Abstract:We present a theoretical study of strong laser-atom interactions, when the laser field parameters are subjected to random processes. The atom is modelled by a two-level and three-level systems, while the statistical fluctuations of the laser field are described by a pre-Gaussian model.

Abstract:In LM, we proved a family version of the famous Witten rigidity theorems and several family vanishing theorems for elliptic genera. In this paper, we gerenalize our theorems LM in two directions. First we establish a family rigidity theorem for the Dirac operator on loop space twisted by general positive energy loop group representations. Second we prove a family rigidity theorem for spin^c-manifolds. Several vanishing theorems on both cases are also obtained.

Abstract:In the first part of this paper, we construct mod 2 elliptic genera on manifolds of dimensions 8k+1, 8k+2 by mod 2 index formulas of Dirac operators. They are given by mod 2 modular forms or mod 2 automorphic functions. We also obtain an integral formula for the mod 2 index of the Dirac operator. As a by-product we find topological obstructions to group actions. In the second part, we construct higher elliptic genera and prove some of their rigidity properties under group actions. In the third part we write down characteristic series for all Witten genera by Jacobi theta-functions. The modular property and transformation formulas of elliptic genera then follow easily. We shall also prove that Krichever's genera, which come from integrable systems, can be written as indices of twisted Dirac operators forSU-manifolds. Some general discussions about elliptic genera are given.

Introduction.Let M, B be two compact smooth manifolds, and TT : M -» B be a smooth fibration with compact fibre X.Let TX be the relative tangent bundle.Assume that a compact Lie group G acts fiberwise on M, that is, the action preserves each fiber of TT.Let P be a family of G-equivariant elliptic operators along the fiber X.Then the family index of P, Ind(P), is a well-defined element in K(B) (cf.[AS]) and is a virtual G-representation (cf.[LiuMal]).We denote by (Ind(P)) G £ K(B) the G-invariant part of Ind(P).A family of elliptic operator P is said to be rigid on the equivariant Chern character level with respect to this G-action, if the equivariant Chern character ch 5 (Ind(P)) G H*(B) is independent of g G G. Abstract:Elliptic genus was derived as the partition function in quantum field theory [26]. Mathematically it is the beautiful combination of topology of manifolds, index theory and modular forms (cf. [15], [10]). Elliptic genus for smooth manifolds has been well-studied. Recently, Borisov and Libgober ([3], [4]) proposed some definitions of elliptic genus for certain singular spaces, especially for complex orbifolds which is a global quotient M/G, here the finite group G acts holomorphically on complex variety M . Similar definitions have been introduced by string theorists in the 80s, in the study of orbifold string theory. One of their guiding principles is the modular invariance. More recently orbifold string theory has attracted the attention of geometers and topologists. For example Chen and Ruan (cf. [7], [22]) have defined orbifold cohomology and orbifold quantum cohomology groups. One of most important properties for elliptic genus is its rigidity property under compact Lie group action. For smooth manifolds, the rigidity and its generalizations have been well studied. Since orbifold elliptic genus is the partition function of orbifold string theory, it is natural to expect the rigidity property for orbifold elliptic genus. Although the global quotients from a very important class of orbifolds, many interesting orbifolds are not global quotients. For example, most of the Calabi-Yau hypersurfaces of weighted projective spaces are not global quotients. In this paper we define elliptic genus for general orbifolds which generalizes the definition of Borisov and Libgober, and prove their rigidity property. We actually introduce the more general elliptic genus involving twisted bundles and proved its rigidity. The idea of considering the weights in the definition of orbifold elliptic genus comes from [4] and our proof of the K-theory version of Witten rigidity theorems [21, §4]. The proof of the rigidity is again a combination of modular invariance and the index theory. Only more complicated combinatorics are involved in the definition and the proof. This paper is organized as follows: In Sections 1 and 2 we review the equivariant index theorem on orbifolds. We define orbifold elliptic genus and prove its rigidity for almost complex orbifolds in Section 3. Finally in Section 4 we introduce orbifold elliptic genus for spin orbifolds, and will study its rigidity property on a later occasion. Abstract:Using the Liu's method, we prove a new Witten rigidity theorem of elliptic genus of twisted Dirac operators in even dimensional spin manifolds under the circle action. Combined with the Han-Yu's method, we prove the Witten rigidity theorems of elliptic genus of twisted Toplitz operators of odd-dimensional spin manifolds under the circle action. Moreover, we have obtained several similar Witten rigidity theorems of elliptic genus.

We obtain our results by combining the modular method, modular transgression and some careful analysis of odd Chern classes for cocycles in odd K-theory. Abstract:Motivated by the Shafarevich conjecture, we introduce the notions of very general rigidity and generic rigidity to characterize the distribution of non-rigid families in the corresponding moduli space. Our main results focus on moduli spaces of polarized manifolds where the infinitesimal Torelli theorem holds. We show that if the derived Mumford-Tate group of the associated polarized $\mathbb{Z}$-variation of Hodge structures is absolutely simple, then the moduli space $\mathcal{M}$ has the very general rigidity property, meaning all non-rigid families are contained within a countable union of closed strict irreducible subschemes of $\mathcal{M}$. If, in addition, the associated Mumford-Tate domain is not a bounded symmetric domain of rank greater than one, then the moduli space exhibits a stronger rigidity property, generic rigidity, where the countable union in the definition of very general rigidity is replaced by a finite union. As a corollary of the generic rigidity, we establish a geometric version of the Bombieri-Lang-type finiteness result. Many examples of moduli spaces, such as those of projective hypersurfaces of certain degrees, satisfy the conditions of our main theorems. We also explore the relationship between the bases of maximally non-rigid families and special subvarieties in the moduli spaces of Calabi-Yau manifolds, inspired by a detailed analysis of Viehweg-Zuo's example of maximally non-rigid families of Calabi-Yau quintics in $\mathbb{P}^4$.
