Abstract:The effect of annealing treatment on permeability and magneto-impedance in Fe73Cu1Nb3.5Si14B8.5 amorphous ribbons was investigated systematically. The magneto-impedance profiles were measured as a function of the external magnetic field at various frequencies up to 10MHz. The real and imaginary parts of the complex permeability were measured in a frequency range of 0.1–10MHz under different applied ac field. The results indicated that the longitudinal permeability resulting from domain wall motion decreased drastically after annealing treatment, but the permeability resulting from the rotational magnetization increased with increasing annealing temperature up to 540°C and then decreased at higher temperatures. The largest magneto-impedance effect was observed in the nanocrystalline alloy. The correlation between the soft magnetic properties and the magnitude and sensitivity of the GMI effect was discussed.

Abstract:La 0.7 Sr 0.3 MnO 3 (LSMO) films were prepared by the chemical solution deposition method with an external magnetic-field ( H ext =5 kOe) annealing process. Structural and magnetic properties were systematically investigated. X-ray diffraction results show that both LSMO films are single-phase. The results of field-emission scanning electronic microscopy show that the mean grain size of the film annealed under H ext =5 kOe are about 2.5 times larger than that of the annealed film under H ext =0 kOe. The enhanced magnetic properties are explained reasonably by the magnetic-field annealing.
Anisotropic magnetothermoelectric power of ferromagnetic thin films

Abstract:We compare the behavior of the magnetothermoelectric power (MTEP)in metallic ferromagnetic thin films of Ni80Fe20 (Permalloy; Py), Co and CrO2 at temperatures in the range of 100 K to 400 K. In 25 nm thick Py films and 50 nm thick Co films both the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and MTEP show a relative change in resistance and thermoelectric power (TEP) of the order of 0.2% when the magnetic field is reversed, and in both cases there is no significant change in AMR or MTEP any more after the saturation field has been reached. Surprisingly, both Py and Co films have opposite MTEP behavior although both have the same sign for AMR and TEP. The data on 100 nm films of fully spin-polarized CrO2, grown both on TiO2 and on sapphire, show a different picture. The MTEP behavior at low fields shows peaks similar to the AMR in these films, with variations up to 1%. With increasing field both the MR and the MTEP variations keeps growing, with MTEP showing relative changes of 1.5% with the thermal gradient along the b-axis and even 20% with the gradient along the c-axis, with an intermediate value of 3% for the film on sapphire. It appears that the low-field effects are due to magnetic domain switching, while the high-field effects are intrinsic to the electronic structure of CrO2.

Abstract:In this paper, the transformation in easy-axis anisotropy and magnetostriction in Co-rich amorphous microwires by dc current annealing has been studied with the aim to realize stress-sensitive magnetization process and magnetoimpedance (MI). With increasing the annealing current intensity Ian, the anisotropy and magnetostriction undergo non-monotonic changes owing to different processes occurring during annealing: structural relaxation, atomic pair ordering, atomic rearrangements, internal stress relief and phase transformation at the crystallization onset. At moderate values of Ian the induced anisotropy sets a near-circumferential easy direction whilst the magnetostriction parameter increases from a very low negative value in the as-cast state to positive values. At optimal combination of the induced anisotropy and positive magnetostriction a highly stress-sensitive MI behavior is observed which is important for stress-sensory applications. At these conditions, the impedance vs. magnetic field plots may change shape in the presence of tensile stress which at zero field is accompanied by a huge impedance change in the range of 70–162% per 100 MPa.

Abstract:Magnetization orientation in thin films is intricately influenced by multiple anisotropy components, with the dominant anisotropy serving as a key determinant. This complexity becomes particularly intriguing when considering thin films composed of subnanometer-scale heterogeneous amorphous structures. Our investigation builds upon this foundation, specifically focusing on the Fe-Ni-B-Nb alloy system, known for its moderate glass-forming ability and susceptibility to nanocrystallization. In this study, we present thickness- and temperature-driven spin-reorientation (SRT) transition, attributed to competing magnetic anisotropy energies in thin films featuring a heterogeneous amorphous structure. Thermogravimetric investigations unveiled a unique heterogeneous amorphous structure, a revelation unattainable through conventional structural analysis methods. The observed spontaneous perpendicular magnetization in amorphous films, as evidenced by transcritical hysteresis loops and magnetic stripe domains, is ascribed to the pronounced residual stress arising from the substantial magnetostriction of the alloy system. The temperature-driven SRT is correlated to the order-disorder magnetic transition of the heterogeneous amorphous phase, characterized by a Curie temperature of ~225 K. This transformative magnetic state of the heterogeneous amorphous matrix limits the exchange interaction among the densely distributed α-Fe nuclei regions, ultimately governing the dynamic magnetic responses with varying temperature. This work provides valuable insights into the dynamic magnetic orientation of thin films, especially those with heterogeneous amorphous structures, contributing to the broader understanding of the underlying mechanisms of magnetization reversals.

Abstract:The magnetic anisotropy of Ni thin films fabricated under different growth conditions have been studied by the ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) method. The FMR data have been fitted theoretically. The results show that the anisotropy is an orthorhombic anisotropy, and there exists an optimal rotary speed of the sample for a fixed deposition rate. Near the optimal speed, the anisotropy field along the in-plane easy axis exhibits a maximum, while the anisotropy held perpendicular to the film plane exhibits a minimum. Abstract:The magnetic and transport properties of two series of sputtered [Ni80Co20(L)/Fe(tFe)]N multilayers with different Fe layer thickness of tFe=0.1 and 2nm, respectively, and varying L were studied and compared. An enhanced anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) peak around L=10nm was observed for annealed films with tFe=0.1nm. The mechanism of AMR enhancement was discussed.

Abstract:We report a comprehensive study of annealing treatment modulation on the laser-induced ultrafast magnetic behaviors in antiferromagnetically exchange-coupled [Ni/Co](4)/Ru/[Co/Ni](3) multilayers with perpendicular magnetic anisotropy (PMA). Magnetic hysteresis loops indicate that the uniaxial PMA field H-keff decreases monotonously with the increase in annealing temperature T-a, but the variation of interlayer coupling field H-ex is rather complicated. Time-resolved magnetic-optical Kerr effect (MOKE) measurements demonstrate that the laser-excited demagnetization and precession process relies significantly on T-a. Upon laser impulsion, the MOKE signal immediately shows a nonchanging transient increase and decrease with H increasing for low T-a, but only the ultrafast decreasing behavior for high T-a. From the subsequent dynamic precession spectra, the optical and acoustic precession modes are identified. By fitting the field-dependent frequency curves via the deduced dispersion relations, both H-keff and H-ex are determined and their variation trends agree well with the results from the static magnetic measurement. Moreover, it is found that the critical field where the ultrafast signal decrease occurs is dependent on the co-effect of H-keff and H-ex, whereas the maximum field at which the optical mode precession disappears shares the same trend as H-ex. The magnetic damping of acoustic mode is seen to increase with T-a due to the increased inhomogeneities. Our findings provide a deep understanding of the magnetic properties in synthetic antiferromagnetic multilayers with high annealing temperatures, which will be helpful for designing advanced spintronic devices.

Abstract:Permalloy, despite being a widely utilized soft magnetic material, still calls for optimization in terms of magnetic softness and magnetostriction for its use in magnetoresistive sensor applications. Conventional annealing methods are often insufficient to locally achieve the desired properties for a narrow parameter range. In this study, we report a significant improvement of the magnetic softness and magnetostriction in a 30 nm Permalloy film after He$^+$ irradiation. Compared to the as-deposited state, the irradiation treatment reduces the induced anisotropy by a factor ten and the hard axis coercivity by a factor five. In addition, the effective magnetostriction of the film is significantly reduced by a factor ten - below $1\times10^{-7}$ - after irradiation. All the above mentioned effects can be attributed to the isotropic crystallite growth of the Ni-Fe alloy and to the intermixing at the magnetic layer interfaces under light ion irradiation. We support our findings with X-ray diffraction analysis of the textured Ni$_{81}$Fe$_{19}$ alloy. Importantly, the sizable magnetoresistance is preserved after the irradiation. Our results show that compared to traditional annealing methods, the use of He$^+$ irradiation leads to significant improvements in the magnetic softness and reduces strain cross sensitivity in Permalloy films required for 3D positioning and compass applications. These improvements, in combination with the local nature of the irradiation process make our finding valuable for the optimization of monolithic integrated sensors, where classic annealing methods cannot be applied due to complex interplay within the components in the device.

Abstract:We have investigated the magnetoresistance of Permalloy (Ni80Fe20) films with thicknesses ranging from a single monolayer to 12 nm, grown on Al2O3, MgO and SiO2 substrates. Growth and transport measurements were carried out under cryogenic conditions in UHV. Applying in-plane magnetic vector fields up to 100 mT, the magnetotransport properties are ascertained during growth. With increasing thickness the films exhibit a gradual transition from tunneling magnetoresistance to anisotropic magnetoresistance. This corresponds to the evolution of the film structure from separated small islands to a network of interconnected grains as well as the transition from superparamagnetic to ferromagnetic behavior of the film. Using an analysis based on a theoretical model of the island growth, we find that the observed evolution of the magnetoresistance in the tunneling regime originates from the changes in the island size distribution during growth. Depending on the substrate material, significant differences in the magnetoresistance response in the transition regime between tunneling magnetoresistance and anisotropic magnetoresistance were found. We attribute this to an increasingly pronounced island growth and slower percolation process of Permalloy when comparing growth on SiO2, MgO and Al2O3 substrates. The different growth characteristics result in a markedly earlier onset of both tunneling magnetoresistance and anisotropic magnetoresistance for SiO2. For Al2O3 in particular the growth mode results in a structure of the film containing two different contributions to the ferromagnetism which lead to two distinct coercive fields in the high thickness regime.

Abstract:In the present work, a detailed field dependence of the resistivity of Ni 75 Co 25 and Ni 40 Co 60 bulk alloys was measured at T = 3 K and 300 K up to high magnetic fields. The focus of the study was to determine the anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and to get a quantitative description of the field-induced resistivity change, the latter not yet being available for Ni-Co alloys. The AMR parameters were derived from the resistivity data in the magnetically saturated (monodomain) state by using the Kohler analysis. The values of the AMR ratio were found to be close to the relevant previous data both at low and high temperatures. Due to the measurement precision and careful data evaluation, our AMR data obtained on well-characterized samples can be considered as reference values for the bulk state of the investigated compositions. In addition, also the resistivity anisotropy splitting was determined. The experimentally found field dependence of the resistivity at both T = 3 K and 300 K was found to be at variance with the current theoretical descriptions both for the resistivity increase due to the ordinary magnetoresistance effect being significant at T = 3 K and for the resistivity decrease due to the magnon suppression process at T = 300 K, invoking for a refinement of theory in both cases.

Effect of annealing in unsaturated magnetic field on the magnetic properties of an amorphous alloy Fe77Ni1Si9B13

Abstract:The regularities of the influence on the magnetic properties of temperature and the strength of the longitudinal magnetic field, which is much less than the saturation field, during annealing of an amorphous soft magnetic alloy based on Fe were studied. The possibility of efficiency of such treatment in comparison with traditional annealing without a field is demonstrated. It is shown that the change in magnetic properties during annealing is not related to the crystallization processes of the amorphous alloy. Annealing in unsaturated field at a temperature of 410 °C showed the greatest efficiency in achieving the highest soft magnetic properties of the alloy (low coercive force H c = 3 A/m, high maximum and low-field permeability μ max = 101,000, μ 2 = 5019) among short-term treatments with a holding time of 10 min. The results obtained are discussed taking into account the processes of magnetic anisotropy induction and stress relaxation in the alloy.

Abstract:The induced uniaxial anisotropy field $H_{k}$ in very thin films sandwiched by Ta or Cu layers was investigated. The value of $H_{k}$ of the Ta/Cu/Ni79 Fe21/Cu/Ta film decreases as film thickness decreases below 20 nm, even after an annealing procedure in a magnetic field. This $H_{k}$reduction is similar to that of the Ta/Ni79 Fe21/Ta films, indicating that the $H_{k}$ reduction is independent of surface energy and/or crystal structure of seed layers. The value of film magnetostriction $\lambda _{p-p}$ of the Ta/NiFe/Ta films gradually increases as the thickness decreases, which is coincident with the reduction of $H_{k}$. However, the increase of the $\lambda _{p-p}$ values, by decreasing Ni concentration or annealing the films, resulted in conflicting $H_{k}$values. These results indicate that the $H_{k}$reduction in thin films is not simply caused by the magnetostrictive effect.

Application of an extended van der Pauw method to anisotropic magnetoresistance measurements of ferromagnetic films

Abstract:We demonstrate anisotropic resistivity measurements using the extended van der Pauw (vdP) method in ferromagnetic Ni80Fe20 (Py) films. We apply it to measure anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) and compare the results of the vdP method with the more conventional Hall-bar method along the hard and easy axis of the film and show that the vdP method gives more reliable AMR result. For instance, the AMR result along the hard and easy axis of the film are in close agreement. Further, we applied the vdP method to study AMR in a series of Py films with thicknesses ranging between 10-250 nm. The films were grown by sputtering deposition at an angle with respect to the substrate normal and with an in-situ magnetic field, both conditions assisting in the definition of in-plane uniaxial anisotropy. The microstructure of Py films was characterized using X-ray reflectivity, diffraction and polar mapping of (111) planes. We detected no off-normal texture and negligible surface roughness, which indicates that self-shadowing is not dominating in our growth. Yet the films have well defined uniaxial anisotropy. Abrupt changes in the average resistivity vs. film thickness were observed, which cannot be explained by the models accounting for the thickness and grain size but strongly correlate with the changes in (111) texture in the films. We compared our results with the literature and show that independent of growth method, substrate and deposition temperature, the AMR value presents a saturation behavior with thickness at about 100 nm.

Abstract:Amorphous Re–Fe–B (Re rare-earth) films are prepared on thermally oxidized Si substrates with Nb buffer layers by dc magnetron sputtering. We observed the evolution of magnetic domain structure in these films under the external magnetic field parallel to the film plane and discussed its origin. The magnetoelastic anisotropy and shape anisotropy can be adjusted by changing the deposition temperature and the thickness of the film. The results showed that the magnetic domain structure for a film with lower sputtering temperature (150°C) and thinner thickness (200nm) has changed significantly with the applied magnetic field and form stripe domains arranged along the direction of the field. However, for the film with higher sputtering temperature (300°C) and thicker thickness (600nm), magnetic domain structure is hardly varied with applied field. We suggest the evolution of magnetic domain structure is determined by the interplay of the magnetoelastic anisotropy and shape anisotropy energy, which will lead to the easy magnetization direction of amorphous Re–Fe–B films inclined to the normal direction instead of perpendicular to the film plane.
Influence of Annealing Temperatures on the Magnetostructural Transition and Magnetocaloric Effect of Ni40Co10Mn40Sn10 Powders

Abstract:The phase structure, the magnetostructural transition behavior and the associated magnetocaloric effect have been investigated in Ni40Co10Mn40Sn10 bulk and powders, mainly focusing on the effects of annealing temperatures ranging from 573 K to 773 K. A non-modulated martensitic structure was detected in the bulk and as-ground powders, but a seven-layered orthorhombic structure was observed after annealing. The magnetostructural transition in the bulk alloy from weak magnetic martensite to ferromagnetic austenite was also confirmed in the as-ground and annealed powders. Compared with the bulk alloy, the transition temperatures of the as-ground powders decreased markedly; the transition temperature hysteresis broadened, and the magnetization change across the transition was severely reduced. With increasing annealing temperatures, the parameters of the magnetostructural transition gradually improved. When the powders were annealed at 773 K, the magnetostructural transition behaved the most similar to the bulk alloy. Consequently, the large magnetic entropy change of 27 J/(Kg K) and the effective cooling capacity of 171.3 J/Kg that were obtained under the magnetic field of 5 T were very close to the bulk alloy. Analysis of Magnetization Dynamics in NiFe Thin Films with Growth-Induced Magnetic Anisotropies

Abstract:We have used angled magnetron sputter deposition with and without sample rotation to control the magnetic anisotropy in 20 nm NiFe films. Ferromagnetic resonance spectroscopy, with data analysis using a Bayesian approach, is used to extract material parameters relating to the magnetic anisotropy. When the sample is rotated during growth, only shape anisotropy is present, but when the sample is held fixed, a strong uniaxial anisotropy emerges with in-plane easy axis along the azimuthal direction of the incident atom flux. When the film is deposited in two steps, with an in-plane rotation of 90 degrees between steps, the two orthogonal induced in-plane easy-axes effectively cancel. The analysis approach enables precise and accurate determination of material parameters from ferromagnetic resonance measurements; this demonstrates the ability to precisely control both the direction and strength of uniaxial magnetic anisotropy, which is important in magnetic thin-film device applications.

Abstract:Depth resolved study of structural and magnetic profiles of antiferromagnetic/ferromagnetic (AFM/FM) system upon annealing was performed in this work. We studied systems comprising of AFM IrMn and FM (Co, Fe, Co$_{70}$Fe$_{30}$) structures using polarized neutron and soft X-ray scattering, secondary neutral spectrometry, and magnetometry. Structural depth profiles obtained from neutron reflectometry indicate non-homogeneity of the AFM layer even before annealing, which is associated with the migration of manganese to the surface of the sample. Annealing of samples with CoFe and Co layers leads to a slight increase ($\sim$ 5 %) in the migration of manganese, which, however, does not lead to significant degradation of the exchange coupling at the AFM/FM interface. A significantly different picture was observed in the Fe/IrMn systems where a strong migration of iron into the AFM layer was observed upon annealing of the sample, leading to erosion of the magnetic profile, the formation of a non-magnetic alloy and degradation of the pinning strength. This study can be useful in the design of AF/FM systems in different spintronics devices, including HDD read heads, where thermal annealing is applied at different stages of the device manufacturing process.

Abstract:Anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) sensors are pivotal in various applications due to their low power consumption, scalability, and cost-effectiveness due to the simple sensor structure, comprising one NiFe film, usually encased in a buffer and cap layer. In this work, we explore the effects of inserting MgO and Pt dusting layers between the NiFe sensing layer and adjacent capping and buffer layers, on the electric, magnetic and structural properties of AMR sensors. We describe results on sensors based on Ta/NiFe/Ta, with an as-processed AMR value of 2.0 %. The insertion of Pt thin films had a positive impact, with AMR values increasing to 2.2 %, contrary to the observed with MgO dusting films. Magnetic annealing up to 370 °C caused an increase of the resistivity and reduction in AMR (with Pt dusting layers), on the contrary, MgO dusting layers improved the sensor performance upon annealing, with AMR increasing to 2.5 % (5 h at 370 °C). In light of the findings, the incorporation of Pt and MgO dusting layers enables tailoring the grain size and resistance of Ta/NiFe/Ta films, while combined with proper annealing, which is relevant for applications where Ta and NiFe are available for AMR sensor fabrication.

Studying the Effects of Annealing and Surface Roughness on Both the Magnetic Property and Surface Energy of Co60Fe20Sm20 Thin Films on Si(100) Substrate

Abstract:In this study, Co60Fe20Sm20 alloy was employed for sputter deposition onto Si(100) substrate within a high vacuum environment, and subsequent thermal treatment was conducted using a vacuum annealing furnace. Thorough measurements and analyses were carried out to evaluate how various film thicknesses and annealing temperatures affect the material. The investigations encompassed observations of structural and physical properties, magnetic traits, mechanical behavior, and material adhesion. The results from the four-point probe measurements clearly demonstrate a trend of decreasing resistivity and sheet resistance with increasing film thickness and higher annealing temperature. Analysis through atomic force microscopy (AFM) shows that heightened annealing temperature corresponds to decreased surface roughness. Furthermore, when analyzing low-frequency alternating current magnetic susceptibility (χac), it became evident that the maximum magnetic susceptibility value consistently rises with increased film thickness, regardless of the annealing temperature. Through magnetic force microscopy (MFM) observations of magnetic domain images in the films, it became apparent that there was a noticeable reduction in the brightness contrast of the magnetic domains. Furthermore, nanoindentation analysis reveals a clear trend. Elevating the film thickness leads to a reduction in both hardness and Young's modulus. Contact angles range between 67.7° and 83.3°, consistently under 90°, highlighting the hydrophilic aspect. Analysis of surface energy demonstrates an escalation with increasing film thickness, and notably, annealed films exhibit a substantial surge in surface energy. This signifies a connection between the reduction in contact angle and the observed elevation in surface energy. Raising the annealing temperature causes a decline in surface roughness. To summarize, the surface roughness of CoFeSm films at different annealing temperatures significantly impacts their magnetic, electrical, and adhesive properties. A smoother surface reduces the pinning effect on domain walls, thus enhancing the χac value. Furthermore, diminished surface roughness leads to a decline in the contact angle and a rise in surface energy. Conversely, rougher surfaces exhibit higher carrier conductivity, contributing to a reduction in electrical resistance.
