Abstract:We construct a morphism from the cactus group associated with a Coxeter group to the group of invertible elements of Lusztig's asymptotic algebra. This relates to the cactus group action on elements of Coxeter groups defined by Losev and Bonnafé and we propose a conjecture on how to fully recover those actions.

Abstract:Cactus groups are currently attracting considerable interest from diverse mathematical communities. This work explores their relations to right-angled Coxeter groups and, in particular, twin groups and Mostovoy's Gauss diagram groups , which are better understood. Concretely, we construct an injective group 1-cocycle from to and show that (and its k -leaf generalizations) inject into . As a corollary, we solve the word problem for cactus groups, determine their torsion (which is only even) and center (which is trivial), and answer the same questions for pure cactus groups, . In addition, we yield a 1-relator presentation of the first non-abelian pure cactus group . Our tools come mainly from combinatorial group theory.

On the Cuspidal Cohomology of Arithmetic Groups

Abstract:It is the main objective of this paper to show a vanishing result for cuspidal cohomology of arithmetic groups in classical groups~$G$ defined over some number field~$k$.Our approach relies on the fact that cuspidal automorphic forms are nonsingular in the sense of Howe. This result puts a strong constraint on the (archimedean components of) irreducible cuspidal automorphic representations of $G$that can possibly contribute to the cuspidal cohomology. Combining this with the classification of Vogan-Zuckerman of unitary representations with nonzero cohomologyprovides a constant $r_0(G/k)$, only depending on $G/k$, below which the cuspidal cohomology vanishes. We will give a formula for this constant for each classical group of type (I) in the classification scheme due to Weil. We conclude with making this result explicit for some split classical groups over a totally real algebraic number field.

Abstract:Let $\mathfrak{g}$ be a semisimple simply-laced Lie algebra of finite type. Let $\mathcal{C}$ be an abelian categorical representation of the quantum group $U_q(\mathfrak{g})$ categorifying an integrable representation $V$. The Artin braid group $B$ of $\mathfrak{g}$ acts on $D^b(\mathcal{C})$ by Rickard complexes, providing a triangulated equivalence $\Theta_{w_0}:D^b(\mathcal{C}_\mu) \to D^b(\mathcal{C}_{w_0(\mu)})$, where $\mu$ is a weight of $V$ and $\Theta_{w_0}$ is a positive lift of the longest element of the Weyl group. We prove that this equivalence is t-exact up to shift when $V$ is isotypic, generalising a fundamental result of Chuang and Rouquier in the case $\mathfrak{g}=\mathfrak{sl}_2$. For general $V$, we prove that $\Theta_{w_0}$ is a perverse equivalence with respect to a Jordan-Hölder filtration of $\mathcal{C}$. Using these results we construct, from the action of $B$ on $V$, an action of the cactus group on the crystal of $V$. This recovers the cactus group action on $V$ defined via generalised Schützenberger involutions, and provides a new connection between categorical representation theory and crystal bases. We also use these results to give new proofs of theorems of Berenstein-Zelevinsky, Rhoades, and Stembridge regarding the action of symmetric group on the Kazhdan-Lusztig basis of its Specht modules.

Abstract:Cactus groups are traditionally defined based on symmetric groups, and pure cactus groups are particular subgroups of cactus groups. Mostovoy [6] showed that pure cactus groups embed into right-angled Coxeter groups. We generalize this result to cactus groups associated with arbitrary finite Coxeter groups and we investigate some representations of generalized cactus groups and deduce the linearity of generalized cactus groups.

Abstract:We define a virtual cactus group and show that the cactus group action on Littelmann paths is compatible with the virtualization map defined by Pan-Scrimshaw. To show this we use the combinatorics of Dynkin diagram foldings. Our definition generalizes the group with the same name recently defined for the symplectic Lie algebra in recent joint work with Azenhas and Tarighat-Feller.

Abstract:This article deals with the study of cactus groups from a combinatorial point of view. These groups have been gaining prominence lately in various domains of mathematics, amongst which are their relations with well-known groups such as braid groups, diagram groups, to name a few. We compute a minimal presentation for cactus groups in terms of generators and non-redundant relations. We also construct homomorphisms of these groups onto certain finite groups, which leads to results about finite quotients of cactus groups. More precisely, we prove that all (infinite) dihedral groups appear as quotients of cactus groups. We also investigate the lower central series and its consecutive quotients. While there are already known established similarities with braid groups, we deduce a considerable disparity between the two groups.

The Orbits of the Action of the Cactus Group on Arc Diagrams

Abstract:The cactus group $J_n$ is the $S_n$-equivariant fundamental group of the real locus of the Deligne-Mumford moduli space of stable rational curves with marked points. This group plays the role of the braid group for the monoidal category of Kashiwara crystals attached to a simple Lie algebra. Following Frenkel, Kirillov and Varchenko, one can identify the multiplicity set in a tensor product of $\mathfrak{sl}_2$-crystals with the set of arc diagrams on a disc, thus allowing a much simpler description of the corresponding $J_n$-action. We address the problem of classifying the orbits of this cactus group action. Namely, we describe some invariants of this action and show that in some (fairly general) classes of examples there are no other invariants. Furthermore, we describe some additional relations, including the braid relation, that this action places on the generators of $J_n$.

Abstract:Cactus doodles are combinatorial/geometric objects that are related to cactus groups in the same way as knots are related to braids. We define them in terms of local moves on plane curves, show that they can be obtained from elements of the cactus group by a "closing" procedure and establish some of their basic properties.

Abstract:A Coxeter group is said to be \emph{$\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite} if it has finitely many elements of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in the sense of Lusztig. In this paper, we give explicit combinatorial descriptions of the left, right, and two-sided Kazhdan--Lusztig cells of $\mathbf{a}$-value 2 in an irreducible $\mathbf{a}(2)$-finite Coxeter group. In particular, we introduce elements we call \emph{stubs} to parameterize the one-sided cells and we characterize the one-sided cells via both star operations and weak Bruhat orders. We also compute the cardinalities of all the one-sided and two-sided cells.

The center of the asymptotic Hecke category and unipotent character sheaves

Abstract:In 2015, Lusztig [Bull. Inst. Math. Acad. Sin. (N.S.)10(2015), no.1, 1-72] showed that for a connected reductive group over an algebraic closure of a finite field the associated (geometric) Hecke category admits a truncation in a two-sided Kazhdan--Lusztig cell, making it a categorification of the asymptotic algebra (J-ring), and that the categorical center of this "asymptotic Hecke category" is equivalent to the category of unipotent character sheaves supported in the cell. Subsequently, Lusztig noted that an asymptotic Hecke category can be constructed for any finite Coxeter group using Soergel bimodules. Lusztig conjectured that the centers of these categories are modular tensor categories (which was then proven by Elias and Williamson) and that for non-crystallographic finite Coxeter groups the S-matrices coincide with the Fourier matrices that were constructed in the 1990s by Lusztig, Malle, and Broué--Malle. If the conjecture is true, the centers may be considered as categories of "unipotent character sheaves" for non-crystallographic finite Coxeter groups. In this paper, we show that the conjecture is true for dihedral groups and for some (we cannot resolve all) cells of H3 and H4. The key ingredient is the method of H-reduction and the identification of the (reduced) asymptotic Hecke category with known categories whose center is already known as well. We conclude by studying the asymptotic Hecke category and its center for some infinite Coxeter groups with a finite cell.

Abstract:Kazhdan and Lusztig introduce the $W$-graphs to describe the cells and molecules corresponding to the Coxeter groups. Building on this foundation, Lusztig defines the a-funtion to classify the cells, as well as the molecules. Marberg then generalizes Kazhdan and Lusztig's $W$-graphs, using fixed-point-free involutions as their indices. The molecules of the two new $S_n$-graphs are then classified via two correspondence similar to RSK correspondence by Marberg and me. In this paper, we define an analogue of the Lusztig a-function and finish the classification of cells by proving that every molecule in the $S_n$-graphs is indeed a cell.

Abstract:The cactus group acts combinatorially on crystals via partial Schützenberger involutions. This action has been studied extensively in type $A$ and described via Bender-Knuth involutions. We prove an analogous result for the family of crystals $B(n\varpi_1)$ in type $D$. Our main tools are combinatorial toggles acting on reverse plane partitions of height $n$. As a corollary, we show that the length one and two subdiagram elements generate the full cactus action, addressing conjectures of Dranowski, the second author, Kamnitzer, and Morton-Ferguson.

Abstract:In a series of previous papers, we studied sortable elements in finite Coxeter groups, and the related Cambrian fans. We applied sortable elements and Cambrian fans to the study of cluster algebras of finite type and the noncrossing partitions associated to Artin groups of finite type. In this paper, as the first step towards expanding these applications beyond finite type, we study sortable elements in a general Coxeter group WW. We supply uniform arguments which transform all previous finite-type proofs into uniform proofs (rather than type by type proofs), generalize many of the finite-type results and prove new and more refined results. The key tools in our proofs include a skew-symmetric form related to (a generalization of) the Euler form of quiver theory and the projection π↓cpi _downarrow ^c mapping each element of WW to the unique maximal cc-sortable element below it in the weak order. The fibers of π↓cpi _downarrow ^c essentially define the cc-Cambrian fan. The most fundamental results are, first, a precise statement of how sortable elements transform under (BGP) reflection functors and second, a precise description of the fibers of π↓cpi _downarrow ^c. These fundamental results and others lead to further results on the lattice theory and geometry of Cambrian (semi)lattices and Cambrian fans.

Abstract:The three main objects in noncrossing Catalan combinatorics associated to a finite Coxeter system are noncrossing partitions, clusters, and sortable elements. The first two of these have known Fuss-Catalan generalizations. We provide new viewpoints for both and introduce the missing generalization of sortable elements by lifting the theory from the Coxeter system to the associated positive Artin monoid. We show how this new perspective ties together all three generalizations, providing a uniform framework for noncrossing Fuss-Catalan combinatorics. Having developed the combinatorial theory, we provide an interpretation of our generalizations in the language of the representation theory of hereditary Artin algebras.

Abstract:We reprove the surjectivity statement of Braverman-Kazhdan's spectral description of Lusztig's asymptotic Hecke algebra $J$ in the context of $p$-adic groups. The proof is based on Bezrukavnikov-Ostrik's description of $J$ in terms of equivariant $K$-theory. As a porism, we prove that the action of $J$ extends from the non-strictly positive unramified characters to the complement of a finite union of divisors, and that the trace pairing between the Ciubotaru-He rigid cocentre of an affine Hecke algebra with equal parameters and the rigid quotient of its Grothendieck group is perfect whenever the parameter $q$ is not a root of the Poincaré polynomial of the finite Weyl group. Without recourse to $K$-theory, we prove a weak version of Xi's description of $J$ in type $A$. As an application of relationship between $J$ and the rigid cocentre, we prove that if the formal degree of a unipotent discrete series representation of a connected reductive $p$-adic group $G$ with a split inner form has denominator dividing the Poincaré polynomial of the Weyl group of $G$. Additionally, we give formulas for $t_w$ in terms of inverse and spherical Kazhdan-Lusztig polynomials for $w$ in the lowest cell.
