Engineering Fracture Mechanics
Abstract:A novel method to conduct rubber tensile tests is developed to investigate the effect of the loading rate on the interfacial properties of viscoelastic materials. Based on tensile tests conducted at loading rates ranging from 0.1 to 500 mm/min, an "increasing elastic strain theory" is proposed to establish a novel rate-dependent traction–separation law, which enables the characterization of the mechanical response of viscoelastic interfaces more accurately compared with the traditional law. The image processing algorithm is elaborated using MATLAB to analyze the morphology of the damage for viscoelastic materials. It is found that the roughness of the fracture surface decreases as the loading rate increases. In addition, the interface-dominated viscoelastic behavior of thermoplastic composites is simulated using reliable input parameters that are obtained via the proposed tensile test method. Our work provides a strategy for elucidating the loading rate dependence of the interfacial properties of viscoelastic materials.
