Abstract:We investigate representations of Coxeter groups into $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ as geometric reflection groups which are convex cocompact in the projective space $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. We characterize which Coxeter groups admit such representations, and we fully describe the corresponding spaces of convex cocompact representations as reflection groups, in terms of the associated Cartan matrices. The Coxeter groups that appear include all infinite, word hyperbolic Coxeter groups; for such groups the representations as reflection groups that we describe are exactly the projective Anosov ones. We also obtain a large class of nonhyperbolic Coxeter groups, thus providing many examples for the theory of nonhyperbolic convex cocompact subgroups in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ developed in arXiv:1704.08711.

Abstract:It is an open question whether right-angled Coxeter groups have unique group-equivariant visual boundaries. Croke and Kleiner present a right-angled Artin group with more than one visual boundary. In this paper we present a right-angled Coxeter group with non-unique equivariant visual boundary. The main theorem is that if right-angled Coxeter groups act geometrically on a Croke-Kleiner spaces, then the local angles in those spaces all have to be right angles. We present a specific right-angled Coxeter group with non-unique equivariant visual boundary. However, we conjecture that the right an- gled Coxeter groups that can act geometrically on a given CAT(0) space are far from unique.

Abstract:We present ESO/VLT spectra in the 2.9--4.1 micron range for a large sample of infrared stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), selected on the basis of MSX and 2MASS colours to be extremely dust-enshrouded AGB star candidates. Out of 30 targets, 28 are positively identified as carbon stars, significantly adding to the known population of optically invisible carbon stars in the LMC. We also present spectra for six IR-bright stars in or near three clusters in the LMC, identifying four of them as carbon stars and two as oxygen-rich supergiants. We analyse the molecular bands of C2H2 at 3.1 and 3.8 micron, HCN at 3.57 micron, and sharp absorption features in the 3.70--3.78 micron region that we attribute to C2H2. There is evidence for a generally high abundance of C2H2 in LMC carbon stars, suggestive of high carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratios at the low metallicity in the LMC. The low initial metallicity is also likely to have resulted in less abundant HCN and CS. The sample of IR carbon stars exhibits a range in C2H2:HCN abundance ratio. We do not find strong correlations between the properties of the molecular atmosphere and circumstellar dust envelope, but the observed differences in the strengths and shapes of the absorption bands can be explained by differences in excitation temperature. High mass-loss rates and strong pulsation would then be seen to be associated with a large scale height of the molecular atmosphere.

Abstract:We show that for many right-angled Artin and Coxeter groups, all cocompact cubulations coarsely look the same: they induce the same coarse median structure on the group. These are the first examples of non-hyperbolic groups with this property. For all graph products of finite groups and for Coxeter groups with no irreducible affine parabolic subgroups of rank $\geq 3$, we show that all automorphism preserve the coarse median structure induced, respectively, by the Davis complex and the Niblo-Reeves cubulation. As a consequence, automorphisms of these groups have nice fixed subgroups and satisfy Nielsen realisation.

Abstract:We introduce the notion of dynamic asymptotic dimension growth for actions of discrete groups on compact spaces, and more generally for locally compact étale groupoids with compact unit space. Using the work of Bartels, Lück, and Reich to bridge our notion for group actions with asymptotic dimension growth for groups, thus providing many concrete examples for our notion. Moreover, we show that the asymptotic dimension growth for a discrete metric space of bounded geometry is equivalent to the dynamic asymptotic dimension growth for its associated coarse groupoid, hence deducing that the coarse groupoid with subexponential dynamic asymptotic dimension growth is amenable. More generally, every $\sigma$-compact locally compact Hausdorff étale groupoid with compact unit space having dynamic asymptotic dimension growth at most $x^{\alpha}$ $(0<\alpha<1)$ is amenable.

Abstract:In this paper, we study a natural class of groups that act as affine transformations of $${\mathbb {T}}^N$$. We investigate whether these solvable, “abelian-by-cyclic," groups can act smoothly and nonaffinely on $${\mathbb {T}}^N$$ while remaining homotopic to the affine actions. In the affine actions, elliptic and hyperbolic dynamics coexist, forcing a priori complicated dynamics in nonaffine perturbations. We first show, using the KAM method, that any small and sufficiently smooth perturbation of such an affine action can be conjugated smoothly to an affine action, provided certain Diophantine conditions on the action are met. In dimension two, under natural dynamical hypotheses, we get a complete classification of such actions; namely, any such group action by $$C^r$$ diffeomorphisms can be conjugated to the affine action by $$C^{r-\varepsilon }$$ conjugacy. Next, we show that in any dimension, $$C^1$$ small perturbations can be conjugated to an affine action via $$C^{1+\varepsilon }$$ conjugacy. The method is a generalization of the Herman theory for circle diffeomorphisms to higher dimensions in the presence of a foliation structure provided by the hyperbolic dynamics.

Abstract:We consider the class of those Coxeter groups for which removing from the Cayley graph any tubular neighbourhood of any wall leaves exactly two connected components. We call these Coxeter groups bipolar. They include both the virtually Poincare duality Coxeter groups and the infinite irreducible 2-spherical ones. We show in a geometric way that a bipolar Coxeter group admits a unique conjugacy class of Coxeter generating sets. Moreover, we provide a characterisation of bipolar Coxeter groups in terms of the associated Coxeter diagram.

Amenable actions of real and $p$-adic algebraic groups

Abstract:Let $K$ be a locally compact field of characteristic 0. Let $G$ be a linear algebraic group defined over $K$, acting algebraically on an algebraic variety $V$. We prove that the action of $G(K)$ (the group of $K$-rational points of $G$) on $V(K)$ is topologically amenable, if and only if all points stabilizers in $G(K)$ are solvable-by-compact. This follows by combining a result by Borel-Serre \cite{BoSe} with the following fact: let $G$ be a second countable locally compact group acting continuously on a second countable locally compact space $Y$. If the action $G\curvearrowright Y$ is smooth (i.e. the Borel structure on $G\backslash Y$ is countably separated), then topological amenability of $G\curvearrowright Y$ is equivalent to amenability of all point stabilizers in $G$.

Abstract:Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. We moreover deduce multiple further implications of this property. In particular, we obtain that all noncrossing partition lattices of W associated to different Coxeter elements are isomorphic. We also prove that there is a simply transitive action of the Galois group of the field of definition of W on the set of conjugacy classes of Coxeter elements. Finally, we extend several of these properties to Springer’s regular elements of arbitrary order.

Abstract:We prove that two angle-compatible Coxeter generating sets of a given finitely generated Coxeter group are conjugate provided one of them does not admit any elementary twist. This confirms a basic case of a general conjecture which describes a potential solution to the isomorphism problem for Coxeter groups.

Abstract:We initiate a study of asymptotic dimension for locally compact groups. This notion extends the existing invariant for discrete groups and is shown to be finite for a large class of residually compact groups. Along the way, the notion of Hirsch length is extended to topological groups and classical results of Hirsch and Malcev are extended using a topological version of the Poincaré lemma. We show that polycyclic-by-compact groups and compactly generated, topologically virtually nilpotent groups are residually compact, and that compactly generated nilpotent groups are polycyclic-by-compact. We prove that for compactly generated, solvable-by-compact groups the asymptotic dimension is majorized by the Hirsch length, and equality holds for polycyclic-by-compact groups. We extend the class of elementary amenable groups beyond the discrete case and show that topologically elementary amenable groups with finite Hirsch length have finite asymptotic dimension. We prove that a topologically elementary amenable group of finite Hirsch length with no nontrivial locally elliptic normal closed subgroup is solvable-by-compact. Finally, we show that a totally disconnected, locally compact, second countable [SIN]-group has finite asymptotic dimension, if all of its discrete quotients are so.
