Abstract:Photoacoustic detection is a sensitive method for measurement of light-absorbing particles directly in the aerosol phase. In this article, we demonstrate a new sensitive technique for photoacoustic aerosol absorption measurements using a cantilever microphone for the detection of the photoacoustic signal. Compared to conventional diaphragm microphones, a cantilever offers increased sensitivity by up to two orders of magnitude. The measurement setup uses a photoacoustic cell from Gasera PA201 gas measurement system, which we have adapted for aerosol measurements. Here we reached a noise level of 0.013 Mm−1 (one standard deviation) with a sampling time of 20 s, using a simple single-pass design without a need for a resonant acoustic cell. The sampling time includes 10 s signal averaging time and 10 s sample exchange, since the photoacoustic cell is designed for closed cell operation. We demonstrate the method in measurements of size-selected nigrosin particles and ambient black carbon. Due to the exceptional sensitivity, the technique shows great potential for applications where low detection limits are required, for example size-selected absorption measurements and black carbon detection in ultra clean environments.

Abstract:Photoionization mass spectrometry (PI-MS) has become a versatile tool in the real-time analysis of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) from the atmosphere or exhaled breath. However, some key species, e.g., acetonitrile, are hard to measure due to their higher ionization energies than photon energy. In this study, the direct and sensitive detection of gaseous acetonitrile based on a photoinduced associative ionization (PAI) reaction was investigated with a laboratory-built PAI time-of-flight mass spectrometer (PAI-TOFMS). By doping CH2Cl2 in the photoionization ion source, the mass signal of acetonitrile that cannot be effectively obtained by photoionization appeared with an extremely high intensity through the PAI reaction between acetonitrile, CH2Cl2, and residual H2O in the system. Though the moisture in the sample gas has an evident impact on the detection efficiency of acetonitrile, with a relative signal intensity decreasing from 100% under dry conditions to 60% at saturated relative humidity, excellent detection sensitivity was still obtained for gaseous acetonitrile in different matrixes. The sensitivity calibration experiment showed that the detection sensitivities of acetonitrile in N2 buffer gas, exhaled gas, and outdoor air were 682.4 ± 5.2, 17.0 ± 0.7, and 23.9 ± 0.2 counts pptv-1, respectively, with an analysis time of 10 s. The corresponding 3σ LODs reached 0.22, 8.82, and 6.28 pptv, which are equivalent to 0.40, 16.0, and 11.4 ng m-3. The performance of the PAI-TOFMS was first demonstrated by analyzing exhaled acetonitrile from healthy non-smokers and smokers and continuous monitoring of acetonitrile in outdoor air. In summary, this study provides a new and highly sensitive method for the real-time detection of acetonitrile through mass spectrometry.

Abstract:Enhancement of trace gas detectability using photoacoustic spectroscopy requires the effective suppression of strong background noise for practical applications. An upgraded infrared broadband trace gas detection configuration was investigated based on a Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectrometer equipped with specially designed T-resonators and simultaneous differential optical and photoacoustic measurement capabilities. By using acetylene and local air as appropriate samples, the detectivity of the differential photoacoustic mode was demonstrated to be far better than the pure optical approach both theoretically and experimentally, due to the effectiveness of light-correlated coherent noise suppression of non-intrinsic optical baseline signals. The wavelet domain denoising algorithm with the optimized parameters was introduced in detail to greatly improve the signal-to-noise ratio by denoising the incoherent ambient interference with respect to the differential photoacoustic measurement. The results showed enhancement of sensitivity to acetylene from 5 ppmv (original differential mode) to 806 ppbv, a fivefold improvement. With the suppression of background noise accomplished by the optimized wavelet domain denoising algorithm, the broadband differential photoacoustic trace gas detection was shown to be an effective approach for trace gas detection.

Abstract:An exceptional property of photo-acoustic spectroscopy is the zero-background in wavelength modulation configuration while the signal varies linearly as a function of absorbed laser power. Here, we make use of this property by combining a highly sensitive cantilever-enhanced photo-acoustic detector, a particularly stable high-power narrow-linewidth mid-infrared continuous-wave optical parametric oscillator, and a strong absorption cross-section of hydrogen fluoride to demonstrate the ability of cantilever-enhanced photo-acoustic spectroscopy to reach sub-parts-per-trillion level sensitivity in trace gas detection. The high stability of the experimental setup allows long averaging times. A noise equivalent concentration of 650 parts-per-quadrillion is reached in 32 minutes.

Abstract:The photoacoustic effect caused by the absorption of the modulated radiation thereby leading to the generation of sound in the gas at the very same chopping frequency, has emerged as a valuable tool for a variety of applications. This is described in several excellent books and review articles on this topic [1,2,3,4,5]. The magnitude of the photoacoustic signal is directly proportional to the amount of the power absorbed by the gas and the concentration of the absorbing species. Throughout recent years frequent studies of atmospheric pollution using the photoacoustic effect in molecular gases in the infrared have been carried out with laser sources [6,7,8,9,10,11]. For a majority of gases, sub part per billion detection sensitivity limits for concentration have been reached with optimized cell designs under realistic atmospheric conditions.

Abstract:We present first results of a research project that has the goal to develop an analyzer for volatile organic compounds (VOCs) with extraordinarily high detection sensitivity and detection selectivity. Due to its high potential concerning these two key parameters, optical spectroscopy is employed. The new detection scheme is based on photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS). PA detection utilizes the fact, that the excitation energy of light absorbing molecules is essentially transferred into kinetic energy of the surrounding molecules via inelastic collisions. This causes a local pressure increase in the absorbing gas. If the excitation source is modulated, a sound wave is generated that can be detected by a microphone and phase-sensitively measured using a lock-in amplifier. A considerable challenge of this project is represented by the broad and strongly overlapping absorption bands of the hydrocarbons. Discrimination of the VOCs is possible only by using a spectrally tunable monochromatic radiation source in combination with a sophisticated data analysis algorithm. Therefore, we apply an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) with spectral emission between 3 and 4 mu m.

Abstract:Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) using two optical combs is a new-born technique, offering appealing features, including broad optical bandwidths, high resolutions, fast acquisition speeds, and wavelength-independent photoacoustic detection, for chemical sensing. However, its further application to, e.g., trace detection, is jeopardized due to the fundamentally and technically limited sensitivity and specificity. Here, we take a different route to comb-enabled PAS with acoustically enhanced sensitivity and nonlinear spectral hole-burning defined resolution. We demonstrate dual-comb quartz-enhanced PAS with two near-infrared electro-optic combs and a quartz tuning fork. Comb-line-resolved multiplexed spectra are acquired for acetylene with a single-pass detection limit at the parts-per-billion level. The technique is further extended to the mid-infrared (for methane), enabling improved sensitivity. More importantly, we measure nonlinear dual-comb photoacoustic spectra for the 12 C 2 H 2 ν 1 + ν 3 band P(17) transition with sub-Doppler pressure-broadening dominated homogeneous linewidths (e.g., 45.8 MHz), hence opening up new opportunities for Doppler-free photoacoustic gas sensing.

Abstract:Thanks to the available ultra-wide wavelength range compared with broadband laser sources, the use of blackbody radiators in photoacoustic spectroscopy features the simultaneous detection of multiple gas species in the presence of cross-interfering absorption lines. The major problem associated with broadband incoherent sources is less power and less stable intensity per wavenumber than lasers and leads to limited gas detection sensitivity. In this paper, the detectivity of a broadband double optical path differential photoacoustic system was enhanced with the development of dimension-optimized high-responsivity T-resonators for simultaneous multiple trace gas detection. Enhanced Q-factor and external noise suppression level constitute dual criteria for the optimization of T-resonators. Three digital signal processing algorithms were separately investigated which further improved gas dectectability. The capability of the multiple–trace-gas detection framework was verified by measuring CO2, C2H2 and H2O simultaneously. The spectral results processed by a wavelet denoising algorithm present the best performance in terms of background noise suppression and spectral feature fidelity. [Q2.2] With the absorption enhancement of the optimized T-cells and background suppression of the wavelet denoising algorithm, a broadband differential photoacoustic system was achieved with only a 30 mW globar source and normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient value of 4.1 × 10−10 W·cm−1·Hz−1/2 which is two orders of magnitude improvement over the original T-cell-based photoacoustic configuration. The noise equivalent detection limits were found to be 223 ppbv for CO2, 625 ppbv for C2H2 and 865 ppbv for H2O, respectively.

Abstract:We report multipass broadband photoacoustic spectroscopy of trace gases in the mid-infrared. The measurement principle of the sensor relies on supercontinuum-based Fourier transform photoacoustic spectroscopy (FT-PAS), in which a scanning interferometer modulates the intensity of a mid-infrared supercontinuum light source and a cantilever microphone is employed for sensitive photoacoustic detection. With a custom-built external Herriott cell, the supercontinuum beam propagates ten times through a miniature and acoustically non-resonant gas cell. The performance of the FT-PAS system is demonstrated by measuring the fundamental C-H stretch bands of various hydrocarbons. A noise equivalent detection limit of 11 ppb is obtained for methane (40 s averaging time, 15 μW/cm-1 incident power spectral density, 4 cm-1 resolution), which is an improvement by a factor of 12 compared to the best previous FT-PAS systems. High linearity and good stability of the sensor provide reliable identification of individual species from a gas mixture with strong spectral overlap, laying the foundation for sensitive and selective multi-species detection in small sample volumes.

Abstract:Benzene, toluene and xylene (BTX) are serious air pollutants emitted by the chemical industry. Real-time monitoring of these air pollutants would be a valuable tool to regulate emissions of these compounds and reduce the harm they cause to human health. Here we demonstrate the first detection of BTX using Incoherent Broadband Cavity Enhanced Absorption Spectroscopy (IBBCEAS). The instrument was operated in the deep-ultraviolet spectral region between 252 and 286 nm, where aromatic compounds have intense π→π* absorption bands. The mirror reflectivity was calibrated by two methods and exceeded 99.63% at 266 nm. At an integration time of 60 s, the 1σ measurement sensitivity was estimated to be 1.4 ppbv (1σ) for benzene, 8.7 ppbv (1σ) for toluene, 7.3 ppbv (1σ) for m-xylene and 3.0 ppbv (1σ) for p-xylene, respectively. The absorption cross-sections of BTX were measured in this work with an uncertainty of 10% at a resolution of 0.74 nm and were in good agreement with earlier studies, after accounting for differences in spectral resolution. To demonstrate the ability of the instrument to quantify complex mixtures, the concentrations of m-xylene and p-xylene were retrieved under five different mixing ratios. The IBBCEAS approach allows real time, in situ measurements with high selectivity, and may be valuable in applications not suited to long-path approaches like DOAS. Instrumental improvements and strategies for different atmospheric and analytical applications are discussed.

Abstract:We present a high sensitivity and long-term stability cavity-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy (CE-PAS) system with optical cavity and acoustic frequency dual-locking scheme for trace acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) detection. The first mechanism involves locking the optical wavelength to the cavity resonance by comparing the phase-sensitive component of the reflected light with a reference signal in a feedback loop. The second locking mechanism controls the gas proportion inside the photoacoustic cell to lock the acoustic frequency, suppressing the drift caused by environmental temperature variation. By minimizing amplitude fluctuations through dual-locking, the sensor achieves improved stability with reduced fluctuations from ±10.12 % to ±1.16 %. The linear responsivity and excellent linearity of the sensor are demonstrated over a concentration variation spanning four orders of magnitude. Experimental results showcase a minimum detection limit of 1.2 parts-per-billion (ppb) at an integration time of 400 s, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient of 1.37×10 −11 cm −1 ·W· Hz −1/2 for C 2 H 2 detection. Long-term stability is within ±2 % over a 15-day period. The combination of high sensitivity and long-term stability make this CE-PAS sensor suitable for a wide range of applications in environmental monitoring, industrial process control, and gas leak detection.

Abstract:Enhancing multi-gas detectability using photoacoustic spectroscopy capable of simultaneous detection, highly selectivity and less cross-interference is essential for dissolved gas sensing application. A T-type photoacoustic cell was designed and verified to be an appropriate sensor, due to the resonant frequencies of which are determined jointly by absorption and resonant cylinders. The three designated resonance modes were investigated from both simulation and experiments to present the comparable amplitude responses by introducing excitation beam position optimization. The capability of multi-gas detection was demonstrated by measuring CO, CH 4 and C 2 H 2 simultaneously using QCL, ICL and DFB lasers as excitation sources respectively. The influence of potential cross-sensitivity towards humidity have been examined in terms of multi-gas detection. The experimentally determined minimum detection limits of CO, CH 4 and C 2 H 2 were 89ppb, 80ppb and 664ppb respectively, corresponding to the normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficients of 5.75×10 −7 cm −1 ·W·Hz −1/2 , 1.97×10 −8 cm −1 ·W·Hz −1/2 and 4.23×10 −8 cm −1 ·W·Hz −1/2 .

Abstract:A high sensitivity and ultra-low concentration range photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) gas detection system, which was based on a novel trapezoid compound ellipsoid resonant photoacoustic cell (TCER-PAC) and partial least square (PLS), was proposed to detect acetylene (C 2 H 2 ) gas. In the concentration range of 0.5 ppm ~ 10.0 ppm, the limit of detection (LOD) values of TCER-PAC-based PAS system without data processing was 66.4 ppb, which was lower than that of the traditional trapezoid compound cylindrical resonant photoacoustic cell (TCCR-PAC). The experimental results indicated that the TCER-PAC had higher sensitivity than of TCCR-PAC. Within the concentration range of 12.5 ppb ~ 125.0 ppb, the LOD and limit of quantification (LOQ) of TCER-PAC-based PAS system combined with PLS regression algorithm were 1.1 ppb and 3.7 ppb, respectively. The results showed that higher detection sensitivity and lower LOD were obtained by PAS system with TCER-PAC and PLS than that of TCCR-PAC-based PAS system.

Abstract:We proposed and designed a high-sensitivity fiber-optic photoacoustic gas analyzer based on resonant Herriott multi-pass cell (MPC) and fiber-optic cantilever acoustic sensor, which realized the double enhancement of the excitation and detection of the photoacoustic signal. The chamber volume of the miniature photoacoustic cell was 157 mL. The laser was reflected 20 times and reached an optical path length of 4 m in the PA cell, achieving the excitation enhancement of the photoacoustic signal. We conducted a comparative experiment between the Herriott-MPC and the single-pass cell, the results showed that the 2f signal of the photoacoustic system based on Herriott-MPC was enhanced by about 16 times. By using a near-infrared laser with a center wavelength of 1651 nm, the performance of the PA gas analyzer for CH4 detection was evaluated. Experimental results show that the minimum detection limit (MDL) of the system is achieved to be 3.7 ppb. Furthermore, the calculated normalized noise equivalent absorption (NNEA) coefficient is equal to 8.3×10-10 cm-1WHz-1/2. The continuous monitoring of CH4 in the environment for five consecutive days proved the feasibility and stability of the trace gas analyzer.

Abstract:Photoacoustic spectroscopy (PAS) based gas sensors with high sensitivity, wide dynamic range, low cost, and small footprint are desirable in energy, environment, safety, and public health. However, most works have focused on either acoustic resonator to enhance acoustic wave or optical resonator to enhance optical wave. Herein, we develop a gas sensor based on doubly resonant PAS in which the acoustic and optical waves are simultaneously enhanced using combined optical and acoustic resonators in a centimeter-long configuration. Not only the lower detection limit is enhanced by the double standing waves, but also the upper detection limit is expanded due to the short resonators. As an example, we developed a sensor by detecting acetylene (C2H2), achieving a noise equivalent absorption of 5.7 × 10−13 cm−1 and a dynamic range of eight orders. Compared to the state-of-the-art PAS gas sensors, the developed sensor achieves a record sensitivity and dynamic range.

Thermodynamically and Kinetically Enhanced Benzene Vapor Sensor Based on the Cu-TCPP-Cu MOF with Extremely Low Limit of Detection

Abstract:As a carcinogenic and highly neurotoxic hazardous gas, benzene vapor is particularly difficult to be distinguished in BTEX (benzene, toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) atmosphere and be detected in low concentrations due to its chemical inertness. Herein, we develop a depth-related pore structure in Cu-TCPP-Cu to thermodynamically and kinetically enhance the adsorption of benzene vapor and realize the detection of ultralow-temperature benzene gas. We find that the in-plane π electronic nature and proper pore sizes in Cu-TCPP-Cu can selectively induce the adsorption and diffusion of BTEX. Interestingly, the theoretical calculations (including density functional theory (DFT) and grand canonical Monte Carlo (GCMC) simulations) exhibit that benzene molecules are preferred to adsorb and array as a consecutive arrangement mode in the Cu-TCPP-Cu pore, while the TEX (toluene, ethylbenzene, xylene) dominate the jumping arrangement model. The differences in distribution behaviors can allow adsorption and diffusion of more benzene molecules within limited room. Furthermore, the optimal pore-depth range (60-65 nm) of Cu-TCPP-Cu allows more exposure of active sites and hinders the gas-blocking process. The optimized sensor exhibits ultrahigh sensitivity to benzene vapor (155 Hz/μg@1 ppm), fast response time (less than 10 s), extremely low limit of detection (65 ppb), and excellent selectivity (83%). Our research thus provides a fundamental understanding to design and optimize two-dimensional metal-organic framework (MOF)-based gas sensors.

Abstract:We demonstrate cantilever-enhanced photoacoustic spectroscopy in the mid-infrared using a supercontinuum source. The approach is broadband, compact, and allows for higher photoacoustic signal intensity and enhanced signal-to-noise ratio as compared to systems employing conventional back body radiation sources. Using this technique, we perform spectroscopic measurements of the full ro-vibrational band structure of water vapor at 1900 nm and methane at 3300 nm with relative signal enhancement factors of 70 and 19, respectively, when compared to measurements that use a black body radiation source. Our results offer novel perspective for photoacoustic detection opening the door to compact and sensitive broadband analyzers in the mid-infrared spectral region.

Abstract:We demonstrate the usefulness of a nanosecond-pulsed single-mode mid-infrared (MIR) optical parametric oscillator (OPO) for photoacoustic (PA) spectroscopic measurements. The maximum wavelength ranges for the signal and idler are 1.4 μm to 1.7 μm and 2.8 μm to 4.6 μm, respectively, with a MIR output power of up to 500 mW, making the OPO useful for different spectroscopic PA trace-gas measurements targeting the major market opportunity of environmental monitoring and breath gas analysis. We perform spectroscopic measurements of methane (CH4), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), and ammonia (NH3) in the 2.8 μm to 3.7 μm wavelength region. The measurements were conducted with a constant flow rate of 300 mL/min, thus demonstrating the suitability of the gas sensor for real-time trace-gas measurements. The acquired spectra are compared with data from the HITRAN database, and good agreement is found, demonstrating a resolution bandwidth of 1.5 cm1. An Allan deviation analysis shows that the detection limit for methane at optimum integration time for the PA sensor is 8 ppbV (nmol/mol) at 105 s of integration time, corresponding to a normalized noise equivalent absorption coefficient of 2.9×10-7 W cm-1 Hz-1/2.
