Abstract:We show that Lusztig's $a$-function of a Coxeter group is bounded if the Coxeter group has a complete graph (i.e. any two vertices are joined) and the cardinalities of finite parabolic subgroups of the Coxeter group have a common upper bound.

Abstract:Kazhdan and Lusztig introduce the $W$-graphs to describe the cells and molecules corresponding to the Coxeter groups. Building on this foundation, Lusztig defines the a-funtion to classify the cells, as well as the molecules. Marberg then generalizes Kazhdan and Lusztig's $W$-graphs, using fixed-point-free involutions as their indices. The molecules of the two new $S_n$-graphs are then classified via two correspondence similar to RSK correspondence by Marberg and me. In this paper, we define an analogue of the Lusztig a-function and finish the classification of cells by proving that every molecule in the $S_n$-graphs is indeed a cell.

Abstract:A Coxeter group is said to be \emph{$\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite} if it has finitely many elements of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in the sense of Lusztig. In this paper, we give explicit combinatorial descriptions of the left, right, and two-sided Kazhdan--Lusztig cells of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in an irreducible $\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite Coxeter group. In particular, we introduce elements we call \emph{stubs} to parameterize the one-sided cells and we characterize the one-sided cells via both star operations and weak Bruhat orders. We also compute the cardinalities of all the one-sided and two-sided cells.

Abstract:We construct a morphism from the cactus group associated with a Coxeter group to the group of invertible elements of Lusztig's asymptotic algebra. This relates to the cactus group action on elements of Coxeter groups defined by Losev and Bonnafé and we propose a conjecture on how to fully recover those actions.

Abstract:When W is a finite reflection group, the noncrossing partition lattice NCP_W of type W is a rich combinatorial object, extending the notion of noncrossing partitions of an n-gon. A formula (for which the only known proofs are case-by-case) expresses the number of multichains of a given length in NCP_W as a generalised Fuss-Catalan number, depending on the invariant degrees of W. We describe how to understand some specifications of this formula in a case-free way, using an interpretation of the chains of NCP_W as fibers of a Lyashko-Looijenga covering (LL), constructed from the geometry of the discriminant hypersurface of W. We study algebraically the map LL, describing the factorisations of its discriminant and its Jacobian. As byproducts, we generalise a formula stated by K. Saito for real reflection groups, and we deduce new enumeration formulas for certain factorisations of a Coxeter element of W.

Abstract:For Coxeter groups with sufficiently large braid relations, we prove that the sequence of powers of a Coxeter element has unbounded reflection length. We establish a connection between the reflection length functions on arbitrary Coxeter groups and the reflection length functions on universal Coxeter groups of the same rank through the solution to the word problem for Coxeter groups. For Coxeter groups corresponding to a Coxeter matrix with the same entry everywhere except the diagonal, upper bounds for the reflection length of the powers of Coxeter elements are established.

Abstract:We prove that the combinatorial concept of a special matching can be used to compute the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials of doubly laced Coxeter groups and of dihedral Coxeter groups. In particular, for this class of groups which includes all Weyl groups, our results generalize to the parabolic setting the main results in [Advances in Math. {202} (2006), 555-601]. As a consequence, the parabolic Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomial indexed by $u$ and $v$ depends only on the poset structure of the Bruhat interval from the identity element to $v$ and on which elements of that interval are minimal coset representatives.

Abstract:The Mallows distribution is a non-uniform distribution, first introduced over permutations to study non-ranked data, in which permutations are weighted according to their length. It can be generalized to any Coxeter group, and we study the distribution of $\text{des}(w) + \text{des}(w^{-1})$ where $w$ is a Mallows distributed element of a finite irreducible Coxeter group. We show that the asymptotic behavior of this statistic is Guassian. The proof uses a size-bias coupling with Stein's method.

Abstract:In a seminal work, Bessis gave a geometric interpretation of the noncrossing lattice $NC(W)$ associated to a well-generated complex reflection group $W$. Chief component of this was the trivialization theorem, a fundamental correspondence between families of chains of $NC(W)$ and the fibers of a finite quasi-homogeneous morphism, the $LL$ map. We consider a variant of the $LL$ map, prescribed by the trivialization theorem, and apply it to the study of finer enumerative and structural properties of $NC(W)$. In particular, we extend work of Bessis and Ripoll and enumerate the so-called "primitive factorizations" of the Coxeter element $c$. That is, length additive factorizations of the form $c=w\cdot t_1\cdots t_k$, where $w$ belongs to a given conjugacy class and the $t_i$'s are reflections.

Lattice envelopes of right-angled Artin groups

Abstract:Let $\Gamma$ be a finite simplicial graph with at least two vertices, and let $G(\Gamma)$ be the associated right-angled Artin group. We describe a locally compact group $\mathcal U$ containing $G(\Gamma)$ as a cocompact lattice. If $\Gamma$ is not a join (i.e. the complement graph is connected), the group $\mathcal U$ is non-discrete, almost simple, but not virtually simple: it has a smallest normal subgroup $\mathcal U^+$ which is an open simple subgroup, and the quotient $\mathcal U/\mathcal U^+$ is isomorphic to the right-angled Coxeter group $W(\Gamma)$. Under suitable assumptions on $\Gamma$, we rely on work by Bader-Furman-Sauer and Huang-Kleiner to show that $\mathcal U \rtimes \mathrm{Aut}(\Gamma)$ is the universal lattice envelope of $G(\Gamma)$: for every lattice envelope $H$ of $G(\Gamma)$, there is a continuous proper homomorphism $H \to \mathcal U \rtimes \mathrm{Aut}(\Gamma)$. In particular, no lattice envelope of $G(\Gamma)$ is virtually simple. We also show that no locally compact group quasi-isometric to $G(\Gamma)$ is virtually simple. This contrasts with the case of free groups. The group $\mathcal U$ is a universal automorphism group of the Davis building of $G(\Gamma)$, with prescribed local actions. As an application, we describe the algebraic structure of the full automorphism group of the Cayley graph of $G(\Gamma)$ with respect to its standard generating set.

Abstract:In this paper, we relate $L(1,\pi,\mathrm{Ad}^\circ)$ to the congruence ideals for cohomological cuspidal automorphic representations $\pi$ of $\mathrm{GL}_n$ over any number field. We then use this result to deduce relationships between the congruences of automorphic forms and adjoint $L$-functions. For CM fields, we apply the result to obtain a lower bound on the cardinality of certain Selmer groups in terms of $L(1,\pi,\mathrm{Ad}^\circ)$.

Abstract:In any Coxeter group, the conjugates of elements in the standard minimal generating set are called reflections, and the minimal number of reflections needed to factor a particular element is called its reflection length. In this article we prove that the reflection length function on an affine Coxeter group has a uniform upper bound. More precisely, we prove that the reflection length function on an affine Coxeter group that naturally acts faithfully and cocompactly on ℝn is bounded above by 2n, and we also show that this bound is optimal. Conjecturally, spherical and affine Coxeter groups are the only Coxeter groups with a uniform bound on reflection length.

Abstract:Parabolic subgroups $W_I$ of Coxeter systems $(W,S)$, as well as their ordinary and double quotients $W / W_I$ and $W_I \backslash W / W_J$, appear in many contexts in combinatorics and Lie theory, including the geometry and topology of generalized flag varieties and the symmetry groups of regular polytopes. The set of ordinary cosets $w W_I$, for $I \subseteq S$, forms the Coxeter complex of $W$, and is well-studied. In this article we look at a less studied object: the set of all double cosets $W_I w W_J$ for $I, J \subseteq S$. Double coset are not uniquely presented by triples $(I,w,J)$. We describe what we call the lex-minimal presentation, and prove that there exists a unique such object for each double coset. Lex-minimal presentations are then used to enumerate double cosets via a finite automaton depending on the Coxeter graph for $(W,S)$. As an example, we present a formula for the number of parabolic double cosets with a fixed minimal element when $W$ is the symmetric group $S_n$ (in this case, parabolic subgroups are also known as Young subgroups). Our formula is almost always linear time computable in $n$, and we show how it can be generalized to any Coxeter group with little additional work. We spell out formulas for all finite and affine Weyl groups in the case that $w$ is the identity element.

Automorphisms of odd Coxeter groups

Abstract:An odd Coxeter group $W$ is one which admits a Coxeter system $(W,S)$ for which all the exponents $m_{ij}$ are either odd or infinity. The paper investigates the family of odd Coxeter groups whose associated labeled graphs $\mathcal{V}_{(W,S)}$ are trees. It is known that two Coxeter groups in this family are isomorphic if and only if they admit Coxeter systems having the same rank and the same multiset of finite exponents. In particular, each group in this family is isomorphic to a group that admits a Coxeter system whose associated labeled graph is a star shaped tree. We give the complete description of the automorphism group of this group, and derive a sufficient condition for the splitting of the automorphism group as a semi-direct product of the inner and the outer automorphism groups. As applications, we prove that Coxeter groups in this family satisfy the $R_\infty$-property and are (co)-Hopfian. We compare structural properties, automorphism groups, $\R_\infty$-property and (co)-Hopfianity of a special odd Coxeter group whose only finite exponent is three with the braid group and the twin group.
