Abstract:Let W be an irreducible finitely generated Coxeter group. The geometric representation of W in GL(V) provides a discrete embedding in the orthogonal group of the Tits form (the associated bilinear form of the Coxeter group). If the Tits form of the Coxeter group is non-positive and non-degenerate, the Coxeter group does not contain any finite index subgroup isomorphic to an irreducible lattice in a semisimple group of R-rank greater or equal to 2.

Abstract Regular Polytopes of Finite Irreducible Coxeter Groups

Abstract:Here, for $W$ the Coxeter group $\mathrm{D}_n$ where $n > 4$, it is proved that the maximal rank of an abstract regular polytope for $W$ is $n - 1$ if $n$ is even and $n$ if $n$ is odd. Further it is shown that $W$ has abstract regular polytopes of rank $r$ for all $r$ such that $3 \leq r \leq n - 1$, if $n$ is even, and $3 \leq r \leq n$, if $n$ is odd. The possible ranks of abstract regular polytopes for the exceptional finite irreducible Coxeter groups are also determined.

Abstract:In this paper we prove a series of matching theorems for two sets of Coxeter generators of a finitely generated Coxeter group that identify common features of the two sets of generators. As an application, we describe an algorithm for finding a set of Coxeter generators of maximum rank for a finitely generated Coxeter group.

Abstract:We present ESO/VLT spectra in the 2.9--4.1 micron range for a large sample of infrared stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), selected on the basis of MSX and 2MASS colours to be extremely dust-enshrouded AGB star candidates. Out of 30 targets, 28 are positively identified as carbon stars, significantly adding to the known population of optically invisible carbon stars in the LMC. We also present spectra for six IR-bright stars in or near three clusters in the LMC, identifying four of them as carbon stars and two as oxygen-rich supergiants. We analyse the molecular bands of C2H2 at 3.1 and 3.8 micron, HCN at 3.57 micron, and sharp absorption features in the 3.70--3.78 micron region that we attribute to C2H2. There is evidence for a generally high abundance of C2H2 in LMC carbon stars, suggestive of high carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratios at the low metallicity in the LMC. The low initial metallicity is also likely to have resulted in less abundant HCN and CS. The sample of IR carbon stars exhibits a range in C2H2:HCN abundance ratio. We do not find strong correlations between the properties of the molecular atmosphere and circumstellar dust envelope, but the observed differences in the strengths and shapes of the absorption bands can be explained by differences in excitation temperature. High mass-loss rates and strong pulsation would then be seen to be associated with a large scale height of the molecular atmosphere.

Abstract:We study the restriction of the strong Bruhat order on an arbitrary Coxeter group $W$ to cosets $x W_L^\theta$, where $x$ is an element of $W$ and $W_L^\theta$ the subgroup of fixed points of an automorphism $\theta$ of order at most two of a standard parabolic subgroup $W_L$ of $W$. When $\theta\neq\mathrm{id}$, there is in general more than one element of minimal length in a given coset, and we explain how to relate elements of minimal length. We also show that elements of minimal length in cosets are exactly those elements which are minimal for the restriction of the Bruhat order.

Abstract:We combinatorially characterize the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ of conjugacy classes of involutions in any Coxeter group in terms of higher rank odd graphs. This notion naturally generalizes the concept of odd graphs, used previously to count the number of conjugacy classes of reflections. We provide uniform bounds and discuss some extremal cases, where the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ is smallest or largest possible. Moreover, we provide formulae for $\mathrm{cc}_2$ in free and direct products as well as for some finite and affine types, besides computing $\mathrm{cc}_2$ for all triangle groups, and all affine irreducible Coxeter groups of rank up to eleven.

Abstract:Stanley's formula for the number of reduced expressions of a permutation regarded as a Coxeter group element raises the question of how to enumerate the reduced expressions of an arbitrary Coxeter group element. We provide a framework for answering this question by constructing combinatorial objects that represent the inversion set and the reduced expressions for an arbitrary Coxeter group element. The framework also provides a formula for the length of an element formed by deleting a generator from a Coxeter group element. Fan and Hagiwara, et al$.$ showed that for certain Coxeter groups, the short-braid avoiding elements characterize those elements that give reduced expressions when any generator is deleted from a reduced expression. We provide a characterization that holds in all Coxeter groups. Lastly, we give applications to the freely braided elements introduced by Green and Losonczy, generalizing some of their results that hold in simply-laced Coxeter groups to the arbitrary Coxeter group setting.

Abstract:Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. We moreover deduce multiple further implications of this property. In particular, we obtain that all noncrossing partition lattices of W associated to different Coxeter elements are isomorphic. We also prove that there is a simply transitive action of the Galois group of the field of definition of W on the set of conjugacy classes of Coxeter elements. Finally, we extend several of these properties to Springer’s regular elements of arbitrary order.

Abstract:We prove that two angle-compatible Coxeter generating sets of a given finitely generated Coxeter group are conjugate provided one of them does not admit any elementary twist. Abstract:Parabolic subgroups $W_I$ of Coxeter systems $(W,S)$, as well as their ordinary and double quotients $W / W_I$ and $W_I \backslash W / W_J$, appear in many contexts in combinatorics and Lie theory, including the geometry and topology of generalized flag varieties and the symmetry groups of regular polytopes. The set of ordinary cosets $w W_I$, for $I \subseteq S$, forms the Coxeter complex of $W$, and is well-studied. In this article we look at a less studied object: the set of all double cosets $W_I w W_J$ for $I, J \subseteq S$. Double coset are not uniquely presented by triples $(I,w,J)$. We describe what we call the lex-minimal presentation, and prove that there exists a unique such object for each double coset. Lex-minimal presentations are then used to enumerate double cosets via a finite automaton depending on the Coxeter graph for $(W,S)$. As an example, we present a formula for the number of parabolic double cosets with a fixed minimal element when $W$ is the symmetric group $S_n$ (in this case, parabolic subgroups are also known as Young subgroups). Our formula is almost always linear time computable in $n$, and we show how it can be generalized to any Coxeter group with little additional work. We spell out formulas for all finite and affine Weyl groups in the case that $w$ is the identity element.

Abstract:In this paper, we show that any Coxeter graph which defines a higher rank Coxeter group must have disjoint induced subgraphs each of which defines a hyperbolic or higher rank Coxeter group. We then use this result to demonstrate several classes of Coxeter graphs which define hyperbolic Coxeter groups.

Abstract:Let $\mathcal{W}$ be the set of strongly real elements of $W$, a Coxeter group. Then for $w \in \mathcal{W}$, $e(w)$, the excess of $w$, is defined by $e(w) = \min\{\ell(x) + \ell(y) - \ell(w) \; | \; w=xy, x^2 = y^2 = 1\}$. When $W$ is finite we may also define $E(w)$, the reflection excess of $w$. The main result established here is that if $W$ is finite and $X$ is a $W$-conjugacy class, then there exists $w \in X$ such that $w$ has minimal length in $X$ and $e(w) = 0 = E(w)$.

Abstract:Recently, Fang, Shru and Pan [3] suggested a new way to generate uniform designs based on cyclic Latin squares. The new designs have better uniformity than some other known uniform designs. In their paper, Fang, Shiu and Pan indicated that the rank of the cyclic Latin squares used in the construction of uniform designs is important and they wanted to know the maximum and the minimum possible values of the rank of all cyclic Latin squares. In this paper we prove that the maximum value of the rank of cyclic Latin squares of order n is n while the minimum value is is the prime decomposition of n and Π is the Euler function

Abstract:We lay the foundations of the first-order model theory of Coxeter groups. Firstly, with the exception of the 2-spherical non-affine case (which we leave open), we characterize the superstable Coxeter groups of finite rank, which we show to be essentially the Coxeter groups of affine type. Secondly, we characterize the Coxeter groups of finite rank which are domains, a central assumption in the theory of algebraic geometry over groups, which in many respects (e.g. λ-stability) reduces the model theory of a given Coxeter system to the model theory of its associated irreducible components. In the second part of the paper we move to specific definability questions in right-angled Coxeter groups (RACGs) and 2-spherical Coxeter groups. In this respect, firstly, we prove that RACGs of finite rank do not have proper elementary subgroups which are Coxeter groups, and prove further that reflection independent ones do not have proper elementary subgroups at all. Secondly, we prove that if the monoid S i m ( W , S ) of S-self-similarities of W is finitely generated, then W is a prime model of its theory. Thirdly, we prove that in reflection independent RACGs of finite rank the Coxeter elements are type-determined. We then move to 2-spherical Coxeter groups, proving that if ( W , S ) is irreducible, 2-spherical even and not affine, then W is a prime model of its theory, and that if W Γ and W Θ are as in the previous sentence, then W Γ is elementary equivalent to W Θ if and only if Γ ≅ Θ , thus solving the elementary equivalence problem for most of the 2-spherical Coxeter groups. In the last part of the paper we focus on model theoretic applications of the notion of reflection length from Coxeter group theory, proving in particular that affine Coxeter groups are not connected.
