Abstract:A conception of critical solvent concentration (CSC) at the onset of phase separation was proposed. The macrovoid-formation mechanism came up with this conception. It was considered that a higher solvent concentration at the onset of phase separation than that critical value is required for the development of macrovoids in phase-inversion membranes. When the solvent concentration at the onset of phase separation is smaller than the critcal value,the macrovoids development stops and a sponge-like structure is formed. The polyvinylidene difluoride(PVDF) hollow fiber membranes by using PVDF(18%)-PEG1000(5 %)-DMAc(77%)casting solutions and different inner coagulation baths. A mass transfer model was established to simulate the composition variation of nascent hollow fiber during the PVDF hollow fiber formation process under the corresponding technical condition. The solvent concentration at the onset of phase separation was calculated. The membrane morphological structures were predicted according to the conception of CSC at the onset of phase separation, the macrovoids formation mechanism and the simulation results. SEM observations of the membranes prepared in various inner coagulation baths show that the predicted results coincide well with the membrane morphological structre and verify the macrovid-formation mechanism.
The Polymer-rich Phase Solidification Process of PVDF-PVP-DMAc-H2O Solution

Abstract:The solidification mechanism and rate of PVDF-PVP-DMAc-H2O membrane-casting solution were investigated. The differential scanning calorimeter (DSC) and the X-ray powder diffractometer (XRD) were used to analyze the properties of PVDF polymer gelation. It is found that the solidification process conversing from polymer solution to polymer gel is a physical-reversible process caused by crystallization, and the crystalline solid-liquid phase separation happens under the nucleation and growth mechanism. During the conversion process from polymer solution to polymer gel, the fluidity of the PVDF-PVP-DMAc-H2O system was detected by the falling-ball experiment. At the gelation point, the transformation process of fluid to solid takes about 2.5 to 4 minutes. The phase separation rate during the membrane formation process was measured by the light transmission method. The liquid-liquid phase separation happens at about 1 minute after the gel demixing. There is about 1.5~3 minutes left for the morphological variation between the polymer-rich and polymer-lean phase before the solidification of the polymer-rich phase, and it is the key period for the formatin, variation and finalization of the pores in the membrane.

Abstract:Sulfolane was acted as a kind of diluent to prepared PVdF porous membranes via TIPS process. Its impact on structure and morphology was studied. Phase diagram for this system was determined by different scanning calorimetry (DSC). Not any structure in the region higher than the dynamic crystallization temperature can be found and the temperature at which particle formation was observed by the optical microscope was approximately in agreement with the dynamic crystallization temperature, which revealed that only S-L phase separation happened for PVdF/sulfolane system during TIPS process. It was found that the heat of crystallization increased with the increase of polymer content. The increase of the cooling rate will increase the crystallization rate. SEM, which showed that membranes had symmetrical structure and pores formed between PVdF crystallization, revealed that PVdF will present different crystallization morphology as the cooling rate changed. With the cooling rate decrease, both the size of particles and the channel size of open pores between particles became larger, but more uneven. As the cooling rate increased, the size of particles decreased and pore became well interconnected and uniform, which were confirmed by the measurement of average pore size and pore size distribution. Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) microporous membranes were prepared via the thermally induced phase separation process using diluent mixture of dibutyl phthalate (DBP) and di(2-ehylhexyl) phthalate (DEHP). The effects of the DBP ratio to DEHP in the diluent mixture on the phase diagrams were investigated. The phase diagrams can be controlled successfully by varying the DBP ratio in the diluent mixture. The compatibility between polymer and diluent mixture was characterized to explain the features in the phase diagram. The cross-sectional structures of membranes were investigated and related to the DBP ratio in diluent mixtures, initial polymer concentration, and cooling rate. When the DBP ratio to DEHP was 30 wt/70 wt, only spherulites structure was obtained at the polymer concentration of 30 wt % and at the cooling rate of IO'C/min, whereas the cellular structure was detected as the polymer concentration increased or the cooling rate deceased. In the case of the systems with only S-L phase separation, only spherulites structures were observed and the sizes of spherulites increased with increase in the polymer concentration and with decrease in the cooling rate. Abstract:Polymerization-induced phase separation behavior of 2-acryllaniido-2-methyl-1-propanesulfonic acid (AMPS)/sodium dodecylsulfonate (SDS) aqueous solution was investigated by using a combined small angle light scattering (SALS) and laser light interference (LI) system. Compared with the conventional SALS technique that has been widely used in studying the phase separation kinetics and mechanism of multicomponent polymer blends or solution, the present combined SALS and LI system can additionally provide valuable information on polymerization kinetics prior to the onset of phase separation. It was found that the 1 mol (.) L-1 AMPS aqueous solution in the presence of 0.2 mol (.) L-1 SDS underwent apparent phase separation when polymerization conversion approached 82%. The phase separation rate is so rapid that it takes only 90 s for scattering intensity to reach the maximum. The early stage phase separation follows the spinodal decomposition (SD) mechanism that can be described by the classic linear theory sponsored by Cahn and Hilliard. At late stage of phase separation, however, an observable shift of characteristic vector q(m) to larger values take place, which may result from the secondary phase separation in the monomer-rich phase that leads to a deceased average domain size in sample solution. On the other hand, the integral scattering intensity decreased apparently at late stage of phase separation due to the decreased refractive index difference between the monomer-rich and polymer-rich phases as a result of the continued polymerization in the monomer-rich phase.[GRAPHICS]Illustration of the combined SALS and LI system.

Abstract:The action of solvent on the polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) membrane prepared by the phase separation method is discussed. The phase separation data were measured by cloud point method for the solution of w__(PVDF)=0.12 with the solvent of DMSO,DMF,DMA,NMP and TMP respectively. The advanced velocity of the phase separation front line when the casting solution was contacted with water was measured by microscope photo method. The pore size of membrane was measured by bulb point method. The results shown that DMSO, TMP and DMA are good solvents to cast PVDF membrane by phase separation method.

Abstract:A ternary phase field model is developed for water/N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone(NMP)/polysulfone system to simulate the non-solvent induced phase separation process. Our model succeeds to predict detailed asymmetric membrane structures, with dense skin layer and porous sublayer constructed from polymer network. It is found that the pore distribution and connectivity of polymer network change with the initial composition of casting solution and coagulation bath. Tortuosity and maximum pore size along the direction of thickness are calculated, with a typical trade-off relation found between them. Electrochemical separation performance was evaluated and found to have a notable correlation with structural characteristics.
Phase Separation Phenomena During the Formation of Asymmetric Membranes

Abstract:The formation of membranes from two systems has been studied. In the system polyurethane-dimethylformamide-water, the mechanism for the formation of the sponge-like structure proves to be a liquid-liquid phase separation with nucleation and growth of the diluted phase. This mechanism has been confirmed for the system modified polystyrene-polyisoprene-polystyrene/o-dichlorobenzene/(methanol-water). Crystallization and gelation is discussed. The membranes prepared showed hyperfiltration activity. The mechanism proposed here is believed to be valid for other systems, too.

Abstract:Effects of coagulation bath temperature on the membrane formation mechanism and the morphologies of the formed membranes were studied. The binodal and spinodal lines in the phase diagrams of water/DMAc/Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) were calculated based on the thermodynamics equations of membrane formation, and the gel phase boundaries of the systems at 25 degrees C and 60 degrees C were determined via cloud point measurement. The obtained ternary phase diagrams of water/DMAc/PVDF contain three regions: the one-phase region, the liquid-liquid two-phase region, and the gel region. In the phase diagrams, the liquid-liquid demixing line (binodal) is located inside the gelation line. At low temperature, there exists a wide region between gelation line and binodal line. Gelation Could occur in the absence of liquid-liquid demixing, and becomes the dominant membrane formation mechanism. At high temperatures (60 degrees C), however, the gelation line approaches the binodal line, which results in a much smaller gelation zone. The kinetics of the solvent out-flux and water influx were enhanced, liquid-liquid demixing is the dominant mechanism. The membrane formation mechanisms at different temperature were confirmed by the light transmission measurements during membrane forming process and the morphologies of the membranes examined by SEM imaging. Thermally Induced Phase Separation of Poly(vinylidene Fluoride)/diluent Systems: Optical Microscope and Infrared Spectroscopy Studies

Abstract:ABSTRACTThermally induced phase separation (TIPS) has been developed to prepare porous membranes. The porous structures are mainly dependent on diluents adopted in the TIPS process. We obtained two typical morphologies of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes using cyclohexanone (CO) and propylene carbonate (PC) as diluents, respectively. SEM observation displays that porous spherulites are formed from PVDF/CO system, whereas smooth particles result from PVDF/PC system. The TIPS processes of these two systems have been investigated in detail by optical microscope observation and temperature‐dependent FTIR combined with two‐dimensional infrared correlation analysis. Rapid crystallization of PVDF can be seen around 110 °C in the PVDF/CO system, which is consistent with the results of temperature‐dependent FTIR spectra. The spectral evolution indicates a transform of PVDF from amorphous to α‐phase after 110 °C. The νs(CO) band at 1712 cm−1 narrows and the νs(CF) band at 1188 cm−1 shifts to 1192 cm−1 before crystallization, which implies the destruction of interaction between PVDF and CO. In contrast, the PVDF/PC system shows slow crystallization with all‐trans conformation assigned to β‐phase and γ‐phase below 60 °C but no obvious change of polymer−diluent interaction. We propose two mechanisms for the different phase behaviors of PVDF/CO and PVDF/PC systems: a solid−liquid phase separation after destruction of polymer−diluent interaction in the former, and a liquid−liquid phase separation process coupled with rich‐phase crystallization in the later. This work may provide new insight into the relationship among morphologies, crystal forms, and phase separation processes, which will be helpful to adjust membrane structure. © 2013 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:Poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) blend microporous membranes were prepared by PVDF/poly(methyl methacrylate) blend (with mass ratio = 70/30) via thermally induced phase separation. Benzophenone (BP) and methyl salicylate (MS) were used as diluents. The phase diagram calculations were carried out in terms of a pseudobinary system, considering the PVDF blend to be one component. The crytallization behaviors of PVDF in the dilutions were detected by differential scanning calorimetry measurement. In these two systems, the melting and crystallization temperatures leveled off in the low polymer concentration (<40 wt %), but shifted to a higher temperature when the polymer concentration >40 wt %. The calculated crystallinity of PVDF for samples with low polymer concentrations was greater than those with high polymer concentrations, because of the limited mobility of polymer chains at a high polymer concentration. The membrane structure as determined by scanning electron microscopy depended on the phase separation mechanism. The quenched samples mainly illustrated the occurrence of crystallization on the same time scale as the liquid-liquid phase separated, resulting in the obvious spherulitic structure with small pores in the spherulites. As the polymer concentration increased, the size of the spherulites and pores within the spherulite was decreased. The evaluated porosity for BP diluted system was higher than that for MS diluted system, and decreased with the increased polymer concentration. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Abstract:The effects of diluents, thermodynamic interactions, different quenching conditions and coarsening on the morphology of poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF) membranes via thermally induced phase separation were investigated. Scanning electron microscopy indicated that an interconnected spherulitic structure was obtained in the PVDF–DMP system, while the PVDF–DMP–DOS and PVDF–DMP–DOA systems showed a jagged and sharp-edged spherulitic structure. As the interactions decreased, the spherulitic structure was increasingly non-discernable and the value of porosity increased in the order of PVDF–DMP, PVDF–DMP–DOA, PVDF–DBP and PVDF–DMP–DOS. When quenching in 353 K and 368 K, the spherulities became more discernable, and the size of spherulity increased. When quenching in different conditions, the discernible spherulitic structure was obtained in ice water, a greater spherulitic size was obtained in a water bath at 303 K, and PVDF crystallized much slower and improved in an air bath.

Abstract:ABSTRACTIn this work, ultrafast differential scanning calorimetry (UFDSC) is used to study the dynamics of phase separation. Taking poly(vinyl methyl ether)/polystyrene (PVME/PS) blend as the example, we firstly obtained the phase diagram that has lower critical solution temperature (LCST), together with the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the homogeneous blend with different composition. Then, the dynamics of the phase separation of the PVME/PS blend with a mass ratio of 7:3 was studied in the time range from milliseconds to hours, by the virtue of small time and spatial resolution that UFDSC offers. The time dependence of the glass transition temperature (Tg) of PVME‐rich phase, shows a distinct change when the annealing temperature (Ta) changes from below to above 385 K. This corresponds to the transition from the nucleation and growth (NG) mechanism to the spinodal decomposition (SD) mechanism, as was verified by morphological and rheometric investigations. For the SD mechanism, the temperature‐dependent composition evolution in PVME‐rich domain was found to follow the Williams–Landel–Ferry (WLF) laws. © 2017 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. J. Polym. Polysulfone Membranes Via Thermally Induced Phase Separation

Abstract:Polysulfone (PSF) membranes have gained great attention in the fields of ultrafiltration, microfiltration, and thin film composite membranes for nanofiltration or reverse osmosis. For the first time, it is proposed to fabricate PSF membranes via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS) process using diphenyl sulfone (DPSO2) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) as mixed diluent. DPSO2 is chosen as a crystallizable diluent, while PEG is considered in terms of molecular weight (M w) and dosage. We systematically investigate the interactions between PSF, DPSO2 and PEG based on the simulation calculations and solubility parameter theory. It is inferred that DPSO2 has an excellent compatibility with PSF, and the addition of PEG results in the ternary system thermodynamically less stable and then facilitates its liquid-liquid (L-L) phase separation. SEM images indicate that cellular-like pores are obvious throughout the membrane when the PEG content in the mixed diluent is 25 wt%−35 wt%. We can facilely manipulate the pore size, water flux and mechanical properties of PSF membranes with the dosage of PEG-200, the M w of PEG or the cooling rate. The successful application of TIPS can provide a new approach for structure manipulation and performance enhancement of PSF membranes.
Kinetics of Thermally Induced Phase Separation in the PVDF Blend/Methyl Salicylate System and Its Effect on Membrane Structures

Abstract:Microporous membranes were prepared via thermally induced phase separation of a poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF)/poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) blend (with mass ratio = 70/30)/methyl salicylate system. The differential scanning calorimetry results revealed that the observation of double melting phenomenon in quenched samples was a result of a variation in the morphology (different crystal size or perfection of crystals), which formed during the sample preparation. When the samples were quenched at 118°C, 110°C, and 100°C, a spherulitic structure was present in the membranes due to the crystallization of PVDF. As the holding time period increased, the crystallization of PVDF was enhanced owing to the aggregation of a polymer-rich phase (PVDF/PMMA blend) during the phase separation. The structure of the resulting PVDF blend membranes, detected by scanning electron microscopy, was greatly affected by liquid–liquid phase separation and the crystallization of PVDF in the mixture.

Abstract:The phase behavior and thermally induced phase separation in blends of poly{styrene-co-[p-(2,2,2-trifluoro-1-hydroxy-1-trifluoromethyl)ethyl-α-methylstyrene]} (PS(OH)) and a thermotropic liquid crystalline polymer (LCP) were studied by optical microscopy (OM), infrared spectroscopy (IR) and time-resolved light scattering (TRLS). PS(OH) contains strong proton-donating groups —C(CF3)2OH, and the LCP is poly[p-(tert-butyl)phenylene fumarate] (PBPF), which is soluble in common solvents. For blends of PS(OH)/PBPF, the miscible region was found only at high PBPF compositions and low temperature due to intermolecular hydrogen bonding between —C(CF3)2OH groups of PS(OH) and the phenolic OH end-groups of PBPF according to IR. The PS(OH)/PBPF blend undergoes phase separation via spinodal decomposition (SD) during isothermal annealing in the two-phase regime of phase diagram. The SD yielded unique Vv and Hv scattering patterns, which can be attributed to regular periodic phase-separated structures composed of an anisotropic phase and an isotropic phase. Preliminary studies on the SD process by TRLS showed that the phase separation spontaneously occurs at a certain time, that might be associated with the presence of the LCP.

Abstract:The phase separation of the Pluronic L64/water/p-xylene system in mesoscopic region was simulated using MesoDyn and the results which are in agreement with the experiment results. Phase separation of the system did not take place in pure p-xylene or in the presence of a small amount of water, but with increasing of the concentration of water, phase separation of the system took place markedly and formed micelles with different shapes. This paper also compares the mesoscopic morphology formations of systems at different concentrations of solvents and discusses the effect of water during the phase separation. By analysing the water distributions of the systems after 1 000 simulation steps, we can proved that free water do exist in the micellar core.

Abstract:The effect of single and mixed solvent on the crystallization behavior of the PVDF/PMMA blend from solutions was investigated. The films cast from the good solvent N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) dominantly yielded the β-phase crystal with the highest crystallinity of PVDF. Those deposited from the methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) and tetrahydrofuran (THF) exhibited a mixture of α- and some extra β-phase crystals and presented the low crystallinity of PVDF. The crystallization behavior and morphology of the films cast from the mixed solvent (THF/DMF) revealed an enormous dependence on the DMF content. The increased DMF content in the mixed solvent enhanced the interactions between polymers and solvents, and favored the β-crystal of PVDF formation but hindered the α-phase of PVDF formation. Thus, the total crystallinity of PVDF in the blend film was decreased with the DMF content increasing, because of the decreased α-phase of PVDF. In addition, the morphological feature revealed that the voids between the PVDF spherulites were eliminated remarkably by blending with PMMA. The average size of the connected spherulite on top surface of the film can grow into larger as DMF content increased.

Abstract:The polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF)-diphenyl ketone (DPK) mixture was studied as a new system to prepare PVDF membranes via thermally induced phase separation (TIPS). The phenomena of liquid-liquid phase separation was found in this mixture when the temperature of mixture was decreasing and the PVDF concentration was less than 30 wt %. Using DPK as diluent, PVDF membrane with bicontinuous structure was obtained without necessity to add a nonsolvent or a stretching process further. The phase diagram of PVDF-DPK system was also constructed to help investigate the effect of PVDF concentration and coarsening temperature on morphology of resulting membrane. The experiments showed that high coarsening temperatures and low PVDF concentrations resulted in the formation of the large pore size membrane. The strength of the wet membrane was decreasing with decreasing PVDF concentration. On condition that the PVDF concentration was larger than 30 wt %, thermally induced solid-liquid separation occurred and bicontinuous structure disappeared. (C) 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
