Abstract:Thermal (<1 eV) electron density measurements, derived from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution's (MAVEN) Langmuir Probe and Waves (LPW) instrument, are analyzed to produce the first statistical study of the thermal electron population in the Martian magnetotail. Coincident measurements of the local magnetic field are used to demonstrate that close to Mars, the thermal electron population is most likely to be observed at a cylindrical distance of ~1.1 Mars radii (RM) from the central tail region during times when the magnetic field flares inward toward the central tail, compared to ~1.3 RM during times when the magnetic field flares outward away from the central tail. Similar patterns are observed further down the magnetotail with greater variability. Thermal electron densities are highly variable throughout the magnetotail; average densities are typically ~20-50 /cc within the optical shadow of Mars and can peak at ~100 /cc just outside of the optical shadow. Standard deviations of 100% are observed for average densities measured throughout the tail. Analysis of the local magnetic field topology suggests that thermal electrons observed within the optical shadow of Mars are likely sourced from the nightside ionosphere, whereas electrons observed just outside of the optical shadow are likely sourced from the dayside ionosphere. Finally, thermal electrons within the optical shadow of Mars are up to 20% more likely to be observed when the strongest crustal magnetic fields point sunward than when they point tailward.

Abstract:In addition to earlier found variations of the Martian magnetotail thickness as a function of the solar wind ram pressure, succeeding analysis of the magnetotail boundary crossings by Phobos 2 orbiter revealed modulation of magnetopause positions by planetary crustal magnetization. It was shown that magnetic anomalies mostly influence the magnetotail thickness when they are approaching the terminator region due to planetary rotation. The areographic position of the equatorial regions of Mars, which efficiently increase planetary magnetotail thickness, corresponds to strongly magnetized regions recently mapped by the Mars Global Surveyor. Local enhancement of the magnetotail thickness due to non-uniform crustal magnetization can be as high as 500–1000 km.

Abstract:It has been long observed at Mars that electron fluxes are enhanced during the tail current sheet crossings, of which the cause is not well understood. We use a novel approach to reveal one of the electron energization mechanisms with observations from the Mars Atmospheric and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission. We find the field-aligned potential, derived from comparing electron distribution functions, to be approximately linearly correlated with the logarithmic values of the local total ion density. This is the expected behavior of an ambipolar electrostatic potential. The large amplitude of potential (tens to hundreds of V) is a result of both a significant density gradient (1 order of magnitude) and the high electron temperature (tens of eV) in the tail. Such a mechanism is not limited to ion density enhancements at current sheet crossings but can be present anywhere that large ion density gradients and hot electrons are present.

Abstract:We report on the local structure of the Martian subsolar Magnetic Pileup Boundary (MPB) from minimum variance analysis of the magnetic field measured by the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) spacecraft for six orbits. In particular, we detect a well defined current layer within the MPB and provide a local estimate of its current density which results in a sunward Hall electric force. This force accounts for the deflection of the solar wind ions and the acceleration of electrons which carry the interplanetary magnetic field through the MPB into the Magnetic Pileup Region. We find that the thickness of the MPB current layer is of the order of both the upstream (magnetosheath) solar wind proton inertial length and convective gyroradius. This study provides a high resolution view of one of the components of the current system around Mars reported in recent works.

Magnetic Field Draping in Induced Magnetospheres: Evidence from the MAVEN Mission to Mars

Abstract:The Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission has been orbiting Mars since 2014 and now has over 10,000 orbits which we use to characterize Mars' dynamic space environment. Through global field line tracing with MAVEN magnetic field data we find an altitude dependent draping morphology that differs from expectations of induced magnetospheres in the vertical ($\hat Z$ Mars Sun-state, MSO) direction. We quantify this difference from the classical picture of induced magnetospheres with a Bayesian multiple linear regression model to predict the draped field as a function of the upstream interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), remanent crustal fields, and a previously underestimated induced effect. From our model we conclude that unexpected twists in high altitude dayside draping ($>$800 km) are a result of the IMF component in the $\pm \hat X$ MSO direction. We propose that this is a natural outcome of current theories of induced magnetospheres but has been underestimated due to approximations of the IMF as solely $\pm \hat Y$ directed. We additionally estimate that distortions in low altitude ($<$800 km) dayside draping along $\hat Z$ are directly related to remanent crustal fields. We show dayside draping traces down tail and previously reported inner magnetotail twists are likely caused by the crustal field of Mars, while the outer tail morphology is governed by an induced response to the IMF direction. We conclude with an updated understanding of induced magnetospheres which details dayside draping for multiple directions of the incoming IMF and discuss the repercussions of this draping for magnetotail morphology.

Abstract:Three-dimensional global hybrid simulations are performed to explore how the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF), the Martian crustal fields, and planetary pickup ions affect the twisting of the Martian magnetotail. The results agree with previous studies that the crustal magnetic fields cause the Martian magnetotail to twist counterclockwise or clockwise depending on the sign of the IMF Y-component in the Mars solar orbital coordinates. However, the twist is more pronounced when the crustal fields are on the nightside, contradicting the early explanation that the crustal fields affect the twist through dayside magnetic reconnection between the crustal fields and the draped IMF. Additionally, planetary pickup ions also contribute to the twist because their mass loading slows down the plasma flow and leads to the bending of the magnetic field lines in the magnetotail. It is demonstrated that the twist inside Mars' shadow in the near magnetotail region (at X = −1.5 R M , where R M is Mars' radius) is mainly attributable to the crustal fields, while the influence of planetary pickup ions starts to dominate outside Mars' shadow and in regions further away from Mars.

Abstract:Abstract Mars lacks a planetary-scale intrinsic magnetosphere, and instead possesses small-scale crustal magnetic fields, creating a distinct class of plasma environments from intrinsic magnetospheres such as that of Earth or Saturn. Here we report the discovery of intrinsic magnetospheric ion behavior at Mars based on the measurements provided by Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN mission (MAVEN). We observed wedge-like dispersion structures of H + exhibiting butterfly-shaped distributions within the Martian crustal fields, a feature previously observed only in intrinsic magnetospheres. These dispersed structures are a result of drift motions that fundamentally resemble those observed in intrinsic magnetospheres. Our findings indicate that the Martian crustal fields have the potential to behave similarly to intrinsic magnetospheres in modifying the ion motions despite their weak strength and large inhomogeneity. This study offers insights into the role of crustal fields in ion escape and the mass-energy transfer between solar wind and Mars.

Abstract:When the solar wind interacts with the ionosphere of an unmagnetized planet, it induces currents that form an induced magnetosphere. These currents and their associated magnetic fields play a pivotal role in controlling the movement of charged particles, which is essential for understanding the escape of planetary ions. Unlike the well-documented magnetospheric current systems, the ionospheric current systems on unmagnetized planets remain less understood, which constrains the quantification of electrodynamic energy transfer from stars to these planets. Here, utilizing eight years of data from the Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) mission, we investigate the global distribution of ionospheric currents on Mars. We have identified two distinct current systems in the ionosphere: one aligns with the solar wind electric field yet exhibits hemispheric asymmetry perpendicular to the electric field direction; the other corresponds to the flow pattern of annually-averaged neutral winds. We propose that these two current systems are driven by the solar wind and atmospheric neutral winds, respectively. Our findings reveal that Martian ionospheric dynamics are influenced by the neutral winds from below and the solar wind from above, highlighting the complex and intriguing nature of current systems on unmagnetized planets.

Abstract:Magnetosonic waves are an important medium for energy transfer in collisionless space plasma. Magnetosonic waves have been widely investigated in the upstream of the bow shock at Mars. These waves are believed to originate from pickup ions or reflected particles. By utilizing MAVEN spacecraft data, we have observed the occurrence of quasi-perpendicularly propagating magnetosonic emissions near the proton gyrofrequency in the Martian magnetotail region. These plasma waves are associated with a significant enhancement of proton and oxygen flux. The excited magnetosonic waves could possibly heat the protons through resonance and facilitate the ionospheric plasma escape. Our results could be helpful to better understand the Mars' magnetospheric dynamics and offer insights into possible energy redistribution between waves and plasma in the Martian nightside magnetosphere.
The Structure of Martian Magnetosphere at the Dayside Terminator Region as Observed on MAVEN Spacecraft

Abstract:We analyzed 44 passes of the MAVEN spacecraft through the magnetosphere, arranged by the angle between electric field vector and the projection of spacecraft position radius vector in the YZ plane in MSE coordinate system (${\theta}$ E ). All passes were divided into 3 angular sectors near 0°, 90° and 180° ${\theta}$ E angles in order to estimate the role of IMF direction in plasma and magnetic properties of dayside Martian magnetosphere. The time interval chosen was from January 17 through February 4, 2016 when MAVEN was crossing the dayside magnetosphere at SZA ~ 70°. Magnetosphere as the region with prevailing energetic planetary ions is always found between the magnetosheath and the ionosphere. 3 angular sectors of dayside interaction region in MSE coordinate system with different orientation of the solar wind electric field vector E = -1/c V x B showed that for each sector one can find specific profiles of the magnetosheath, the magnetic barrier and the magnetosphere. Plume ions originate in the northern MSE sector where motion electric field is directed from the planet. This electric field ejects magnetospheric ions leading to dilution of magnetospheric heavy ions population, and this effect is seen in some magnetospheric profiles. Magnetic barrier forms in front of the magnetosphere, and relative magnetic field magnitudes in these two domains vary. The average height of the boundary with ionosphere is ~530 km and the average height of the magnetopause is ~730 km. We discuss the implications of the observed magnetosphere structure to the planetary ions loss mechanism.

Abstract:The induced magnetotails on Mars and Venus are considered to arise through the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF) draping around the planet and the solar wind deceleration due to the mass loading effect. They have very similar structures as that on Earth, two magnetic lobes of opposite radial magnetic fields and a plasma sheet in between. However, the orientation and geometry of the induced magnetotails are controlled by the IMF, not the planetary intrinsic magnetic field. In this study, we present another characteristic of the induced magnetotails on Mars and Venus with the observations of MAVEN and Venus Express. It is found that the magnetic flux in the induced magnetotails on Mars and Venus are inhomogeneous. There is more magnetic flux in the +E hemisphere than -E hemisphere. The magnetic flux is observed to transport gradually from the +E hemisphere to the -E hemisphere along the magnetotail. The magnetotail magnetic flux transport seems to be faster on Mars than that at Venus. Based on these observations, we suggest that the finite gyro-radius effect of the planetary ions that are picked up by the solar wind is responsible to the magnetic flux inhomogeneity and transport in the induced magnetotails. The role of the magnetic pressure gradient in the magnetotail will be discussed.

Abstract:The magnetic field observations by the Mars Global Surveyor (MGS) performed on the premapping orbits in the years 1997 and 1998 in the low-altitude ionosphere of Mars show the existence of a strong "external" magnetization not related to the "internal" crustal magnetization. A significant increase of the magnetic field strength is observed in the collisional northern ionosphere at altitudes of similar to 200 km and at 60 degrees-90 degrees solar zenith angles sampled by MGS. The magnetization features and the magnetic field topology vary significantly with the sector structure of the interplanetary magnetic field (IMF). For B-yIMF > 0 the magnetic flux tubes transported to altitudes of similar to 200 km are suddenly straightened releasing their tangential stresses. For B-yIMF < 0 a rotation of the magnetic field vector by almost 180. occurs. Such an asymmetry in the ionospheric response on Mars is similar to the asymmetry observed on Venus at the periods of low-solar activity indicating its universal origin for magnetized ionospheres. It is suggested that the electric currents generated in the collisional ionosphere where the ions become demagnetized, while the electrons remain magnetized produce the observed features.
The Relationship Between the Magnetic-Field in the Martian Magnetotail and Upstream Solar-Wind Parameters

Abstract:Magnetic field data measured by the MAGMA instrument in the Martian magnetotail lobes are compared with the ram pressure of the upstream solar wind observed by the TAUS instrument in the circular orbits of the Phobos 2 spacecraft. High correlation was found between the magnetic field intensity in the Martian magnetotail lobes and the solar wind ram pressure. From this relationship the average flaring angle of the Martian magnetotail was determined as ∼13°, and the average magnetosonic Mach number was estimated as ∼5. The observed relationship between the Martian magnetotail magnetic field intensity and the solar wind magnetic field reflects the correlation of the solar wind magnetic field to the ram pressure providing a value of ∼7 for the average Alfvenic Mach number. The flaring angle obtained for the Martian magnetotail was found to be an intermediate value between the flaring angle of the magnetotail of the Earth and that of Venus at comparable distances.
Influence of Tail-Like Magnetic Field on O + Ion Distribution in the Martian Magnetosphere

Abstract:Based on the comparison with the Earth, using the LB magnetic field model, the distribution of O + ion originating from the ionosphere in the Martian magnetosphere is theoretically studied under different conditions of the tail-like magnetic field. The results show that the tail-like magnetic field has influence on the O + ion flux in the Martian magnetotail: (i) the O + ion flux in the Martian tail will increase if the tail-like magnetic field increases; when the tail-like magnetic field increases from 5 nT to 20 nT, the O + ion flux increases 3 times in the region of 2.8 R m in the Martian tail; and (ii) the O + ion flux decreases with increasing intrinsic moment; when the intrinsic moment increases about 5 times, the flux decreases to one fourth in the region of 2.8 R m in the Martian tail. According to the data on the O + ion flux and theoretical result in this paper, the deduced Martian intrinsic moment is about 2 ×10 21 Gcm 3 . This is consistent with the most recent observation by the USA satellite MGS.

Abstract:The Martian magnetotail is largely controlled by the solar wind (SW) and is modulated by variations in the upstream drivers. However, due to the limitations of single‐spacecraft observations, the effects of SW variations on the Martian magnetotail have not been fully understood so far. Here, using Tianwen‐1 and MAVEN data, we report for the first time the rapid response of Martian magnetotail to the SW disturbance. In our study, Tianwen‐1 detected the flapping of Martian magnetotail, while MAVEN monitored disturbances in the upstream SW. The results indicate that a 20% increase (or decrease) in SW dynamic pressure and a 30° (or 50°) rotation of interplanetary magnetic field clock angle could cause the Martian magnetotail to swing rapidly. These two SW disturbances could lead to oscillations of the Martian magnetotail. This study reveals the importance of joint observations for studying the interaction between the SW and Mars.

Abstract:We have an unique opportunity to compare the magnetospheres of two non-magnetic planets as Mars and Venus with identical instrument sets Aspera-3 and Aspera-4 on board of the Mars Express and Venus Express missions. We have performed both statistical and case studies of properties of the magnetosheath ion flows and the flows of planetary ions behind both planets. We have shown that the general morphology of both magnetotails is generally identical. In both cases the energy of the light (H+) and the heavy (O+, etc.) ions decreases from the tail periphery (several keV) down to few eV in the tail center. At the same time the wake center of both planets is occupied by plasma sheet coincident with the current sheet of the tail. Both plasma sheets are filled by accelerated (500–1000eV) heavy planetary ions. We report also the discovery of a new feature never observed before in the tails of non-magnetic planets: the plasma sheet is enveloped by consecutive layers of He+ and H+ with decreasing energies.
Detection of magnetospheric ion drift patterns at Mars

Abstract:Mars lacks a global magnetic field, and instead possesses small-scale crustal magnetic fields, making its magnetic environment fundamentally different from intrinsic magnetospheres like those of Earth or Saturn. Here we report the discovery of magnetospheric ion drift patterns, typical of intrinsic magnetospheres, at Mars usingmeasurements fromMarsAtmosphere and Volatile EvolutioNmission. Specifically, we observewedge-like dispersion structures of hydrogen ions exhibiting butterfly-shaped distributions within the Martian crustal fields, a feature previously observed only in planetary-scale intrinsic magnetospheres. These dispersed structures are the results of driftmotions that fundamentally resemble those observed in intrinsic magnetospheres. Our findings indicate that the Martian magnetosphere embodies an intermediate case where both the unmagnetized and magnetized ion behaviors could be observed because of the wide range of strengths and spatial scales of the crustal magnetic fields around Mars.
