Abstract:The control of molecular structure of polyolefins has long been known to be essential to the control of melt flow and physical properties. In particular the control of the high and low molecular weight tails of the molecular weight distribution (MWD) and the distribution of comonomer (CD) in polyolefins is highly desirable for the production of optimum properties in many commercial applications. With the introduction of EXXPOL TM polymers this is now possible. This document examines the effects of these variables on both physical and melt flow properties of polyolefins. Particular emphasis is placed on (1) the properties of narrow MWD (M w /M n = 2.0) and narrow CD resins and (2) the combination of these narrowly distributed resins to optimize properties. The properties examined include the melt flow effects of viscosity/shear rate response and melt strength as well as the physical properties of toughness (tear and impact strengths), modulus and melting behavior.
