Abstract:We use probabilistic methods to prove that many Coxeter groups are incoherent. In particular, this holds for Coxeter groups of uniform exponent > 2 with sufficiently many generators.

Abstract:Let W be an irreducible finitely generated Coxeter group. The geometric representation of W in GL(V) provides a discrete embedding in the orthogonal group of the Tits form (the associated bilinear form of the Coxeter group). If the Tits form of the Coxeter group is non-positive and non-degenerate, the Coxeter group does not contain any finite index subgroup isomorphic to an irreducible lattice in a semisimple group of R-rank greater or equal to 2.

Abstract:For each positive integer $k$ we present an example of Coxeter system $(G_k,S_k)$ such that $G_k$ is a word-hyperbolic Coxeter group, for any two generating reflections $s,t\in S_k$ the product $st$ has finite order, and the Coxeter graph of $S_k$ has negative inertia index equal to $k$. In particular, $G_k$ cannot be embedded into pseudo-orthogonal group $O(n,k-1)$ for any $n$ as a reflection group with generating set being reflections w.r.t. $(G_k,S_k)$

Abstract:Much is known about random right-angled Coxeter groups (i.e., right-angled Coxeter groups whose defining graphs are random graphs under the Erdös–Rényi model). In this paper, we extend this model to study random general Coxeter groups and give some results about random Coxeter groups, including some information about the homology of the nerve of a random Coxeter group and results about when random Coxeter groups are δ -hyperbolic and when they have the FC-type property.

Abstract:Parabolic subgroups $W_I$ of Coxeter systems $(W,S)$, as well as their ordinary and double quotients $W / W_I$ and $W_I \backslash W / W_J$, appear in many contexts in combinatorics and Lie theory, including the geometry and topology of generalized flag varieties and the symmetry groups of regular polytopes. The set of ordinary cosets $w W_I$, for $I \subseteq S$, forms the Coxeter complex of $W$, and is well-studied. In this article we look at a less studied object: the set of all double cosets $W_I w W_J$ for $I, J \subseteq S$. Double coset are not uniquely presented by triples $(I,w,J)$. We describe what we call the lex-minimal presentation, and prove that there exists a unique such object for each double coset. Lex-minimal presentations are then used to enumerate double cosets via a finite automaton depending on the Coxeter graph for $(W,S)$. As an example, we present a formula for the number of parabolic double cosets with a fixed minimal element when $W$ is the symmetric group $S_n$ (in this case, parabolic subgroups are also known as Young subgroups). Our formula is almost always linear time computable in $n$, and we show how it can be generalized to any Coxeter group with little additional work. We spell out formulas for all finite and affine Weyl groups in the case that $w$ is the identity element.

Automorphisms of odd Coxeter groups

Abstract:An odd Coxeter group $W$ is one which admits a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ for which all the exponents $m_{ij}$ are either odd or infinity. The paper investigates the family of odd Coxeter groups whose associated labeled graphs $\mathcal{V}_{(W,S)}$ are trees. It is known that two Coxeter groups in this family are isomorphic if and only if they admit Coxeter systems having the same rank and the same multiset of finite exponents. In particular, each group in this family is isomorphic to a group that admits a Coxeter system whose associated labeled graph is a star shaped tree. We give the complete description of the automorphism group of this group, and derive a sufficient condition for the splitting of the automorphism group as a semi-direct product of the inner and the outer automorphism groups. As applications, we prove that Coxeter groups in this family satisfy the $R_\infty$-property and are (co)-Hopfian. We compare structural properties, automorphism groups, $\R_\infty$-property and (co)-Hopfianity of a special odd Coxeter group whose only finite exponent is three with the braid group and the twin group.

Abstract:We extend the notion of proper elements to all Coxeter groups. For all infinite families of finite Coxeter groups we prove that the probability a random element is proper goes to zero in the limit. This proves a conjecture of the third author and A. Yong regarding the proportion of Schubert varieties that are Levi spherical for all infinite families of Weyl groups. We also enumerate the proper elements in the exceptional Coxeter groups.

Around first-order rigidity of Coxeter groups

Abstract:By the work of Sela, for any free group $F$, the Coxeter group $W_ 3 = \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \ast \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z} \ast \mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}$ is elementarily equivalent to $W_3 \ast F$, and so Coxeter groups are not closed under elementary equivalence among finitely generated groups. In this paper we show that if we restrict to models which are generated by finitely many torsion elements (finitely torsion-generated), then we can recover striking rigidity results. Our main result is that if $(W, S)$ is a Coxeter system whose irreducible components are either spherical, or affine or (Gromov) hyperbolic, and $G$ is finitely torsion-generated and elementarily equivalent to $W$, then $G$ is itself a Coxeter group. This combines results of the second author et al. from [MPS22, PS23] with the following main hyperbolic result: if $W$ is a Coxeter hyperbolic group and $G$ is $\mathrm{AE}$-equivalent to $W$ and finitely torsion-generated, then $G$ belongs to a finite collection of Coxeter groups (modulo isomorphism). Furthermore, we show that there are two hyperbolic Coxeter groups $W$ and $W'$ which are non-isomorphic but $\mathrm{AE}$-equivalent. We also show that, on other hand, if we restrict to certain specific classes of Coxeter groups then we can recover the strongest possible form of first-order rigidity, which we call first-order torsion-rigidity, namely the Coxeter group $W$ is the only finitely torsion-generated model of its theory. Crucially, we show that this form of rigidity holds for the following classes of Coxeter groups: even hyperbolic Coxeter groups and free products of one-ended or finite hyperbolic Coxeter groups. We conjecture that the same kind of phenomena occur for the whole class of Coxeter groups. In this direction, we prove that if $W$ and $W'$ are even Coxeter groups which are elementarily equivalent, then they are isomorphic.

Abstract:Let W be an arbitrary Coxeter group of simply-laced type (possibly infinite but of finite rank), u,v be any two elements in W, and i be a reduced word (of length m) for the pair (u,v) in the Coxeter group W\times W. We associate to i a subgroup Gamma_i in GL_m(Z) generated by symplectic transvections. We prove among other things that the subgroups corresponding to different reduced words for the same pair (u,v) are conjugate to each other inside GL_m(Z). We also generalize the enumeration result of the first three authors (see AG/9802093) by showing that, under certain assumptions on u and v, the number of Gamma_i(F_2)-orbits in F_2^m is equal to 3\times 2^s, where s is the number of simple reflections that appear in a reduced decomposition for u or v and F_2 is the two-element field.

Involutions in Coxeter groups

Abstract:We combinatorially characterize the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ of conjugacy classes of involutions in any Coxeter group in terms of higher rank odd graphs. This notion naturally generalizes the concept of odd graphs, used previously to count the number of conjugacy classes of reflections. We provide uniform bounds and discuss some extremal cases, where the number $\mathrm{cc}_2$ is smallest or largest possible. Moreover, we provide formulae for $\mathrm{cc}_2$ in free and direct products as well as for some finite and affine types, besides computing $\mathrm{cc}_2$ for all triangle groups, and all affine irreducible Coxeter groups of rank up to eleven.

Abstract:We lay the foundations of the first-order model theory of Coxeter groups. Firstly, with the exception of the 2-spherical non-affine case (which we leave open), we characterize the superstable Coxeter groups of finite rank, which we show to be essentially the Coxeter groups of affine type. Secondly, we characterize the Coxeter groups of finite rank which are domains, a central assumption in the theory of algebraic geometry over groups, which in many respects (e.g. λ-stability) reduces the model theory of a given Coxeter system to the model theory of its associated irreducible components. In the second part of the paper we move to specific definability questions in right-angled Coxeter groups (RACGs) and 2-spherical Coxeter groups. In this respect, firstly, we prove that RACGs of finite rank do not have proper elementary subgroups which are Coxeter groups, and prove further that reflection independent ones do not have proper elementary subgroups at all. Secondly, we prove that if the monoid S i m ( W , S ) of S-self-similarities of W is finitely generated, then W is a prime model of its theory. Thirdly, we prove that in reflection independent RACGs of finite rank the Coxeter elements are type-determined. We then move to 2-spherical Coxeter groups, proving that if ( W , S ) is irreducible, 2-spherical even and not affine, then W is a prime model of its theory, and that if W Γ and W Θ are as in the previous sentence, then W Γ is elementary equivalent to W Θ if and only if Γ ≅ Θ , thus solving the elementary equivalence problem for most of the 2-spherical Coxeter groups. In the last part of the paper we focus on model theoretic applications of the notion of reflection length from Coxeter group theory, proving in particular that affine Coxeter groups are not connected.

Abstract:A group $G$ is said to be just infinite if $G$ itself is infinite but all proper quotients of $G$ are finite. We show that a Coxeter group $W_\Gamma$ is just infinite if and only if $\Gamma$ is isomorphic to one of the following graphs: $\widetilde{A}_1$, $\widetilde{A}_n (n\geq 2)$, $\widetilde{B}_n (n\geq 3)$, $\widetilde{C}_n (n\geq 2)$, $\widetilde{D}_n(n\geq 4)$, $\widetilde{E}_6$, $\widetilde{E}_7$, $\widetilde{E}_8$, $\widetilde{F}_4$ or $\widetilde{G}_2$. Moreover, we show that just infinite Coxeter groups are profinitely rigid among all Coxeter groups.

Abstract:We consider the class of those Coxeter groups for which removing from the Cayley graph any tubular neighbourhood of any wall leaves exactly two connected components. We call these Coxeter groups bipolar. They include both the virtually Poincare duality Coxeter groups and the infinite irreducible 2-spherical ones. We show in a geometric way that a bipolar Coxeter group admits a unique conjugacy class of Coxeter generating sets. Moreover, we provide a characterisation of bipolar Coxeter groups in terms of the associated Coxeter diagram.

Abstract:A solution of the isomorphism problem is presented for the class of Coxeter groups W that have a finite set of Coxeter generators S such that the underlying graph of the presentation diagram of the system (W,S) has the property that every cycle of length at least four has a cord. As an application, we construct counterexamples to two main conjectures concerning the isomorphism problem for Coxeter groups.

Higher incoherence of the automorphism groups of a free group

Abstract:Let $F_n$ be the free group on $n \geq 2$ generators. We show that for all $1 \leq m \leq 2n-3$ (respectively for all $1 \leq m \leq 2n-4$) there exists a subgroup of $\operatorname{Aut}(F_n)$ (respectively $\operatorname{Out}(F_n)$) which has finiteness of type $F_{m}$ but not of type $FP_{m+1}(\mathbb{Q})$, hence it is not $m$-coherent. In both cases, the new result is the upper bound $m= 2n-3$ (respectively $m = 2n-4$), as it cannot be obtained by embedding direct products of free noncyclic groups, and certifies higher incoherence up to the virtual cohomological dimension and is therefore sharp. As a tool of the proof, we discuss the existence and nature of multiple inequivalent extensions of suitable finite-index subgroups of $\operatorname{Aut}(F_2)$.

Abstract:We prove that two angle-compatible Coxeter generating sets of a given finitely generated Coxeter group are conjugate provided one of them does not admit any elementary twist. This confirms a basic case of a general conjecture which describes a potential solution to the isomorphism problem for Coxeter groups.

Abstract:We present ESO/VLT spectra in the 2.9--4.1 micron range for a large sample of infrared stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), selected on the basis of MSX and 2MASS colours to be extremely dust-enshrouded AGB star candidates. Out of 30 targets, 28 are positively identified as carbon stars, significantly adding to the known population of optically invisible carbon stars in the LMC. We also present spectra for six IR-bright stars in or near three clusters in the LMC, identifying four of them as carbon stars and two as oxygen-rich supergiants. We analyse the molecular bands of C2H2 at 3.1 and 3.8 micron, HCN at 3.57 micron, and sharp absorption features in the 3.70--3.78 micron region that we attribute to C2H2. There is evidence for a generally high abundance of C2H2 in LMC carbon stars, suggestive of high carbon-to-oxygen abundance ratios at the low metallicity in the LMC. The low initial metallicity is also likely to have resulted in less abundant HCN and CS. The sample of IR carbon stars exhibits a range in C2H2:HCN abundance ratio. We do not find strong correlations between the properties of the molecular atmosphere and circumstellar dust envelope, but the observed differences in the strengths and shapes of the absorption bands can be explained by differences in excitation temperature. High mass-loss rates and strong pulsation would then be seen to be associated with a large scale height of the molecular atmosphere.

Abstract:In deformation-rigidity theory it is often important to know whether certain bimodules are weakly contained in the coarse bimodule. Consider a bimodule $H$ over the group algebra $\mathbb{C}[\Gamma]$, with $\Gamma$ a discrete group. The starting point of this paper is that if a dense set of the so-called coefficients of $H$ is contained in the Schatten $\mathcal{S}_p$ class $p \in [2, \infty)$ then the $n$-fold tensor power $H^{\otimes n}_\Gamma$ for $n \geq p/2$ is quasi-contained in the coarse bimodule. We apply this to gradient bimodules associated with the carré du champ of a symmetric quantum Markov semi-group. For Coxeter groups we give a number of characterizations of having coefficients in $\mathcal{S}_p$ for the gradient bimodule constructed from the word length function. We get equivalence of: (1) the gradient-$\mathcal{S}_p$ property introduced by the second named author, (2) smallness at infinity of a natural compactification of the Coxeter group, and for a large class of Coxeter groups: (3) walks in the Coxeter diagram called parity paths. We derive several strong solidity results. In particular, we extend current strong solidity results for right-angled Hecke von Neumann algebras beyond right-angled Coxeter groups that are small at infinity. Our general methods also yield a concise proof of a result by T. Sinclair for discrete groups admitting a proper cocycle into a $p$-integrable representation.
