Abstract:In this paper, a new NOx removal control technique coupled with energy recovery in a sintering plant is proposed. On the basis of energy calculation, it was found that the energy of sintered ore was large enough to supply the energy necessary to heat effluent flue gas to the catalytic temperature window. Moreover, the experimental results showed that sintered ore had a significant effect on catalytic reducing NO with adding NH3. The maximum NO catalytic reduction efficiency could reach 38% at 673 K, which means that the effluent flue gas from a sinter machine did not need further treatment to reach the limit of national pollutants emission standard of China.

Abstract:NOx emission of coke combustion in iron ore sintering was modeled by overall reaction rate equations of NOx formation and reduction. Incorporating into a previous sintering heat treatment model, overall NOx emission can be predicted and the simulated results were well agreed with four sinter pot tests under varying conditions which are similar to actual production. In sintering, NOx emission is significantly related to fuel combustion. Due to heat input by ignition and smaller airflow in the initial stage of sintering, the predicted NOx emission has a higher value of about 350ppm first then it decreases a little and keeps at a relatively constant level of about 300ppm until the burn-through point, and decreases rapidly as a result of the accomplishment of coke combustion. Simulation results indicate that fuel NOx is the main NOx emission in sintering while thermal NOx is rarely produced since the bed temperature is much lower than 1800K. The generated NOx could be reduced not only on the surface and in the pores of coke but also by CO around coke particles, about 50% and 10% of the generated NOx could be reduced by char and CO, respectively. Increasing coke rate and decreasing coke size promote NOx generation by accelerating the coke combustion. The reduction extent by char is greatly influenced by contact between NOx and char while the reduction extent by CO is mainly determined by the combustion atmosphere.

Abstract:This paper focused on the effect of sinter behavior with biomass. The changes of the relevant performance indexes of this sinter behavior, emission laws of harmful gases in flue gas emissions and the mechanism of emission reduction was studied in this paper. The results showed that, when the biomass amount is 0,28 %, the sinter index can meet production requirement, the porosity of sinter increased by 18,5 %, the sinter reduction degree increased by 2,66 %, the SO2 emissions of harmful gases in the flue gas reduced by about 14 %, the amount of NOx about 19 % lower.
Modified biomass fuel instead of coke for iron ore sintering

Abstract:Owing to majority of sintering fuel gas pollutants comes from the coke, modified charcoal replaced coke for iron ore sintering to achieve the emissions reduction of the pollutants in this study. By modifying biomass fuel with CaO and urea, the specific surface area, pore volume and pore diameter were reduced to 12.942 m2 g−1, 1.326e-02 cc g−1 and 18.865 nm. The experimental results of sintering cup showed that the vertical sintering speed increased, the burning through point advanced, the sinter drum index decreased gradually, and the sintering yield increased initially and then decreased with the increasing of modified charcoal content. The optimum proportion of modified charcoal instead of coke powder was determined to be 40%. Meanwhile, application of the 40% modified charcoal to sintering resulted in a decrease of 45.85% for SO2 and a decrease of 54.26% for NOx emissions.

Abstract:This paper explores NOx emission during iron ore sintering on a pilot-scale pot. A novel technique of using a three-layered bed structure was adopted to study the role of coke level, properties and combustion behavior on NOx emission. In addition, the lime content of the mix was also altered to understand the effect of the melt formation process. Thirteen sinter pot tests were employed to analyze the influence of coke combustion on NOx emission. As the flame front descended down the pot, NOx emission decreased because of increasing bed temperatures. For this reason, it is to be expected that increasing coke rate will result in higher sinter bed temperature and lower conversion of coke-N to NOx. However, overall NOx emission is little changed because more coke means higher N availability. Increasing basicity (CaO/SiO2) from 1.9 to 2.4 in raw mix results in the decrease of NOx emission, about 5%. Increasing coke size may result in the decrease or increase of NOx emission. Placing coke particles on the outside of granules can lower NOx emission in the middle and bottom layers, by 415%. NOx emission in the iron ore sinter process is determined by the conversion of coke-N to NOx and nitrogen source in sinter mix. The atmosphere around coke particles is very important for NOx reduction, and NOx emission will increase by around 15% when oxygen increases by 1 vol.%. During iron ore sintering, temperature has great influence on NOx emission, with levels decreasing by 1525% for a 100 K temperature increase.

Abstract:As the emission control regulations get stricter, the NOx reduction in the sintering process becomes an important environmental concern owing to its role in the formation of photochemical smog and acid rain. The NOx emissions from the sintering machine account for 48% of total amount from the iron and steel industry. Thus, it is essential to reduce NOx emissions from the sintering machine, for the achievement of clean production of sinter. Ca-Fe oxides, serving as the main binding phase in the sinter, are therefore used as additives into the sintering mixture to reduce NOx emissions. The results show that the NOx reduction ratio achieves 27.76% with 8% Ca-Fe oxides additives since the Ca-Fe oxides can advance the ignition and inhibit the nitrogen oxidation compared with the conventional condition. Meanwhile, the existence of Ca-Fe oxides was beneficial to the sinter quality since they were typical low melting point compounds. The optimal mass fraction of Ca-Fe oxides additives should be less than 8% since the permeability of sintering bed was significantly decreased with a further increase of the Ca-Fe oxides fines, inhibiting the mineralization reaction of sintering mixture. Additionally, the appropriate particle size can be obtained when mixing an equal amount of Ca-Fe oxides additives of −0. 5 mm and 0. 5−3. 0 mm in size.

Abstract:Steel industry nitrogen oxides (NO x ) emission requirements are getting increasingly rigorous. Calcium ferrite around coal or coke fines controls the combustion of nitrogen monoxide (NO) reduction by carbon monoxide (CO) in an iron ore sintering bed. This control lacked mechanistic research. A hypothesis that it belongs to the redox mechanism. In an atmosphere of a combustion boundary layer with 13500 ppm CO and 450 ppm NO at 1000 °C, the transient-response method was used to investigate the effects of CO and NO on the calcium ferrite (CaFe 2 O 4 ). The activity of CaFe 2 O 4 and its reduction products in NO reduction was examined. The results show that CaFe 2 O 4 features strong basic sites with NO storage capacity of 158.8 μmol/g⋅catalyst at high temperatures to promote the competitive adsorption of CO and NO. The CaFe 2 O 4 reduction path by CO, which is not affected by NO, is CaFe 2 O 4 → Fe-FeO- dicalcium ferrite(Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 ) → Fe-CaO. The reduced calcium ferrites have a catalytic effect of 100 % NO removal and display more pores. After CaFe 2 O 4 reduction, the Fe-CaO oxidation path by NO is Fe-CaO → Fe 3 O 4 -Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 → CaFe 2 O 4 . Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 redox is also involved in the redox cycle that Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 → Fe-CaO by CO and then Fe-CaO → Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 by NO. A strategy of Fe-CaO around fuels is proposed to further improve the combustion control by expanding the reducing layer in the atmosphere and generating more Ca 2 Fe 2 O 5 .

Abstract:Reducing carbon dioxide (CO 2 ) emissions in the iron and steel industry plays a crucial role in addressing global climate change. One significant technological solution for reducing CO 2 emissions in iron and steel production is the recycling of waste heat. Hot air sintering has the potential to decrease CO 2 emissions from flue gas by reusing hot flue gas in the production process. This can result in a reduction in the consumption of fossil fuels. Usually, the relationship between the hot air temperature and the carbon content determines the CO 2 emission reduction effect. In order to meet the demand for reducing CO 2 emissions, this paper thoroughly investigates the mechanism of CO 2 reduction by hot air sintering through sintering pot experiments. It precisely establishes the correlation between hot air temperature and carbon content, and suggests strategies for effectively managing hot air sintering based on scientific principles. The results show that hot air sintering achieves a reduction in CO 2 emissions by enhancing fuel combustion heat utilization and heat substitution. On the one hand, the heat of the sinter bed surface layer is increased, which improves the mineralization conditions and increases the sintered mineral quantity and quality, thus reducing the CO 2 emission by 4.4%; on the other hand, the waste heat is returned to the sinter bed to replace part of the fuel combustion heat, thus reducing the CO 2 emission by 17.7%. The experimental results show that the best carbon reduction effect is achieved at a hot air temperature of 300 °C and a solid fuel ratio of 4.7% (labelled T300-C47), which reduces carbon emissions by 17.7% and improves the quality of the sintered minerals. Combined with the actual production, in the range of 200–300 °C hot air, by increasing the hot air temperature to replace the solid fuel with equal heat can realize the hot air sintering to reduce CO 2 emissions and improve the sintering production. The research provides theoretical guidance for the clean production of iron and steel sintering and energy saving and carbon reduction.

Economic and Carbon Emission Analysis of Two Typical Denitrification Systems for Sintering Process in the Iron and Steel Industry

Abstract:The transition of the Chinese iron and steel industry to ultralow emissions has accelerated the development of denitrification technologies. Considering the existing dual carbon targets, carbon emissions must be considered as a critical indicator when comparing denitrification systems. Consequently, this study provided a comprehensive cost-benefit model for denitrification in the steel industry, encompassing additional carbon emissions resulting from the implementation of denitrification systems. Activated-carbon adsorption and selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems are two efficient techniques for controlling NOx emissions during sintering. Based on this model, a cost-benefit analysis of these two typical systems was conducted, and the results indicated that the unit flue-gas abatement costs of SCR and activated-carbon adsorption systems were 0.00275 and 0.0126 CNY/m3, and the unit flue-gas abatement benefits were 0.0072 and 0.0179 CNY/m3, respectively. Additionally, the effect of operational characteristics on operating costs, including duration and material prices, was analyzed. When treating the flue gas, the two systems released 0.0020 and 0.0060 kg/m3 of carbon dioxide, respectively. The primary sources of carbon emissions from the SCR and activated-carbon adsorption systems are the production of reducing agents and system operations, respectively. Furthermore, considering the features of the activated carbon adsorption system for simultaneous desulfurization, a SCR- wet flue gas desulfurization (WFGD) technology route was developed for comparison with the activated carbon adsorption system.

Abstract:In iron ore sintering process, coke combustion can influence the NOx emission. At the same time, there are other sintering parameters which can also affect the NOx emission, such as water content, limestone particle size, MgO content and return fines content. This work focuses on the influence of these parameters on the NOx emission in sintering process by pilot scale tests. 14 experiments were designed for testing the influence of these parameters at different locations of the sinter bed. Three layer sintering method was used and the NOx emission from different layers was measured. These parameters influence the granule properties, permeability of the sintering bed, and calcium ferrites formation and distribution, and then influence the NOx emission. The return fine content has the greatest impact. The conversion ratio of char nitrogen to NOx increased by about 7%, when the return fine content increased from 10% to 30% in the middle layer, and the conversion ratio of the upper and lower layers increased by about 3% and 11%, respectively. Abstract:Using a clean fuel produced by electrolysis named Brown gas to assist sintering in the iron ore sintering process was proposed to reduce coke consumption and carbon emissions. The effect of additional injection of Brown gas on the combustion characteristics and the quality of the sintered ore were explored. An optimal fuel ratio was investigated by gradually reducing the coke ratio based on Brown gas injection. The experimental results show that additional injection of Brown gas improves the thermal mode of the sintering bed, improves fuel combustion efficiency, prolongs the duration time of melting temperature, and the sintered ore yield and shatter strength first increases and then decreases, reaching the maximum value at an injection concentration of 2%. Based on a Brown gas injection concentration of 2%, the coke ratio can be reduced from 4.5% to 4% without affecting the quality of the sintered ore. As the coke ratio further decreases to 3.5%, the quality of the sintered ore deteriorates even if the Brown gas injection concentration increases to 3%. Based on a 2% Brown gas injection, the consumption of coke can be reduced by 11.1%, and the carbon emissions during the sintering process can be reduced by 11.1%.

Abstract:In order to systematically elucidate the combustion performance of fuel during sintering, this paper explores the influence of three factors, namely coal substitution for coke, quasi-particle structure and the coupling effect with reduction and oxidation of iron oxide, on fuel combustion characteristics, and carries out the kinetic calculation of monomer blended fuel (MBF) and quasi-granular fuel (QPF). The results show that replacing coke powder with anthracite can accelerate the whole combustion process. MBF and QPF are more consistent with the combustion law of the double-parallel random pore model. Although the quasi-particle structure increases the apparent activation energy of fuel combustion, it can also produce a heat storage effect on fuel particles, improve their combustion performance, and reduce the adverse effect of diffusion on the reaction process. In the early stage of reaction, the coupling between combustion of volatiles and reduction of iron oxide is obvious. The oxidation of iron oxide will occur again when the combustion reaction of fuel is weakened.
Intelligent Optimization and Impact Analysis of Energy Efficiency and Carbon Reduction in the High-Temperature Sintered Ore Production Process

Abstract:The coordinated optimization of energy conservation, efficiency improvement, and pollution reduction in the sintering production process is vital for the efficient and sustainable development of the sintering department. However, previous studies have shown shortcomings in the multi-objective collaborative optimization of sintering systems and the quantification of pollutant impacts. To address these, this paper proposes a multi-objective optimization method integrated with the NSGA-III algorithm and establishes an integrated system optimization model for sintered ore production and high-temperature waste heat recovery. The results demonstrate significant improvements: energy utilization efficiency increased by 0.67%, energy consumption decreased by 17.3 MJ/t, production costs were reduced by 11.45 CNY/t, and the emissions of CO2, SO2, and NOx were reduced by 0.464 kg/t, 0.034 kg/t, and 0.008 kg/t, respectively. Additionally, the study identified optimal configuration parameters and analyzed the quantitative impact of several key factors on multiple indicators. The results also show that reducing the water content of the mixture, decreasing the middling coal content in the fuel, and increasing the thickness of the material layer are effective strategies to reduce energy consumption and pollutant emissions in the sintering process. Overall, implementing these optimizations can bring significant economic and environmental benefits to the steel industry.

Abstract:For green production of iron ore sintering, the research on replacing traditional coke with clean energy such as biochar is a new hot topic. Most of the work conducted in biomass fuel utilization in sintering is done on a laboratory or pilot-scale. Little work was reported by using mathematical models to predict the influence of biomass-based fuel replacement on sintering performance quantitatively. In this paper, a more comprehensive numerical model that incorporates most of the significant reaction processes and heat transfer modes was proposed first, especially with considerations of coke/biochar dual-fuel phase heat supply and their pyrolysis, volatiles release, and combustion processes. Experimental data of the sintering pot reasonably agreed with the numerical results, which validated the model. Based on the equivalent fixed carbon method, the combustion and sintering behaviors in replacing proportions, particle size, and fuel types of commercial biochar for coke in the sintering bed were compared. With the lower replacement proportions (<20 %), both two biochars (Oak and Pine) can ensure thermal state indicators (PT, RT, MQI, CR) and combustion performance indicators (FFS and combustion efficiency), and keep the yield enough high. When the replacement proportion exceeds 50 %, the sintering index is worsened significantly. The emission of NO x can be decreased by 57.62 % when a 100 % replacement proportion of biochar is used. The results also indicate that coarsening particle size (2.4 mm was recommended for use) can further improve sintering indicators, and make Oak char 50 % replacing proportion reach the level of all coke method. The performance of pine sintering is even better than Oak sintering. The multiphase multicomponent model is used to give a mechanism explanation for the behavior and performance of biochar replacing coke in the sintering process.

Influence Factors on PM2.5 and PM10 Emissions in Iron Ore Sintering Process

Abstract:Influences of factors on PM10/2.5 (particulate matters less than 10/2.5 μm in aerodynamic) emission in iron ore sintering process have been investigated using a lab-scale sinter pot. Research findings show that increasing moisture content contributes to decreasing the emission concentration of PM10/2.5 due to the stronger scrubbing effect of over-wetted layer; increasing coke breeze rate would increase the generation of PM10/2.5 since more trace elements are volatilized and conversed into particle phase. Prolonging granulation time can improve the mechanical strength of granules and also restrain the removal of volatile trace elements to particulate matter, which enables to reduce PM10/2.5 emissions. The utilization of recycling materials remarkably enhances PM10/2.5 emissions for more fine particles (<10/2.5 μm) are brought in and more volatile trace elements are entrained into particulate matters. Taking sintering indexes into consideration, applying recycling materials wisely or adding solid sorbents serve as more prospective approaches than merely regulating process parameters. This information is able to guide the development of in-bed controlling techniques for reducing PM10/2.5 emissions.
Study on the release pattern of NO x precursors during the reduction process of iron ore-biomass composite pellets

Abstract:Walnut hulls, buckwheat hulls, anthracite coal powder and coke powder were selected as reductants, respectively, and mixed with hematite for the preparation of carbon-containing pellets. The effects of reduction temperature and C/O molar ratio on the reduction efficiency of pellets were investigated. In particular, the reaction mechanism and the release pattern of NH 3 and HCN in the complex reaction process of direct-reduction ironmaking were analyzed via XRD, XPS and TG-FTIR. The results showed that the optimum degree of reduction (90 %) could be obtained in conditions of dwelling time = 30 min, C/O molar ratio = 1.2 and roasting time = 1000 °C. It showed that the reduction process of iron ore powder followed the law of Fe 2 O 3 → Fe 3 O 4 → FeO → Fe reduction step by step. The release of NH 3 and HCN is inversely proportional to C/O, and the Fe x O y is the main factor inhibiting their release. In the mentioned optimal reaction conditions, the conversion rate of N to NH 3 and HCN in the case of biomass as a reductant is reduced by 15–20 % compared with using conventional reductants (such as coal powder and coke powder). More N exists in the solid-phase products when biomass as a reductant. Besides, to further explore the effects of Fe and Fe 2+ on the NO x precursors generation from the pyrolysis of biomass, it was shown by XPS that the existence of N in biomass is mainly in the form of amines (N-P), and the N endowment in coal and coke powders is mainly in the form of pyrroles (N-5). Subsequently, 2,5-diketopiperazine (DKP) was chosen as a model compound for quantum chemistry simulation. The results revealed that Fe and Fe 2+ elevated the Mayer bond level of DKP, and improved the energy barrier for the NO x precursor generation. The inhibitory effect of Fe on the HCN was better than Fe 2+ , the inhibitory effect of Fe 2+ on the NH 3 was better than Fe. In brief, the raw biomass as reducing agent for direct reduction ironmaking basically achieved the synergistic effect on direct reduced iron (DRI) yield and NO x reduction.

Evaluation of the Adhering Layer Ratio of Iron Ore Granules and Its Influence on Combustion-Generated NO X Emission in Iron Ore Sintering

Abstract:In iron ore sintering, the granulation process is the first and an important step. As the fine particles adhere to the coarse coke particles, the NO x emission generated from coke combustion may be expected to be influenced by that adhering layer. In this study, the granule size distributions and adhering ratios were evaluated by a granulation model. Granulation experiments were also carried out to obtain the granule size distribution and adhering ratio. The influence of the adhering layer on NO x emissions from the combustion of S type granules was studied by tube furnace experiments. Conclusions include: (1) The adhering ratio predicted from the granulation model can be used as a qualitative index for the evaluation of NO x emission from coke combustion. (2) The influence of the adhering layer on NO x emissions was enhanced with increasing adhering layer thickness of S type granules, and the NO x reduction was enhanced at higher temperatures (around 1373 K), but weakened at lower temperatures (around 1173 K).

Abstract:Denitration (De-NOx) over activated cokes (ACs) for sintering flue gas needs intensification. Gaseous reactions in a gas mixture containing NO, NO2, and NH3, with the effect of O2 concentration and moisture, were taken into consideration in the study of NOx conversion over ACs. Experimental studies on NOx conversion with and without NH3 over ACs were conducted using a fixed-bed reactor at 100 °C. The results demonstrated that moisture significantly affected NOx removal over ACs, especially the NO2 conversion. Under dry conditions, a disproportionation reaction of NO2 over ACs dominated NOx conversion with no NH3, whereas apparent fast selective catalytic reduction (SCR) over the ACs was observed in the presence of NH3. Regardless of the presence of absence of NH3 in wet mixtures, NO2 adsorption on ACs via the disproportionation route dominated the NOx conversion. Increasing the NO2/NO ratio in the simulated flue gas enhanced the NOx conversion rate over ACs. −C(ONO2) deposition on ACs generated by the disproportionation route inhibited NOx conversion with time. O3 oxidation was found to be efficient in increasing the NO2/NO ratio and intensifying the NOx conversion compared with commercially direct NH3-SCR over ACs. Increasing the temperature and decreasing the gas hourly space velocity can promote NOx conversion over ACs after O3 oxidation. NO oxidized with O3 coupled with NH3 spray and continuous regeneration of ACs is a potential method for removing NOx from sintering flue gas.This article has not yet been cited by other publications.

Abstract:Flue gas recirculation has been introduced into iron ore sintering process to reduce pollutant emissions. Compared with the conventional process, the sintering indices reduce gradually with decreasing O-2 content in the recirculating gas. With sufficient O-2, the principle on the use of flue gas recirculation is proposed. The heat loss caused by the decrease in O-2 content is compensated by 250 degrees C gas and 0.5% CO. The flame and heat transfer fronts of the sintering bed coincide using mixed gases of no more than 6% CO2 and 8% H2O (g). A novel technology of 35.5% flue gas recirculation ratio is proposed with qualified sintering indices.
