Abstract:Let G be one of the classical Lie groups GL(n+1)(R), GL(n+1)(C), U(p, q + 1), O(p, q + 1), On+1(C), SO(p, q + 1), SOn+1(C), and let G' be respectively the subgroup GL(n)(R), GL(n)(C), U(p, q), O(p, q), O-n(C), SO(p, q), SO (C), embedded in G in the standard way. We show that every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G' occurs with multiplicity at most one in every irreducible Casselman-Wallach representation of G. Abstract:Stanley's formula for the number of reduced expressions of a permutation regarded as a Coxeter group element raises the question of how to enumerate the reduced expressions of an arbitrary Coxeter group element. We provide a framework for answering this question by constructing combinatorial objects that represent the inversion set and the reduced expressions for an arbitrary Coxeter group element. The framework also provides a formula for the length of an element formed by deleting a generator from a Coxeter group element. Fan and Hagiwara, et al$.$ showed that for certain Coxeter groups, the short-braid avoiding elements characterize those elements that give reduced expressions when any generator is deleted from a reduced expression. We provide a characterization that holds in all Coxeter groups. Lastly, we give applications to the freely braided elements introduced by Green and Losonczy, generalizing some of their results that hold in simply-laced Coxeter groups to the arbitrary Coxeter group setting.

Abstract:Parabolic subgroups $W_I$ of Coxeter systems $(W,S)$, as well as their ordinary and double quotients $W / W_I$ and $W_I \backslash W / W_J$, appear in many contexts in combinatorics and Lie theory, including the geometry and topology of generalized flag varieties and the symmetry groups of regular polytopes. The set of ordinary cosets $w W_I$, for $I \subseteq S$, forms the Coxeter complex of $W$, and is well-studied. In this article we look at a less studied object: the set of all double cosets $W_I w W_J$ for $I, J \subseteq S$. Double coset are not uniquely presented by triples $(I,w,J)$. We describe what we call the lex-minimal presentation, and prove that there exists a unique such object for each double coset. Lex-minimal presentations are then used to enumerate double cosets via a finite automaton depending on the Coxeter graph for $(W,S)$. As an example, we present a formula for the number of parabolic double cosets with a fixed minimal element when $W$ is the symmetric group $S_n$ (in this case, parabolic subgroups are also known as Young subgroups). Our formula is almost always linear time computable in $n$, and we show how it can be generalized to any Coxeter group with little additional work. We spell out formulas for all finite and affine Weyl groups in the case that $w$ is the identity element.

The geometry of conjugation in affine Coxeter groups

Abstract:We develop new and precise geometric descriptions of the conjugacy class $[x]$ and coconjugation set $\operatorname{C}(x,x') = \{ y \in \overline{W} \mid yxy^{-1} = x' \}$ for all elements $x,x'$ of any affine Coxeter group $\overline{W}$. The centralizer of $x$ in $\overline{W}$ is the special case $\operatorname{C}(x,x)$. The key structure in our description of the conjugacy class $[x]$ is the mod-set ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w) = (w-\operatorname{I})R^\vee$, where~$w$ is the finite part of $x$ and $R^\vee$ is the coroot lattice. The coconjugation set $\operatorname{C}(x,x')$ is then described by ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w')$ together with the fix-set of $w'$, where $w'$ is the finite part of $x'$. For any element $w$ of the associated finite Weyl group $W$, the mod-set of $w$ is contained in the classical move-set ${Mov}(w) = \operatorname{Im}(w - \operatorname{I})$. We prove that the rank of ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w)$ equals the dimension of ${Mov}(w)$, and then further investigate type-by-type the surprisingly subtle structure of the $\mathbb{Z}$-module ${Mod}_\overline{W}(w)$. As corollaries, we determine exactly when ${Mod}_{\overline{W}}(w) = {Mov}(w) \cap R^\vee$, in which case our closed-form descriptions of conjugacy classes and coconjugation sets are as simple as possible.

On non-conjugate Coxeter elements in well-generated reflection groups

Abstract:Given an irreducible well-generated complex reflection group W with Coxeter number h, we call a Coxeter element any regular element (in the sense of Springer) of order h in W; this is a slight extension of the most common notion of Coxeter element. We show that the class of these Coxeter elements forms a single orbit in W under the action of reflection automorphisms. For Coxeter and Shephard groups, this implies that an element c is a Coxeter element if and only if there exists a simple system S of reflections such that c is the product of the generators in S. We moreover deduce multiple further implications of this property. In particular, we obtain that all noncrossing partition lattices of W associated to different Coxeter elements are isomorphic. We also prove that there is a simply transitive action of the Galois group of the field of definition of W on the set of conjugacy classes of Coxeter elements. Finally, we extend several of these properties to Springer’s regular elements of arbitrary order.

Abstract:We investigate representations of Coxeter groups into $\mathrm{GL}(n,\mathbb{R})$ as geometric reflection groups which are convex cocompact in the projective space $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$. We characterize which Coxeter groups admit such representations, and we fully describe the corresponding spaces of convex cocompact representations as reflection groups, in terms of the associated Cartan matrices. The Coxeter groups that appear include all infinite, word hyperbolic Coxeter groups; for such groups the representations as reflection groups that we describe are exactly the projective Anosov ones. We also obtain a large class of nonhyperbolic Coxeter groups, thus providing many examples for the theory of nonhyperbolic convex cocompact subgroups in $\mathbb{P}(\mathbb{R}^n)$ developed in arXiv:1704.08711.

Abstract:For a Coxeter group (W,S), a permutation of the set S is called a Coxeter word and the group element represented by the product is called a Coxeter element. Moving the first letter to the end of the word is called a rotation and two Coxeter elements are rotation equivalent if their words can be transformed into each other through a sequence of rotations and legal commutations. We prove that Coxeter elements are conjugate if and only if they are rotation equivalent. This was known for some special cases but not for Coxeter groups in general.

Abstract:In recent papers we have refined a conjecture of Lehrer and Solomon expressing the characters of a finite Coxeter group $W$ afforded by the homogeneous components of its Orlik-Solomon algebra as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$. Our refined conjecture also relates the Orlik-Solomon characters above to the terms of a decomposition of the regular character of $W$ related to the descent algebra of $W$. A consequence of our conjecture is that both the regular character of $W$ and the character of the Orlik-Solomon algebra have parallel, graded decompositions as sums of characters induced from linear characters of centralizers of elements of $W$, one for each conjugacy class of elements of $W$. The refined conjecture has been proved for symmetric and dihedral groups. In this paper we develop algorithmic tools to prove the conjecture computationally for a given finite Coxeter group. We use these tools to verify the conjecture for all finite Coxeter groups of rank three and four, thus providing previously unknown decompositions of the regular characters and the Orlik-Solomon characters of these groups.

Abstract:The notion of a linear Coxeter system introduced by Vinberg generalizes the geometric representation of a Coxeter group. Our main theorem asserts that if $v$ is an element of the Tits cone of a linear Coxeter system and $\cW$ is the corresponding Coxeter group, then $\cW v \subeq v - C_v,$ where $C_v$ is the convex cone generated by the coroots $\check \alpha$, for which $\alpha(v) > 0$. This implies that the convex hull of $\cW v$ is completely determined by the image of $v$ under the reflections in $\cW$. We also apply an analogous result for convex hulls of $\cW$-orbits in the dual space, although this action need not correspond to a linear Coxeter system. Motivated by the applications in representation theory, we further extend these results to Weyl group orbits of locally finite and locally affine root systems. In the locally affine case, we also derive some applications on minimizing linear functionals on Weyl group orbits.

Abstract:We prove that even Coxeter groups, whose Coxeter diagrams contain no (4,4,2) triangles, are conjugacy separable. In particular, this applies to all right-angled Coxeter groups or word hyperbolic even Coxeter groups. For an arbitrary Coxeter group W, we also study the relationship between Coxeter generating sets that give rise to the same collection of parabolic subgroups. As an application we show that if an automorphism of W preserves the conjugacy class of every sufficiently short element then it is inner. We then derive consequences for the outer automorphism groups of Coxeter groups.

Abstract:In 2011, Barot and Marsh provided an explicit construction of presentation of a finite Weyl group $W$ by any quiver mutation-equivalent to an orientation of a Dynkin diagram with Weyl group $W$. The construction was extended by the authors of the present paper to obtain presentations for all affine Coxeter groups, as well as to construct groups from triangulations of unpunctured surfaces and orbifolds, where the groups are invariant under change of triangulation and thus are presented as quotients of numerous distinct Coxeter groups. We extend the construction to include most punctured surfaces and orbifolds, providing a new invariant for almost all marked surfaces.

Abstract:When W is a finite reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. A formula (for which the only known proofs are case-by-case) expresses the number of multichains of a given length in NCP_W as a generalised Fuss-Catalan number, depending on the invariant degrees of W. We describe how to understand some specifications of this formula in a case-free way, using an interpretation of the chains of NCP_W as fibers of a Lyashko-Looijenga covering (LL), constructed from the geometry of the discriminant hypersurface of W. We study algebraically the map LL, describing the factorisations of its discriminant and its Jacobian. As byproducts, we generalise a formula stated by K. Saito for real reflection groups, and we deduce new enumeration formulas for certain factorisations of a Coxeter element of W.

Abstract:A solution of the isomorphism problem is presented for the class of Coxeter groups W that have a finite set of Coxeter generators S such that the underlying graph of the presentation diagram of the system (W,S) has the property that every cycle of length at least four has a cord. As an application, we construct counterexamples to two main conjectures concerning the isomorphism problem for Coxeter groups.

Generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations for Coxeter-Toda systems on simple Lie groups

Abstract:We derive the cluster structure on the conjugation quotient Coxeter double Bruhat cells of a simple Lie group from that on the double Bruhat cells of the corresponding adjoint Lie group given by Fock and Goncharov using the notion of amalgamation given by Fock and Goncharov, and Williams, thereby generalizing the construction developed by Gekhtman \emph{et al}. We will then use this cluster structure on the conjugation quotient Coxeter double Bruhat cells to construct generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations between two Coxeter-Toda systems on simple Lie groups in terms of cluster mutations, thereby generalizing the construction developed by Gekhtman \emph{et al}. We show that these generalized Bäcklund-Darboux transformations preserve Hamiltonian flows generated by the restriction of the trace function of any representation of the simple Lie group, from which we deduce that the family of Coxeter-Toda systems on a simple Lie group forms a single cluster integrable system. Finally, we also develop network formulations of the Coxeter-Toda Hamiltonians for the classical Lie groups, and use these network formulations to obtain combinatorial formulas for these Coxeter-Toda Hamiltonians.

Abstract:We consider the class of those Coxeter groups for which removing from the Cayley graph any tubular neighbourhood of any wall leaves exactly two connected components. We call these Coxeter groups bipolar. They include both the virtually Poincare duality Coxeter groups and the infinite irreducible 2-spherical ones. We show in a geometric way that a bipolar Coxeter group admits a unique conjugacy class of Coxeter generating sets. Moreover, we provide a characterisation of bipolar Coxeter groups in terms of the associated Coxeter diagram.

Abstract:This paper presents a natural generalisation of Saxl conjecture from a Lie-theoretical perspective, which is verified for the exceptional types. For classical types, progress is made using spin representations, revealing connections to certain tensor product decomposition problems in symmetric groups. We provide an alternative uniform description of the cuspidal family (in the sense of Lusztig) through spin representations, offering an equivalent conjecture formulation. Additionally, we generalise Saxl conjecture to finite Coxeter groups and prove it for the non-crystallographic cases.

Abstract:Let $G$ be a connected, reductive group over a non-archimedean local field $F$. Let $\breve F$ be the completion of the maximal unramified extension of $F$ contained in a separable closure $F_s$. In this article, we construct a Tits group of the affine Weyl group of $G(F)$ when the derived subgroup of $G_{\breve F}$ does not contain a simple factor of unitary type. If $G$ is a quasi-split ramified odd unitary group, we show that there always exist representatives in $G(F)$ of affine simple reflections that satisfy Coxeter relations (which is weaker than asking for the existence of a Tits group). If $G = U_{2r}, r \geq 3,$ is a quasi-split ramified even unitary group, we show that there don't even exist representatives in $G(F)$ of the affine simple reflections that satisfy Coxeter relations.

Abstract:Small Coxeter groups are precisely the ones for which the Tits representation is integral, which makes the study of their congruence subgroups relevant. The symmetric group $S_n$ has three natural extensions, namely, the braid group $B_n$, the twin group $T_n$ and the triplet group $L_n$. The latter two groups are small Coxeter groups, and play the role of braid groups under the Alexander-Markov correspondence for appropriate knot theories, with their pure subgroups admitting suitable hyperplane arrangements as Eilenberg-MacLane spaces. In this paper, we prove that the congruence subgroup property fails for infinite small Coxeter groups which are not virtually abelian. As an application, we deduce that the congruence subgroup property fails for both $T_n$ and $L_n$ when $n \ge 4$. We also determine subquotients of principal congruence subgroups of $T_n$, and identify the pure twin group $PT_n$ and the pure triplet group $PL_n$ with suitable principal congruence subgroups. Further, we investigate crystallographic quotients of these two families of small Coxeter groups, and prove that $T_n /PT_n^{'}$, $T_n/T_n^{''}$ and $L_n /PL_n^{'}$ are crystallographic groups. We also determine crystallographic dimensions of these groups and identify the holonomy representation of $T_n/T_n^{''}$.
