ionosphere, whereas electrons observed just outside of the optical shadow are likely sourced from the dayside ionosphere. Finally, thermal electrons within the optical shadow of Mars are up to 20% more likely to be observed when the strongest crustal magnetic fields point sunward than when they point tailward.
Slow-mode rarefaction and compression fronts in the Hermean magnetosphere: From MESSENGER insights to future BepiColombo observations

Abstract:Context. Standing slow-mode rarefaction and compression front structures may appear in the Mercury magnetosheath under particular solar wind conditions. Aims. The aim of the study is to identify the wind conditions required for the formation of slow-mode structures (SMS) in the Mercury magnetosphere by comparing MESSENGER magnetometer data and magnetohydrodynamics simulations. Methods. We used the magnetohydrodynamics code PLUTO in spherical coordinates to reproduce the interaction of the solar wind with the Mercury magnetosphere. First, the optimal wind conditions for the SMS formation were identified with respect to the orientation of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) and dynamic pressure. Next, the magnetic field calculated in the simulations along the MESSENGER trajectory was compared to MESSENGER magnetometer data to identify tracers of the satellite encounter with the SMS. Results. Optimal wind conditions for the formation of SMS require that the IMF is oriented in the northward or radial directions. The MESSENGER orbit on 8th September 2011 takes place during wind conditions that are close to the optimal configuration for SMS formation near the north pole, leading to the possible intersection of the satellite trajectory with the SMS. MESSENGER magnetometer data show a rather strong decrease in the magnetic field module after the satellite crossed nearby the compression front that is observed in the simulation, providing indirect evidence of the SMS.

Three-dimensional Global Hybrid Simulations of Flux Transfer Event Showers at Mercury

Abstract:One of the important MESSENGER observations is the formation of flux transfer event (FTE) showers, where tens of FTEs are observed in a short time interval of about 1-2 minutes, at Mercury's magnetopause. In this paper, we investigate the interactions between the solar wind and Mercury's magnetosphere using three-dimensional global hybrid simulations. When the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) is purely southward, we can observe FTE showers at the low-latitude dayside magnetopause, and these FTEs can propagate northward or southward with a speed of about 90 km s(-1). When the IMF is purely northward, FTE showers can be produced in both the northward and southward hemispheres of the high-latitude nightside magnetopause, and these FTEs propagate toward the magnetotail with a speed of about 250 km s(-1). The typical FTEs have a duration of 1-2 s, and reoccur in 5-6 s. Our simulations provide a good explanation for FTE showers observed by MESSENGER.
Spatial Distribution of Mercury'S Flux Ropes and Reconnection Fronts: Messenger Observations

Abstract:We perform a statistical study of flux ropes and reconnection fronts based on MErcury Surface, Space ENviroment, GEochemistry, and Ranging (MESSENGER) magnetic field and plasma observations to study the implications for the spatial distribution of reconnection sites in Mercury's near magnetotail. The results show important differences of temporal and spatial distributions as compared to Earth. We have surveyed the plasma sheet crossings between -2 R-M and -3 R-M downtail from the planet, i.e., the location of Near-Mercury Neutral Line (NMNL). Plasma sheets were defined to be regions with beta >= 0.5. Using this definition, 39 flux ropes and 86 reconnection fronts were identified in the plasma sheet. At Mercury, the distributions of flux ropes and reconnection fronts show clear dawn-dusk asymmetry with much higher occurrence rate on the dawnside plasma sheet than on the duskside. This suggests that magnetic reconnection in Mercury's magnetotail occurs more frequently in the dawnside than in the duskside plasma sheet, which is different than the observations in Earth's magnetotail showing more reconnection signatures in the duskside plasma sheet. The distribution of plasma sheet thickness shows that plasma sheet near the midnight is the thinnest part and does not show obvious asymmetry. Thus, the reasons that cause magnetic reconnection to preferentially occur on the dawnside of the magnetotail at Mercury may not be the plasma sheet thickness and require further study. The peak occurrence rates of flux ropes and reconnection fronts in Mercury's plasma sheet are similar to 60 times higher than that of Earth's values, which we interpret to be due to the highly variable magnetospheric conditions at Mercury. Such higher occurrence rate of magnetic reconnection would generate more plasma flows in the dawnside plasma sheet than in the duskside. These plasma flows would mostly brake and initiate the substorm dipolarization on the postmidnight sector at Mercury rather than the premidnight susbtorm onset location at Earth.

Abstract:Using data from the MESSENGER spacecraft magnetometer that describes the magnetopause and the bow shock crossing points of the Mercury’s magnetosphere, we have calculated the parameters of the paraboloids of revolution approximating the obtained points. For each spacecraft orbit, the subsolar magnetopause and bow shock standoff distances were obtained, based on the paraboloid parameters for each crossing point. The dependences of the magnetopause and bow shock subsolar standoff distances on the Mercury’s position relative to the Sun have been obtained. These profiles agree with decreases of the solar wind plasma dynamic pressure and the interplanetary magnetic field strength with heliocentric distance. The variations of the interplanetary and magnetosheath magnetic field were investigated. The average subsolar magnetosheath thickness and the value of the magnetic field jump at the bow shock during the transition from the upstream interplanetary magnetic field region to the magnetosheath were obtained.

Abstract:We study interplanetary coronal mass ejections (ICMEs) measured by probes at different heliocentric distances (0.3-1AU) to investigate the propagation of ICMEs in the inner heliosphere and determine how the generic features of ICMEs change with heliospheric distance. Using data from the MESSENGER, Venus Express and ACE spacecraft, we analyze with the superposed epoch technique the profiles of ICME substructures, namely the sheath and the magnetic ejecta. We determine that the median magnetic field magnitude in the sheath correlates well with ICME speeds at 1 AU and we use this proxy to order the ICMEs at all spacecraft. We then investigate the typical ICME profiles for three categories equivalent to slow, intermediate and fast ICMEs. Contrary to fast ICMEs, slow ICMEs have a weaker solar wind field at the front and a more symmetric magnetic field profile. We find the asymmetry to be less pronounced at Earth than at Mercury, indicating a relaxation taking place as ICMEs propagate. We also find that the magnetic field intensities in the wake region of the ICMEs do not go back to the pre-ICME solar wind intensities, suggesting that the effects of ICMEs on the ambient solar wind last longer than the duration of the transient event. Such results provide an indication of physical processes that need to be reproduced by numerical simulations of ICME propagation. The samples studied here will be greatly improved by future missions dedicated to the exploration of the inner heliosphere, such as Parker Solar Probe and Solar Orbiter.
