Abstract:Many mechanical systems have configuration spaces that admit symmetries. Mathematically, such symmetries are modelled by the action of a group on a topological space. Several variations of topological complexity have emerged that take symmetry into account in various ways, either by asking that the motion planners themselves admit compatible symmetries, or by exploiting the symmetry to motion plan between functionally equivalent configurations. We will survey the main definitions due to Colman-Grant, Lubawski-Marzantowicz, Błaszczyk-Kaluba and Dranishnikov, and some related notions. We conclude with a short list of open problems.

Abstract:As has been known since the time of Gromov's Nonsqueezing Theorem, symplectic embedding questions lie at the heart of symplectic geometry. After surveying some of the most important ways of measuring the size of a symplectic set, these notes discuss some recent developments concerning the question of when a 4-dimensional ellipsoid can be symplectically embedded in a ball. This problem turns out to have unexpected relations to the properties of continued fractions and of exceptional curves in blow ups of the complex projective plane. It is also related to questions of lattice packing of planar triangles.

Abstract:Let $B^{2n}(R)$ denote the closed $2n$-dimensional symplectic ball of area $R$, and let $\Sigma_g(L)$ be a closed symplectic surface of genus $g$ and area $L$. We prove that there is a symplectic embedding $\bigsqcup_{i=1}^k B^4(R_i) \times \Sigma_g (L) \overset{s}\hookrightarrow \operatorname{int}(B^4(R))\times \Sigma_g (L)$ if and only if there exists a symplectic embedding $\bigsqcup_{i=1}^k B^4(R_i) \overset{s}\hookrightarrow \mathrm{int}(B^4(R))$. This lies in contrast with the standard higher dimensional ball packing problem $\bigsqcup\limits_{i=1}^k B^{2 n}(R_i)\overset{s}\hookrightarrow \mathrm{int}(B^{2n}(R))$ for $n >2$, which we conjecture (based on index behavior for pseudoholomorphic curves) is controlled entirely by Gromov's two ball theorem and volume considerations. We also deduce analogous results for stabilized embeddings of concave toric domains into convex domains, and we establish a stabilized version of Gromov's two ball theorem which holds in any dimension. Our main tools are: (i) the symplectic blowup construction along symplectic submanifolds, (ii) an h-principle for symplectic surfaces in high dimensional symplectic manifolds, and (iii) a stabilization result for pseudoholomorphic holomorphic curves of genus zero.

Dynamics of composite symplectic Dehn twists

Abstract:This paper appears as the confluence of hyperbolic dynamics, symplectic topology and low dimensional topology, etc. We show that composite symplectic Dehn twists have certain form of nonuniform hyperbolicity: it has positive topological entropy as well as two families of local stable and unstable Lagrangian manifolds, which are analogous to signatures of pseudo Anosov mapping classes. Moreover, we show that the rank of the Floer cohomology group of these compositions grows exponentially under iterations, which partially answers a question of Smith concerning the classification of symplectic mapping class group in higher dimensions. Finally, we propose a conjecture on the positive metric entropy of our model and point out its relationship with the standard map.

Abstract:The study of spatial symmetries was accomplished during the last century and had greatly improved our understanding of the properties of solids. Nowadays, the symmetry data of any crystal can be readily extracted from standard first-principles calculation. On the other hand, the topological data (topological invariants), the defining quantities of nontrivial topological states, are in general considerably difficult to obtain, and this difficulty has critically slowed down the search for topological materials. Here we provide explicit and exhaustive mappings from symmetry data to topological data for arbitrary gapped band structure in the presence of time-reversal symmetry and any one of the 230 space groups. The mappings are completed using the theoretical tools of layer construction and symmetry-based indicators. With these results, finding topological invariants in any given gapped band structure reduces to a simple search in the mapping tables provided.

On Topological Representation Theory from Quivers

Abstract:In this work, we introduce topological representations of a quiver as a system consisting of topological spaces and its relationships determined by the quiver. Such a setting gives a natural connection between topological representations of a quiver and diagrams of topological spaces. Firstly, we investigate the relation between the category of topological representations and that of linear representations of a quiver via P( ) - 𝒯𝒪𝒫^o and k -Mod, concerning (positively) graded or vertex (positively) graded modules. Secondly, we discuss the homological theory of topological representations of quivers via the -limit functor lim ^ , and use it to define the homology groups of topological representations of quivers via H _n . It is found that some properties of a quiver can be read from homology groups. Thirdly, we investigate the homotopy theory of topological representations of quivers. We define the homotopy equivalence between two morphisms in Top- Rep and show that the parallel Homotopy Axiom also holds for top-representations based on the homotopy equivalence. Last, we obtain the functor At^ from Top- Rep to Top and show that At^ preserves homotopy equivalence between morphisms. The relationship between the homotopy groups of a top-representation (T, f) and the homotopy groups of At^(T,f) is also established.

Abstract:Given the interest in relating the large $N$ limit of SU(N) to groups of area-preserving diffeomorphisms, we consider the topologies of these groups and show that both in terms of homology and homotopy, they are extremely different. Similar conclusions are drawn for other infinite dimensional classical groups.

Topology and its Applications

Abstract:In recent decades, topology has come to play an increasing role in some geometric aspects of Banach space theory. The class of so-called <math>w⁎</math>-locally relatively compact sets was introduced recently by Fonf, Pallares, Troyanski and the author, and were found to be a useful topological tool in the theory of isomorphic smoothness and polyhedrality in Banach spaces. We develop the topological theory of these sets and present some Banach space applications.

Symplectic rational homology ball fillings of Seifert fibered spaces

Abstract:We characterize when some small Seifert fibered spaces can be the convex boundary of a symplectic rational homology ball and give strong restrictions for others to bound such manifolds. As part of this, we show that the only spherical $3$-manifolds that are the boundary of a symplectic rational homology ball are the lens spaces $L(p^2,pq-1)$ found by Lisca and give evidence for the Gompf conjecture that Brieskorn spheres do not bound Stein domains in C^2. We also find restrictions on Lagrangian disk fillings of some Legendrian knots in small Seifert fibered spaces.

Symplectomorphisms and spherical objects in the conifold smoothing

Abstract:Let $X$ denote the `conifold smoothing', the symplectic Weinstein manifold which is the complement of a smooth conic in $T^*S^3$, or equivalently the plumbing of two copies of $T^*S^3$ along a Hopf link. Let $Y$ denote the `conifold resolution', by which we mean the complement of a smooth divisor in $\mathcal{O}(-1) \oplus \mathcal{O}(-1) \to \mathbb{P}^1$. We prove that the compactly supported symplectic mapping class group of $X$ splits off a copy of an infinite rank free group, in particular is infinitely generated; and we classify spherical objects in the bounded derived category $D(Y)$ (the three-dimensional `affine $A_1$-case'). Our results build on work of Chan-Pomerleano-Ueda and Toda, and both theorems make essential use of working on the `other side' of the mirror.

Abstract:We investigate spaces of symplectic embeddings of $n\leq 4$ balls into the complex projective plane. We prove that they are homotopy equivalent to explicitly described algebraic subspaces of the configuration spaces of $n$ points. We compute the rational homotopy type of these embedding spaces and their cohomology with rational coefficients. Our approach relies on the comparison of the action of $\mathrm{PGL}(3,\mathbb{C})$ on the configuration space of $n$ ordered points in $\mathbf{CP}^2$ with the action of the symplectomorphism group $\mathrm{Symp}(\mathbf{CP}^2)$ on the space of $n$ embedded symplectic balls.

Abstract: In this paper, we determine the Euler characteristics and signatures of the exact symplectic fillings of the contact double, 3-fold or 4-fold branched covers of the standard contact 3-sphere along certain transverse quasi-positive links. These links include all quasi-positive knots with crossing numbers smaller than 11 and all quasi-positive links with crossing numbers smaller than 12 and nonzero nullity.

Abstract:Kuranishi structures were introduced to symplectic topology by Fukaya and Ono and recently refined by Joyce, in order to extract homological data from compactified moduli spaces of holomorphic maps in cases where geometric regularization approaches such as perturbations of the almost complex structure do not yield a smooth structure on the moduli space. We give a general survey of regularization techniques in symplectic topology, pointing to some general analytic issues, and discussing some specific topological issues of the Kuranishi approach. In the main body of the paper we provide an abstract framework of Kuranishi atlases which separates the analytic and topological issues. Throughout, we focus on the most fundamental issues, which are already present in applying virtual transversality techniques to moduli spaces of holomorphic spheres without nodes or nontrivial isotropy. This is the reinstated 2013 version of this survey and sample construction. A generalized version of the topological theory is now available under 'The topology of Kuranishi atlases' <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1508.01844" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1508.01844">arXiv:1508.01844</a>, with the survey parts and VMC construction updated in 'The fundamental class of smooth Kuranishi atlases with trivial isotropy' <a class="link-https" data-arxiv-id="1508.01560" href="https://arxiv.org/abs/1508.01560">arXiv:1508.01560</a>.
