Abstract:This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and the volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces. Discrete subgroups of Lie groups are foundational objects in modern mathematics and occur naturally in different subjects. This new volume presents 15 papers treating discrete groups as they occur in areas such as algebra, analysis, geometry, number theory, and topology. Most of the papers are surveys, and this volume is intended to help graduate students and researchers better understand the structures and applications of discrete subgroups of Lie groups and locally symmetric spaces.

Abstract:We want to discuss various applications of modular forms in topology. The starting point is elliptic genus and its generalizations. The main techniques are the Atiyah-Singer index theorem, the Atiyah-Bott-Segal-Singer Lefschetz fixed point formula, Kac-Moody Lie algebras, modular forms and theta-functions. Just as the representations theory of classical Lie groups has close connections with the Atiyah-Singer index formula as exposed in [A1], the representation theory of loop groups plays very important role in our study. One of the most important new features of loop group representations is the modular invariance of the Kac-Weyl character formula, which allows us to derive many interesting new results and to unify many important old results in topology. In this paper we will develope along this line. We hope that the other features of loop group representations, such as fusion rules and tensor category structure may also be applied to topology. See the discussions in §3. The contents of this paper is organized in the following way. In §1 we introduce elliptic genus by combining index theory and the representation theory of loop groups. The relation of the classical index theory with representation theory of classical Lie groups was discussed in [A1]. Here one finds that just replacing the classical Lie groups by their corresponding loop groups, we get the complete theory of elliptic genus, or more generally the index theory on loop space. Especially the Dirac operator and the Witten genus of loop space are derived more convincingly in this way. Then all of the other well-known properties of elliptic genus, such as functional equations, characterizations by rigidity and fibrations, can be easily obtained. Here we only pick some less well-known results to discuss, for example the expressions of the parameters in elliptic genera in terms of theta-functions. Different from the classical Lie group case, a new feature in our situation appears, the modular invariance which, by combining with index theory, is applied to obtain many new topological results. This is the content of §2. Most results in this section are special cases of more general results. For simplicity we only give the main ideas of the proofs. We make some geometric constructions in §3 to understand elliptic cohomology. The construction in §3.3 is motivated by the vertex operator algebra construction of the monstrous moonshine module. Abstract:In this article, we develop the basic theory of digital topological groups. The basic definitions directly lead to two separate categories, based on the details of the continuity required of the group multiplication. We define $\NP_1$- and $\NP_2$-digital topological groups, and investigate their properties and algebraic structure. The $\NP_2$ category is very restrictive, and we give a complete classification of $\NP_2$-digital topological groups. We also give many examples of $\NP_1$-digital topological groups. We define digital topological group homomorphisms, and describe the digital counterpart of the first isomorphism theorem.

Topological automorphism groups of compact quantum groups

Abstract:We study the topological structure of the automorphism groups of compact quantum groups showing that, in parallel to a classical result due to Iwasawa, the connected component of identity of the automorphism group and of the “inner” automorphism group coincide. For compact matrix quantum groups, which can be thought of as quantum analogues of compact Lie groups, we prove that the inner automorphism group is a compact Lie group and the outer automorphism group is discrete. Applications of this to the study of group actions on compact quantum groups are highlighted. We end by providing examples of compact matrix quantum groups with infinitely-generated fusion rings, in stark contrast with the classical situation. Along the way we study the invariant theory of finite group actions on free Laurent rings and show that the rings of invariants are, in general, not finitely generated.

Abstract:In this article topologies on metagroups are studied. They are related with generalized $C^*$-algebras over ${\bf R}$ or ${\bf C}$. Homomorphisms and quotient maps on them are investigated. Structure of topological metagroups is scrutinized. In particular, topologies on smashed products and smashed twisted wreath products of metagroups are scrutinized, which are making them topological metagroups. Moreover, their inverse homomorphism systems are studied.

Abstract:We extend the Dikranjan-Uspenskij notions of c-compact and h-complete topological group to the morphism level, study the stability properties of the newly defined types of maps, such as closure under direct products, and compare them with their counterparts in topology. We assume Hausdorffness only when our proofs require us to do so, which leads to new results and the affirmation of some facts that were known in a Hausdorff context.

Abstract:It is important to classify covering subgroups of the fundamental group of a topological space using their topological properties in the topologized fundamental group. In this paper, we introduce and study some topologies on the fundamental group and use them to classify coverings, semicoverings, and generalized coverings of a topological space. To do this, we use the concept of subgroup topology on a group and discuss their properties. In particular, we explore which of these topologies make the fundamental group a topological group. Moreover, we provide some examples of topological spaces to compare topologies of fundamental groups.

Abstract:Groups with a topology that is in consistent one way or another with the algebraic structure are considered. Well-known classes of groups with a topology are topological, paratopological, semitopological, and quasitopological groups. We also study other ways of matching topology and algebraic structure. The minimum requirement in this paper is that the group is a right semitopological group (such groups are often called right topological groups). We study when a group with a topology is a topological group; research in this direction began with the work of Deane Montgomery and Robert Ellis. (Invariant) semi-neighborhoods of the diagonal are used as a means of study.

Abstract:A proof is given that a permutation group in which different finite sets have different stabilizers cannot satisfy any group law. For locally compact topological groups with this property, almost all finite subsets of the group are shown to generate free subgroups. Abstract:This paper develops a basic theory of H-groups. We introduce a special quotient of H-groups and extend some algebraic constructions of topological groups to the category of H-groups and H-maps. We use these constructions to prove some advantages in topological homotopy groups. Also, we present a family of spaces that their topological fundamental groups are indiscrete topological group and find out a family of spaces whose topological fundamental group is a topological group.

Abstract:We show that the fundamental groupoid~$\Pi_1(X)$ of a locally path connected semilocally simply connected space~$X$ can be equipped with a \emph{natural} topology so that it becomes a topological groupoid; we also justify the necessity and minimality of these two hypotheses on~$X$ in order to topologise the fundamental groupoid. We find that contrary to a belief -- especially among the Operator Algebraists -- the fundamental groupoid is not {\etale}. Further, we prove that the fundamental groupoid of a topological group, in particular a Lie group, is a \emph{transformation groupoid}; again, this result disproves a standard belief that the fundamental groupoids are \emph{far} away from being transformation groupoids. We also discuss the point-set topology on the fundamental groupoid with the intention of making it a locally compact groupoid.

Abstract:This paper is devoted to the study of a natural group topology on the fundamental group which remembers local properties of spaces forgotten by covering space theory and weak homotopy type. It is known that viewing the fundamental group as the quotient of the loop space often fails to result in a topological group; we use free topological groups to construct a topology which promotes the fundamental group of any space to topological group structure. The resulting invariant, denoted $\pi_{1}^{\tau}$, takes values in the category of topological groups, can distinguish spaces with isomorphic fundamental groups, and agrees with the quotient fundamental group precisely when the quotient topology yields a topological group. Most importantly, this choice of topology allows us to naturally realize free topological groups and pushouts of topological groups as fundamental groups via topological analogues of classical results in algebraic topology.

Abstract:In this paper, we prove several results concerning Polish group topologies on groups of non-singular transformation. We first prove that the group of measure-preserving transformations of the real line whose support has finite measure carries no Polish group topology. We then characterize the Borel $\sigma$-finite measures $\lambda$ on a standard Borel space for which the group of $\lambda$-preserving transformations has the automatic continuity property. We finally show that the natural Polish topology on the group of all non-singular transformations is actually its only Polish group topology.
