Abstract:Effective field theory is applied to finite-density systems with an unnaturally large scattering length, such as neutron matter. A new organizational scheme is identified and connected with an expansion in inverse powers of the number of space-time dimensions. This power counting allows for analytic calculations in many-body systems and reproduces the hole-line expansion of traditional nuclear physics.

Abstract:Deriving nuclear forces from quantum chromodynamics is amongst the most important challenges of nuclear physics.The aim of the effective field theory formulation of nuclear forces is to bridge this gap through chiral symmetry breaking, the main low energy manifestation of quantum chromodynamics.However, the realization of this goal is not automatic.The effective field theory we are using must be renormalizable.Only if this condition is met can we really link the low energy dynamics of pions and nucleons with that of the the quarks and gluons conforming them.But, apart from the theoretical motivation, there is a more practical downside of renormalizability.If we have this property, calculations of observables in nuclear physics become systematic and, in particular, we can know the error of theoretical predictions in advance.This property is known as power counting.The original formulation of nuclear effective field theory due to Weinberg -the Weinberg counting -, though inspired and ingenious, failed to implement renormalizability and hence power couting.In this contribution we will explain what is missing in the Weinberg counting and how to improve on it to guarantee a fully consistent effective field theory for two-nucleon processes.As a result we will arrive at a theory in which contact range interactions -that is, four nucleon vertices -play a more prominent role than expected in Weinberg's original proposal.
The Long and Short of Nuclear Effective Field Theory Expansions

Abstract:Nonperturbative effective field theory calculations for NN scattering seem to break down at rather low momenta. By examining several toy models, we clarify how effective field theory expansions can in general be used to properly separate long- and short-range effects. We find that one-pion exchange has a large effect on the scattering phase shift near poles in the amplitude, but otherwise can be treated perturbatively. Analysis of a toy model that reproduces 1S0 NN scattering data rather well suggests that failures of effective field theories for momenta above the pion mass can be due to short-range physics rather than the treatment of pion exchange. We discuss the implications this has for extending the applicability of effective field theories.

Abstract:The structure functions for inelastic electron-nucleon scattering are studied in the Bjorken limit in the framework of canonical field theory. The " parton " model of Feynman is derived and the structure functions' asymptotic behavior for large energy transfers is computed. Abstract:Effective field theories are the most general tool for the description of low energy phenomena. They are universal and systematic: they can be formulated for any low energy systems we can think of and offer a clear guide on how to calculate predictions with reliable error estimates, a feature that is called power counting. These properties can be easily understood in Wilsonian renormalization, in which effective field theories are the low energy renormalization group evolution of a more fundamental ---perhaps unknown or unsolvable--- high energy theory. In nuclear physics they provide the possibility of a theoretically sound derivation of nuclear forces without having to solve quantum chromodynamics explicitly. However there is the problem of how to organize calculations within nuclear effective field theory: the traditional knowledge about power counting is perturbative but nuclear physics is not. Yet power counting can be derived in Wilsonian renormalization and there is already a fairly good understanding of how to apply these ideas to non-perturbative phenomena and in particular to nuclear physics. Here we review a few of these ideas, explain power counting in two-nucleon scattering and reactions with external probes and hint at how to extend the present analysis beyond the two-body problem.

Abstract:The closed-form T matrices in the 3S1–3D1 channels of EFT(⁄π) for NN scattering with the potentials truncated at order O(Q4) are presented with the nonperturbative divergences parametrized in a general manner. The stringent constraints imposed by the closed form of the T matrices are exploited in the underlying theory perspective and turned into virtues in the implementation of subtractions and the manifestation of power counting rules in nonperturbative regimes, leading us to the concept of EFT scenario. A number of scenarios of the EFT description of NN scattering are compared with PSA data in terms of effective range expansion and 3S1 phase shifts, showing that it is favorable to proceed in a scenario with conventional EFT couplings and sophisticated renormalization in order to have large NN scattering lengths. The informative utilities of fine tuning are demonstrated in several examples and naturally interpreted in the underlying theory perspective. In addition, some of the approaches adopted in the recent literature are also addressed in the light of EFT scenario.

Abstract:We derive scalar effective field theories - Lagrangians, symmetries, and all - from on-shell scattering amplitudes constructed purely from Lorentz invariance, factorization, a fixed power counting order in derivatives, and a fixed order at which amplitudes vanish in the soft limit. These constraints leave free parameters in the amplitude which are the coupling constants of well-known theories: Nambu-Goldstone bosons, Dirac-Born-Infeld scalars, and Galileons. Moreover, soft limits imply conditions on the Noether current which can then be inverted to derive Lagrangians for each theory. We propose a natural classification of all scalar effective field theories according to two numbers which encode the derivative power counting and soft behavior of the corresponding amplitudes. In those cases where there is no consistent amplitude, the corresponding theory does not exist.

Abstract:In effective field theory physical quantities, in particular observables, are expressed as a power series in terms of a small expansion parameter. For non-perturbative systems, for instance nuclear physics, this requires the non-perturbative treatment of at least a part of the interaction (or the potential, if we are dealing with a non-relativistic system). This is not entirely trivial and as a consequence different interpretations on how to treat these systems have appeared. A practical approach is to expand the effective potential, where this potential is later fully iterated in the Schrödinger equation for obtaining amplitudes and observables. The expectation is that this will lead to observables that will have an implicit power counting expansion. Here we explicitly check whether the amplitudes are actually following the same power counting as the potential. It happens that reality does not necessarily conform to expectations and the amplitudes will often violate the power counting with which the potential has been expanded. A more formal approach is to formulate the expansion directly in terms of amplitudes and observables, which is the original aim of the effective field theory idea. Yet this second approach is technically complicated. We explore here the possibility of constructing potentials that when fully iterated will make sure that amplitudes indeed are expansible in terms of a small expansion parameter.
Scattering from an external field in quantum chromodynamics at high energies: from foundations to interdisciplinary connections

Abstract:We review the factorization of the $S$-matrix elements in the context of particle scattering off an external field, which can serve as a model for the field of a large nucleus. The factorization takes the form of a convolution of light cone wave functions describing the physical incoming and outgoing states in terms of bare partons, and products of Wilson lines. The latter represent the interaction between the bare partons and the external field. Specializing to elastic scattering amplitudes of onia at very high energies, we introduce the color dipole model, which formulates the calculation of the modulus-squared of the wave functions in quantum chromodynamics with the help of a branching random walk, and the scattering amplitudes as observables on this classical stochastic process. Methods developed for general branching processes produce analytical formulas for the asymptotics of such observables, and thus enable one to derive exact large-rapidity expressions for onium-nucleus cross sections, from which electron-nucleus cross sections may be inferred.

Low-Energy Theorems for Neutron–Proton Scattering in EFT Using a Perturbative Power Counting

Abstract:Low-energy theorems (LETs) for effective-range parameters in nucleon-nucleon scattering encode properties of the long-range part of the nuclear force. We compute LETs for S -wave neutron–proton scattering using chiral effective field theory with a modified version of Weinberg power counting. Corrections to the leading order amplitude are included in distorted-wave perturbation theory and we incorporate contributions up to the third order in the power counting. We find that LETs in the and partial waves agree well with empirical effective-range parameters. At the same time, phase shifts up to laboratory scattering energies of about 100 MeV can be reproduced. We show that it is important to consider the pion mass splitting in the one-pion exchange potential in the partial wave while the effect is negligible in the partial wave. We conclude that pion exchanges, as treated in this power counting, accurately describe the long-range part of the S -wave nuclear interaction.

Recent Progress Towards a Chiral Effective Field Theory for the NN System

Abstract:Since Weinberg's proposal two decades ago, chiral effective field theory in the NN sector has been developed and applied up to order $O((Q/M_{hi})^4)$. In principle it could provide a model-independent description of nuclear force from QCD. However, in spite of its huge success, some open issues such as the renormalization group invariance and power counting, still remain to be solved. In this talk we refine the chiral effective field theory approach to the NN system based on a renormalization group analysis. Our results show that a truly model-independent description of NN system can be obtained by a new power counting which treats the subleading order corrections perturbatively.

Abstract:The method of effective field theories (EFTs) is developed for the scattering of two particles at wavelengths which are large compared to the range of their interaction. It is shown that the renormalized EFT is equivalent to the effective range expansion, to a Schroedinger equation with a pseudo-potential, and to an energy expansion of a generic boundary condition at the origin. The roles of regulators and potentials are also discussed. These ideas are exemplified in a toy model.

Power Counting of Contact-Range Currents in Effective Field Theory

Abstract:We analyze the power counting of two-body currents in nuclear effective field theories (EFTs). We find that the existence of nonperturbative physics at low energies, which is manifest in the existence of the deuteron and the ^{1}S_{0} NN virtual bound state, combined with the appearance of singular potentials in versions of nuclear EFT that incorporate chiral symmetry, modifies the renormalization-group flow of the couplings associated with contact operators that involve nucleon-nucleon pairs and external fields. The order of these couplings is thereby enhanced with respect to the naive-dimensional-analysis estimate. Consequently, short-range currents enter at a lower order in the chiral EFT than has been appreciated up until now, and their impact on low-energy observables is concomitantly larger. We illustrate the changes in the power counting with a few low-energy processes involving external probes and few-nucleon systems, including electron-deuteron elastic scattering and radiative neutron capture by protons.

Abstract:This is a brief history of what I consider as very important, some of which truly seminal, contributions made by young Korean nuclear theorists, mostly graduate students working on PhD thesis in 1990's and early 2000's, to nuclear effective field theory, nowadays heralded as the first-principle approach to nuclear physics. The theoretical framework employed is an effective field theory anchored on a scale-invariant hidden local symmetric Lagrangian constructed along the line of Weinberg's "Folk Theorem" on effective field theory. The problems addressed are the high-precision calculations on the thermal $np$ capture, the solar $pp$ fusion process, the solar $hep$ process -- John Bahcall's challenge to nuclear theorists -- and the quenching of $g_A$ in giant Gamow-Teller resonances and the whopping enhancement of first-forbidden beta transitions in astrophysical processes. Extending adventurously the strategy to a wild uncharted domain in which a systematic implementation of the "theorem" is far from obvious, the same effective Lagrangian is applied to the structure of compact stars. A surprising result on the properties of massive stars, totally different from what has been obtained up to day in the literature, is predicted, such as the precocious onset of conformal sound velocity together with the possible emergence of hidden symmetries such as scale symmetry and hidden local symmetry.

Abstract:Attempts to apply effective field theory (EFT) methods to nonrelativistic nucleon-nucleon (NN) scattering have raised questions about the nature and limitations of an EFT expansion when used nonperturbatively. We discuss the characteristics of a meaningful EFT analysis and compare them with traditional approaches to NN scattering. A key feature of an EFT treatment is a systematic expansion in powers of momentum, which we demonstrate using an error analysis introduced by Lepage. A clear graphical determination of the radius of convergence for the momentum expansion is also obtained. We use these techniques to compare cutoff regularization, two forms of dimensional regularization, and the dibaryon approach, using a simple model for illustration. The naturalness of the parameters and predictions for bound-state energies are also shown.

Abstract:I describe recent progress towards a theory of the NN force which captures the consequences of QCD's chiral symmetry and the pattern of its breaking, and is formulated as an expansion in a ratio of low and high mass scales, M_{lo}/M_{hi}. This "chiral effective field theory" of the NN system is a firm foundation for explorations of nuclear structure and reactions that are grounded in QCD's low-energy symmetries. While calculations that use a ChiPT expansion for the NN potential have proven very successful, they can only be used with a narrow range of momentum-space cutoffs, which leaves the expansion parameter for observable quantities somewhat murky. Here we seek a truly systematic effective field theory for the NN amplitude, that is manifestly renormalization-group invariant at each order in a demonstrably perturbative expansion.

Nucleon-Nucleon elastic and inelastic scattering using quantum field theory: a comparative study

Abstract:In this paper, we use Yukawa theory to calculate differential and total cross-sections for elastic and inelastic scattering in nucleon-nucleon interactions. We start from the fundamental Lagrangian and derive the $T$-matrix and hence the invariant scattering matrix leading towards the differential and total cross section. We perform calculations utilizing two types of Yukawa interaction terms: 1) scalar current, and 2) pseudoscalar current. We also carry out calculations in a laboratory frame. Calculated results using scalar current exhibits the exact features of elastic and inelastic scattering. The results agree very well with the differential cross-sections for experimental data. The pseudoscalar current calculations do not offer reasonable results and features of the NN interactions. The simplicity of the theory makes it all the more impressive, thus it can be used in place of more complicated field theories to describe NN interactions.

Abstract:We explore a recently proposed effective field theory describing electromagnetically or gravitationally interacting massive particles in an expansion about their mass ratio, also known as the self-force (SF) expansion. By integrating out the deviation of the heavy particle about its inertial trajectory, we obtain an effective action whose only degrees of freedom are the lighter particle together with the photon or graviton, all propagating in a Coulomb or Schwarzschild background. The 0SF dynamics are described by the usual background field method, which at 1SF is supplemented by a "recoil operator" that encodes the wobble of the heavy particle, and similarly computable corrections appearing at 2SF and higher. Our formalism exploits the fact that the analytic expressions for classical backgrounds and particle trajectories encode dynamical information to all orders in the couplings, and from them we extract multiloop integrands for perturbative scattering. As a check, we study the two-loop classical scattering of scalar particles in electromagnetism and gravity, verifying known results. We then present new calculations for the two-loop classical scattering of dyons, and of particles interacting with an additional scalar or vector field coupling directly to the lighter particle but only gravitationally to the heavier particle.
